"No!" Fandil stopped suddenly in the middle of the street, rapping the butt of
his staff on the paving stones. "We're going about this all wrong, Lenpro!"
Lenpro pulled his brother toward the edge of the street. "You're blocking
traffic," he said. "Move out of the way and then tell me what's wrong. Are you
saying that we shouldn't have come to enlist Emperor Alonj, or what?"
"Alonj? No, of course we have to use him, poor fellow. Legitmacy is critical.
No, we're rushing about, acting in haste, without plan or even much thought. If we
want to succeed and hold the Andorian League together, planning is critical."
"Is your memory going? I distinctly recall that we argued, discussed, and
planned all the way from Tarrgir to Fratsfa. Both of us. I was there, Fandil, and
*I* remember it."
"Very amusing, ha ha. I was there, too, and my memory is fine. But it doesn't
include any memory of true planning beyond 'our opponents appear to have done this,
we must do that to counter it'. Not real plans reaching into the future. Not much
in the way of real information, either: WHO is our opponent, WHY is he or are they
doing this, WHAT are they trying to achieve, and HOW can we best foil them?"
"You left out when and where," Lenpro said.
"WHAT are their resources, and our best resources against them? WHERE is their
headquarters?" Fandil finished. He made a gesture of impatience. "You see the
problem, and you know it isn't a joke, brother. All we're doing is reacting; our
opponent is calling the steps of the dance."
"Yes, and probably he--or they--know as well as we do that we'll have to work
with Alonj. That's one of the reasons the Empress was upset. We might get a guard
of gladiators for the Emperor and his wife and children; that would be a start there.
But what are you proposing to do about the information shortage?"
"I shall think," Fandil said. "No distractions of travel. And scry where I
can; magical information gathering isn't totally reliable, but it's better than no
information gathering."
"I've no doubt Fern can fix you up with a private room to think in. And I will
gather information on the streets," Lenpro said. He turned toward the Flower Shoppe
and resumed walking.
Lady Fern could. "I've just the place for you, brother," she said. "At the top
of the house in the back, no one traipsing up and down a hall outside your door, you
won't even hear activity from the shop down below." She called one of the girls, too
many girls, Fandil thought, to show him the way.
This one, a saucy piece called Charming Chenopodium or some such, okay, not
Chenopodium, it had no flowers to speak of and was eaten like spinach, maybe she was
an Alluring Alysum-- He jerked his thoughts back to the matter at hand. But the
wretched girl was barely dressed; he supposed that garment she was almost wearing was
a... shift or something; it certainly kept shifting! She opened a door at the end of
a long hall and stood back. "Here you are, sir, and you'll have all the quiet you
need. And then when you're ready for company, just give us a call, you know?" She
pointed to a silver bell sitting on a table by the window. "Just ring the bell, and
I'll hear you." With a last smile that seemed to promise many things, and she
couldn't be as old as twenty!, she... shifted down the hall.
Fandil shook his head and closed the door carefully behind him. Did it have a
lock? Yes. He turned the lock. There were days when he simply didn't know what to
make of his sister. Many days.

Lenpro was glad enough to separate from Fandil for a while. He got along just
fine with his brother, but there was no denying that they had different strengths.
Fandil's strength was magic and careful thought. His own was decisive action, and he
wanted to take some. Okay, sure, first he would gather a little information in his
own way--walk the streets, linger in the bars, strike up conversations where he found
them--
"You'll be going out, won't you, Lenpro?" Lady Fern said. "A good thing, I'm
sure, but you aren't familiar with Fratsfa. I'll provide you with a guide, I think."
She pointed to one of the girls lingering in doorways and leaning on counters around
the shop. This one was a round-faced, cheerful blonde. "That one."
The blonde bounced over. "Hi! I'm a Decadent Dandelion, but you can call me
Dandy." She smiled up at him. "I know lots of good places to go in Fratsfa!"

Fandil sat at the window and looked out over the city, sipping tea from a
service he'd found ready for him. It was a dramatic view of the old place, pleasing,
too, if one cared for charming melancholy. Fratsfa boasted of its ancient glories,
and they had been glorious, there was no doubt of that. But they were in the past,
slipping farther and farther into the past. There was still good in this old land,
but he had a feeling, almost a vision, of the present strength burning away to make a
carnival for the heedless. There was a feverish rush after pleasures--not even Fern
was immune, and other parts of Andoria pursued it as blindly as Fratsfa did. But
that hid the deeper issues.
He was supposed to be considering the problems the disappearance of the king
presented, but he now saw that as merely one more symptom of the deeper issue: The
Andorian League was a hollow shell, a shallow mask over the deep divisions between
the five realms that composed it. No one, not any of the old kings-- Ha, OLD kings?
The League wasn't that old, there were humans alive who had been born before it
formed. Still, not even the earlier kings of the League had addressed the problems
that divided the realms. Race, of course, or more properly species: human, elf,
werecat. But there were cultural gulfs, as well. The Andorian League was just that,
an alliance rather than a true nation. If Aradi had been part of a true nation,
would it have seceded? Would it have been ALLOWED to secede?
He shoved these thoughts aside. They represented a problem that needed to be
addressed, but not now. Right now... he barked a laugh. Right now, he had to figure
out how to patch together the League that still was, in the hopes that there would BE
a future when they could try to solve the deeper issues.
Should that patching job even be attemtped? He hesitated, then nodded. Yes.
Even if the League didn't become a nation, its original purpose remained: to unite
the people of this corner of Alastari against their enemies. And the League, all
Alastari, had enemies. Had one Enemy, at least, in common. Because there was
something in the north, something within the Karnhorn lands, that was building
strength and would destroy all the good and simple things that made life worth
living, if it wasn't stopped.

"First," Lenpro said, "I just want to get a feel for the town. The moods, the
factions, the general attitudes--"
"Great! There are attitudes everywhere," Dandy assured him. She grabbed his
hand and set off. "I'll show you!"

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

So here we are. You may have noticed? A fine sunny day with the frost
crunching underfoot, all that kind of stuff. And a good day for Andorak, as these
things go, a FINE day. Eighteen fights with only one standby (seven challenges), and
personals from Kellumbo's Kids, for which we thank them. Good work.
Superior Forces was or were avoided by Kellumbo's Kids.
     Warduke got the most challenges.
Eighteen fights with one standby, I said that already, didn't I? Well, it's
still true.

BABY (43-2863) (26-44-2,42) of DARK SIDE fought LORIS KEY (26-4706) (22-34-1,66)
of GOLDEN CANYON. BABY was beaten by LORIS KEY in an exciting 1 minute match. Loris
tells me that she will NOT make a "Baby Pie," but she might experiment with baby-blue
berries.
     SOLARIS (46-3759) (35-95-0,46) of RUBY DRAGONS fought GO-FER (26-4444) (24-41-
2,75) of GOLDEN CANYON. SOLARIS was devastated by GO-FER in a 1 minute one-sided
brawl. Go-Fer has refused to cook, even with a win, but promises to gloat. His
teammates tell me he's good at that.
CLEMMIE (26-4630) (28-44-1,127) of GOLDEN CANYON fought FRY GUY (40-3655) (27-
14-0,93) of TACO GODS. CLEMMIE was handily defeated by FRY GUY in a 1 minute
mismatched bout. Some people just can't say "No" to fried foods. Gotta love 'em.
TORNADO CXCVI (60-5111) (19-33-0,138) of DEATH STUDS VII fought AYLIA (105-4)
(0-0-0,130) of Drafted Fans. TORNADO CXCVI vanquished AYLIA in an action packed 1
minute mismatched bout. Our only standby on the sands today, and this rude Tornado
just blew her off. That kind of thing makes it hard to recruit a standby.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (52-63-1,168) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought SARINA (26-
4220) (29-37-1,105) of GOLDEN CANYON. VAN HELSING was handily defeated by SARINA in
a 1 minute one-sided conflict. What can you cook that would be inspired by a Van
Helsing? Sounds like a beer to me.

     HUMMEL (14-1404) (95-153-7,187) of MIKES fought SANDS (11-4123) (70-142-3,180)
of SCARLET KNIGHTS. HUMMEL savagely defeated SANDS in a crowd pleasing 3 minute gory
match. Sands, pounded into the sands. It was hard to tell when the fight was over,
but seeing Hummel wandering around pounding on the ground in lieu of a clear opponent
was a clue.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (51-31-3,185) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought CONNOR MACLEOD
(11-5532) (69-83-0,164) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. GRANDPA RAT bested CONNOR MACLEOD in
a crowd pleasing 1 minute conflict. The arena steward actually supplied an arras for
Grandpa to jump out of, not that it was necessary, but he said that it added "a nice
touch." I think he's been reading too many decorating magazines.
     WOLVERINE (66-3871) (72-122-6,241) of X-FORCE fought MAXIMUS (22-5966) (66-43-
3,205) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. WOLVERINE was defeated by MAXIMUS in an exciting 1 minute
match. Perhaps less embarrassing than losing to a Minimus. Probably a dwarf.
Minimus, a dwarf. For all I know, Maximus might be a giant. It would make sense.
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (83-117-0,217) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought SMITH
(14-1282) (99-151-4,196) of MIKES. TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD beat SMITH in a popular 1
minute melee. If Smith presents himself in the guise of an anvil, this is what he
can expect.
HERO, HERO (68-446) (25-38-0,211) of DIAMONDS & RUST fought LUKARIAN LAMORAK
(11-4841) (70-97-1,206) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. HERO, HERO vanquished LUKARIAN LAMORAK
in a 1 minute one-sided fight. Thus making the "scarlet" part of Lukarian's team
name totally appropriate.

Ah, the challenges!
     SALEM (82-42046) (15-8-0,76) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-23 challenged GOLDERIE (26-
4657) (30-31-1,93) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up17. SALEM narrowly defeated GOLDERIE in an
action packed 1 minute gruesome Challenge melee. How narrow is narrow? Are we
talking "narrow" as an alley is narrow, or wafer-thin?
JACKSON (22-6649) (31-4-0,157) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged WHERE'S MY TOURNEY?
(82-2893) (35-6-0,196) of THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! Up39. JACKSON was beaten by WHERE'S
MY TOURNEY? in a 1 minute Challenge brawl. A bold attempt, Jackson, and I hope you
learned from it. Ah, did you hear someone in the stands cheering you on? I thought
he was going to throw bricks at the arenamaster when Where's was pronounced the
winner.
     DARNESHA (82-42015) (20-4-1,168) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 challenged WARDUKE (11-
5930) (59-75-3,161) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. Down 7. DARNESHA devastated WARDUKE in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. This is Warduke The Most
Challenged. What's the attraction? This guy has no conversation unless you want to
talk about his scars.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (58-25-0,196) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged BLACKRAZOR (11-
4091) (68-146-2,211) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 15. BLIND GIRL luckily beat BLACKRAZOR
in an exciting 4 minute bloody Challenge fight. Somehow I don't think luck had that
much to do with it. We've seen this Blind Girl fight before, and she's a tiger. Er,
a tigress.

NAFISAH (22-6612) (37-18-1,191) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN
(46-3809) (59-66-1,185) of RUBY DRAGONS. Down 6. NAFISAH vanquished KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Looks to me like Korney is
headed for a record as depressing as Blackrazor's.
TEEVELLA (82-24954) (25-5-1,202) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged NIXIE SEASPRITE
(11-4992) (69-83-1,192) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 10. TEEVELLA demolished NIXIE
SEASPRITE in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Way to go, Teevella,
catch these water creatures when there's ice on their pools, and they're as easy as
fish in a barrel. And if they complain, well, nobody said they had to get out on the
sands, right? Hmm, I must be having an attack of bloodthirstyness. Must be lack of
sleep. Or else the weather.
     VISION (26-1573) (129-53-4,382) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged GOKU (46-3655)
(96-78-2,204) of DRAGONBALL Z. Down lots, hmm, 178? Something like that. VISION
outwaited GOKU in a crowd pleasing 8 minute gruesome Challenge fight. You think the
mess on the sands was gory, you should take a look at what the fans did to Goku
afterward! Guess they didn't like sitting still that long in below-freezing weather.

For the title:
SNAKE CHARMER (22-6169) (54-23-0,250) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (73-89-0,231) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. SNAKE CHARMER unbelievably bested VAJRA
VALMEJAR in a popular 6 minute Title duel. For some reason, Vajra seems to have
fallen asleep out there. Odd. But that's the way it goes, you snooze, you lose.

Varja -- It's been a while since that's happened. I never saw it coming. -- Blind
Girl

Lukarion -- You are getting very sleepy...yes...sleepy... -- Snake Charmer

Is that how you do snakes? I never tried that.

Nixie -- Hmm, the dice can be fickle, I see. Time for a teammate to deal with you.
I've got bigger fish to fry this turn. -- Jackson

Where's My Tourney -- Let's see if you happen to be avoiding. -- Jackson

Sarina -- Close. Let's try that again with a tweaked strat. -- Salem

An, that's like changing the seasonings just a little, yes?

Salem -- Wow, was that the price you paid for exceeding standard dwarven heights? I
can't believe you thought it worth the inch or two. Regardless, I have no intention
of serving witches's parts prepared in any way at all. Smoked oysters, though, I
could do smoked oysters... if I don't have to eat them. I know it's reactionary of
me, but I prefer my animal foods to come from vertebrates. -- Sarina
P.S. And NO, I will not smoke even oysters with tobacco! Talk about a yucky taste!

Connor Macleod -- Oatmeal? I don't think so! Although your face does have that
look. -- Clemmie

Solaris -- Huh, sunflower seeds. Blah. Not as bad as garbanzo beans, I suppose, but
then, few things are that can be called "edible and grain-oid." Did you know that
some IDIOT named Bob thinks that bread can be made out of garbanzo beans? Not
simply, there's a lot of "melt this and separate that and whisk the other" that I
won't go into, but the basic concept is not appealing. -- Golderie

Fry Guy -- Ah, empanadas. I had forgotten about empanadas, thanks for reminding me.
Peach and plum fried pies, with ice cream on the side. Yes. -- Loris Key

Baby -- I bet you'd make a nice little roast, kid! Well, if you weren't a golem.
Roasted golem, no. Forget that. -- Go-Fer

Ardane -- No, of course we aren't listening. Why should we? -- the Golden Canyon
Chefs

You mean... it's pointless for me to insult you?
