Fratsfa:
Fandil started by simply opening his magical awareness, a sort of sixth sense,
to the city. This was not the most pleasant experience, because Fratsfa was a very
old city that had been steeping in magic of many kinds for centuries. The background
was a muck of bits and pieces of spells accumulated, pressed together by the addition
of more magic on top of it, deformed by that pressure and by age, uniting into
compound magical structures that no magician had ever visualized, almost breeding
with each other. Fratsfa had the highest incidence of spontaneous magical activity
of anyplace other than Chaos-contaminated ground such as the marshy plain near Delarq
Tor. And when it was happening without the guidance of even a deranged mind, you
didn't need the residual effect of Chaos Magic to twist the results into strange
forms. Some parts of the background magic here were alive.
Against this background, real, living, practicing magicians moved like thieves
in a crowd: sometimes you saw them, sometimes you didn't. Picking out possible
allies and enemies wasn't easy. Fandil snorted. If it was easy, they wouldn't need
him.
He began to sort and filter his impressions, and the first thing he discovered
was another magician, also scanning. Younger, though no child. Not a clear
signature, male, human, mixed motives. But strong, and even with mixed motives, he
might be willing to make himself useful--
A blast of energy like a portculis falling, like a guilotine. Like being hit in
the head with an axe, but not, Fandil decided as he picked himself up off the floor,
quite as bloody and final. What had happened was clear enough: some magician of
considerable power had broken the beginning of contact between Fandil and the young
mage before it had a chance to develop. Possibly had killed the young man, which
would be unfortunate.
The old mage extended his magical sense again, not as easily--even thinking hurt
at the moment. The magical background was seething, the Fratsfan magicians had
either gone into hiding or were doing the equivalent of standing on their doorsteps
shouting at each other. Not helpful. Well, looking back at the brief contact, it
was not Fandil's impression that the young man was HERE. Within fifty miles,
probably closer, but not right here in the city. North and west. Maybe in... Andor?
A hopeful thought, they could use a contact in the capital. He reached out--and came
up against a wall of magic. No contact with Andor was possible from here. He would
have to go closer physically if he wanted to pursue that connection. Or wait until
the arcanum cleared, this kind of barrier took amazing amounts of energy to sustain.
But he had a feeling, growing stronger by the moment, that they didn't have the
time to wait.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Yes, well, nineteen fights isn't bad when there's this much snow on the ground
and more falling. Only four standbys, we've done worse. Home Guard is still doing
worse, ha! Nineteen fights, four standbys, and six challenges, the challenges all
issued by Kellumbo's Kids, of course. They work hard for their position, those Kids.
That Totally Sucks! was most avoided by Kellumbo's Kids. Probably the only
avoiding going on, though one or two other teams may have drawn the attention of the
Kids. They use every tool, and they have earned everything they get.
Lukarian Lamorak got the most challenges, at a guess, a double-challenge from
the Kid he fought. But I suppose there could have been more than one Kid out to get
him. This kind of stuff happens.
And since there has been stuff happening, even in the snow, let's look at the fights:
GOLDERIE (26-4657) (30-33-1,64) of GOLDEN CANYON fought OHRLAM (105-2) (0-0-
0,60) of the Same Old Dudes. GOLDERIE overpowered OHRLAM in a 2 minute bloody
mismatched fight. I'm sure this pleased her, but I can't guess what Ohrlam will
inspire her to cook. Be here next time to find out, and bring your appetite.
LORIS KEY (26-4706) (24-34-2,90) of GOLDEN CANYON fought YOGONITH (105-5) (0-0-
0,90) of the Same Old Dudes. LORIS KEY was murdered by YOGONITH in a 1 minute one-
sided bout. Aaaah! Terrible, to be killed by a standby with tentacles! This sort
of thing sends a terrible message to authors, and it could mean a sudden disastrous
adventure for Loris.
BABY (43-2863) (26-46-2,42) of DARK SIDE fought GO-FER (26-4444) (26-41-2,80) of
GOLDEN CANYON. BABY was devastated by GO-FER in an exciting 1 minute one-sided
brawl. Oh, gods, is he going to say it again, about roasting Baby with an apple? A
dire image. Hmm, it might make more sense to roast THIS baby with an alligator pear.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (53-64-1,148) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought TAEL KAL (105-
7) (0-0-0,110) of the Same Old Dudes. VAN HELSING handily defeated TAEL KAL in a 1
minute mismatched bout. Ah, haven't seen Tael Kal out in a while. It's no wonder he
lost, he's out of practice. Too much time sitting in taverns drinking beer, and not
enough spent in the practice rooms. You always end up paying for this kind of
neglect.
SARINA (26-4220) (30-38-1,126) of GOLDEN CANYON fought FRY GUY (40-3655) (28-15-
0,114) of TACO GODS. SARINA overpowered FRY GUY in a 1 minute uneven struggle.
Sarina has hinted at an inspiration to make fried apricot dumplings based on this
success. Just the thing for a cold afternoon.
WARDUKE (11-5930) (59-77-3,157) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought TORNADO CXCVI (60-
5111) (20-34-0,145) of DEATH STUDS VII. WARDUKE handily defeated TORNADO CXCVI in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided conflict. Interesting. I wouldn't have thought
Warduke went in for that kind of, ah, novel trans-gender interaction. Many find it
too strenuous.
CONNOR MACLEOD (11-5532) (69-85-0,165) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought CLEMMIE (26-
4630) (29-45-1,114) of GOLDEN CANYON. CONNOR MACLEOD devastated CLEMMIE in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute gory one-sided battle. Ah, no, Clemmie, tell me we aren't going to
have to listen to another anti-haggis tirade! There must be something else Connor
likes to eat.
DARNESHA (82-42015) (22-4-1,183) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 fought JIMI (105-27)
(0-0-0,240) of the Same Old Dudes. DARNESHA was demolished by JIMI in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched match. What confuses me is that the Commission, having
standbys of all ranks, can't seem to call out an appropriate one when a match like
this is planned. Sounds like bribery and covert fight-fixing to me.
WOLVERINE (66-3871) (72-124-6,196) of X-FORCE fought HERO, HERO (68-446) (26-39-
0,190) of DIAMONDS & RUST. WOLVERINE handily defeated HERO, HERO in a 1 minute one-
sided bout. Well, they do say that a wolverine will eat just about anything, even if
it isn't food. And some sandwiches, well, you have to wonder about them.
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (84-118-0,206) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought HUMMEL
(14-1404) (96-154-7,190) of MIKES. TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD was vanquished by HUMMEL in
a popular 1 minute one-sided duel. A battle of the fossils. Might as well let them
beat on each other, it's routine for them after so many years.
NAFISAH (22-6612) (38-19-1,184) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN
(46-3809) (59-68-1,179) of RUBY DRAGONS. NAFISAH was vanquished by KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN in a 1 minute one-sided duel. Hard luck, Naffy, but at this time of
year, the shadows are strongest. Which is strange in a way, because you'd think
they'd be stronger in the summer when there's more and stronger sunlight to cast the
aforesaid shadows. But apparently that isn't the way Dark Creatures calculate these
things.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (53-31-3,197) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought SANDS (11-4123)
(71-143-3,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. GRANDPA RAT won victory over SANDS in a 3 minute
duel. Well, I'm not a fan of rats as a general rule, but this Rat brought a sweet
victory to our day. I get TIRED of the same old fossils, year in and year out.
Indulge me a little, and next year I'll try to start with a fresh eye.
GOKU (46-3655) (97-79-2,221) of DRAGONBALL Z fought SMITH (14-1282) (100-152-
4,198) of MIKES. GOKU overpowered SMITH in a popular 1 minute gruesome mismatched
brawl. Note that I just said I'd TRY to start with a fresh eye. If we don't get
some of these old so-and-so fossils out of here, it will be hard to manage.
The challenge matches:
SALEM (82-42046) (17-8-0,93) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-23 challenged SOLARIS (46-
3759) (35-97-0,47) of RUBY DRAGONS. Down, what, 46? Something like that. But you
have only to look at Solaris's record to wonder about the classification of this
match. Seriously, this Solaris dude is goofing off! SALEM vanquished SOLARIS in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge fight. And goofing off at the wrong time.
JACKSON (22-6649) (32-5-0,210) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged WHERE'S MY TOURNEY?
(82-2893) (36-7-0,182) of THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! Down 28. JACKSON was luckily beaten
by WHERE'S MY TOURNEY? in a 2 minute Challenge competition. If this was just luck,
then Where's has a lot of practicing to catch up with. They were a well-matched
pair.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (60-25-0,210) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged BLACKRAZOR (11-
4091) (68-148-2,207) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 3. BLIND GIRL bested BLACKRAZOR in a
popular 4 minute Challenge fight. Despite the recognition points, I count this as a
bold move on Blind's part. You want to be really careful playing around with razors
when you can't see.
TEEVELLA (82-24954) (27-5-1,221) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged NIXIE SEASPRITE
(11-4992) (69-85-1,189) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 32. TEEVELLA was demolished by
NIXIE SEASPRITE in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Question for pondering: Can a
fossil float, if it happens to be a sea sprite? I grant you that at a mere 155
fights is barely fossil material, but it's an indication of intent.
MAXIMUS (22-5966) (68-43-3,222) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (74-90-0,231) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 9. MAXIMUS dispatched VAJRA VALMEJAR
in an action packed 1 minute Challenge battle. Well done, if just a little extreme.
And for the title:
SNAKE CHARMER (22-6169) (56-23-0,262) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS, not one to sit on his
laurels (very prickly, laurels) and wait for what will come, challenged LUKARIAN
LAMORAK (11-4841) (71-98-1,216) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 46. SNAKE CHARMER bested
LUKARIAN LAMORAK in a 3 minute Challenge Title fight. Better work on the swaying or
whatever it is, Charmer, because that was too close for the comfort of your fans.

Okay, Jorja says that "because we've had the Split and there might be new people
here" we have to do some serrious cooking. We'll give it our best shot. -- Clemmie,
for Golden Canyon
P.S. And in this weather, hanging over a hot stove is no hardship!
Van Helsing -- Fish? You want me to cook HERRINGS? Forget that, I don't do fish.
Not even a catfish, if I can help it. How about borscht? -- Sarina
Tarin Sharpeyes -- How uninspiring. But I did say I'd cook, well, I said we all
would, but that includes me. Drat. I don't care what Ardane has said, I will not do
sheep's eyes in aspic. Hmm. It sounds to me like some kind of steak with sauce is
called for here. Beef stock and garlic and... maybe a little parmesan. Let me think
about this a little more. -- Clemmie
P.S. Baked potato with sour cream and chives on the side? A simple lettuce and
tomato salad, if decent tomatoes can be got at this season.
Baby -- Yeah, roasted with an apple in your mouth. That'd shut you up. -- Go-Fer
Yogonith -- I am not going to do squid, nor yet eel. Definitely not. Setting aside
the fact that tentacles don't inspire me, I'm a pie cook. Yeah, I know, but I don't
even like to do mince pie, really. Well, maybe a meat tart sort of thing, with real
meat in it, beef or pork or chicken, maybe... yeah! Venison. Onions, potatoes,
peas, a rich broth--maybe some red wine in it. Pepper. Garlic. The usual suspects.
I could maybe do this, and follow it with a light desert pie, I'm thinking lemon. --
Loris Key
Mgrwonthe1sttogs! -- For you, a "clean the icebox" stew. Nothing else could grapple
with a name like that. -- Golderie
P.S. And I hope what's in the icebox is RUTABAGGAS or something like that!
At least we don't have to waste time answering somebody ELSE's personals. -- Clemmie
