Fratsfa:

The slum they were in decayed into a worse slum, and that faded into an area
that was half ruins and half buildings that just managed to stay upright. There were
people in the ramshackle structures even so. Sizzling Sunflower saw one woman
dressed in rags--literally in rags, and it was impossible to guess her age--staring
at them as though they were the most alien and fantastic beings imaginable. Perhaps
they were, here.
Lenpro touched her arm. "Don't stare at them," he said quietly.
"How can they live like this?" Sunflower demanded.
"A wise man once said to me that if you don't know where people are coming from
and where they're going, you can't judge the route they've chosen."
"That sounds, I don't know, profound or something, but what does it mean?"
"It means you should let be, until someone actually asks for help, or at least
until you know more." They turned a corner--there were no long straight avenues
here--and approached the crumbling wall that enclosed the Old Ruins.
Lenpro frowned. The wall was shimmering, faintly but unmistakably. Or maybe it
weren't, maybe it was just heat waves or sun reflecting off snow. Both at once? It
was an odd thing, anyway, and probably magical, and as such it should be approached
with caution. And preferably with a mage in hand, but Fandil wasn't here. Lenpro
didn't think they had time to waste going back to get him. He glanced at Sizzling
Sunflower.
She was staring at the wall, wide-eyed. "Weird!" she said, and smiled. "This
should be something new, let's try it!"
Lenpro shook his head. It was a long time since he'd been that young. But
maybe hers was the right attitude anyway. "Yes, let's." He stepped up to the
gateway.
The sensation was a familiar one: they had stepped through some kind of
dimensional gateway. And if he'd had any question about that, what he saw beyond it
would have made all certain. They were not on Ghea any more.
The buildings were as ruined as he had expected in this oldest part of Fratsfa,
if it still was based on that city. But heaps of rubble reared into narrow mounds of
unnatural height, and broken walls loomed and tottered, seeming to hang in mid-air
when they should be collapsing. The flagstoned streets lay at unexpected angles, and
sometimes there was nothing at all between the stones. They say people, more than
Lenpro had expected, but not one who appeared normal. He began to wonder how he
appeared to them and glanced over at Sizzling Sunflower.
She looked half plant, or maybe like a sunflower that was half human. She
touched his arm with one leafy green hand. "This is so neat! It's a whole other
world here!" When she smiled, her teeth were striped like sunflower seeds.
"It is that," Lenpro agreed. He glanced back to check on their line of retreat.
They didn't have a line of retreat, there was no sign of the gateway through which
they'd come.

                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
                          Reflections by the King's Sentinel

We at Kellumbo's Kids think that an arena merger would be a great idea. We were
going to look for a more active arena next split anyways, so if we could either move
people from here to a different arena via merge, or move people here, either is fine
with us.

The fight results last turn were interesting. As stated, we tried to mix things up a
bit. A few surprising results, and a few expected ones. We'll try to mix things up
a bit again this turn.

-- Maximus

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

You will see that the question of whether or not to close the regional Advanced
arenas has supporters for both sides, and I thank the normally silent managers who
have taken the time to speak up on this. Various suggestions have been presented
here and in other newsletters on the Isle that might be implemented to make a merger
less attractive: for example, changing the default arena of new graduates to the
appropriate regional instead of Talahya. This is not a matter in which I have any
say, and I will therefore not say anything. Ah, this time, anyway, because I do have
opinions, and may be tempted to air them eventually. I recommend that you managers
discuss this in whatever forum is convenient for you and then communicate your
preferences to the Commission--which, I remind you, did not originate the idea of
merging the regionals with Talahya and has not expressed an official opinion or
intention on it yet.
The question which does concern me is: If Andorak maintains a separate
existence, going on as it is now or in some other form, do you want it to continue
with a hand-written spy report or to just go with the Commission's golem reports?
And pendant to that, if you do want hand-written spy reports, what do you want in
them? The current random ramblings? The return of Biff Bunkum with the stylemaster
news and the like? Gossip and innuendo as to the secret stories behind the various
matches, even if I have to make up that gossip and those secret stories? Something
entirely different (and if so, what?)? Some or all of the above? If you don't tell
us what you want, how are we going to know?
Ah, and while we're on the subject of what goes into the newsletters, here's the
official position on personals. Or as official as I can be, which varies in sync
with the tides on Titan: We like to see personals in the newsletters. It seems to
show interest and even enthusiasm on the part of the players submitting them. Not
all players have access to other forums of communication, and THEY like to see
personals in the newsletters and talk to other players in that manner. We will
encourage the writing of personals, we may even urge and wheedle players to write
personals. But in the final crunch, personals from the players are not essential; we
can get golems to do it. We won't throw you out for not writing personals, we won't
close an arena because nobody writes personals. But we still would like to see 'em.

In the meantime, today's fights:
THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! was Most Avoided by KELLUMBO'S KIDS.
     Sarina was Most Challenged.
We had twenty fights involving five standbys. Ten challenges were issued (all
by Kellumbo's Kids), one of them being a TV challenge.

MERRIWEATHER (68-8693) (11-3-0,66) of SUPERIOR FORCES 2G fought YOGONITH (105-5)
(0-0-0,90) of Various Odds and Bods. MERRIWEATHER beat YOGONITH in a 2 minute fray.
Yogonith seems to have been off his feed lately; reports suggest that the influx of
silt due to the beginning of the spring runoff has clouded his vitality along with
the waters of the lake.
     GO-FER (26-4444) (30-43-2,74) of GOLDEN CANYON fought DESIREE (81-577) (22-13-
0,79) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. GO-FER overpowered DESIREE in a 1 minute one-sided duel.
And he'll crow about it, sure as sunrise. Betcha Desiree comes back and wallops him.
GOLDERIE (26-4657) (36-33-1,90) of GOLDEN CANYON fought SOLARIS (46-3759) (35-
103-0,53) of RUBY DRAGONS. GOLDERIE handily defeated SOLARIS in a popular 1 minute
mismatched competition. Peaches Melba! (I like that better than Cheese Louise,
okay?) How many years has it been since Solaris had any managerial attention? A
record of 35-104 speaks volumes, and I don't need Olaf Modeen to translate it for me.
KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (60-73-1,147) of RUBY DRAGONS fought AYLIA (105-4)
(0-0-0,130) of Various Odds and Bods. KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN overpowered AYLIA in a 1
minute one-sided match. Probably just as well, they tell me that Aylia's been
getting over-confident.
CLEMMIE (26-4630) (32-48-1,160) of GOLDEN CANYON fought WARDUKE (11-5930) (62-
80-3,154) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. CLEMMIE was overpowered by WARDUKE in an exciting 1
minute one-sided bout. Too short to be really exciting. Most people can't watch
that fast.

MICHAEL COOPER (4-5943) (29-16-1,168) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC2 fought CONNOR
MACLEOD (11-5532) (73-87-0,161) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. MICHAEL COOPER bested CONNOR
MACLEOD in a crowd pleasing 3 minute brawl. And you know this must have been a
really good one, because it started to rain in the middle of the fight and the crowd
was still pleased.
BLACKRAZOR (11-4091) (70-152-2,208) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought MAXIMUM EFFORT
(82-11013) (18-12-0,166) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1W. BLACKRAZOR slimly won victory over
MAXIMUM EFFORT in an action packed 2 minute duel. Shaving Max. Eff. close and all
that. Anybody ever seen a Whiterazor wandering around the arenas? Seems like we
should have equal time for other colors. Greenrazor. Pinkrazor?
SANDS (11-4123) (73-147-3,192) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought RHYNIAN ALANDA (105-9)
(0-0-0,200) of Various Odds and Bods. SANDS was viciously subdued by RHYNIAN ALANDA
in an action packed 3 minute gory fight. A bit of an embarrassment for Sands, but
that's part of a gladiator's life. You have an off day, maybe come to the arena hung
over, and wham, someone's waiting to take advantage of it.
NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (73-87-1,201) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought BERYL (105-26)
(0-0-0,181) of Various Odds and Bods. NIXIE SEASPRITE demolished BERYL in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided brawl. It might be that "Beryl" is a jinxed name; gem-
cutters tell me that beryls tend to be fragile and easily shattered by a careless
stroke.
     WOLVERINE (66-3871) (76-126-7,204) of X-FORCE fought RHYNIAN ALANDA (105-9) (0-
0-0,200) of Various Odds and Bods. WOLVERINE was devastated by RHYNIAN ALANDA in an
exciting 1 minute mismatched conflict. Wait a minute, hasn't she already fought
today? Right, against Wolverine's colleague Sands, and she won that one, too.
She'll be unbearable in the Wolf's Head tonight. Remind me to stay out of her way.

The challenge matches:
     SALEM (82-42046) (21-10-0,139) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-23 challenged LORIS KEY (26-
4706) (28-36-2,101) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 38. SALEM was overpowered by LORIS KEY
in an exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Loris was heard--so they tell me-
-to be muttering some dire threats involving pies. Or maybe threats due to incidents
involving pies. But pies and threats were definitely involved.
     TYRA (81-416) (31-18-1,116) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SARINA (26-4220) (32-
42-1,115) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 1. TYRA was savagely defeated by SARINA in an
exciting 5 minute gruesome Challenge fight. So, Sarina was Most Challenged and Not
Pleased About it. And, apparently, not in any hurry. Still, that should have given
plenty of time for her to demonstrate skills.
     DARNESHA (82-42015) (25-7-1,195) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 challenged VAN HELSING
(11-6338) (56-67-1,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. Down 7. DARNESHA vanquished VAN
HELSING in an action packed 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. The question here is,
did Van even have time to notice he was in a fight? It isn't like alertness is his
middle name.
     TEEVELLA (82-24954) (31-7-1,207) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged GOKU (46-3655)
(102-80-2,258) of DRAGONBALL Z. Up 51. TEEVELLA overcame GOKU in an action packed 2
minute gruesome Challenge melee. People keep telling me that Goku is not, in fact, a
kind of pickle. But he sure looks like one. And with all the mustard (well cut)
around him today, I was looking for the Weinermun to finish the meal.

GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (58-32-3,186) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged WORKS 4 EVIL
EMPIRE (82-3317) (24-5-0,194) of SUPERIOR FATHER. Up 8. GRANDPA RAT was savagely
defeated by WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE in a 2 minute brawl. Sometimes "Superior" means what
it says.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (66-25-0,249) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN
LAMORAK (11-4841) (72-103-1,189) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 60. BLIND GIRL
unbelievably bested LUKARIAN LAMORAK in a 2 minute Challenge fight. What is there
not to believe? I have never understood the use of that word in reporting the facts.
Improbable, yes, unbelievable, no.
     JACKSON (22-6649) (34-9-0,220) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged HUMMEL (14-1404)
(100-156-7,223) of MIKES. Up 3. JACKSON was demolished by HUMMEL in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge competition. One of those days, you know? Hummel wasn't
playing games today.
NAFISAH (22-6612) (42-21-2,218) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (76-94-0,226) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 8. NAFISAH was vanquished by VAJRA
VALMEJAR in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. And sometimes experience trumps a
manager's attention. You just can't win them all, and that's probably a good thing.

Our TV challenge: SNAKE CHARMER (22-6169) (60-25-0,186) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS TV
challenged TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (86-122-0,186) of SCARLET KNIGHTS.
Straight across. SNAKE CHARMER unbelievably bested TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD in a 3
minute Challenge fight. Aaaah! That word again! I may remove it all spy reports in
the future. But we congratulate Snake Charmer on having the TV challenge to use.

And for the title:
     MAXIMUS (22-5966) (74-43-4,355) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SMITH (14-1282)
(102-156-4,226) of MIKES. Down 129. MAXIMUS subdued SMITH in an exciting 6 minute
gory Challenge Title melee. Clearly, we were not watching an easy win here. Smith
might not have the rank, but he's got the experience to put up a tough fight.
Congratulations to both.

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

To whom it may concern: What is this crap with merging down the ADM arenas? If I
wanted to run in DM 100 or 104, don't you think I would have sent my warriors there?
I run here because it is small, it is intimate, I trust the managers here and I can
develop and improve my warriors without the scouting eye of other tourney managers.
It's bad enough that we don't have regional basic arenas anymore, as a general rule,
I do not want to be in the same arena with some of the other managers who play in the
other regionals--if I did, I would run there. Some of us like the arena just the way
it is. -- Manager

Jorja -- While I appreciate all of the hard work you put in this arena, if it's
becoming a burden, you don't have to do it. Personals are not the only way to
measure player participation, both Sentinel and myself are obviously active in the
Duel II gaming community if you look online--we can't go back 15 years into the
past--there are other ways of player communication these days. -- Manager

Happy 500th turn Andorak! It has been a great ride. -- Detective Kellumbo

Where's My Tourney -- Ahh, I sure enjoyed that fight more using my new faves. --
Jackson

Tyra -- How surprising! No, seriously, good enough for going on with. For some
reason you make me think of glazed tarts with lemon-and-plum filling. -- Clemmie
P.S. And I'm not a dessert kind of cook, normally.

Warduke -- Oh, it's you. Well, listen, I an NOT going to roast you a whole boar with
mashed potatoes around it. The very idea makes me bilious. -- Sarina

Solaris -- Eggs, fried sunny side up? -- Loris Key
P.S. Nobody can be creative when Daylight Savings Time begins. Because the time
isn't being saved for US, some Big Shot is going to take all those extra hours of
daylight and hoard them for himself to goof off in.

Shinorr -- Beef stock, always useful to have around. -- Golderie
P.S. Made with shin and neck bones.

Or hlam. -- Go-Fer, laughing hysterically at his own wit

If there were supposed to be more personals here, our apologies. Hal took the
weekend off, and we're still trying to catch up with the mail. They should
     appear next time.
