West of Fratsfa:

Elosjon hesitated, on the brink of rushing forward, and looked at Fandil. "I'm
willing to do..." he swallowed, "anything to stop the--" He swallowed again. "Even
dying, if that will prevent someone from loosing Chaos Magic here."
Fandil nodded. "I expected no less from you."
Elosjon wasn't sure if that was good or bad. Did it mean the old mage thought
him noble-spirited, or a fool, or both, or...?
"But rushing forward blindly will not defeat this enemy. We must plan a
little." He squinted up at the looming castle again. "Though we may have little
time for it. If the magician is at all alert, he will have noticed us, and even if
he has not, his watchdog will."
The demonic watchdog. Elosjon shivered and glanced around quickly. Would they
smell it when the monster approached, or had they gotten used to smelling the sulfur
now and wouldn't notice until it was too late? "Maybe we should get out of sight,"
he suggested.
Fandil shrugged and looked up at the sky. "I suppose we might as well; it looks
like rain. But it won't make any difference to our enemy--he will see us wherever we
are once we extend our powers." He turned and moved toward the trees that grew along
the base of the near-vertical slope.
     "Not into the town?"
"There is no security for us in the watchdog's lair."
"Oh... right." Elosjon hurried to keep up with his mentor, panting. It was
disconcerting sometimes that the old man could move so quickly and keep going for so
long. He himself, though young enough to be at least Fandil's grandson and maybe
great-grandson, was exhausted, and he was too tired to care who knew it.
How could the trees be that far away? Were they ever going to reach them? No,
no, that was just tiredness. Elosjon sneaked a look at the sky, where the clouds
were getting blacker and lower. And tripped, almost going down flat except that
Fandil caught him and dragged him onward. Into shelter just as the rain began to
come down. Elosjon was breathing hard, he had a pain in his side, and sweat was
running down his face and body; he wrapped his arms around a tree in order to stay
upright. If this was the kind of thing that senior mages had to be ready for, then
he needed a lot more training.
     "Good!"
Elosjon raised his head away from the tree to look at Fandil. The old mage was
watching the rain coming down and seemed pleased by it. "Why?"
"There are dangerous creatures that like being out in rain storms," Fandil said,
"but they aren't sulfur-smelling demonic watchdogs. One thing we don't have to worry
about. Of course, our Enemy may have some wet-weather watchdog, too!"
Elosjon groaned. "I don't want to know." Fandil laughed at that, actually
laughed! If it didn't take so much energy, the young man would have considered that
insulting. No, of course not. Fandil wouldn't insult him. He pulled himself
together. "Now what?"
"Now we make a plan. I suppose you don't know anything about the castle, or any
more about the magician there except that he's probably the son of the last lord of
Mountain Home and went somewhere far away to study?"
     Elosjon shook his head.
"Not a problem, we can work with what we've got already," Fandil said, patting
his shoulder. "And really, the hint of Chaos Magic is enough." The old mage's face
set grimly and suddenly looked a lot older than seemed possible. "He's been studying
Folstrom materials, even if he didn't find the Folstrom themselves to study with."
Folstrom! Elosjon shuddered. The Folstrom, who had nearly destroyed Alastari
once--with Chaos Magic--were the monsters who lurked at the back of every
Alastarian's mind, the ultimate image of evil and depravity, never to be forgiven.
How could anyone seek out their learning? He asked the question aloud.
"Some people would go into the very heart of wickedness in search of power, and
vengeance is a strong motive, too," Fandil said. He sighed and sat down on a tree
root. "He will not be easy to defeat, but we have learned a few things since the
Folstrom were driven away. Sit down, boy, so I don't have to strain my neck talking
to you. I am going to tell you spells that you will never, on pain of worse than
death, repeat, nor even use if it isn't the most desperate last chance."
"Why?" Elosjon slid down to sit beside him. "Why keep them secret, why not use
them, why tell me at all?"
"Because these spells are as dangerous in their way as Chaos Magic, because
there is a good chance that using them will destroy you, and because someone has to
know them and be ready to use them as the final reserve. This is a battle to death
and beyond, young man, and we must make what preparations we can."

Andor:

Outcast Orchid got her companion out of the city mostly by dragging him along.
He kept protesting that he wasn't worth her efforts and could buy her time to escape
with his life, but she didn't listen. Men and their Heroic Gestures! It was clear
that whatever this fellow had done in the past, he had a good heart. He'd saved her
before she even realized she was in danger, and Orchid was honest enough to admit
that left to herself, she might not have gotten away from the parade route in time.
Furthermore, if he had been involved with setting up this false king at the
beginning, then he knew stuff that might help defeat the usurpers. Lady Fern would
know what questions to ask him.
Orchid didn't relax until they were past the outer circle of estates around
Andor. It was too bad the city didn't have a wall, that made it so much easier to
tell when you were away from it. Here, even though there were no more mansions, the
roadside was peppered with smaller houses and big vegetable gardens and orchards
and.... She shook her head. So maybe they were clear of the city and maybe they
weren't. Would the people in charge of the palace and the government be watching the
roads?
Drumming hooves behind them. Orchid had a guilty feeling that she had almost
summoned them by just thinking about--
Her companion seized her arm and dragged her off the road and through the ditch
beside it, pulling her down behind a bank of reeds. She did not need his sign to
keep silent.
Half a dozen horsemen in the palace livery. One looked like a nobleman, one a
clerk with a bundle of scrolls clutched against his chest and an uneasy seat on his
mount. The other four were soldiers, no mistaking that.
When the horsemen were out of sight, Orchid began to get up. It was wet in the
ditch, and not exactly warm, and there were mosquitoes or something.
Her companion shook his head and pulled her back down, gesturing toward the city
again. Puzzled, she looked along the road, saw nothing, and then back at him. He
gestured for her to wait. She sighed (quietly) and waited. Five minutes. Ten. A
vague sort of sound, not hoofbeats or anything so definite, but coming from the city
along the road.
Presently something came into sight. At first glance it might be taken for a
man on a horse, but it wasn't a man and it wasn't a horse. Orchid groped for
concepts that would allow her to see it, but the thing was so alien that her eyes
kept sliding away. She couldn't call it anything but a monster, and knew the word
was inadequate. And that if she had stood earlier when she'd wanted to, it would
have seen her. And... eaten her or whatever things like that did.
It made snuffling sounds. Could it smell them in the ditch? She risked a
glance at her companion. He was tense but not alarmed. Maybe it wouldn't smell
them, then.
It passed out of sight to the south in the wake of the earlier group.
"I know back roads," her companion whispered in her ear. "I think we will be
safe if we take them. No telling how many more patrols will come along here."
Orchid nodded. Her neck felt stiff. "What was... that?"
He shrugged. "Who knows? Some kind of Chaos creature." He paused for a
moment, and she saw that he was blushing. "I guess you might as well know my name.
I'm Herlas, originally from Zensu. Magician."
She caught his hand and shook it. "Outcast Orchid, gladiator from Fratsfa. Now
let's go."

Fratsfa:

There were people standing around the portal, Sizzling Sunflower supposed they
could be called guards, though they weren't very militant looking.
Beside her, Lenpro said, "Armed but not alert--they won't be able to stop us
except by the freakiest chance. Straight on through, girl, and no hesitation."
     "What if we get separated?"
     "You keep going."
     "But--"
     "You keep going, girl."
"Knowledge of this place, this pocket dimension, is this going to make a big
difference back in the real world?"
"By itself, probably not. But that it could exist at all, yes, that's
important. I don't know what it means--that'll be for my brother Fandil to figure
out--but I know it's important."
"So we have to get out and tell him. Okay." She touched her sword and looked
at the people around the Gate. Three mancats, two others more ordinary looking.
"Not a problem."

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

A splendid turnout! We of Andorak can hold up our heads with pride when faced
with the other regional arenas on the Isle. Whether we can carry off the Regional
Contest is another matter, but at least this place is looking like a live arena
instead of a ghost, and at the moment, that's all I ask.
True, we have a report of someone here "charging into immovable walls and
challenging dead trees," but there is no supporting evidence, so we can probably
discount it.
Kellumbo's Kids are avoiding The Plague, which is rumored--falsely, I'm sure--to
be carrying incurable diseases. I'm quite sure that any diseases they are carrying
are curable.
Loris Key got the most challenges. Rumor has it that she promised one of her
best pies to any gladiator who can save her from having to fight "the same old
faces."
We had twenty-eight fights, a respectable number in this century, and only two
standbys involved. Fifty-four active gladiators! Is this good, or is it really
good?
Of those fights, ten were challenge matches, though none of them tv challenges.
Perhaps we'll have some tvs after the upcoming tourney, eh?

BELOW XEROE (41-1513) (21-17-2,64) of THE STORM FRONT fought SHINORR (105-1) (0-
0-0,60) of Lean Mean Standbys. BELOW XEROE was overcome by SHINORR in an exciting 3
minute brutal fight. A bit embarrassing, but surely Below can claim distraction by
all those waving tentacles. Shinorr's almost as bad as Yogonith that way.
STRICTER (46-2304) (19-10-4,71) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought KNEE BREAKER (26-4770)
(17-12-0,62) of ULTRA-VIOLENT. STRICTER was overpowered by KNEE BREAKER in a 1
minute uneven fight. The Infirmarian is a bit annoyed at this, what with injuries to
the knees being so tricky to repair properly.
     SOLARIS (46-3759) (38-115-0,76) of RUBY DRAGONS fought GO-FER (26-4444) (33-55-
2,90) of GOLDEN CANYON. SOLARIS was handily defeated by GO-FER in an action packed 1
minute mismatched bout. What a pair. If you ask me, the only thing Go-Fer had going
for him is that lucky I.D. number. Four-four-four-four. Hard to beat.
KNIGHT MARE (14-2615) (15-11-1,58) of CHECKMATE fought FLESH FLAYER (26-4751)
(24-11-1,79) of ULTRA-VIOLENT. KNIGHT MARE was vanquished by FLESH FLAYER in a 1
minute one-sided fray. I think these two were well matched, ah, conceptually. As to
their arena experience... not so well matched. Harlogen Dri'ith, our handicapper,
has some weird ideas as to what constitutes a "fair" match. You may have noticed
this.

SARINA (26-4220) (37-52-1,153) of GOLDEN CANYON fought DOMINION (22-5043) (20-
18-0,118) of ZOMBIE SQUAD III. SARINA won victory over DOMINION in a 2 minute bout.
What, does this mean she's got dominion over Dominion?
KALLORE (14-3061) (25-9-1,156) of CHECKMATE fought VAN HELSING (11-6338) (60-78-
1,122) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. KALLORE vanquished VAN HELSING in an exciting 1 minute
one-sided fight. Define "exciting." This fight was so short, I blinked and missed
it.
VAJRA VALMEJAR (11-4928) (85-100-0,196) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought MANDRAKE (68-
3259) (39-34-1,173) of SERPENT'S HOLD. VAJRA VALMEJAR lost to MANDRAKE in a popular
1 minute match. There's probably some hidden significance in the names here, but I
don't know what it is. It's hidden, after all.
     WOLVERINE (66-3871) (84-133-7,199) of X-FORCE fought SPAWN (14-2724) (45-35-
0,180) of CHECKMATE. WOLVERINE demolished SPAWN in a 1 minute one-sided fight. The
sort of thing that happens. Count yourself lucky to be alive, Spawn, although
considering the way Wolverine was beginning to gnaw on your leg, maybe you won't call
it good. Somebody should feed that beast.

ATROPHY (14-4034) (24-23-1,184) of THE DEATH SQUAD fought GOLDERIE (26-4657)
(41-43-1,171) of GOLDEN CANYON. ATROPHY was vanquished by GOLDERIE in a popular 1
minute mismatched fray. Ah, the wrong qualities were allowed to atrophy, I see. If
you smile nicely, Atrophy, you can probably get Golderie to cook for you, and that
will build you up in no time.
DOUGH BERMIN (41-1633) (36-22-3,183) of DA DOG POWNDAZ fought BEAVIS (14-3996)
(26-28-4,196) of THE DEATH SQUAD. DOUGH BERMIN was viciously subdued by BEAVIS in a
popular 4 minute gruesome match. As you can see, Dough didn't go down easily. They
tell me this is good, that you have a better chance to learn from your opponent. Is
this true?
DEAD OF WINTER (41-970) (37-36-2,190) of THE PLAGUE fought BERYL (105-26) (0-0-
0,181) of Lean Mean Standbys. DEAD OF WINTER was handily defeated by BERYL in a 1
minute mismatched competition. You can see why today's standbys are characterized as
"lean and mean." They both won. At least Beryl doesn't have tentacles.
BLACKRAZOR (11-4091) (79-158-2,198) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought SKOOBEE DUU (41-
1345) (36-39-1,188) of DA DOG POWNDAZ. BLACKRAZOR savagely defeated SKOOBEE DUU in
an exciting 5 minute gory bout. Fortunately the orderlies were able to save all
severed parts, and the Infirmarian promises to reattach the trimmed ears and docked
tail so well that "no one will be able to tell it happened."
MICHAEL COOPER (4-5943) (39-21-1,208) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC2 fought WARDUKE (11-
5930) (72-85-3,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. MICHAEL COOPER viciously subdued WARDUKE
in an exciting 4 minute brutal fight. Good. Warduke has been getting a bit
obnoxious in his cups. Maybe this will cool him down.

NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (82-93-1,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought ZERO THE HERO
(14-4129) (28-15-1,198) of THE DEATH SQUAD. NIXIE SEASPRITE was vanquished by ZERO
THE HERO in a 1 minute one-sided fray. It is, as they say, "what heroes do."
TEEFA (40-2943) (55-45-0,220) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought SANDS (11-4123) (78-157-
3,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TEEFA won victory over SANDS in a crowd pleasing 2 minute
bout. I don't remember offhand how many years Sands has been fighting here. I
salute his doggedness, but I would lift a cup of congratulations if he ever retires,
too.
DALLAS (18-6860) (58-42-0,422) of SUPERIOR FORCES 6N fought TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD
(11-4304) (91-132-0,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DALLAS handily defeated TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD in a 1 minute one-sided conflict. It was probably the Cowgirls.
WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE (82-3317) (32-12-1,218) of SUPERIOR FATHER fought HUMMEL
(14-1404) (110-161-7,203) of MIKES. WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE was demolished by HUMMEL in
a popular 1 minute mismatched match. There's just no security in a job like that,
Works. Probably no insurance, either.
THE PINK RANGER (68-9166) (53-40-1,331) of SUPERIOR FORCES X fought DAIN BRAMAGE
(14-3935) (34-24-2,193) of THE DEATH SQUAD. THE PINK RANGER demolished DAIN BRAMAGE
in a crowd pleasing 5 minute mismatched match. Ah, with a name like The Pink Ranger,
we're probably looking at another hero, yes? There seem to be quite a few of them
around.

The challenge matches:
WHITE FLAME (52-1807) (20-15-0,128) of PYROMANIA challenged MAXIMUM EFFORT (82-
11013) (23-22-0,176) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1W. Up 48. WHITE FLAME was handily defeated
by MAXIMUM EFFORT in a 1 minute Challenge bout. Good gods, White, what did you
expect?
SIR BARKALOT (41-1461) (27-24-3,128) of DA DOG POWNDAZ challenged CLEMMIE (26-
4630) (34-61-1,110) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 18. SIR BARKALOT vanquished CLEMMIE in a
popular 1 minute brutal one-sided Challenge duel. This is not the way to woo a cook,
Sir.
BLYZZ ARD (41-1859) (23-9-4,140) of THE STORM FRONT challenged LORIS KEY (26-
4706) (32-47-2,166) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up 26. BLYZZ ARD vanquished LORIS KEY in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge duel. Will the be pie enough to share?
PHLASH PHLUDD (41-1077) (27-25-0,152) of THE STORM FRONT challenged KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (67-81-1,170) of RUBY DRAGONS. Up 18. PHLASH PHLUDD was
overpowered by KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN in a 2 minute Challenge melee. It was probably the
sandbags. I know you're supposed to use them against flooding, but I didn't realize
they could also be missle weapons.
ALBINO DALMATION (41-1672) (35-29-3,198) of DA DOG POWNDAZ challenged SHERRI
(82-15114) (30-23-1,217) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3201. Up 19. ALBINO DALMATION was
overpowered by SHERRI in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. But at least the
blood spots don't show. They just look like ordinary dapples, right?

SHADOW OUT OF TIME (41-1622) (33-21-1,187) of THE PLAGUE challenged CONNOR
MACLEOD (11-5532) (82-93-1,196) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. Up 9. SHADOW OUT OF TIME
vanquished CONNOR MACLEOD in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. The stewards
told me afterward that Shadow insisted on a short fight, even though Connor didn't
want to surrender; something about being out of time.
NAY PALM (52-1439) (36-19-0,194) of PYROMANIA challenged FINALITY (82-4063) (39-
20-1,215) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P. Up 21. NAY PALM savagely defeated FINALITY in a
crowd pleasing 12 minute Challenge match. Well, these two definitely made a pair to
draw against. The trouble with a lot of fights is thinking about something to SAY
about a lot of fights, you know. My brain is overheating, but I think I can finish
this before it seizes up....
     VISION (26-1573) (136-55-4,207) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged MALICE (46-2336)
(46-24-1,201) of SERPENT'S HOLD. Down 6. VISION won victory over MALICE in a crowd
pleasing 5 minute gory Challenge brawl. Bit of an experience difference here, but it
is to Malice's credit that he (or she or it) held Vision for so long. It ain't easy.
JACKSON (22-6649) (42-16-0,247) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN LAMORAK
(11-4841) (76-114-1,215) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 32. JACKSON was handily defeated
by LUKARIAN LAMORAK in a 1 minute Challenge match. Experience isn't much help when
your opponent has your number.

For the title, refusing to sit and wait for whatever might come, DEATH FOG (45-4017)
(76-32-0,291) of SUPERIOR FORCES challenged GOKU (46-3655) (109-88-2,223) of
DRAGONBALL Z. Down 68. DEATH FOG devastated GOKU in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge
Title fight. We salute Death Fog, even if he didn't write a column. Way to go, or
something.

Jackson -- That was pretty devious to down challenging by 30 points. I thought
Kellumbo taught you better manners! -- Nay Palm

Michael Cooper -- I see a tie breaker in our future... -- Albino Dalmation

Sherri -- Okay, lady, I get the point (literally). I'm keeping away! -- Skoobee Duu

Maximum Effort -- Where did that tread mill go? -- Dough Bermin

Sarina -- Things were going just fine, until um.... well you know how it turned out.
-- Sir Barkalot

Mandrake -- I'd like a recount... I don't see that happening again! -- White Flame

Reaper -- I've been thinking (which usually gets me into trouble), maybe I'll just
kill one of your guys in ADM instead of DM. That would lessen the sting a bit, no?
Stay away from that new guy I was telling you about! <grin> -- Marma Duke

Sir Barkalot -- Are you any kin to the pup across the street? -- Sarina

Sands -- May you drown in that bathtub. -- Golderie
P.S. And it serves you RIGHT to be maxed and neglected.

Blackrazor -- May you be Inducted at the Split. -- Loris Key

Yes, all right, we know it isn't "friendly" to snipe at the Scarlet Knights, but
we're so TIRED of fighting them after YEARS of them just running on automatic here.
They don't deserve the comments, I guess, but heck, they don't deserve the neglect,
either. -- various members of Golden Canyon

Khorne Shadowspawn -- Oh, well. -- Clemmie

Dominion -- Damn. My teammates are gonna jump on me for losing to a new face. How
about if you quick get an "old face" mask? I really don't want to listen to them
complaining. -- Go-Fer

White Flame -- Yes, I suppose it was, but the flame was too hot--the ribs would have
been nothing but charcoal! So I had to cool you down. -- Sarina

Sir Barkalot -- Which of us are you calling an old dog? -- Clemmie
