Fratsfa:
Outcast Orchid looked down the hill at the jumble of buildings crowding along
the river and heaved a sigh of relief. "Almost home, and I am *so* glad--I really
need a bath--all this lying around in ditches to hide just isn't--"
"We cannot enter the city openly," Herlas said. He sound scandalized by the
very idea. "I doubt that I would be given free passage, and even if I were, you
should not be seen with someone having such a dark reputation--"
"Oh, pooh! *I* never heard of you, and probably most people haven't, and
besides, what makes you think I care?" She squinted at him and opened her mouth to
make another comment, then closed it with the observation unspoken. Maybe he did
secretly enjoy his reputation as being a "bad boy of magic," but there was no need to
force him to admit it. Men were silly about things like that. "I know the back-
streets really well," she said. "And we're dirty enough no one will want to get
close and find out more."
She could see him wanting to argue and was glad when he changed his mind and
just followed her. She wove through narrow streets, narrower alleys, avoiding
people--who were avoiding them, so it was easy--and picking up familiar landmarks.
Getting close to the Flower Shoppe.
Sizzling Sunflower and the manager Lenpro came into sight, almost running, heading
for the same goal.
Orchid looked at her teammate and blinked. To Herlas, she said, "Does it seem
to you that Sunflower is... glowing?"
He hesitated. "She is certainly... radiant," he answered finally. "You mean
that isn't normal for her?"
"Maybe it's just the light."
The two pairs came together at the back door to the complex of buildings that
formed the Flower Shoppe. Orchid and Sunflower hugged each other, babbling about
"amazing things to report." Lenpro looked at Herlas and raised an eyebrow, then
gestured for the younger man to precede him into the building. Going first and
having people with unknown intentions at his back didn't appeal, but Herlas reminded
himself... well, he was sure there were extenuating circumstances, but he'd think
about them later. Simply getting out of sight of the hordes of ill-wishers produced
by his imagination--they were bound to show up any minute now--was good enough for
now. He went in.
Lady Fern hustled them into her private quarters (leaving a full house of Flower
Girls crowding the nearest rooms eager for news). She pushed them into chairs, waved
at a tray with bottles and glasses and plates of snacks, and sat down herself. On
the edge of her chair. "What has been HAPPENING?" she demanded. "You've been gone
for DAYS--"
"Days? Really days?" Sunflower asked. "It didn't feel like that long--"
"A pocket universe," Lenpro said. "Not particularly dangerous to Alastari in
itself, so far as I can tell, but it might indicate problems to come. What if more
of them form? We should probably do something about it. Where's Fandil? He'll know
whether we should worry." He waved to the others for their report.
"There was a golem in Andor," Orchid said, "and it was killed by gladiators, and
then the gladiators were killed by a mob and it probably isn't safe to be a gladiator
around there right now. And a chaos monster on the road when we were getting away."
"A Lord Korneth who describes himself as being 'from Sengir', a place I have
never heard of, is in control of Andor," Herlas added. "Most of the bureaucrats
support him, though whether that is from conviction or to safeguard their jobs I
don't know. A golem was made to look like the king--I did the illusions--supposedly
to allay worry about him. No one knows exactly what happened to the king, mind you,
but the people most likely to know anything at all believe that he is gone--wherever
and however--for good. The later stuff, killing the golem and giving gladiators a
bad name, increasing the size of the standing army, vilifying elves and Aruaki," he
hesitated and shrugged. "I believe that Korneth is using all this to distract or
pacify the general population while he takes complete power."
"And the chaos monsters!" Orchid reminded him. "Somebody sent real chaos
monsters to chase us when we left Andor. We need to tell Fandil about them, he'll
know what to do."
"I'm sure he will," Fern said. She looked suddenly older. "But Fandil is not
here. He left days ago to track down a magician in the mountains, and we have heard
nothing since Ravishing Redbud, who accompanied him part of the way, returned."
In the mountains west of Fratsfa:
The young mage Elosjon wiped sweat from his face. Though the morning was cold,
they had been walking and climbing since first light, and that was hot work. For
him, anyway; his studies had not included anything more physical than carrying a book
from shelf to table or lifting a wand. Fandil seemed to be doing fine. Pride could
only do so much. Elosjon gasped, "Can we stop for a few minutes?"
Fandil glanced around and gestured toward an outcropping with two trees which
would shield them from anyone ahead. "Surely, and next time don't wait till you're
about to fall down to ask."
"I wasn't sure it was okay to talk," Elosjon muttered.
"I doubt that will make any difference," the older mage said, and smiled. "We
aren't exactly walking silently, you know." He paused and cocked his head sideways
as if listening to something he alone could hear. "I don't think anyone--the mage,
at least--is paying attention. The watchdogs, though... might be different."
Elosjon shivered, wishing that his imagination didn't paint those possible
watchdogs in such demonic colors.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Okay, here we are with, so far as I know, nothing imperative telling me to hurry
this to the printer before I have time to shake a pen at it. Olaf did the rough
notes, but the clerks tell me he was more sober than otherwise. I'll believe that
when I see it, but I can read most of this stuff.
It would appear that the euphoniously named Mgrwonthe1sttogs! had the biggest
point gain today, twenty-five points after beating a standby. MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! (60-
8618) (22-8-1,113) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1601 fought LAWRENCE THE SOT (105-10) (0-0-
0,150) of Standbys Galore. MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! subdued LAWRENCE THE SOT in an action
packed 1 minute bout. Lawrence was, according to my secret informants, feeling no
pain even going into the fight; he (Lawrence) is reported to have said that he was
intimidated by his opponent's name and got drunk so no one would expect him to say it
clearly. A figgo for that story! No offense intended toward Mr. M., but all that
was required was for him to stick out his foot so Lawrence could trip over it.
Olaf also noted--actually, the clerks compile this stuff and just hand it to the
spy reporters--that Checkmate was most avoided, and Kellumbo's Kids did most of that
avoiding. Further, Sands got the most challenges. You have to get up early here in
Andorak to get the most challenges.
We had twenty-one fights here, the first of which I have already mentioned
(Mgrwonthe1stTogs! vs Lawrence the Sot). Two fights, meaning one besides that one,
involved standbys. Nine were challenge matches, two of them being tv challenges.
Good show! This is much better than, say, six months ago. Let's try to hang onto
this active condition, eh?
The fights themselves:
CLEMMIE (26-4630) (35-64-1,142) of GOLDEN CANYON fought VAN HELSING (11-6338)
(63-79-1,143) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. CLEMMIE was overpowered by VAN HELSING in a 1
minute uneven fight. Rumor has it that Clemmie has threatened to sic a vampire on
Van Helsing if he doesn't stop raiding her kitchen for garlic.
SARINA (26-4220) (39-54-1,148) of GOLDEN CANYON fought SEREPHIM (22-6713) (21-0-
1,99) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. SARINA handily defeated SEREPHIM in a 1 minute mismatched
competition. Informed sources tell me that Sarina has agreed to memorialize this
uneven victory by baking Serephim an angelfood cake.
WARDUKE (11-5930) (72-89-3,146) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought KETTELMAN (26-4749)
(24-23-1,96) of GOLDEN CANYON. WARDUKE overpowered KETTELMAN in a 1 minute one-sided
match. Not an easy introduction to fighting on the Isle after an early career in a
small arena, but there it is, this kind of thing happens.
CONNOR MACLEOD (11-5532) (82-97-1,179) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought TRYPTOPHAN
(71-5634) (20-11-0,166) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC. CONNOR MACLEOD was devastated by
TRYPTOPHAN in an exciting 2 minute one-sided fight. Definitely a superior force at
work here, but perhaps not as relaxing as one might expect from Tryptophan.
KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (69-83-1,176) of RUBY DRAGONS fought BIKINI LINE
(25-4545) (24-25-0,123) of SUPERIOR FORCES. KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN beat BIKINI LINE in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute brawl. Many men have tried this, and I am told that most
ended up regretting it. But sometimes not right away.
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (93-134-0,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought GOLDERIE
(26-4657) (42-46-1,177) of GOLDEN CANYON. TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD overpowered GOLDERIE
in an action packed 1 minute uneven struggle. Some days I wonder why these people--
Aramalias's boys, nothing personal against 'em--why they haven't been Inducted to
Primus.
WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE (82-3317) (33-15-1,194) of SUPERIOR FATHER fought LUKARIAN
LAMORAK (11-4841) (79-115-1,206) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE was handily
defeated by LUKARIAN LAMORAK in a 1 minute fight. And thus are the Minions of Evil
Empires thwarted hip and thigh. Sometimes, anyway. Of course, it could all be a
Plot to lure people into taking the Evil Empire for granted, and when they're all
lured to complacency, WHAMMO! Stranger things have happened.
MANDRAKE (68-3259) (42-35-1,194) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-
4992) (84-95-1,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. MANDRAKE bested NIXIE SEASPRITE in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute bout. Very strange, I could have sworn that Mandrake was a
magician, not a warrior. Maybe a warrior-mage?
BLACKRAZOR (11-4091) (82-159-2,215) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought FINALITY (82-4063)
(40-23-1,204) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P. BLACKRAZOR was viciously subdued by FINALITY in
an exciting 5 minute brutal contest. It would, perhaps, have been more, ah, 'poetic'
if Blackrazor had been killed (finalized, as it were), but this is Andorak and we try
to avoid having that happen often.
VISION (26-1573) (137-55-4,226) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought GHRYSHAN (105-25) (0-
0-0,181) of Standbys Galore. VISION overpowered GHRYSHAN in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided match. Aha! HERE is the other standby, I was wondering when we'd
see him. Easy meat for Vision.
DALLAS (18-6860) (61-43-0,222) of SUPERIOR FORCES 6N fought GOKU (46-3655) (111-
90-2,218) of DRAGONBALL Z. DALLAS was beaten by GOKU in a popular 2 minute melee.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you could fight to a draw?
Ah, the challenge matches! Mostly the challenges have come from Kellumbo's Kids (as
usual), but not all.
JEROME (22-6675) (18-5-0,51) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SOLARIS (46-3759)
(39-118-0,58) of RUBY DRAGONS. Up 7. JEROME vanquished SOLARIS in a popular 1
minute one-sided Challenge duel. And a rousing cheer for Jerome. Even with probable
tourney fights, this is a significant victory. I hope the skills were good, also.
BRADACK (82-46007) (14-6-0,71) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS 50 challenged STRICTER (46-
2304) (20-13-4,82) of SERPENT'S HOLD. Up 11. BRADACK won victory over STRICTER in a
popular 2 minute Challenge duel. If this is the lead-in for a call to looser morals
in Andorak, I warn you now, it will fail. We are Andorians! We do not 'do' loose
morals.
INDIA (81-391) (36-23-0,114) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged DOMINION (22-5043)
(20-22-0,106) of ZOMBIE SQUAD III. Down 8. INDIA was handily defeated by DOMINION
in a 2 minute uneven Challenge fight. Just because he's a zombie doesn't mean he's
asleep at the switch, India.
DARNESHA (82-42015) (34-16-1,200) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 challenged HUMMEL (14-
1404) (113-162-7,211) of MIKES. Up 11. DARNESHA was overpowered by HUMMEL in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Hummel is another who could go to Primus
without leaving anyone weeping about it here.
NIGHTBANE (81-377) (40-19-0,182) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KALLORE (14-3061)
(29-9-1,181) of CHECKMATE. Down 1. NIGHTBANE luckily beat KALLORE in a crowd
pleasing 5 minute Challenge competition. Crowd pleasing...? Ah, I see, the Chess
Club showed up. Well, good, they need to get out more.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (70-38-3,248) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SANDS (11-
4123) (78-161-3,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 58. GRANDPA RAT defeated SANDS in a 1
minute Challenge fight. Sands was, you may recall, the most-challenged gladiator
today. Whether that means a simple double-challenge, or more than one potential
opponent, I can't say.
The tv-challenges, and congratulations to those who happen to HAVE tv-challenges to
use.
DUMPWEED (82-13924) (26-3-0,155) of SUPERIOR FORCES B105 TV challenged LORIS KEY
(26-4706) (34-49-2,162) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up 7. DUMPWEED vanquished LORIS KEY in a
1 minute uneven Challenge battle. If you get a pie out of this, Dumpweed, you will
be a miracle-worker indeed.
SHERRI (82-15114) (33-24-1,208) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3201 TV challenged WOLVERINE
(66-3871) (86-135-7,212) of X-FORCE. Up 4. SHERRI devastated WOLVERINE in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge fight. And how the crowd does like to see an old fossil
slip.
For the title:
THE PINK RANGER (68-9166) (57-40-1,377) of SUPERIOR FORCES X challenged SPAWN
(14-2724) (48-36-1,276) of CHECKMATE. Down 101. THE PINK RANGER was demolished by
SPAWN in a 3 minute uneven Challenge Title fight. Uneven, maybe, but not in the
obvious way. A salute to the Pink Ranger for going out to meet his fate, and one to
Spawn for winning.

Hmm, Lukarian Lamorak wants lutefisk. I'm not doing that. Don't like fish at all,
frankly. -- Golderie
I'm not going to tell you want Nixie Seasprite wanted me to cook, and I'm not going
to do it, either. I don't *care* that she won the fight, some things just don't get
done in *my* kitchen. -- Loris Key
Kallore -- I could make a chess pie. They're quite good, actually. Like a pecan pie
but with a more rational level of sweetening. -- Sarina
P.S. Well, you know how it is. The basic sickly-sweet pecan pie that everyone knows
and can barely stand started as a sugar pie. No fruit, no nuts. Mostly corn syrup,
and then someone thought, why not throw in some nuts and we can pretend it has
redeeming social value. As if! Chess pie is much better.
