In the mountains west of Fratsfa:
Elosjon had almost all his attention on the spell he was using. A little on the
bear-golem itself, too, but spells had to be watched closely or they ran away from
you and did things you didn't expect. And he didn't have to worry about secondary
attacks, not with someone like Fandil to watch his back. That was just amazing--
Fandil, who had a high reputation among the experienced magicians of the Andorian
League, was watching HIS back! If he survived, he'd have something really impressive
to tell his friends. But that was for later; for now, he had to hold his ball of
lightning steady as it flew into the arms of the bear-golem. It was getting a little
loose, trying to unravel. He remembered his instructor warning him about that:
warning him that lightning didn't really want to form a ball, so he was going to have
to hold it together with his own will. He could do that... if his attention didn't
stray. He tightened it up and resisted the temptation to push it a little faster.
"Speed is the enemy of coherence in a lightning spell," his instructor had said.
Move it too fast and it would come apart.

Fandil watched the youngster for a moment and then nodded. Elosjon lacked
experience, but his instincts and training were good. If he survived this
expedition, he would be a fine magician, someday. One to be reckoned with. And for
the matter in hand, he was doing very well. The boy could be left to it while he
himself did other things.
Such as watched for other guards. True, he had said this bear-golem had been
made almost casually to frighten away ordinary people. He believed that. But he
also believed that there would be at least one genuine, dangerous watchdog. Maybe a
real demon, maybe a more carefully-made golem--
A sudden scent of sulfur-and-something announced the arrival of the real guard.
Fandil scanned the hillside quickly and saw it condense out of a drift of mist or
smoke. A true demon--it had the classic markers: red skin, hooves, horns, tail,
wings, nasty disposition. Not an impressive demon, probably one of the lowest rank.
But still, a demon, and even the least of them required careful handling.
Try simple things first. He had dealt with true demons before and knew the
drill. First a spell of banishment, with a little extra magical muscle behind it.
It... twitched. Twitched? Fandil's mustache bristled. The demon should have
vanished in a cloud of saffron smoke!
He took a deep breath and coughed a little at the sulfur fumes. Not just as
simple as it looked, then. Well, he could STILL handle it. Fandil narrowed his eyes
and traced out the patterns, the ripples, in the Arcanum that had resulted from the
encounter between demon and spell. Odd. A flat in the key of aleph, a kink in
gimel, and... a medusa-knot in the tertiary subtext? That should not be possible.
Medusa-knots were totally incompatible with the key of aleph. No one but a Chaos-
mage would even attempt--
Fandil's mind stumbled. A Chaos-mage. He had been worried about one earlier,
but he'd let that concern lapse. Big mistake. Maybe very big mistake, if this semi-
demon was alert and skillful enough to grasp him through center of the medusa-knot.
No time to try to close it now, even if he could. The important thing was to get OUT
of the key of aleph before-- No. He brought his unruly thoughts under control.
Don't even think about what could be done against him, because a truly skilled
opponent could pluck that right out of his mind. More than one mage had defeated
himself that way.
Key of epsilon, that's what he wanted. Seven right-hand sharps and a tremolo.
Twist of lemon if there's time... yes! There came the counter through the medusa-
knot: the three-legged asp. It rammed into the epsilon shield, was shredded,
twisted, and sent back. Strong, though. Even stopping it depleted his energies.
The demon's form shifted, flowing through a truly disgusting ape into something
unearthly but compellingly female. Fandil took refuge in humor, which no demon
understood: What would his sister Fern call this? A Calamitous Calla? The shape
wobbled and fell in on itself.
Fratsfa:
"Okay," Lenpro said, "not better a bad ruler than none. How do you propose to
make sure we get a good ruler, though? Or even tell if someone will make a good
ruler or not?"
"Emperor Alonj of Fratsfa--"
"Will not be acceptable to most people, because they believe he's either crazy
or a half-wit."
"He is NOT crazy or a half-wit," Fern answered. "And he has one thing that
others don't: legitimacy. It would be legitimate for Alonj to govern the whole
League."
"But he doesn't want to," Sizzling Sunflower protested. "We've all heard that."
"And sometimes we have to do things we don't want to," her teammate Outcast
Orchid said. "We've all heard that, too. If Emperor Alonj can hold off whatever
this Korneth is trying to do until Andoria finds its feet, well, I figure he's got a
duty."
Sunflower ignored that. Pointedly. "And if Emperor Alonj doesn't want to do
something, his wife will back him up," she went on.
"Unless she sees it as his duty," Orchid said. "Very strong on duty, Empress
Kitiara."

Did you ever stop to wonder who came up with the idea of beginning the year in
the middle of the winter? It's a rotten season. Cold. Gray. Wet. I don't like
it. Those of you who are going to attend the winter tournament, savor the warmth
down there!
And in the mean time, let's take a look at what else we can savor here:
Bikini Line seems to have achieved the greatest advancement in rank, going up
thirty-nine points. Van Helsing, her hapless opponent, had the greatest drop at
thirty-seven points.
Serpent's Hold was most avoided, and Kellumbo's Kids did most of the avoiding.
Talisman Shieldguard got the most challenges.
In total, we had twenty-two fights here, with only two standbys. Eat your heart
out, Debby Tonte! Eight challenge matches, two of them being tv challenges.
The fights themselves:
BINKLY (46-4115) (22-16-0,82) of DEATHTONGUE fought BRADACK (82-46007) (16-7-
0,89) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS 50. BINKLY was narrowly defeated by BRADACK in an exciting
3 minute duel. The newly arrived Binkly is, as they say, paying his dues.
CLEMMIE (26-4630) (37-65-1,140) of GOLDEN CANYON fought DOMINION (22-5043) (22-
23-0,150) of ZOMBIE SQUAD III. CLEMMIE was viciously subdued by DOMINION in an
exciting 2 minute gory bout. Pretty much what the bookies predicted.
MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! (60-8618) (24-8-1,156) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1601 fought
BUTTERHEAD (105-11) (0-0-0,150) of Random Men Off the Street. MGRWONTHE1STTOGS!
savagely defeated BUTTERHEAD in an action packed 5 minute fray. With a name like
that, you just about have to win.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (65-80-2,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought BIKINI LINE
(25-4545) (24-27-0,124) of SUPERIOR FORCES. VAN HELSING was overpowered by BIKINI
LINE in a 2 minute one-sided duel. The fight that led to major movements in the
ranks.
WARDUKE (11-5930) (74-90-3,166) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought TRYPTOPHAN (71-
5634) (21-13-0,150) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC. WARDUKE was overpowered by TRYPTOPHAN in
a 2 minute mismatched conflict. Does this mean Warduke was very relaxed after the
fight?
BLACKRAZOR (11-4091) (82-162-2,178) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought GOLDERIE (26-4657)
(43-48-1,148) of GOLDEN CANYON. BLACKRAZOR beat GOLDERIE in an exciting 3 minute
bout. I believe I heard Golderie muttering something about "filly steak." Don't
know where that came from or where it's going. Not sure I want to.
SPAWN (14-2724) (49-38-1,206) of CHECKMATE fought SANDS (11-4123) (79-163-3,195)
of SCARLET KNIGHTS. SPAWN was devastated by SANDS in an exciting 1 minute one-sided
fight. Experience telling, no doubt.
WOLVERINE (66-3871) (87-137-7,207) of X-FORCE fought HUMMEL (14-1404) (114-164-
7,195) of MIKES. WOLVERINE was handily defeated by HUMMEL in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched bout. A pair of old fossils; they probably know each other's
weaknesses inside and out.
GOKU (46-3655) (113-91-2,199) of DRAGONBALL Z fought DALLAS (18-6860) (62-45-
0,190) of SUPERIOR FORCES 6N. GOKU overpowered DALLAS in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
gruesome one-sided duel. I don't know why the crowd was shouting about "killing the
umpire." It doesn't seem appropriate, but then, maybe he's got it in for some umpire
and wants everyone to know it.
SARINA (26-4220) (42-54-1,189) of GOLDEN CANYON fought KALLORE (14-3061) (29-12-
1,180) of CHECKMATE. SARINA was devastated by KALLORE in a crowd pleasing 2 minute
mismatched bout. Do you make chessmen cookies, Sarina? Might be helpful here.
DARNESHA (82-42015) (36-17-1,213) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 fought JIMI (105-27)
(0-0-0,240) of Random Men Off the Street. DARNESHA was narrowly defeated by JIMI in
a 2 minute match. Oops!
HEMLOCK (68-2193) (44-38-2,212) of CELESTIAL KNIGHTS fought WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE
(82-3317) (34-17-1,185) of SUPERIOR FATHER. HEMLOCK demolished WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE
in a crowd pleasing 5 minute mismatched match. So, you took down the henchman,
Hemlock, but what does that do for the Evil Empire?
NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (86-96-1,225) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought MALICE (46-
2336) (48-26-1,193) of SERPENT'S HOLD. NIXIE SEASPRITE was overpowered by MALICE in
a popular 1 minute one-sided melee. Malice nixes a lot of things.
FINALITY (82-4063) (43-23-1,230) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P fought CONNOR MACLEOD
(11-5532) (83-99-2,201) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. FINALITY overpowered CONNOR MACLEOD
in a popular 1 minute gory uneven duel. Good. I like to see a fossil, someone
getting alone on inertia and massive skills, taken down by an up-and-comer.
Relatively.
JEROME (22-6675) (21-5-0,76) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SOLARIS (46-3759)
(39-121-0,47) of RUBY DRAGONS. JEROME lost to SOLARIS in a 2 minute Challenge duel.
An unpleasant surprise for Jerome, but they happen in the arena.
INDIA (81-391) (36-26-0,100) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KETTELMAN (26-4749)
(24-26-1,82) of GOLDEN CANYON. INDIA luckily beat KETTELMAN in an action packed 3
minute gruesome Challenge melee. The announcer called it luck, but there are people
who wonder about that.

propbably a subtle, profound lesson in this, but I have no idea what it might be.

LUKARIAN LAMORAK in an exciting 3 minute Challenge melee. This is truly SUPERIOR
dumpweed, mind you. Well, obviously, since it has a tv challenge.
