                                  WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT

        + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #43 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

In the mountains west of Fratsfa:

Fandil waited, poised, for the demon to take its next form. Carefully not
thinking what that next form might be, lest he give it a clue against him. Nothing
appeared. Was it through? Surely not!
A shimmer in the air and a twist of iris-colored smoke. One of the sharps in
his epsilon shield shrieked and went flat. The orthodox response to that called for
blank verse in a blue-and-magenta palette, which was a good argument for taking a
different direction. And fast, his opponent was too good--and too dangerous--for
"stop and think." Acting on an instinct he didn't question, Fandil shifted to a
ballad form in earth tones, with a hint of paprika wave at the end.
The little cloud of smoke flashed red, flashed black, and fell in on itself,
leaving a robed and hooded figure in its place. Not the demon, there was no sulfur
in its signature. The mage, his opponent. Very tall, very thin, stiff and unmoving
once it appeared. The sigil over its heart (if it was put together in human pattern)
was Folstrom.
"Begone," the hooded mage intoned. "You interfere with my necessary work! The
ways must be opened for the Masters to return--"
"The Folstrom? I don't think so," Fandil snapped.
"The Masters will know how to deal with the prancing elves and the Aruaki
beasts--"
"I seem to recall that the Folstrom idea of good government and cultural
stability was to have everyone submissive to them, and that more than half the
population of Alastari at that time died in their Chaos Games."
"They brought order and unity!" the mage shrieked. "And I have seen the Chaos
Games, and they are a performance of beauty, not like the bloody holocaust of the
arena system. The Folstrom understand the order that lies in the heart of Chaos--"
"And that has driven them mad," Fandil said. "The Folstrom are insane."
"No!" Where the mage had stood was now a shaft of intensely violet light.
Fandil could feel the power of it burning against his shield, but he had
expected this, or something like it. He was ready. His will reached down through
his feet to grip the bedrock of the mountain top, up through his raised hands into
the clouds that boiled black overhead. He seized the lighting and pulled it down
onto his enemy.

       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here, with a report from the Winter Tourney. Okay, maybe this isn't
Atlantis, but it's somewhere warm, and if that isn't a beach, at least it's sand,
and, as advertised, there are drinks with umbrellas in them. And young women with a
lot of suntan showing. By the time you read this, the tourney will be over, but
while I'm writing it, the tourney is NOT over. And a lot of you guys reading this
won't have been able to go, anyway.
I'm interviewing Zalgor Prigg, one of the managers participating in the Old
Valamantis Bloodgames, and let me tell you, Old Valamantis is not a place you want to
hang around if you don't have to. It's rotten with magic, to begin with--Folstrom
magic, the blackest there is--and then it's got all this blood and violence on top of
it, and it makes for a dark and scary venue. Anything might rise out of the ruins
around the arena, summoned by the blood and the curses of the managers.
"Mr. Prigg, could you tell us why you--"
"It was the play on words," the manager said, overriding the question. "I
couldn't resist--the chance to call a Bloodgames team Phoenix, you know, the 'rising
from the ashes of death' business. Of course, then I had to change it to Phonetix,
but that's okay, keep people guessing."
"I've heard the Commission mages talking about that name, sir, and they seem
alarmed. One of them said the name was practically a spell in itself, used here."
"I heard. That's why I had to change it."
"Have you considered what might actually rise from the ashes and blood here as a
result?"
"Well, no, but that isn't my business, you know. I manage gladiators. Let the
mages worry about what pops in from some other dimension. Besides, what if nothing
happens?"
"But, sir, there have already been reports of zombie rats and tentacled monsters
lurking in the backs of the locker rooms! And someone is bound to consider that you
have a partial responsibility--"
"No," Prigg said, "I have no responsibility for that kind of thing. I'm no
magician, I haven't been reading forbidden tomes...." He paused, looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it was TigToad with his Obscure Lore...."
"I don't believe there's a team of that name in this Bloodgames--"
"No, not here. Earlier, in Veastian. He could have been, hmm, preparing for
this, opening contacts if not gates, stuff like that. Has anybody seen any Dark
Toads around?"
"Not until they've had six drinks with umbrellas in them. Tell me, sir, have
you given any thought to the moral implications of the Bloodgames?"
"What moral implications?" the manager asked. "This isn't about morals, it's
about survival. And the way to survive on the sands is to kill your opponents every
chance you get!"
     "Yes, but--"
"There's a reason they don't hold these contests up in Andoria," the manager
said sternly. "Good people in their ways, the Andorians, but they just aren't cut
out for this kind of grim business." He paused to listen to the roar of the crowds
jamming the ancient arena. Checked the marquee where slaves dangled from ropes and
updated the records of participants. Nodded, grimly satisfied. "Another death.
That's good--can't have too many survivors, or it cheapens the victory at the end."
     "But the death toll--"
"Bah! Don't get the idea that these gladiators are the flower of Alastarian
youth. The ones who enter the Bloodgames are the men with no hope. We offer them a
future they could never have dreamed of, but they have to work for it, sweat for it,
bleed for it, and sometimes die for it. The survivors..." he bared his teeth in a
grin that would not have looked out of place on a wolf, "they owe us EVERYTHING, and
they'll do anything to repay us."
     "But--"
"And besides," Zalgor Prigg went on, "if you really want to take up the moral
question, go talk to the Grey Wand. She's the one set this up, after all."
"I don't see the point, frankly. She's got plenty of Lord Protectors, and they
have longer training, skills polished and honed to a--"
"The Bloodgames victors, they're Her enforcers," Prigg said. "No polish, sure,
but when a dirty job needs doing, one of these guys will do it, and no questions
asked."

       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here once again, with more interviews from the tourney. This time I'm
talking to a new manager, so new he doesn't even have a manager name. "Sir... what
would you like me to call you, by the way?"
"Why do you have to call me anything? I don't understand why you want to
interview me. There are lots of great managers here who could probably tell you
stuff--"
"I'm looking for a new perspective, the point of view of someone who is just
starting out with the gladiatorial games."
"Oh. Well, I guess that would be me."
"Absolutely right! Tell me, what do you think of the tourney? This is your
first, right?"
"Right, my first," the young man agreed. "And it's GREAT! Everyone is just
great here! I mean, most of these managers, they're, like, legends, you know?
Everybody's heard of them, and they have stables of HUNDREDS of gladiators, and
they've been polishing their tricks for YEARS, and I didn't figure I had much of a
chance, you know?"
"The popular view is that no matter how much you know, the arena can always
throw a surprise at you--"
"Yeah, yeah, I've heard that. I don't know if I believe it, but I've heard it.
But that isn't the best thing about this tourney. The best thing is that everyone
here has been GREAT. Or else I didn't meet them--the ones that might not have been.
But I think I met just about everyone, and--"
"And they were great. I'm glad. But perhaps you could tell our readers a
little more, maybe tell them how these experienced managers were great to you?"
"Well, yeah, okay. It's that everyone was so friendly and helpful, see? The
ENTIRE Consortium talked to me about warrior design, for instance. I learned a lot
there. And, well, there was Mannequin, and The Greek Guy, and I actually met
Manager, too! And they were all really helpful. Advice, you know, and charts, and
all that stuff that was so confusing. It was just the best experience! I'm going to
do it again, for sure!"

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Here we are, everyone back from the tourney, and... no one is issuing tourney-
victor challenges. What's up with that? I know the reports haven't come out yet--
even I haven't seen 'em, but surely some gladiators fighting in Andorak have a
tourney-victor challenge they could use?
But on more specific matters: Bradack had the largest point gain, 30 points.
Van Helsing, defeated by Bradack, had the largest loss at 23 points. Some days I
wonder where those seven extra points came from, but it happens all the time.
Celestial Knights were Most Avoided by Kellumbo's Kids.
Doesn't look like we had a Most Challenged today, which could just mean a couple
of ties--there WERE challenges. Eight of 'em, even though none were TV.
A total of twenty-three fights, with three standbys on the sands. Eat your
heart out, Debby Tonte!

A quick run-down, or run-through, as the case might be:
     GLITCH (46-2798) (17-18-1,65) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought OHRLAM (105-2) (0-0-0,60)
of Assorted Standbys. GLITCH viciously subdued OHRLAM in an exciting 1 minute gory
bout. Good going, Glitch, smack that Ohrlam around. He's been asking for it.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (65-81-2,143) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought BRADACK (82-
46007) (17-7-0,96) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS 50. VAN HELSING was luckily beaten by BRADACK
in an action packed 3 minute gruesome fray. Biggest point movement, and no wonder
when you look at the records these two brought into the fight.
     INDIA (81-391) (37-26-0,102) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought GOLDERIE (26-4657) (43-
49-1,150) of GOLDEN CANYON. INDIA was savagely defeated by GOLDERIE in an action
packed 3 minute brutal fight. This has been coming on for a while.
SMOKE (68-5868) (19-6-0,151) of ZOMBIE SQUAD II II fought TESSHIAN (105-22) (0-
0-0,181) of Assorted Standbys. SMOKE was savagely defeated by TESSHIAN in a crowd
pleasing 4 minute bloody conflict. Ah... drat. We don't like it when the standbys
win, it gives them ideas.
     MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! (60-8618) (25-8-1,162) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1601 fought CLEMMIE
(26-4630) (37-66-1,139) of GOLDEN CANYON. MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! demolished CLEMMIE in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided bout. It happens. A lot, as you can see by their
records.

BIKINI LINE (25-4545) (25-27-0,163) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought DOMINION (22-5043)
(23-23-0,155) of ZOMBIE SQUAD III. BIKINI LINE was devastated by DOMINION in a 1
minute one-sided fight. The season is against Bikini, but wait till summer!
SHERRI (82-15114) (36-25-1,210) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3201 fought BLACKRAZOR (11-
4091) (83-162-2,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. SHERRI vanquished BLACKRAZOR in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute bloody one-sided fray. Good, keep those fossils humble. Hmm,
actually, it might be better if you didn't. We'd like to see them Inducted.
NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (86-97-1,192) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought SARINA (26-
4220) (42-55-1,180) of GOLDEN CANYON. NIXIE SEASPRITE defeated SARINA in a 1 minute
struggle. She still won't make you sushi, Nix.
WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE (82-3317) (34-18-1,184) of SUPERIOR FATHER fought TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (94-137-0,204) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE handily
defeated TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD in a 1 minute conflict. Does this mean the Evil Empire
is winning, too?
MANDRAKE (68-3259) (44-37-1,196) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought MASKED GUILDMASTER
(105-6) (0-0-0,201) of Assorted Standbys. MANDRAKE was demolished by MASKED
GUILDMASTER in a 1 minute one-sided brawl. Who was that masked man?

     HUMMEL (14-1404) (115-164-7,209) of MIKES fought WARDUKE (11-5930) (74-91-3,151)
of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. HUMMEL overcame WARDUKE in an exciting 1 minute contest.
Mostly the excitement rose from the sudden snow shower that started at the same time
the fight did. People couldn't see what was happening.
DALLAS (18-6860) (62-46-0,188) of SUPERIOR FORCES 6N fought KALLORE (14-3061)
(30-12-1,198) of CHECKMATE. DALLAS demolished KALLORE in a 1 minute mismatched
match. Does this mean Dallas doesn't play chess, or Dallas plays chess better?
FINALITY (82-4063) (44-23-1,241) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P fought CONNOR MACLEOD
(11-5532) (83-100-2,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. FINALITY handily defeated CONNOR
MACLEOD in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Dare I say: Finally!
     GOKU (46-3655) (114-91-2,217) of DRAGONBALL Z fought MALICE (46-2336) (49-26-
1,208) of SERPENT'S HOLD. GOKU was defeated by MALICE in an exciting 1 minute fight.
A little ego-boost for Malice, and why not, eh?
THE PINK RANGER (68-9166) (60-41-1,226) of SUPERIOR FORCES X fought WOLVERINE
(66-3871) (87-138-7,187) of X-FORCE. THE PINK RANGER overpowered WOLVERINE in a 1
minute uneven duel. Good. Wolverin has an attitude problem, and being smacked
around might help. Or not, of course.

The challenges:
     BINKLY (46-4115) (22-17-0,85) of DEATHTONGUE challenged KETTELMAN (26-4749) (24-
27-1,88) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up 3. BINKLY vanquished KETTELMAN in an action packed 1
minute uneven Challenge duel. Binkly may be new here, or nearly new (I forget), but
it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who to challenge.
     JEROME (22-6675) (21-6-0,57) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SOLARIS (46-3759)
(40-121-0,76) of RUBY DRAGONS. Up 19. JEROME bested SOLARIS in a popular 3 minute
gruesome Challenge competition. I don't think we're looking at Solaris to be
Inducted any time soon.
SEREPHIM (22-6713) (24-1-1,143) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LORIS KEY (26-
4706) (34-53-2,122) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 21. SEREPHIM was vanquished by LORIS KEY
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Loris will probably crow about it, and I
suppose you can't blame her.
TRYPTOPHAN (71-5634) (22-13-0,171) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC challenged SPAWN (14-
2724) (49-39-1,187) of CHECKMATE. Up 16. TRYPTOPHAN was subdued by SPAWN in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute Challenge competition. Guess Tryp didn't notice the Rook lying in
wait.
     DARNESHA (82-42015) (36-18-1,196) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 challenged HEMLOCK
(68-2193) (45-38-2,230) of CELESTIAL KNIGHTS. Up 34. DARNESHA bested HEMLOCK in a
popular 2 minute Challenge fight. Why do I feel I haven't seen these Celestial
Knights around recently? Glad they're here. Every little bit helps.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (73-39-3,205) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (71-85-1,193) of RUBY DRAGONS. Down 12. GRANDPA RAT defeated
KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge duel. Not really a
surprise outcome.
NIGHTBANE (81-377) (44-19-0,216) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN LAMORAK
(11-4841) (80-118-1,202) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 14. NIGHTBANE luckily beat
LUKARIAN LAMORAK in an exciting 2 minute Challenge melee. Luck? Better work on
changing that to skill, Nightbane.

For the title, our King's Sentinel didn't wait around for chance or enemies:
     VISION (26-1573) (141-55-4,267) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SANDS (11-4123)
(80-163-3,215) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 52. VISION devastated SANDS in an action
packed 2 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. Sands may or may not be leaving
soon, but I look for Vision to go at the next Split. Congratulations on the win,
