Fratsfa:
"So," Lenpro said, "we have two basic--linked but distinct--problems. The
chaotic magic, and the civil war. Is that correct?"
Lady Fern nodded. "Over-simplified, but correct."
"And Fandil is going to have to be the one to deal with the magic--"
"I have heard of the mage Fandil, of course," Herlas cut in, "and I would guess
he has as good a chance as any and better than most, but... will he do it? Will he
do it in TIME?"
"He's working on it now," Fern said.
The younger man blinked and looked around the room blankly. "Already? But how
did he know?"
Fern laughed. "That is a question I prefer not to ask my brother, along with
'what are you doing?'. It is sufficient to know that he is working on it." She sat
even straighter in her chair. "Your obvious intention, Lenpro, is to state that we
here in this room must begin to deal with the civil war side of the problem."
"Preferably before it becomes an outright civil war," the manager from Iaye
said. "At the moment, it's more of a palace coup. If we can stop it now--"
"Ah..." Herlas shifted a little in his chair, "that may not be possible.
Cutting it off before it becomes an outright civil war. The tensions and irritations
that Korneth has been working with are real enough, and by now they're probably--
almost certainly--inflamed enough that bringing them to a halt short of violence
is.... I don't think it can be done."
"Just what, exactly, 'tensions and irritations' are you talking about?" Lenpro
scowled. "The Andorian League is probably the best place to live in all Alastari--"
Herlas sighed, looked at Outcast Orchid almost helplessly for a moment, then
squared his shoulders. Definitely a 'you aren't going to like this' gesture.
"Korneth may have come out of nowhere I've ever heard of, but he gained local support
quickly. Very quickly--and more than you might think, especially in Convincia. The
Great Thane has been... cool, but he hasn't made any effort to stop the drift of many
of his lesser thanes into the..." a vague gesture, of one groping for words, "the
isolationist camp, I might call it. And at a lower level still, among the ordinary
people, farmers, small merchants, the foundation of Convincian strength, there's a
lot of resentment against, well, the Aruaki first. They don't like how powerful the
Aruaki are in the League. They don't like Aruaki wanting to marry their sons and
daughters and 'taint' their own family bloodlines. They just--"
"They don't like the Aruaki," Fern finished. She looked thoughtful and glanced
at Lenpro. "What has been your experience on Iaye? It is officially under the
government of the Aruaki Clanhold, is it not?"
"Officially... sort of." Lenpro got up and started walking around the room,
finding an outlet for his own irritation in the activity. With obvious reluctance,
he said, "We don't see many of the Aruaki on Iaye, and if some official were to come
and try to give orders... they probably wouldn't be well received. But that's a long
way from civil war!"
"It's the soil that a civil war can grow in," Fern said. "The werefolk are not
welcomed with open arms here in Fratsfa, either, especially since the plague. Some
of the plague-driven shape-changes and the associated personality shifts were," she
sighed, "frankly disastrous. But it isn't the fault of the Aruaki themselves!"
"It doesn't need to be," Sizzling Sunflower cut in. "It isn't the fault of the
river if someone's house gets flooded, but no intelligent person builds too close to
it even so."
"Yes, exactly so." Herlas nodded. "Even people who aren't hostile to the
Aruaki have taken to avoiding them--"
"We don't see it in the arenas," Lenpro said.
"Yes, well, they're avoiding the gladiators, too, I bet," Orchid said. "Nobody
was giving gladiators the benefit of the doubt up in Andor just recently."
"There's also hostility toward gladiators," Herlas admitted. "Many people see
them as tools of the Grey Wand, which they fear outright. And, again, they resent
the effect of the arenas on their sons and daughters. That it draws them away from
what their parents consider the proper life and duties--"
"Immortality--"
"A lot of jealousy, huh?" Orchid asked.
Herlas nodded again. "A lot of people have trouble accepting the typical elvish
lifespan, but at least elves can be killed. Add in the guarantee of resurrection...
jealousy, resentment, even religious outrage. There was a lot of dissatisfaction
that Korneth could strike a match to."
"It's all well and good to SAY these things," Orchid growled, taking her turn to
stamp up and down the room. "But what can we DO about them? The Aruaki aren't going
to go away. The arenas aren't going to go away. The elves, and the Grey Wand,
aren't going to go away. All this stuff you're SAYING isn't telling us what we can
DO."
Herlas smiled, though there was little amusement in the expression. "Korneth's
solution is to kill or 'cast out' the Aruaki--send them back to Ratan, apparently.
Get rid of the arena system, kill Lord Protectors whenever they turn up and destroy
the bodies so that they can't be resurrected, and direct the energies of the
remaining Andorians toward a war with the Karnhorn Empire."
"Scapegoats," Lady Fern said. Her expression suggested that if she wasn't a
lady, she'd spit on the floor.
"Cut off Korneth's legitimacy by providing a ruler that all can accept as--"
"But can 'all' accept Alonj?" Orchid asked.
"As an alternative to a civil war, yes, I think so. If we get the message on
that out before emotions become so inflamed that nobody wants a reasonable
alternative to civil war. But these irritations... they won't go away, because they
do have a real foundation," Lenpro nodded acknowledgement at the Zensovian mage, "but
they've become exaggerated. Inflamed," he repeated, liking the word.
"So we need anti-inflammatories." Fern nodded. "It won't be easy, but--"
"Maybe if the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors help out people, all kinds of
people--the ordinary ones you were talking about," Sunflower began.
"No." Fern and Lenpro spoke together, and immediately. Lenpro gestured for his
sister to continue. "If we add the burden of gratitude to the resentments already
festering, it will make things worse. No, better if we find some way for the
ordinary mortal human Andorians to help out the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors, that
might do better."
Sizzling Sunflower looked dubious, but she shrugged and sat back, accepting her
manager's perception as being wiser than her own. "How, then?"

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Another day, another seven inches of snow, and a spy report. What's wrong with
this picture? Well, by and large, it isn't wrong here. You're all a bunch of mimes,
but you show up, and I can live with that.
We had twenty-three fights, which isn't bad, and only two standbys involved,
which is good. Very good.
Only five challenges, which is bad, but two of them were TV challenges, and
that's good. Very good.
Blackrazor got the biggest point gain today, twenty-three of 'em.
Bikini Like had the biggest drop, possibly due to the aforesaid seven inches of
snow. Not bikini weather. The drop was only eighteen points, could have been worse.
Deathtongue was most avoided, and Kellumbo's Kids avoided them most. Always one
to make use of the full range of a manager's tools, Kellumbo.
Smoke of Zombie Squad II II got the most challenges, and the golem that checks
over this spy report would have a fit over that "II II" bit. So I'm not going to
check it. You can take the spy report however it comes.
FANG (68-2019) (24-12-0,74) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought OHRLAM (105-2) (0-0-0,60)
of Assorted Random Bods. FANG viciously subdued OHRLAM in a popular 2 minute
gruesome match. The first of two standbys loses. Good work, Fang.
GLITCH (46-2798) (19-18-1,85) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought SOLARIS (46-3759) (40-
123-0,56) of RUBY DRAGONS. GLITCH savagely defeated SOLARIS in a popular 3 minute
gory match. Possibly Glitch was energized by that dinner at Golden Canyon?
KETTELMAN (26-4749) (24-29-1,64) of GOLDEN CANYON fought JEROME (22-6675) (22-7-
0,73) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. KETTELMAN was handily defeated by JEROME in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute uneven duel. Will Kettelman cook for Jerome? Probably not. Or
maybe burned beans if he does.
INDIA (81-391) (38-27-0,144) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought LAWRENCE THE SOT (105-10)
(0-0-0,150) of Assorted Random Bods. INDIA viciously subdued LAWRENCE THE SOT in a 3
minute gory match. And the second standby loses. Excellent. We don't want them
getting uppity.
MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! (60-8618) (27-8-1,176) of SUPERIOR FORCES 1601 fought CLEMMIE
(26-4630) (37-68-1,127) of GOLDEN CANYON. MGRWONTHE1STTOGS! devastated CLEMMIE in a
1 minute one-sided bout. I believe Clemmie has already gone on record as totally
unwilling to cook scrod or, in fact, any kind of fish.
GOLDERIE (26-4657) (44-50-1,162) of GOLDEN CANYON fought SMOKE (68-5868) (19-8-
0,132) of ZOMBIE SQUAD II II. GOLDERIE was luckily beaten by SMOKE in a crowd
pleasing 5 minute bloody fight. And this is "Most Challenged" Smoke? What the heck,
eh?
BIKINI LINE (25-4545) (26-28-0,163) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought BRADACK (82-46007)
(19-7-0,130) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS 50. BIKINI LINE was narrowly defeated by BRADACK in
a 2 minute bout. You notice how quickly the orderlies rushed out to check Bikini for
chillblains?
WARDUKE (11-5930) (74-93-3,155) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought BINKLY (46-4115)
(24-17-0,111) of DEATHTONGUE. WARDUKE defeated BINKLY in an exciting 1 minute bout.
This probably falls under the heading of "dues."
WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE (82-3317) (35-19-1,187) of SUPERIOR FATHER fought BLACKRAZOR
(11-4091) (83-164-2,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. WORKS 4 EVIL EMPIRE was overpowered by
BLACKRAZOR in a 1 minute mismatched brawl. Obviously, whoever awarded those points
was against the Evil Empire and its Minions.
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (95-138-0,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought
TRYPTOPHAN (71-5634) (22-15-0,171) of SUPERIOR FORCES ZC. TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD was
vanquished by TRYPTOPHAN in a 1 minute mismatched bout. Are you surprised? It's
clearly stated here that Tryptophan is a superior force.
MANDRAKE (68-3259) (44-39-1,193) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought SANDS (11-4123) (80-
165-3,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. MANDRAKE overcame SANDS in a 2 minute fight. The
burning question is, after Mandrake beat Sands on the sands, did he try to bury Sands
in the sands?
WOLVERINE (66-3871) (88-139-7,194) of X-FORCE fought SPAWN (14-2724) (51-39-
1,198) of CHECKMATE. WOLVERINE was devastated by SPAWN in a 2 minute mismatched
bout. Bit of a trick there, and a congratulation is doubtless due to Spawn.
CONNOR MACLEOD (11-5532) (83-102-2,189) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought LORIS KEY
(26-4706) (35-54-2,154) of GOLDEN CANYON. CONNOR MACLEOD handily defeated LORIS KEY
in an exciting 1 minute one-sided contest. Please, somebody, let this pie-chef win
before she forgets entirely how to make a pie!
MALICE (46-2336) (50-27-1,202) of SERPENT'S HOLD fought SARINA (26-4220) (42-57-
1,170) of GOLDEN CANYON. MALICE overpowered SARINA in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-
sided match. Crowd pleasing, but not surprising. Records reveal a lot.
DALLAS (18-6860) (64-46-0,221) of SUPERIOR FORCES 6N fought DOMINION (22-5043)
(25-23-0,183) of ZOMBIE SQUAD III. DALLAS overpowered DOMINION in a 1 minute one-
sided melee. So, does Zombie Squad III come before or after Zombie Squad II II?
Tricky.
FINALITY (82-4063) (46-23-1,281) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P fought KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN
(46-3809) (71-87-1,190) of RUBY DRAGONS. FINALITY vanquished KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN in a
1 minute one-sided fight. But probably not finally.
DARNESHA (82-42015) (38-18-1,221) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 fought THE PINK RANGER
(68-9166) (62-41-1,241) of SUPERIOR FORCES X. DARNESHA was vanquished by THE PINK
RANGER in a popular 1 minute gruesome uneven duel. Pink is a very dominating color.
The challenges:
SEREPHIM (22-6713) (25-2-1,141) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged VAN HELSING (11-
6338) (65-83-2,123) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. Down 18. SEREPHIM overpowered VAN
HELSING in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Even the bookies weren't betting
against Serephim.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (74-40-3,197) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KALLORE (14-
3061) (31-13-1,189) of CHECKMATE. Down 8. GRANDPA RAT luckily beat KALLORE in a
crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge competition. To whichever fan threw the rotten
squash, which Kallore tripped over, into the arena at the beginning of third minute,
fair warning! Carlos the Bookie is annoyed, and he's got his legbreakers searching
for anyone with squash seeds on their hands.
NIGHTBANE (81-377) (46-19-0,228) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN LAMORAK
(11-4841) (80-120-1,205) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 23. NIGHTBANE bested LUKARIAN
LAMORAK in a popular 3 minute Challenge fight. Well, I have to admit that it isn't
likely anyone will get bent out of shape over downchallenges against the Scarlet
Knights. Not from malice against those same knights, but more in the line of "better
them than us."
The TV challenges, and congratulations to the gladiators having and using them:
DUMPWEED (82-13924) (29-3-0,205) of SUPERIOR FORCES B105 TV challenged NIXIE
SEASPRITE (11-4992) (88-97-1,216) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 11. DUMPWEED handily
defeated NIXIE SEASPRITE in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge match. There's a note
here about the hazards of waterweed to swimmers, but it doesn't seem relevant, so I'm
skipping it.
SHERRI (82-15114) (37-26-1,210) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3201 TV challenged HUMMEL
(14-1404) (117-164-7,222) of MIKES. Up 12. SHERRI devastated HUMMEL in an action
packed 2 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Somebody--his manager, for instance--
should retire Hummel.
For the title, a random match:
VISION (26-1573) (143-55-4,294) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought GOKU (46-3655) (115-
92-2,222) of DRAGONBALL Z. VISION slimly won victory over GOKU in an action packed 7
minute gruesome Title fight. Better hit the practice floor, Vision, you should win
by a larger margin--and faster--than that. But congratulations anyway, because you
DID win.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Serephim -- Shouldn't you be "SerepHER"? -- Clemmie
P.S. But I'm still not going to make you angel-food cake. I detest it.
Kalore -- It isn't my specialty, that'd be Spitzin, who hasn't graduated yet, but I
can probably manage to make chessmen cookies. At least I'm willing to try it. But
be warned, they'll be FULL of "kalores." -- Golderie
P.S. After all, they have to be made with plenty of real butter to be any good.
Wolverine -- Oh, you. It's a real annoyance to cook for you, I could serve you any
kind of near-garbage and you'd bolt it down. -- Sarina
Talisman Shieldguard -- MINCE pie? Are you NUTS? I don't do meat pies. For that
you want... hmm, Clemmie or Golderie might do it. If you ask them nicely. I don't
do MEAT pies. -- Loris Key
P.S. I'm thinking... cranberry pie.
Glitch -- For so generous a young lady, I will make... the most exquisite venison
stew, with biscuits, I think. Sarina can do a salad, and Loris will bring a pie. We
always welcome discerning eaters at the Golden Canyon. -- Kettelman
9 February 10
All -- I know you all thought the old Wiz that is Fiz went off to die somewhere.
Well, I didn't. Now I'm back to befuddle and frustrate you with my senseless
ramblings. I look forward to reconnecting with all my old friends and enemies alike.
