The Isle of the Eye:
They didn't get to see Sheila Greywand, which was a surprise. Some sort of
secretary told them that she was "very busy." They should take their trophy, which
might or might not be the Eye of the South, to the Stronghold Academy and turn it
over to Senior Wizard Tanrith. Then he shut the door in their faces.
"You would think," Mr. Testosterone muttered angrily, "that after sending us--
personally sending us, at that--on a special mission of 'surpassing importance',
she'd want to at least hear our report in person and ask us some questions."
"One might think that," Bellerophon agreed. "I suppose she might be occupied
with more pressing matters," he went on slowly, staring at the shut door.
"We were given to understand that there WERE no more pressing matters than
finding out what happened to the Eyes," Tamea Soulkeeper growled. "But not only are
we turned away at her door, we could barely get onto the Isle at all!"
"That might be one of the more pressing matters," Skirnir suggested.
"Ha! I know when I've been insulted." Tamea glared at the door. "It would
serve her right if we didn't take the Eye to the Academy."
"No, WE should do things properly, even if SHE is too busy," E.A. Polecat cut
in. "Besides, what would we do with the thing?" He looked at the towel-wrapped
bundle uneasily.
"And even if we, you know, get away with it now," Debby Tonte predicted, "SHE
will notice later on, and then we'll be in trouble. SHE always notices sooner or
later."
"What's the point in arguing?" Onuphre asked. "We're going to take it to the
Stronghold Academy, to this Senior Wizard, so let's just do it. I want to go back to
my guildhouse, take a hot bath, get a good meal, and a night's sleep in a real bed
for a change." He glanced sideways at Debby. "Not that the Rithakar Hilton wasn't
okay, but I want my own bed."
"I agree," Natasha Knight said from the back of the group. "Let's just get rid
of the thing and be done with all this. Where is the Stronghold Academy from here?"
She moved to the outer door and peered into the fog uncertainly.
Debby tugged her beach jacket more securely around her well-tanned figure and
stepped out into the fog. "It's right down there." She gestured at nothing visible
to the others.
The gladiators glanced at each other. Bellerophon shrugged. "She always lands
on her feet," he murmured. "She probably does know where the Academy is, and we want
to get rid of this. Let's go."
They went.
Ten minutes brisk walk brought them to a stout brick wall topped with iron
spikes. The porter at the heavy gate, a pale, weedy specimen who looked more like a
student of magic than any kind of guard, let them in without argument, and directed
them to Tanrith's workroom.
Tanrith looked old, as befitted a senior wizard. He also looked tired, but that
was not their problem. He took the towel-wrapped stone from them, set it on a bare
table, and unwrapped it. The stone was a sphere a little bigger than a man's head,
chalky white, smooth but dull of surface, and faint shadows cast by nothing visible
moved just under its skin.
The wizard sighed. "This was, indeed, one of the Eyes," he said. "It's beyond
recovery now, poor thing. Best to put it out of its misery...."
"You make it sound like something alive," E.A. Polecat muttered.
"It is. Or it was. The records state plainly that when Lady Greywand created
the Eyes, each was built around the soul, spirit, or whatever you want to call it, of
a living person. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did."
"Why?" Tamea Soulkeeper leaned forward intently. "Why should they not survive
for even longer when preserved by spells?"
"Nothing but the vast mind of a Great Dragon lasts without decay for more than a
few hundred years in nature. Spells may extend that period to as much as a thousand
years, but beyond that point...no." The old man sighed. "Oh, to be sure, you can
keep it GOING with spells, but it changes. Memory frays away, personality twists
into new channels, and the resilience of the healthy mind is lost. The mind may
retain function, indeed, it may be quite powerful, but it isn't sane by any measure."
Nobody said anything. Bellerophon didn't look at the other gladiators, but in
his mind was the awareness that Sheila Greywand was considerably more than a thousand
years old. Was this man saying SHE was insane? Impossible...or was it?
"That's two of the Eyes recovered," Tanrith went on. "The East and the South.
Good work."
"And luck," Bellerophon said. "Luck, and help when we needed it."
"If the Eyes are useless now," Tamea asked, "what happens to the Arcanum and
magic?"
"Nobody knows for sure," the old wizard said. "Disruption of normal life, at
the least. Beyond that, we must wait and see."

Somewhere in the Far West:
"She's sick!" The voice was male, unfamiliar, annoyed. The language was
unfamiliar, too, but Shania understood it. Part of her gift for knowing, she
supposed. The gift had declined of late, as a part of the decay of the Arcanum; that
it had come back in part was doubtless significant...of something. She didn't want
to think about it right now. "A sick woman is no use to us!"
Shania kept her eyes closed, stayed relaxed. The man was talking about her, but
she felt no need to discuss her health with a stranger.
"She's sick because she is closely linked with the Arcanum, and the Arcanum is
sick." A different voice, probably male, but older, tireder. "She is less useful
than she would have been a month ago, but there is no value in lamenting what has
passed. And no one else would be of any use at all."
The first voice muttered what was apparently a curse. Footsteps departed.
"I know you are awake," the tired voice said, "and that you can understand me.
You may as well admit it."
Shania opened her eyes. The man looked to be of medium height and might once
have been physically powerful, but all that was left now was broad bone structure and
withered hide. He didn't appear to be of any race known to her, being bronze-skinned
with a brutal beak of a nose, high cheekbones, narrow black eyes, and iron-gray hair.
His mouth was narrow, almost lipless. The dominant characteristics in his face were
a fierce intelligence and an implacable will. He would make a bad enemy.
"What do you want of me?" she asked idly. She thought it unlikely that she
would help this man in anything, but no harm in asking.
"Your aid in healing the Pillar of the West." A gesture indicated something
just out of her line of sight.
She shifted, noting that she was on a narrow pallet rather than a real bed, far
enough to look in that direction. A massive dark stone had been carved into the
likeness of a man squatting and holding his hands cupped against his chest. Held in
the hands was a sphere of crystal, dull gray in color except as flashes of livid
reddish light shivered across it. The Eye of the West, and barely functional.
"I have little power at present," she said. "What can I do that you cannot?"
"Your power is of no value," the man answered flatly. "The stone is dying
because the spirit that inhabits and animates it is dying. As you are the person
mostly closely attuned to it at this time, you are the obvious one to replace the
dying spirit. By the gods' favor, you may survive long enough for us to find and
attune a younger, stronger woman to assume the burden."
Shania had not expected to be so surprised, but that this old man proposed to
sacrifice her to the stone in order to preserve its function for a few days or weeks
longer came as a shock. "Does my position on this make any difference?"
"No."
"Not even if I know of other ways to stabilize the stone? Non-fatal ways?"
"There are no other ways. If you will not accept your role as the honor it is,
you will accept it anyway. The time for choice is long past."

Talahya?
"I'm not sure that would be a good idea," Fizban said cautiously. "We don't
know where we are, but we DO know that the Gate we came through must be near here.
If we go farther away, we could lose track of our route home."
Moonjumper patted his hand. "It's okay, we're as lost as we'll ever be
already!"
"What wonderful news." The old wizard sighed.
"Besides, we're Lord Protectors," Scarlatti pointed out, straightening up from
his examination of the water. "Part of our DUTY is to explore new realms."
"And our pleasure, as well," Carris Fallstar agreed. "Let's see if there is a
boat, a ferry or some other boat. I feel like sailing!"
Fizban looked from one to another of his companions, shook his head slightly,
and sighed. Maybe it was a sign of his age, but he really didn't like the idea of
getting completely lost. At least here, there was the illusion that by retracing
their steps, they could find the Gate they'd come through and return to the Isle.
Rodan leaned closer to him. "It will be okay," the blind gladiator murmured.
"I can retrace a long route as easily as a short one. And it is better to do
something, even something wrong, than to do nothing."
Lirin Kiv?
The carriage moved through the streets slowly, as though the driver was feeling
his way in the fog. The fog wasn't heavy enough to justify that kind of groping
progress, but Shylock kept quiet. No point in berating the driver. Besides, the
Lord Protector was also making full use of the chance to stare around. So was
Clemenda, he noted, well, that was okay. He didn't normally like people around him
to be TOO alert, but in this peculiar situation, no telling what might be significant
and who might notice it first.
The temple to Somebody Who Wasn't Mantor vanished behind them. Shylock counted
turns and blocks and finally set his teeth against possible disaster and looked
toward where the arena should have been. Hmm. Not the same structure, but there
were points of similarity.
It might be an arena.
Sorry to be so brief, but time and heat is pressing. More to come, if it rains. --

Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
Try and give Canadian Mist a shot at the throne, and someone goes scurrying away.
Won't be happening again any time in the near future. This turn, I will go for the
style mismatch, and challenge Aulic. This is one slippery dude. Regularly goes 6+
minutes against heavy armoured foes, but even when gasping and wheezing, pulls the
crit dodges out of Magician's top hat. Of course, my challenge, and the challenges
of the rest of Crip's Crap were not coordinated this time, so it is possible that
someone else may get Aulic, so Kalandra gets the back-up challenge.
Good luck to all in the Philly Phacer, Crip says I get to go try and improve on my 5-
3 showing from the last mailer, and Prince Apple will be joining me. Grolsch will be
trying his hand at the ADM tourney, along with Fighter Ace, King Foraday, Juninho and
Beervahna.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
"Welcome to your friendly neighborhood spy report"? Is this a friendly
neighborhood spy report? Alarond doubts that Crysalis will ever be the same. I
didn't realize. The same as what? Why? Or why not? "Was that the Duelmaster I saw
last night, cramped under the table at The Swinging Aardvark?" I don't know, was it?
And if so, what was he doing at the Aardvark, a low dive. Very low. "A green
quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling." Yes? But wouldn't it be prone
to splitting as it dries? And should we take the word of a basher in any case? I
mean, a basher, well, you know what they're like.
So many questions....
Andorian Knights were avoided by Royal Flush. Yet another unknown--why? Or as
Alarond says, "Anyone surprised?" Should we be? Kalandra got the most challenges.
Are challenges collectible? Is she onto a good thing here?
"We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close?" It? What it? "Is it really true that CRYSALIS has more
dishwashers per capita that fighters?" I certainly hope so! I like my dishes clean.
"Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe."
This is true, but it makes it unsuitable for formal wear.
We had thirty-seven fights, sixteen of them being challenge matches. Several
standbys fought, but I'm not going to count them today.
NORM PETERSON (39-2745) (38-64-0,43) of DRINKING BUDDIES fought WRITER'S (79-
1069) (26-52-1,50) of BLOCKS. NORM PETERSON was beaten by WRITER'S in a 2 minute
duel. Does this, perhaps, explain why Norm never does personals?
FEUDER (45-1305) (23-19-0,88) of WALKING DEATH fought FOGGY (72-4595) (9-1-2,58)
of DARQUE FORCES. FEUDER was handily defeated by FOGGY in a popular 1 minute uneven
match. I don't believe I've seen this Feuder around before. Welcome to Crysalis,
Feuder, and think nothing of losing your first fight. Many people do. They call it
"paying your dues."
DANNIA TYL SIO (52-3393) (28-17-1,87) of SAND DANCERS fought AB DESTINED 4 THE
DA (65-1154) (12-3-2,76) of PAUL'Z PHARTZ. DANNIA TYL SIO narrowly defeated AB
DESTINED 4 THE DA in an exciting 3 minute match. Did you know there's a village in
the Khriatrin's called Da? Is this Ab supposed to go there?
SUPERMUN (37-2138) (35-30-0,149) of ALL THE MUN'S MEN fought TYRE (31-3713) (26-
15-0,98) of DARQUE FORCES. SUPERMUN luckily beat TYRE in an exciting 9 minute
gruesome struggle. Nine minutes is rather long, but then, it wasn't ME standing out
there, so I guess I can't complain. I had shade and a cool drink, after all.
JUAN (41-2304) (20-13-0,119) of DREAM TEAMS fought DOLLFACE (39-2372) (53-72-
1,137) of DRINKING BUDDIES. JUAN vanquished DOLLFACE in an exciting 1 minute
mismatched fight. I don't know HOW many times Debby has told Dollface to cut back on
the drinking (or get umbrellas), but some people just don't listen.
SNOOKUMS (82-610) (31-32-0,141) of A UNIT XI fought DUNEDIN (14-3703) (26-29-
0,128) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. SNOOKUMS unbelievably bested DUNEDIN in a crowd
pleasing 4 minute match. Why should this one be hard to believe?
MOUNTEBANK (4-2083) (42-17-0,137) of CARNIVAL fought KYRA (51-3774) (39-35-
1,112) of SAND DANCERS. MOUNTEBANK was savagely defeated by KYRA in an exciting 3
minute gory bout. I don't need to comment on this one, do I? Both warriors are
likely to have plenty to say next time!
MONKEY BUSINESS (25-4040) (25-15-0,160) of PRIMATES-R-US fought CARLA (39-2428)
(57-65-1,125) of DRINKING BUDDIES. MONKEY BUSINESS overpowered CARLA in a popular 1
minute one-sided match. Carla's got the same problem as Dollface, of course. No
umbrellas in her drinks, and too many drinks. Not to run down Monkey's victory--a
worthy effort.
DISCO QUEEN (47-1992) (30-10-1,174) of ROYAL FLUSH fought TASHIA (11-2740) (24-
29-1,142) of DEADLY DE-PARTED. DISCO QUEEN was defeated by TASHIA in an action
packed 2 minute duel. Sometimes, flashing lights aren't enough.
OUR LADY PEACE (79-1191) (22-6-2,159) of CHAPEL ROCK fought EVIL INPUTTER (106-
7) (0-0-0,110) of Importunate Fans. OUR LADY PEACE vanquished EVIL INPUTTER in a 1
minute one-sided bout. Everyone cheered.
BUTCH (70-6657) (28-22-2,160) of A UNIT fought BALCLUTHA (14-3169) (23-27-1,136)
of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. BUTCH unBelievably Bested BALCLUTHA in a 2 minute Bloody Bout.
A battle of the Bs.
BEERVAHNA (60-4292) (28-28-3,200) of INGRATE WHITE NORTH fought TELGOR (106-27)
(0-0-0,200) of Importunate Fans. BEERVAHNA was vanquished by TELGOR in a 1 minute
one-sided fray. Rumor has it that Telgor has been taking part-time work, and
training, as a bookie's leg-breaker. So watch out for him!
JUNINHO (7-4001) (20-12-1,190) of IMPORTED FOOTBALLERS fought ALYSSA (82-656)
(30-29-0,179) of A UNIT XII. JUNINHO won victory over ALYSSA in a 2 minute bout. I
knew a Sweet Alyssa once. She was like a delicate white flower, and easily trampled
by a footballer, I'm sure.
LONALILTA (50-2806) (46-39-2,206) of DARK SIDHE fought SIR PLUS (10-4316) (26-
19-1,162) of SIR AGLIO. LONALILTA vanquished SIR PLUS in an exciting 1 minute one-
sided fight. Sir was excited, all right, by Lonalita....
FATHER OF ALL MUNS (20-2306) (28-37-1,199) of THE FAMILY TREE fought DAIRY QUEEN
(47-2685) (56-33-2,169) of ROYAL FLUSH. FATHER OF ALL MUNS savagely defeated DAIRY
QUEEN in a exciting 3 minute gory duel. Father knows best, after all.
TEN COMMANDMENTS (47-3843) (36-28-0,210) of ROYAL FLUSH fought CLOTTO (106-25)
(0-0-0,181) of Importunate Fans. TEN COMMANDMENTS was luckily beaten by CLOTTO in a
2 minute gory match. "Luckily" because...well, I won't tell you what Clotto was up
to, but it wasn't something that Ten would have approved of.
SITS ON HIS DUFF (73-1810) (34-17-3,194) of THINGS GEORGE DOES fought AMBER
WOLFWALKER (106-11) (0-0-0,220) of Importunate Fans. SITS ON HIS DUFF handily
defeated AMBER WOLFWALKER in a 2 minute uneven duel. But Amber was scheduled to walk
a wolf this afternoon, and who's going to do it now?
FIGHTER ACE (47-1189) (49-37-6,190) of ROYAL FLUSH fought TATTOO (25-947) (45-
43-1,195) of CARNIVAL. FIGHTER ACE was vanquished by TATTOO in a 1 minute one-sided
match. The worst of it, of course, was the hollering after the fight, when the
orderlies held Ace down while Tattoo applied some, er, "decoration."
TEMPUS (31-538) (31-24-0,204) of THE STORMGUARDS fought F.O.A.D. (73-442) (28-
11-2,199) of ALPHABET SOUP. TEMPUS was devastated by F.O.A.D. in a popular 1 minute
one-sided contest. "Fought On A Dare"?
AVAUNT (10-4170) (40-26-2,247) of A UNIT fought PRINCE APPLE (47-325) (94-69-
2,211) of ROYAL FLUSH. AVAUNT was savagely defeated by PRINCE APPLE in a popular 6
minute bloody match. At the end of six minutes in the sun, I would have been savage,
too.
GROLSCH (21-5029) (30-3-4,238) of REAL BEER fought SANDMAN (11-3923) (49-47-
2,185) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS. GROLSCH savagely defeated SANDMAN in an exciting 6
minute brutal bout. You see? More six-minute savagery.
Ah, the challenge matches--
URSULA (45-3713) (21-13-1,85) of DARQUE FORCES challenged SABRETOOTH (54-2269)
(19-9-2,86) of RUNNING AMOK. Up 1. URSULA devastated SABRETOOTH in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge brawl. Well, it looks like Sabertooth won't be lacking women's
couches to drape over. Just so long as they don't insist on skinning him first....
NIBENAY (71-3380) (20-17-1,54) of DARQUE FORCES challenged GABRIA HAND (39-3294)
(24-23-1,54) of THE MIDDLE WAY. Straight across. NIBENAY was overpowered by GABRIA
HAND in a 1 minute uneven Challenge struggle. She's on a roll! (Cinnamon with
raisons and vanilla frosting.)
MATADOR (11-4139) (33-31-2,46) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged 300 (78-2346) (15-
10-0,38) of PBA. Down 8. MATADOR viciously subdued 300 in a popular 2 minute
gruesome Challenge conflict. Is this the way to make a newcomer feel welcome?
ESPRESSO (47-4556) (15-7-1,64) of COFFEE RULES! challenged MIRTA (51-4033) (38-
25-1,89) of SAND DANCERS. Up 25. ESPRESSO demolished MIRTA in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge brawl. Too much caffeine too late at night....
HANNYA (73-4350) (21-4-1,143) of BLOOD LUST challenged AVONSIDE (13-3927) (29-
33-1,148) of KIWI CONNECTION. Up 5. HANNYA bested AVONSIDE in a 1 minute Challenge
battle. But the real question is, do you LIKE kiwi fruits? They're so...green.
BELGOROTH (50-3175) (25-25-0,117) of DARK SIDHE challenged JOYCE (25-4387) (23-
14-0,124) of HAREM. Up 7. BELGOROTH was savagely defeated by JOYCE in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute Challenge match. Numerologically, this is obvious. A warrior from
arena fifty is an obvious candidate to beat one from arena twenty-five. The bookies
gave him 2-1 odds.
STONEWALL (11-3900) (46-49-2,150) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged MAGICIAN (21-
1040) (45-37-0,171) of MEDICINE SHOW. Up 21. STONEWALL was overpowered by MAGICIAN
in a 3 minute gory one-sided Challenge melee. I always thought a magician was
supposed to use a magic box when sawing someone in half.
GERTRUDE (44-2582) (20-7-0,138) of DARQUE FORCES challenged SANDPAWN (11-4169)
(39-20-1,146) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS. Up 8. GERTRUDE viciously subdued SANDPAWN in a
popular 6 minute gory Challenge duel. Viciously and darquely.
SANDBLASTER (11-3899) (47-48-3,166) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged SIR LY (10-
4116) (36-25-0,167) of SIR AGLIO. Up 1. SANDBLASTER won victory over SIR LY in an
action packed 5 minute gory Challenge duel. Dare we wonder what Sir Ly was doing
last night to be so tired this morning?
FENGAR II (20-61) (100-69-1,210) of OVERLORDS challenged KITALA THE BOLD (78-
875) (77-97-2,210) of SAND DANCERS. Straight across. FENGAR II overcame KITALA THE
BOLD in an action packed 2 minute Challenge fight. Ah, well, no winning streak lasts
forever.
KING UVDAHELL (47-1643) (28-11-1,193) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SNOOPER (1-5154)
(28-17-3,196) of MIKE'S MISFITS. Up 3. KING UVDAHELL was overpowered by SNOOPER in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Rumor has it that Snooper learned the
necessary skills to beat King by spying on him! Snooper, this is an offense against
the Spies' Union.
KING FORADAY (47-3762) (37-36-4,200) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SCUM #1 (50-2743)
(43-47-0,204) of DARK SIDHE. Up 4. KING FORADAY savagely defeated SCUM #1 in a 6
minute Challenge competition. Ah, a King who won't be trifled with. Although I
rather like trifle, myself. In small servings, of course.
NEWT GINGRICH (5-3399) (67-23-0,205) of PARTY ANIMALS challenged ATONEMENT (82-
761) (38-25-0,239) of A UNIT XV. Up 34. NEWT GINGRICH was bested by ATONEMENT in a
popular 1 minute Challenge fight. Less partying, Newt!
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (79-56-2,217) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged AULIC (25-3944)
(33-25-0,229) of A UNIT. Up 12. JACK VALTRAEDS was savagely defeated by AULIC in a
7 minute Challenge fight. It would appear that seven was NOT a lucky number for
Jack.
SIDON (31-3712) (28-18-2,179) of DARQUE FORCES TV challenged CRUMBSNATCHER (72-
1842) (44-26-1,190) of ONE GOOD DUDE. Up 11. SIDON was devastated by CRUMBSNATCHER
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Congratulations to Sidon on having a TV
challenge, but is this the use it should be put to? Don't forget, you're on an
adventure, and authors are terribly impressionable.
KALANDRA (50-2443) (50-54-3,260) of DARK SIDHE challenged WILLIE MAKIT (73-514)
(98-36-2,405) of MISTAKEN IDENTITY. Up 145. KALANDRA was vanquished by WILLIE MAKIT
in a 1 minute uneven Challenge Title battle. A bold try, Kalandra, and better luck
next time. Good work, Willie.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
CFH -- Welcome to Crysalis. Now our V.C. presence here is growing. -- Abraxis
Master Darque -- Welcome back to Crysalis. -- Abraxis
Juan -- Nothing personal. -- Hannya
It probably FELT personal!
Mr. Coffee -- Welcome aboard, though I think you'll find the going a little tougher
than North Fork. -- Crip
Abby, Icelord, Carny -- Thanks for the words. I will continue to run all my Royal
Flush warriors until Primus induction, and the personal favourites here and there.
Note that personal favourites and good can be mutually exclusive terms. Using good
as a guideline, the likes of Beervahna, F.O.A.D, Sits On His Duff, and Juninho would
never get to fight in the Champions class here. On the other hand, Grolsch, Newt
Gingrich and Monkey Business are both favoured and good. -- Crip
Icelord -- I have the oddest of goals in Chimlevtal. Do not expect much from me
there. -- Crip
You mean, goals like "Have fun"?
Kitala-the-???-Far-Not-Inducted --- The ??? falls right where the 3-hole punch
pierces the newsletter, so I have no idea who you are this month. But you should
avoid the entry to Primus, not for an inability to win, but it becomes much tougher
to teach your opponents skills at that locale. But I have confidence that you could
still do it. -- Juninho
Father of all Muns -- All that strength, and you slept in and missed the duels. --
Jack Valtraeds
Fathers get to do that sometimes.
Mountebank -- Consider thyself challenged as soon as you are in my range. Always
seeking a courageous foe. -- Willie Makit
Stonewall -- Frogs Outlive Ancient Dinosaurs? -- F.O.A.D.
Avaunt, Atonement, Aulic -- Challenge all the units to get a title fight with
Canadian Mist, and low and beholds, the Foggy Canuck fails to show. -- Sits on His
Duff, F.O.A.D. and King Foraday
Kalandra -- You've improved since our last bout. -- Fighter Ace
That's the idea here, no? To improve steadily?
Snooper -- That was for all the Ripper marbles here. -- Jack Valtraeds
Scum #1 -- Finally maxed, only took 37 fights here in Crysalis to learn those last 3
skills. -- Newt Gingrich, looking to artificially inflate some stats now
Magician -- Do not attempt to saw the King in Half. Has trouble squirming around
under the box. -- King Uvdahell
Sir Plus -- It only took you 0 fights to learn your last skill. I am truly jealous.
-- Dairy Queen
0 fights?
Mountebank -- I thought you were #1 of your style. Deceiver Extraordinaire is not a
style. -- Our Lady Peace
Joyce -- It seems that Crip/Abby cannot win against each other when issuing a
challenge. -- Monkey Business
Kitala the Bold -- Let me tell you, I was behind on the scorecards of 4 of the 5
judges. Jorja the unbiased was the only dissenting opinion, but apparently, as wise
as ever. -- Willie Makit
Tempus -- Where have you been hiding? Can Utu be far behind? -- Grolsch
Fengar II -- Needless to say, I wasn't holding my breath with that match up. --
Juninho
Good! It's very hard to fight while holding your breath.
Thanato -- Next time, remember to swing back at the bible belters. -- Ten
Commandments
Sidon -- Not all bad records are complete pushovers, just most of us. -- Beervahna
Mountebank -- Since Sandpawn is so great, perhaps he'll win a few fights and rise
high enough in the ranks to challenge me. I'll be waiting. -- Avaunt, TP
extrodinaire
Willie -- Enjoy while you can. I'm coming to get you. -- Atonement
All -- Looking ahead to the winter FTF, is anyone going who would proxy a fighter or
two? -- Abby, A Unit Mgr.
Our Lady Peace -- Obviously, you've run up against some pretty mediocre strikers,
then. -- Sir Plus
Sir Plus -- Are there any other kinds? -- Sultan
Monkey Business -- Enjoyed your personal except for one thing: is it really that
much of a disgrace to lose to a pair of Sirs?? -- Sir Ly
Sir Ly -- Yeah! That's tellin' him! -- Sultan
Anyone -- Could someone tell me the qualifications to be inducted into Primus? -- Mr
Coffee
Really bad luck.
Livia -- Since when does 1-0 get 26th on the list, especially at 100%? I feel
insulted. What a welcome! -- Espresso
I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it seems to be something along the lines
of your team needing a certain number of fights or perhaps turns here before you
get mixed in with the regular ranking.
Norm Petterson -- 101 FE and I beat you? WOW! I am impressed. Thanks. COFFEE
RULES! -- Espresso
He was drunk, you know. He usually is.
Livia -- Hi back, spy reporter cutie. -- Mr Coffee
Er...hi.
The Men -- Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here. -- Mr Coffee
To All my Fellow FORKERS -- Way to represent this last turn. -- Mr Coffee
Sabretooth -- Hmm. (checking his fur) You might make a good throw for my couch....
-- Kyra
P.S. NOT a fur coat. I won't even insist on removing the skin from you before
draping it over my couch. You're welcome to drape yourself over my couch, but do NOT
expect me to share my iced tea. There are limits.
Dross -- I suppose I should be glad I didn't DIE again, but I would have liked to
win. Art was watching. -- Gabria Hand
Willie Makit -- A title match! I'm impressed. Back down in Basic, no one seemed to
have much faith in me. But I'm glad I lost that one (though I wouldn't have minded a
train); I don't have time for the duties of the Duelmaster or whatever we might call
you. Tower Guardian? -- Kitala the Bold and Busy
Carla -- Is this what I have to look forward to? Perhaps I should retire. Perhaps
YOU should retire, too. -- Mirta
Retire together and open a bar.
Nibenay -- I am pleased to discover that the forces of Darqueness are not invincible.
It's a comfort when one is slogging through the Slough of Despond and similar darque
regions. -- Dannia tyl Sio
I wonder if he's ever named a team "Thru a Glass Darquely"?
Juninho -- It was too hot. I didn't have the energy to imagine four skills. Be glad
you got one. -- Kitala the Not Happy With Her Air Condition or Lack Thereof
Mr. Coffee -- Then toss some wins their way, or they'll never graduate. -- Jorja
Matador -- Dutch beef? Oooo-kay. -- Kyra
What? -- Coffee Rules? Decaf I presume. -- Carny
There's no POINT in decaf coffee.
King Uvdahell -- And let that be a lesson. -- Magician
Our Lady Peace -- You leave me no cnoise. -- Mountebank, Top TP
Cnoise is rare and expensive. Of course she leaves none for you.
All -- Who desire a little coaching in the PR style are welcome to request my
attention. -- Tattoo
Tattoo -- Welcome! In your honor I will turn over my Top TP title to you. --
Mountebank, Top TP
Mountebank -- Not at all. I insist you hold it proudly. -- Tattoo, Carnival
Kyra -- I will now fight Bare-Knuckle. I am told I am gifted in open hand tactics.
No metal or wooden weapons or shields for me. My goal since I am ranked #3 as worst
warrior here I have decided since I lost six fights in a row I will now fist fight my
way to worst of all the worst. -- Matador (thinking perhaps it is better to rule in
Hell than serve in Heaven)
That's a good way to get sunburned knuckles.
Matador -- Whatever it takes to win. -- AK 47 (wishing Matador would save drama for
his mama)
Dollface -- I won? After 5 losses in a row I won one? Wow! Get the smelling salts,
I feel dizzy. -- Stonewall (still waiting to learn one last skill)
Mountebank -- It's me again. Should we dance? -- Sandpawn (just can't get enough)
Tashia -- Please note you are no longer top warrior here in Aruak City. -- Sandpawn
(pouring salt on wounds)
Gertrude -- Wear armor next time. You don't want to lose an eye, do you? --
Sandblaster (shortest fight ever he can recall)
Lonalilta -- That hurt! -- Sandman (kinda liked a woman in leather whipping him with
an epee)
Newt Gingrich -- You always take and never give. Damn politicians. -- Scum #1
Sandman/Fighter Ace -- What did you do to annoy the girls? Ace hope the healing
potion fixed all. -- Daehir
26 June 2003
STOP THINKING TOGS!!!!! It's here. Well, almost here anyway. We're looking at
a start date of the first turn in Aradi (DM 60) following the Fall Mail-In. This
should give everyone sufficient time to study the new ultra-improved T#%S IV rules
and prep accordingly. So without further ado, here is your handy-dandy guide to
winning your very own Golden Scrod (and some other very cool prizes to be announced
officially before the start of the tourney that must not be named):
1. Each T#%S team consists of two managers. After the tourney starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your partners wisely. T#%S IV will
last for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so. The only
team I know of so far is last TOGS winners: Ganolus Oakleaf/Hombre of Blood
Related/Thieves Guild. Hey, this is fun!
2. The T#%S entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per T#%S
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no
exceptions being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or
manager decides to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:
Andy Salveson
6812 Romanzo Way
Elk Grove, CA 95758
b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards and
no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. T#%S point system:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on another T#%S warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random matchup against another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning a random matchup against a non-T#%S warrior. Do not fight
your team mate, you will not get any points. Also, you will not get any points
if you challenge or get challenged by a non-T#%S team, so use your avoids
wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
10 points for being the Duelmaster. This is in addition to all points listed
above and will begin turn 1, so prep accordingly.
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member, 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the
newsletter (that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and I will be
completely firm on this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will
not be given points if they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not
Duelmasters or fantasy related. I will be the sole judge of this. If you're
unsure if I will judge something to be Duelmasters or fantasy related, then
e-mail me before you write the spotlight and ask me. I reserve the right to
take points away from a spotlight after they are given if I judge at a later
time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.
-5 points for being the team that avoided the most.
If you participated in TOGS III, you'll notice some slight changes in the points
structure. The main things are points for random match ups against non T#%S
warriors, bonus points for being the Duelmaster, new spotlight criteria, and no
points given for being the most avoided team.
4. I already mentioned this, but T#%S IV will start the first turn in arena 60 after
the Fall Mail-In runs and it will last for 13 turns. There will not be a
Survivor format this time around, meaning no eliminations. I will still be doing
the multipliers at the end, however. This means that all points accumulated by a
team on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by
each team on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Prizes are yet to be determined, but I'll tell you what I know. There will be
prizes given out each turn to whichever team scores the most combined points on a
given turn. Tie breakers will go to the team with the most wins on that turn and
then to the team with most overall points. I have asked RSI for the same prizes
as last TOGS which were transferring any warrior to arena 60 and renaming Aradi
for approximately 6 months, but we'll see what they come back with. I haven't
decided how to split the prizes up, partly because I don't know how many teams
will be entering yet, but I do know the prizes will be split among the top 3
teams at the end. I will announce the exact breakdown of everything when I know
more.
6. And just like TOGS III, Death Stud and I will be the sole arbiters of any dispute
that may arise. Whine all you like, but as Nuln told you last time, that's how
it is.
7. M & RR Clause (go ahead, read between the capitals): I reserve the right to
disallow entry to this tourney if you have a previous history of being a big fat
mouth about everything.
I think that pretty much covers it. I will be accepting team entries as of now
and then posting them in the newsletters as I receive entry fees. Please feel free
to e-mail me regarding any questions or comments at Ganolus@aol.com. So everyone don
your best pair of leg warmers, hop on your favorite farm animal, and ride to Aradi
for the 4th kinda-annual Tournament that must not be named for no apparent reason
whatsoever, or T#%S IV, for short. See ya'll there!
-- Ganolus Oakleaf, T#%S IV Commish

To All Managers -- I would like to take this time to announce that my alliance, The
Association, is no more. Due to the dead weight managers of the alliance and their
lack of participation, DarkSpirit and I have formed a new alliance: The Firm. We
have taken on two members so far and are looking for a few more. If you would like
to find out more about The Firm, you can diplo Dark Spirit, Unknowns XX in arena 15
or myself, Sungod, Sadists F2FII in arena 62.
