In the Far West:

"Roofs?" Herlas leaned across the rail and peered down into the water. "I've
heard of the Drowned Land, of course, but I hadn't realized it would be on our
course, and so close to the surface--"
Ashon Chang grabbed the wizard's belt and hauled him back. "You can't swim,
remember? And we aren't stopping here to explore, even if you can. We have more
important things to do." He glanced across at Werre. "As soon as the wind changes,
we should be able to get loose."
The Adantri nodded. "Sooner, I think. You might not realize it, but even here
in the middle of this sea, there are tides, and the tide is rising. We should float
off any time now." He frowned at the plain of water around them, and the distant
line of darkness on the horizon that was probably land. "I just hope we don't hit
any other...roof before we get away from this place."
"So do we all," Vurand growled. "Roofs instead of reefs! Drowned cities! The
sooner we get our feet back on dry land, the happier I'll be."

"You could never pass yourself off as Tzaltakkan," Zakar said. "Your coloring
is wrong--we could fix that, maybe, but your face is the wrong shape, too. And
everybody in this city who isn't Tzaltakkan by blood is a slave. Besides, you don't
speak the language."
Shania Silverstar scowled, already not liking where this seemed to be going.
"There must be, I don't know, traders from other lands? Travelers--big cities always
have foreign travelers--"
"Not in Zinaco-Lal. No foreigner gets into this city as a free man. Traders
and travelers don't get past the outer harbor and the Foreigners' Quarter. We're in
the heart of the city here, woman. And no matter when we leave the shrine, you will
be seen. Count on it. So you have to be--to at least look like--something that
won't raise questions. The slave of someone of true Tzaltakkan blood. And," he went
on before she could answer, "people will be looking for you. You specifically--
blonde, fair-skinned. So we have to make you unmemorable. As much as possible,
anyway. So we'll dye your hair black and darken your skin as much as we can, too."
He studied her, frowning.
Shania could see that now he had forgotten whatever personal pleasure he took in
the thought of her posing as his slave and was considering the practical aspects.
She turned her own thoughts to the practical aspects. Distasteful as the proposed
ruse was, Zakar was probably right when he said it was the only thing that would work
here and now. She could change her appearance magically...no, better not. That
change could be made as well with simple physical means. Better save what magical
energy she had at the moment for a serious need. "Soot will do for my hair if you
can't find anything better," she said briskly. "Red ochre, maybe, for my skin? And
tea or something like it, to take the white out of this shift."
He nodded. "I've got a contact who can get what we'll need." He smiled without
humor. "In a brothel." He moved to the exit from the shrine. "It shouldn't take me
long to get the stuff. Stay here and stay out of sight until I get back."
He was gone before she could utter any of the remarks that sprang to mind, such
as that she was smart enough not to go out and be recognized, and wasn't his servant,
and....
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
It was the tide that finally got their ship off the roof. Imperceptible so far
from shore, the waters rose. The only sign of it was the slow drag and the final
lift that freed the vessel. Though it was late in the day, Werre sent the ship
shoreward--according to their charts, at least--as quickly as possible. He put
Jammies and Vurand in the bow to watch for other obstacles so long as there was light
enough to see them. But apparently the tower that had caught them was the tallest
building left in the drowned city. By sunset, there were no more roofs to be
glimpsed in the water.
"Some day," Herlas muttered, "I will come back here. There are spells that
would permit exploration of that which is sunken, if it does not lie to deep. To be
the first man in millennia to look upon the towers of vanished Melantea...."
"There are probably lots of western wizards who've dived on these ruins," Ashon
Chang countered. "Why not? It's right in their back yard."
"Never!" the Fratsfan responded immediately. "The gods could not do that to
me--"
Vurand's scornful laughter cut across his words. "Why should the gods care if
you're the first or the ninety-first?" The Orc squinted at the shore, red hills and
black shadows in the sunset light. As far east along it as he could see, at the
limit of the light was an area where the shapes of light and shadow were straight-
edged, square-cornered. "Will we try to reach that city tonight?"
"No. Too dangerous to go sailing around here in the dark," Werre answered.
"Rocks, ruins, or reefs, we don't want to hit anything else."

In the Far West:

Ashon Chang studied the coastline. It was barely visible in the twilight, but
close enough that he could smell turned earth and mown hay. "We're taking a risk
anchoring here," he murmured. "Even if we're not seen from the land, I would expect
passing ships...."
"You have a better idea?" Werre growled.
Startled, the samurai glanced over his shoulder. He hadn't realized that anyone
was near enough to hear him. "No, I was talking to myself. Worrying out loud."
"Plenty to worry about," the Adantri agreed. "But it's a wasted effort.
Doesn't change anything. Know the risks and what could go wrong, know what your
options are in dealing with them, and then relax."
Ashon Chang glanced farther along the rail, to where Rughal was pacing and
looking about as relaxed as a tiger in a cage. "Easy to say, not so easy for some to
do...."
Werre followed his gaze and laughed. "Too bad there's no way to harness that
energy! The people who took Shania had better watch out--Rughal will be nearly
berserk by the time we get there."
"Assuming we can find her," the samurai said somberly. "We don't have much to
go on."
Werre laughed again. "We can use Rughal as a hunting dog, if we have to!" Then
he sobered, too. "If she's still alive, we'll find her. But I wish we knew more
about the people we'll be dealing with."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
"These people are insane!" Shania muttered. She kept her head down for the
properly submissive appearance, but that didn't stop her from seeing and hearing
enough of what was going on around her. They were crossing a medium-sized plaza
overlooking the inner harbor. It was crowded with jostling merchants and sailors and
housewives shopping, petty nobles surrounded by their retinues of servants and
soldiers. A colorful crowd, and a noisy one, and a crowd that seemed unmoved by the
sacrifices being carried out on a raised platform to one side. "They're killing
children," she hissed. "Babies!"
Zakar, who had one hand locked around her wrist, pulling her forward steadily,
shrugged slightly. "They're desperate. And most of the babies wouldn't live to
their second birthday anyway. None will, if the Arcanum isn't stabilized. End of
the world as we know it. Besides, being sacrificed is an honor. Ask any of the
priests." He towed her into an alley behind the sacrificial platform, along the
narrow way at a fast trot that left her breathless, and out into another, smaller,
plaza.
     "They're killing babies. It isn't--"
Zakar stopped, forcing her to look at him. "Fair? Is that what you were going
to say? LIFE isn't fair. We couldn't have saved any of those babies, woman. We'd
just have added our deaths to theirs--which might have amused the gods, but it
wouldn't have accomplished anything worth doing."
     "But--"
"They tell me you're centuries old, elf woman. How did you last so long without
recognizing the facts? Life is HARD, woman. The universe is a cannibal. It brings
us to life, and then it eats us without a qualm. There is no such thing as 'fair' in
life."
"If you really believe that, why do anything at all? Why not just curl up and
die?"
"Because I won't give the universe, or the gods, or the priests, or ANYBODY the
satisfaction of seeing ME surrender. I am nobody's easy meat!" Apparently
considering the subject closed, he glanced up at the sky, gauging time by the stars.
"Almost dawn. We wouldn't get ten steps trying to leave the city before dawn, but
after it...we've got a chance."
"Good! The sooner I'm out of this city, the better I'll feel," Shania muttered.
Zakar laughed. "Me, too! I feel like a mouse trying to move inconspicuously
through a crowd of cats." He glanced around the plaza, which was nearly deserted,
and picked a doorway to darkness on the left, heading in that direction.
Once through the arch, the darkness was as complete as blindness. The air was
cold, uninhabited, and smelled faintly of old blood.
"We can wait for dawn here," Zakar said. "No one will disturb us. You said you
can contact your companions, if you have a place to be quiet and concentrate. This
is it. Tell 'em we're leaving the city on the west side and will move along the
shore till we meet them."
"I may be able to contact them," Shania corrected him. She reached out her free
hand, found a wall, and slid down to a sitting position. "I will try, but I make no
promises."

Not Talahya:

Carris Fallstar glanced around the interior quickly. The light was red and
seemed dim, though it was hot. Five free-standing hearths burned aromatic wood, or
maybe it would be better to say that aromatic woods smoldered on the hearths. There
was more smoke than flame and light coming from them. What little he could make out
seemed slightly blurred--three large lizard men and some anonymous pieces of
furniture. It smelled strange, spicy, musty, cloying without being sweet, an acrid
undernote. Reptilian, he supposed. "I suppose those three are the leaders, chiefs
or captains or whatever--"
"But they aren't reptiles," Moonjumper murmured, standing close behind him. Not
that she would have been overheard, as Thristle was making a long statement in his
own language. "At least, not what we'd call reptiles--they're warm-blooded."
"Then why do they keep it so blasted hot?" Scarlatti growled in his other ear.
"Must be what they're used to from their own world," Rogan suggested. "And...
there are more than three of them and Thristle here. I can sense several more at the
back of this space."
"Can't see 'em," Carris said after a moment. "The light's too dim, and all this
smoke...." He sneezed. "Not that I'm doubting you." Before he could say more,
Thristle's introduction came to an end.
One of the three lizard men they could see made a gesture. Thristle stepped
aside, allowing the man to face the gladiators without obstruction. "The young one
tells me that you are warriors in your own land," he said. His voice was deep, his
words heavily accented, but clear enough. "That you wish to return to your own
land."
The tone of the last sentence made it a question. "This is true," Carris said.
"It seems that our world is in some ways much like this one, but in others much
different. And the biggest difference is that this is not...home."
A sort of whistling sigh ran around the room, every lizard man sharing in it.
"We understand this distinction," the leader said. "We also feel it. If you
will help us to regain our Home, our Great Triliske, which is primarily a matter of
fighting, then we will call upon the priests and power-workers of Great Triliske to
help you to your Home."
"Seems like a fair deal," Scarlatti muttered quietly.
"There is more to it than shows," Fizban whispered back. "Else they would need
no help."
Carris Fallstar nodded very slightly. "I see that your men are all warriors,
and Thristle has told us that you are trained to it," he said, "and I wonder what
difference a few more could make."
The lizard man's head dipped in acknowledgment. "It is true that we are
fearsome in battle. But we cannot fight until we have reached the battlefield, and
the way to it lies through a realm of such cold that we would be nearly helpless. We
know this because we have made the attempt, and nearly half our number died in it.
We need those who can withstand the cold long enough to open the door for us."
"Presumably after fighting our way TO the door," Carris murmured. "And in
return for this, you will ask your wizards to open OUR door."
"That is the bargain we offer you," the big lizard agreed. "Of course, our
'wizards' cannot serve you until we have fought our way through to Great Triliske,
and your aid in that fighting may also be important, but..." the man spread his hands
in a curiously human gesture, "that is the best we can do--for you AND for
ourselves."
"It's difficult to be sure with an unfamiliar life form," Rogan said after the
silence had stretched into a full minute, "but I think, if this man is holding
anything back, it is not a critical fact or..." the blind Aruaki hesitated and then
shrugged, "not something of critical importance. I think he is truly offering the
best deal he can."
There was no need to consult his companions formally. Carris could feel that
the humans were in agreement. Probably it was an aspect of their short lives that
they made up their minds so quickly. The elf shrugged in his turn. "We'll take your
deal," he said. "When do we start?"

The Isle of the Eye, truly Talahya:

"The Arcanum with respect to the Isle has stabilized for the moment," the wizard
Tanrith reported. "But I don't know--"
"I am not interested in what you don't know," Sheila Greywand snapped. "Tell me
what you do know. Where are the gladiators who were caught by wandering Gates during
the first flux? Or don't you know that?"
"I'm not certain, but indications are that they ended up somewhere in the
Thallian realm. It is, after all, one of the other universes most closely tied to
ours."
Sheila's brows snapped together in a truly formidable frown, one that emphasized
the orcish part of her heritage. "It's HIM, isn't it? That damned Dwarf is doing
this to me, and I won't stand for it! I will take him DOWN."
"Er...shouldn't we see about getting the displaced gladiators back, first?"
"Nonsense. A mere half dozen? They're easily replaced," she snarled.
"Besides, I need to make an example. After they way gladiators failed to retrieve
the Eyes--"
"That was not their fault," the old wizard argued. "Nothing lasts forever--that
is a fundamental law of the multiverse. The Eyes have reached the end of their
span."
Sheila fixed him with a hard stare that had a glint of...almost madness. "I
could have extended them, IF they had been brought to me in time. Get me the
coordinates for all the Gates that link Ghea with Thallia. Do it NOW, old man."

Various places in the Multiverse:

The Dwarf scowled across his desk, a slab of polished granite that would have
looked over-large in front of a giant. His chief wizards looked back at him calmly.
Their employer was a hard man, but he didn't penalize messengers for the bad news
they brought. Usually. "It's HER, isn't it? This it the kind of low, underhanded,
nasty action I'd expect from someone who's part Orc and part Elf. The two worst
races you could find! How bad is it?"
"She's found all the obvious gates," the wizard Skaefin said. "From the power
flux, I assume she plans to close them. This will cause more problems for her than
for us, but still..." his frown was almost as formidable as the Dwarf's. "It's a
matter of principle! We should strike back!"
"Could be dangerous, that," the sorceress Lilinith murmured. "Now that she's
terminating her Kaikwok project, she'll have the manpower to do...many violent
things. We don't NEED that kind of trouble. Sir."
"The real problem will be our manpower." The lizard mage Frilz's voice was dry,
as always, but there was a hint of genuine concern. "Those of our people who
immigrated here from Ghea may find themselves dragged back against their wills. It
could weaken our defense."
"She can retrieve the immigrants?" The Dwarf visibly shrugged off his anger to
concentrate on the immediate threat. "What are the parameters?"
"Not as bad as it might be," Skaefin said promptly. "My researches indicate
there's a time limit. I don't know what, exactly, that limit is--the flux between
dimensions makes it difficult to--"
"Don't make excuses," the Dwarf snapped. "I assume you did your best. What's
the approximate time limit?"
"Six months or so, I think." Skaefin glanced at his fellow wizards for
confirmation.
     Both nodded.
"More or less," Frilz confirmed. "It depends on how much of her own power she
wants to expend. Those who came of their own choice and were properly integrated
will be resistant even if they haven't been here long. The ones who stumbled through
gates accidentally...." He spread his hands in the gesture that served his race for
a shrug.
"Loss of the involuntary immigrants won't be a problem," Lilinith agreed. "But
there is a chance, a good one I believe, that people who are closely associated with
them when they are, shall we say, retrieved may be hauled away with them."
"And because they came by chance, we don't know where they are," the Dwarf
finished, "or who they're with." He shrugged. "If that's all she can do, we'll be
fine. She needs us more than we need her. But she's got more than one trick up her
sleeve. The situation will have to be watched closely."
The Dwarf's fourth adviser, the giant Hadrubal, stirred finally. "We might send
a counter-force into HER universe," he rumbled.
"No." The Dwarf's voice was emphatic. "Right now, we're in the right. WE
aren't taking hostile actions, we're the DEFENDERS. That gives us a potent edge in
the forum of multiversal opinion. I won't risk that unless I can be sure that such a
stance would gain us much more. There will be no invasion from here. Not now,
anyway."

Scarlatti had expected them to go by ship to some other island, or to the
mainland of this world, whatever it was. But the lizard men were leading the way to
high ground, and from the arrangement of the trees and stones on that knoll, he
realized that the transportation was going to be magical. Teleportation, perhaps--he
had to remind himself that the instability that made teleportation on Ghea so
dangerous did not apply here. Wherever here was. Possibly a true Gate. Would that
mean that the home of the lizard folk was in a different world, just as Ghea was in a
different world from this one?
"If they can open this Gate," Carris Fallstar muttered, "they can open a Gate to
Ghea."
"It's easier to open a Gate that is already there," Fizban pointed out. "As
this one which will lead us to their home clearly is. The Gate to OUR home will have
to be found or created first. We must do this their way--their Gates first."
"That is the bargain we agreed to," Rogan added.
"I wasn't suggesting we break it," Carris snapped. "You humans are too damned
touchy about things like that--which shows your race's basic unreliability. I was
just making an observation."
The oldest of the lizard men, the one that might be a wizard, though his regalia
of bones and shells and odd bits of this and that seemed more like the gear of a
witchdoctor, gestured them forward. They took positions at his direction, along with
an equal number of lizard warriors.
The old lizard shook his rattle and whistled a call into the sky. Power rippled
around him. Around them. The world faded to gray.

Power rippled across the sea, turning blue water to steel gray and the clear sky
to a dome of white glass.
"Sorcery!" the ship's captain gasped. He made a sign to avert ill fortune.
A futile sign, Shylock knew. The power that gripped this ship, the power he
could feel all around him, was too great for such a simple preventive measure. There
was power enough here to turn the world inside out.
And that was what it was doing.

                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard

I'll write for Abby, as well as myself. Well, AK47, I have difficulty seeing
the difference between your quest and that of those you hunt. I mean, "...hunt down
and destroy..." Sounds like what they did to you, so how are you different? And as
for the Sand Dancers, I don't know if the same persona is manager, but Abby has
fought in several arenas with them, including DM 76, where I was born, and never had
anything but a normal adversary relationship. Of course, I don't know all the
details, but I think I'll follow Leeta's suggestion and stay clear of it.
For now, I'll just relax and enjoy the Tower.

                    Atonement, TG of the Holidays

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

The Unknown Spymaster was prepared to show us all "more fun than a barrel of
Zontanis." While I will agree that putting Zontani in a barrel is an idea with
merit, Unknown's idea of "fun" puzzles me. Note some of his statements:
     Carla flies.
     Hannya is a melon.
     Atonement has a tail.
     Kalandra is not subtle.
Earthshaking, are they not? Let's see what else he found worthy of comment.
Ah, four out of five gladiators protect the body. Oh yes? MY observation
indicates more protect the head. Of course, that IS part of the body.
Dueling for Dollars was avoided by Royal Flush, allegedly for violations of
acceptable hygiene.
Snooper got the most challenges, but no reason is suggested by Unknown.
Probably just as well.
Scum #1 may have overtaxed his mental capacity in challenge up 72 points to
fight Snooper. Oh yes? Does it count as rash if Scum #1 learned a lot?
Stonewall is compared to a weasel for challenging down twenty-five points. Is
this what weasels do? I would never have guessed.
It was due to "heroic notions" that Leviticus challenged Dollface. O-kay.
Matador is expected to take up fighting with two shields and calling cheering on
total parries, this expectation being engendered by his downchallenge of forty
points.
And so on. How come the Unknown Spymaster can get away with saying these things
and I'm supposed to be low-key?

I will note from my own observation that we had thirty-four fights, fifteen
challenge matches, of which one involved a TV challenge, and five standbys fought.
Two fights tied for longest at eight minutes. Piffling. You're hardly trying at a
mere eight minutes.

     The fights--
NORM PETERSON (39-2745) (39-69-0,43) of DRINKING BUDDIES fought GWEN RYDER (9-
4867) (18-4-0,63) of DREAM PARK. NORM PETERSON unbelievably bested GWEN RYDER in an
exciting 4 minute bloody battle. The really exciting part came afterward when people
who had bet on Norm were trying to catch the bookies and collect. This counts as an
upset-win, meaning the bookies are very upset that Norm won.
BIRAN (54-1927) (15-4-1,50) of THE WHITE COMPANY fought an UNEMPLOYED PERSON
(106-5) (0-0-0,70) of Crysalis Crew. BIRAN was demolished by an UNEMPLOYED PERSON in
a popular 1 minute uneven contest. The Unemployed Person in question subsequently
received seven job offers as a trainer of gladiators.
WILD CARD HAMMER (33-6864) (21-16-2,57) of CASINO HAMMERZ fought BINGE N PURGE
(45-3567) (16-7-0,55) of EMETICS. WILD CARD HAMMER beat BINGE N PURGE in a 3 minute
fray. Does this mean that Wild Card binged but did NOT purge?
SIR YDER (31-4353) (21-8-0,87) of WILLBENDERS fought DANNIA TYL SIO (52-3393)
(31-20-1,66) of SAND DANCERS. SIR YDER overpowered DANNIA TYL SIO in an exciting 1
minute one-sided fight.
EGOTISTIC DUKE (28-2779) (19-8-1,58) of ABYSMAL BEHAVIORS fought IRIADOR (50-
2481) (13-7-2,48) of DRUID'S GROVE. EGOTISTIC DUKE was overpowered by IRIADOR in a 1
minute one-sided match. There's a blow to the old ego.
MERCY (54-1797) (17-9-0,97) of THE BLACK COMPANY fought SCOOTER (54-118) (16-6-
1,77) of THE MUPPETS. MERCY overpowered SCOOTER in an action packed 2 minute
gruesome one-sided fight. This fight showed an amazing LACK of mercy, which has to
make you wonder about warrior names.
FEATHER (54-1742) (17-14-2,100) of THE WHITE COMPANY fought CAPTURED PIRATE KING
(106-2) (0-0-0,30) of Crysalis Crew. FEATHER overpowered CAPTURED PIRATE KING in a 1
minute uneven competition. Not to be wondered at, considering the recognition
difference. And then, if the Pirate was a GOOD fighter, he wouldn't have been
captured, would he?
HANNYA (73-4350) (24-7-1,168) of BLOOD LUST fought CARLA (39-2428) (58-70-1,128)
of DRINKING BUDDIES. HANNYA was beaten by CARLA in a 2 minute fray. Birds and
melons, the Unknown Spymaster says. He's blind, though--that bag on his head blocks
his vision. This looks to ME like damned bad luck on the part of Hannya. After all,
experience DOES make a difference.
THANATO (39-2824) (25-21-1,164) of OPHIDIAN ORDER fought CRYSALIS GUARD (106-29)
(0-0-0,200) of Crysalis Crew. THANATO was vanquished by CRYSALIS GUARD in a 2 minute
gruesome uneven bout. As you see, we are WELL guarded here. Doesn't that make you
feel safe?
JUAN (41-2304) (24-15-0,171) of DREAM TEAMS fought KING FORADAY (47-3762) (40-
38-4,179) of ROYAL FLUSH. JUAN defeated KING FORADAY in a 2 minute match. Does this
mean Juan is now the King for a Day?
SANDMAN (11-3923) (50-52-2,199) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS fought KITALA THE BOLD (78-
875) (79-101-2,203) of SAND DANCERS. SANDMAN was savagely defeated by KITALA THE
BOLD in an action packed 8 minute fight. Are we looking at a slow dance here, or
just boredom on the part of the fighters? It says the fight was "action packed," but
what kind of actions, eh?
FIGHTER ACE (47-1189) (51-40-6,194) of ROYAL FLUSH fought BELGOROTH (50-3175)
(29-27-0,164) of DARK SIDHE. FIGHTER ACE overpowered BELGOROTH in a 1 minute uneven
fight. Well, it SAYS he's an ace at fighting, after all.
AVONSIDE (13-3927) (31-38-1,364) of KIWI CONNECTION fought PRIMUS (21-4975) (37-
12-0,204) of REAL BEER. AVONSIDE was bested by PRIMUS in an exciting 3 minute bout.
Many gladiators prefer real beer over kiwi fruit, of course. But why isn't Primus IN
Primus, hmm?
DUNEDIN (14-3703) (28-34-0,398) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought TASHIA (11-2740)
(28-31-1,198) of DEADLY DE-PARTED. DUNEDIN overpowered TASHIA in an action packed 2
minute uneven fray. What made this fight uneven? This one of the philosophical type
questions that spy reporters ponder in their all-too-rare off hours. Sometimes very
off. Is it because Dunedin is not de-parted? Or because Tashia is taller? One of
the mysteries of the universe.
AB DESTINED 4 THE DA (65-1154) (16-6-2,318) of PAUL'Z PHARTZ fought ARENAMASTER
SANDAVOL (106-28) (0-0-0,200) of Crysalis Crew. AB DESTINED 4 THE DA was narrowly
defeated by ARENAMASTER SANDAVOL in a 5 minute [cut off by Hal!]. What can the
Unknown Spyreporter have had to say that Hal wouldn't except? We consider the
excesses of Rithakar, the sins of the Folstrom, the crimes for which the people of
Cundi launched the most recent Chaos War, and then the mind boggles. Arenamasters
can be so devilishly ingenious....
*WINTER* (65-3644) (27-24-1,279) of ANCIENT KNIGHTS fought BALCLUTHA (14-3169)
(24-33-1,375) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. *WINTER* was savagely defeated by BALCLUTHA in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute conflict. While I have nothing against the Ancient Knight in
question (but shouldn't an oldester like you be home by a warm fire?), I am always
pleased--at this season especially!--to see someone defeat winter.
WILLIE MAKIT (73-514) (102-38-3,251) of MISTAKEN IDENTITY fought PAT (35-2292)
(35-41-2,505) of COMMON JOE'S. WILLIE MAKIT beat PAT in a 2 minute match. "Beat"?
That's all? How can I spin that out into rambling comment? Try to be more
flamboyant next time, you two.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE (25-2529) (43-37-2,410) of DUELING FOR DOLLARS fought CRYSALIS
GUARD (106-29) (0-0-0,200) of Crysalis Crew. WHEEL OF FORTUNE was subdued by
CRYSALIS GUARD in a 2 minute bout. Again I note how very good our Guards are here
this month. I don't understand it, mind, but I note it.
GROLSCH (21-5029) (34-4-4,226) of REAL BEER fought FATHER OF ALL MUNS (20-2306)
(31-41-1,500) of THE FAMILY TREE. GROLSCH bested FATHER OF ALL MUNS in an exciting 4
minute fight. Real beer will do that to anyone. Or so I'm told. But that does rais
the question, what is UN-real beer?

     Ah, the challenge matches.
SIR LANCELOT (72-4997) (14-11-2,53) of KNIGHTS TEMPLAR challenged DEBBIE DAHMER
(45-3579) (20-6-1,65) of MORDRED'S MADMEN. Up 12. SIR LANCELOT was bested by DEBBIE
DAHMER in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. And did Debbie have a drink with an umbrella
in it? I realize this isn't Ms. Tonte, but it seems to be a "Debbie" thing, and I
hear those umbrellas can inflict nasty wounds to the hand and face.
MATADOR (11-4139) (37-33-2,84) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged EGAN FORN (39-
3295) (24-29-0,44) of THE MIDDLE WAY. Down 40. MATADOR viciously subdued EGAN FORN
in an action packed 1 minute brutal Challenge duel. No surprise here, given the
respective experience and ranking of the warriors.
LEVITICUS (54-1687) (17-15-2,100) of THE WHITE COMPANY challenged DOLLFACE (39-
2372) (56-75-1,139) of DRINKING BUDDIES. Up 39. LEVITICUS was luckily beaten by
DOLLFACE in a popular 8 minute Challenge duel. You call that luck, do you? Rather
an unkind judgment on Dollface, cosnidering how much more experience she's got. But
what I want to know is, What did they talk about in the clinches? And did they
really go to dinner together afterward, as Rumor claims?
JACK SPRAT (47-2954) (46-55-4,133) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged BUCKNER (50-2841)
(25-25-1,135) of IRON CURTAIN. Up 2. JACK SPRAT demolished BUCKNER in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided Challenge brawl. Does that mean the Iron Curtain came
down? I did wonder where all those rust flakes came from.
TEN COMMANDMENTS (47-3843) (36-33-0,140) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged TYRE (31-
3713) (28-19-0,148) of DARQUE FORCES. Up 8. TEN COMMANDMENTS demolished TYRE in a 2
minute mismatched Challenge competition. More demolishment! What is this, a
demolition derby? NATURALLY you wouldn't expect someone Darque to obey commandments.
STONEWALL (11-3900) (47-54-2,131) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged MIRTA (51-4033)
(42-27-1,106) of SAND DANCERS. Down 25. STONEWALL was beaten by MIRTA in an
exciting 1 minute Challenge fight. Five out of six spy reporters would say that
Stonewall got his just deserts, and the sixth would take the Fifth Amendment.
SANDPAWN (11-4169) (44-21-1,167) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS challenged KYRA (51-3774)
(41-39-1,161) of SAND DANCERS. Down 6. SANDPAWN defeated KYRA in an action packed 6
minute Challenge match. As with all fights, this will make someone happy. And
someone will be annoyed. Such is life in the arena. Which beats death in the arena.
DISCO QUEEN (47-1992) (32-13-1,180) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SIR LY (10-4116)
(38-29-0,183) of SIR AGLIO. Up 3. DISCO QUEEN was savagely defeated by SIR LY in a
5 minute Challenge duel. Well, that's what happens when you're caught dancing after
curfew, Disco.
LONALILTA (50-2806) (49-42-2,206) of DARK SIDHE challenged KING UVDAHELL (47-
1643) (32-12-1,210) of ROYAL FLUSH. Up 4. LONALILTA vanquished KING UVDAHELL in an
action packed 2 minute uneven Challenge duel. So, if a King Uvdahell is defeated,
does that mean his defeater is Uvdaheaven? Or are we looking at a mere nom-de-arena
and the King in question is actually a pussycat at home?
BEAUTY QUEEN (47-3352) (35-37-3,200) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged BUTCH (70-6657)
(32-23-2,202) of A UNIT. Up 2. BEAUTY QUEEN was handily defeated by BUTCH in a 1
minute uneven Challenge fight. What could she do, after all, when Butch started
chipping her fingernails and messing up the polish? Somethings can't be endured.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (82-58-2,208) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SIDON (31-3712)
(31-21-2,216) of DARQUE FORCES. Up 8. JACK VALTRAEDS was vanquished by SIDON in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge fight. This has got to be just a bit embarrassing for
Jack. But there are days like that.
DAIRY QUEEN (47-2685) (59-35-2,190) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SIR PLUS (10-4316)
(30-21-1,200) of SIR AGLIO. Up 10. DAIRY QUEEN luckily beat SIR PLUS in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute Challenge competition. It was probably the chocolate dip and nutty
sprinkles. At least, that's what pleased the crowd, and who can argue with that?
     SCUM #1 (50-2743) (46-50-0,219) of DARK SIDHE challenged SNOOPER (1-5154) (34-
17-3,291) of MIKE'S MISFITS. Up 72. SCUM #1 was savagely defeated by SNOOPER in an
exciting 4 minute gory Challenge melee. Granting the loss was nearly inevitable, you
have to salute Scum's guts. Which were all over the sand by the end of the fight....
Our sole TV challenge of the day: JUNINHO (7-4001) (23-14-1,189) of IMPORTED
FOOTBALLERS TV challenged SANDBLASTER (11-3899) (50-51-3,189) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS.
Straight across. JUNINHO devastated SANDBLASTER in an action packed 2 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. I've never seen an opponent used as a football before.
Impressive.

And for the title: KALANDRA (50-2443) (55-55-3,257) of DARK SIDHE challenged
ATONEMENT (82-761) (44-25-0,347) of A UNIT XV. Up 90. KALANDRA was vanquished by
ATONEMENT in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title brawl. We salute Kalandra's nerve
and Atonement's skill.

Kitala The Bold -- I guess now you could write a book on 101 Ways To Lose A Fight.
In honor of your 101 lost fight I have written a song for you to sing. It goes like
this:
I was bold and now must fight
Cause I was rude to Andorian Knight
Be challenged up or challenged down
my butt is kicked around town
Whip me, beat me, I need love
Hit me with your leather glove
Whip it around and make it crack
Lay your whip across my back
The arena sand sure gets gritty
I will learn to respect Aruak City.
-- Sandblaster (Pleased with himself but not his own win/loss record)

Kyra of Sand Dancers Stable -- You really must try harder. That is the second win I
got off you back to back. You learned a couple defensive skills, perhaps you'll
start using them. -- Sandpawn (getting bored with always beating same Sand Dancer
warrior)

Carny of Carnival -- I agree it is very complex on how just showing up you are able
to make Crysalis arena an Andorian Arena. I wish you luck in your goal. I believe
in living under Andorian Laws of Honor but if that honor is insulted then we must
fight like Delarquans until wrong is righted. -- AK47

Jack Valtreads -- I'd say something witty, but I'm not used to this winter weather.
Well done. -- Kitala the Bold and Increasingly Deft

Sandpawn -- A fine Andorian down-challenge there. -- Kyra

Split -- (mournful look) I'll say! You split my hairs! Very sneaky work. -- Egan
Forn

What's A Blinker? -- Damned if I know! -- Mirta

Norm Peterson -- It's true that if you're drunk, it doesn't hurt as much when the
Infirmarian patches you up, but have you ever considered that if you were NOT drunk,
you might not need patching up? -- Dannia tyl Sio

Grolsch -- (modestly) Yes, I make sure to buy a beer for the voting public--both of
them--every month. -- Kitala the Bold and Popular

Catfish Hunter -- I must disagree. If I lost, I wasn't doing my best. And if I
wasn't doing my best, I deserved to lose. Circular, but all the best reasoning is.
-- Dannia tyl Sio

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE

Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:

DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
              ======================              ======================
                  0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
                1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
               5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
              11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
              21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
                31+ FE: Challengers Primus

All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
