Various places in the Multiverse:
The Dwarf scowled across his desk, a slab of polished granite that would have
looked over-large in front of a giant. His chief wizards looked back at him calmly.
Their employer was a hard man, but he didn't penalize messengers for the bad news
they brought. Usually. "It's HER, isn't it? This it the kind of low, underhanded,
nasty action I'd expect from someone who's part Orc and part Elf. The two worst
races you could find! How bad is it?"
"She's found all the obvious gates," the wizard Skaefin said. "From the power
flux, I assume she plans to close them. This will cause more problems for her than
for us, but still..." his frown was almost as formidable as the Dwarf's. "It's a
matter of principle! We should strike back!"
"Could be dangerous, that," the sorceress Lilinith murmured. "Now that she's
terminating her Kaikwok project, she'll have the manpower to do...many violent
things. We don't NEED that kind of trouble. Sir."
"The real problem will be our manpower." The lizard mage Frilz's voice was dry,
as always, but there was a hint of genuine concern. "Those of our people who
immigrated here from Ghea may find themselves dragged back against their wills. It
could weaken our defense."
"She can retrieve the immigrants?" The Dwarf visibly shrugged off his anger to
concentrate on the immediate threat. "What are the parameters?"
"Not as bad as it might be," Skaefin said promptly. "My researches indicate
there's a time limit. I don't know what, exactly, that limit is--the flux between
dimensions makes it difficult to--"
"Don't make excuses," the Dwarf snapped. "I assume you did your best. What's
the approximate time limit?"
"Six months or so, I think." Skaefin glanced at his fellow wizards for
confirmation.
Both nodded.
"More or less," Frilz confirmed. "It depends on how much of her own power she
wants to expend. Those who came of their own choice and were properly integrated
will be resistant even if they haven't been here long. The ones who stumbled through
gates accidentally...." He spread his hands in the gesture that served his race for
a shrug.
"Loss of the involuntary immigrants won't be a problem," Lilinith agreed. "But
there is a chance, a good one I believe, that people who are closely associated with
them when they are, shall we say, retrieved may be hauled away with them."
"And because they came by chance, we don't know where they are," the Dwarf
finished, "or who they're with." He shrugged. "If that's all she can do, we'll be
fine. She needs us more than we need her. But she's got more than one trick up her
sleeve. The situation will have to be watched closely."
The Dwarf's fourth adviser, the giant Hadrubal, stirred finally. "We might send
a counter-force into HER universe," he rumbled.
"No." The Dwarf's voice was emphatic. "Right now, we're in the right. WE
aren't taking hostile actions, we're the DEFENDERS. That gives us a potent edge in
the forum of multiversal opinion. I won't risk that unless I can be sure that such a
stance would gain us much more. There will be no invasion from here. Not now,
anyway."
Scarlatti had expected them to go by ship to some other island, or to the
mainland of this world, whatever it was. But the lizard men were leading the way to
high ground, and from the arrangement of the trees and stones on that knoll, he
realized that the transportation was going to be magical. Teleportation, perhaps--he
had to remind himself that the instability that made teleportation on Ghea so
dangerous did not apply here. Wherever here was. Possibly a true Gate. Would that
mean that the home of the lizard folk was in a different world, just as Ghea was in a
different world from this one?
"If they can open this Gate," Carris Fallstar muttered, "they can open a Gate to
Ghea."
"It's easier to open a Gate that is already there," Fizban pointed out. "As
this one which will lead us to their home clearly is. The Gate to OUR home will have
to be found or created first. We must do this their way--their Gates first."
"That is the bargain we agreed to," Rogan added.
"I wasn't suggesting we break it," Carris snapped. "You humans are too damned
touchy about things like that--which shows your race's basic unreliability. I was
just making an observation."
The oldest of the lizard men, the one that might be a wizard, though his regalia
of bones and shells and odd bits of this and that seemed more like the gear of a
witchdoctor, gestured them forward. They took positions at his direction, along with
an equal number of lizard warriors.
The old lizard shook his rattle and whistled a call into the sky. Power rippled
around him. Around them. The world faded to gray.
Power rippled across the sea, turning blue water to steel gray and the clear sky
to a dome of white glass.
"Sorcery!" the ship's captain gasped. He made a sign to avert ill fortune.
A futile sign, Shylock knew. The power that gripped this ship, the power he
could feel all around him, was too great for such a simple preventive measure. There
was power enough here to turn the world inside out.
And that was what it was doing.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
Contenders? I've yet to see RSI make any change that will benefit those of us
who seek to be more competitive with the long time powers, so I expect that these new
divisions will not be an improvement, for us. Just bump us up to fight those whose
longevity gives them the upper hand. If that division is as hard to train in as
Primus, I think I'll just retire.
Atonement, the cynic
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Hail and well met warriors of CRYSALIS! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. RANDOM MATCHUP caught the eye of
many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested PROOKIE and was awarded
32 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, PIXIE BLIGHT put
down SNOWFALL, causing her to lose 24 points of recognition in the process. Not for
nothing has ATONEMENT in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this
week he's proven his combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has warned that if
exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or
7!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In CRYSALIS "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat
in CRYSALIS these days is DARK SIDHE. At least, most blades in town are looking to
avoid them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find
any of ROYAL FLUSH last week. Busy avoiding DARK SIDHE? Loose talk at the arena has
reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after FATHER
OF ALL MUNS. Watch your back! At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on
GROLSCH. It has got the courage it takes. Witness its TV challenge this turn
against DUNEDIN! I must admit to some joy. Before my very eyes the underdog in this
contest, GROLSCH, defeated DUNEDIN to claim victory and recognition. Give WILLIE
MAKIT credit for his courage. Did you note how he challenged BALCLUTHA despite the
128 point difference in their rankings? The MISTAKEN IDENTITY stable will be up late
tonight, for indeed it was WILLIE MAKIT who claimed victory in the contest, ascending
11 in recognition! I cannot but express pride for the fearlessness of STONEWALL who
cast caution to the winds and challenged BELGOROTH, a fighter 48 points higher. 9
points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my admiration is what STONEWALL must
now weigh against the defeat which resulted. Give FEATHER credit for hers courage.
Did you note how she challenged JACK SPRAT despite the 43 point difference in their
rankings? Truth to tell, FEATHER did not come out of the fight a winner, but she
managed to capture much attention, gaining 1 in recognition. At the gambling halls I
have started to bet money on LEVITICUS. He has got the courage it takes. Witness
his challenge this turn against HANNYA! In the end LEVITICUS was bested by HANNYA, a
"sharp" reminder that higher recognition is an indication of greater skill. Still,
it was a worthy bout! As a gladiator gets older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of
his heart. True, MATADOR? Who could miss your "brave" challenge of EGAN FORN? Few
would not have guessed the outcome of the bout as EGAN FORN was defeated by MATADOR.
Is this what passes for courage in CRYSALIS? I cannot but express pride for the
fearlessness of EGOTISTIC DUKE who cast caution to the winds and challenged SIR YDER,
a fighter 53 points higher. 7 points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my
admiration is what EGOTISTIC DUKE must now weigh against the defeat which resulted.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in CRYSALIS. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now longer can
I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till
next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different
story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Baphomet -- Will you ever learn, you simply cannot beat me! -- Abraxis
AK47 -- I truly intend no disrespect, but I'm sitting here looking at Turn #480 for
Aruak City and I don't see an Andorian Knights stable *ANYWHERE*. I applaud that you
are willing to fight for its honor. Now, how about fighting for its honor *IN* Aruak
City? Especially since Leeta *DOES* fight there! -- Baphomet (whose alter ego has a
team there also!)
Leeta -- My apologies for no p-ads last turn. Prep for unsuccessful parole hearing.
But, I'm back in rare form. I don't concern myself with those who get their
underthings bunched so easily. Sometimes, a joke really is just a joke! -- Baphomet
Debbie Dahmer -- You are most definitely a very lucky wench. Musta been that shot to
the buttocks that ticked you off! (grin) -- Sir Lancelot the lecher
Berylstar -- Welcome to Crysalis! -- Your old friend, Baphomet
Sandpawn -- Another fine Andorian challenge. Can't you win on up-challenges? -- Kyra
Stonewall -- Have you considered that you might actually do better if you challenged
up? -- Mirta
Matador -- Have you Andorian Knights got some kind of monopoly on downchallenges? I
notice you seem to be the only ones doing it. -- Egan Forn
Sandman -- Good try, sir. -- Kitala the Bold and Honest Enough to Give Credit Where
It's Due
Sir Yder -- It was an amazing pleasure to fight a non-Andorian, even though I lost.
Well done! -- Dannia tyl Sio
Abby -- Yep, same manager as in Simtakka. -- Leeta, aka Li Dan
P.S. I've been digging back through the newsletters, and I can't find ANY instance
where we issued challenges here in Crysalis. There may be one, but I'm not finding
it. AK47 took exception to Kitala's remark, in a personal, that she "didn't like
being pawed by an Andorian." I don't think you were with us in Lin Tirian, where she
graduated, but Kitala's LIKE that. As mean-tempered a woman as you'd ever want to
avoid. This is probably due to her years as a captain of mercenaries in the Naowei.
Oh, well.
Andorian Knights -- If you're getting bored with fighting us, which is understandable
since our manager doesn't do strategy changes any more than challenges, why not fight
somebody else for a change? We're getting bored with fighting you, too. -- Sand

ZalCon2 Updates (1/9/04)
The contest will be starting on the turn due February 23rd, 2004 and run for 20
turns.
Only one team will be allowed for each manager in the contest, regardless of
whether additional teams are announced as contest entries. No exceptions for any
reason.
The Style Master points should read that there is +1 point for beating a member
of your own style even if the warrior is not registered for the contest.
Rolling points for consecutive turns as Style Master means that your warrior
gets the extra point every turn after the first 3 that he continues to hold the
title.
The points for Quality Wins should be clarified to read the winning warrior is
ranked below by the number of recognition points needed for each bonus point at the
start of the fight. For example, Warrior A (3-2-0, 17) beats Warrior B (4-1-0, 35)
and receives 2 bonus points under Quality Win for the 18 point difference in the
ranking.
I believe that is all the clarifications for the moment, please feel free to
email, diplo, call or write me with any other questions or concerns about the
contest.

CHAOTIC WINDS
Once, long ago, the four Winds of Time descended upon Alastari like a TEMPEST of
epic proportions, they slew everything within their all-encompassing reach. They
left nothing. In their wake lay smoldering ruins.
In their haste they sped towards the center of this great land like a colossal
giant would step across an ocean. The four storms picked up momentum on their way
towards each other. A collision was eminent.
The first storm wind, the oldest and wisest of the four was named APEXALUS. The
second, FLAGGSTAFF, was the quickest and loudest entity ever created. The third Wind
of Time was MATRIATIN, neither old or young, quick or slow, but fierce and feisty all
the same. The forth wind, ASSAMITHIUS, the youngest yet most creative in its means
of destruction.
When finally they merged at the center of ALASTARI, an incredible destructive
explosion occurred. And when the smoke and debris cleared they were one. CHAOS was
born.
And Chaos spread across the diminished lands reeking havoc and doom with its
passing, and destroying allover again that which already lay in ruin.
