REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Greetings, warriors of CRYSALIS! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into spy reporting. Ah, who am I fooling, I'm not
retired. I may be dead, but they expect me to show up at the office at sunrise every
day. Let me tell you, this is not how I planned to spend my afterlife. This wasn't
even how I planned to spend this evening! But Ketchum can be very, very persuasive
when he wants to be.
So, let's take a look at the day's fights. These are the first notes, made
actually DURING the fights (as opposed to the reasoned and witty comments that we spy
reporters come with in the office over a glass of beer afterward):
What's with PHILLIP THE BIRD? He actually beat X-POSSE's ORPHAN, and walked
away with 51 more points from the fight. And not only won but killed his opponent.
This Phillip is a mean bird. Here are the facts, as provided by the arena steward.
ORPHAN (72-5463) (22-13-2,137) of X-POSSE fought PHILLIP THE BIRD (40-3708) (15-8-
0,115) of CRUEL PET NAMES. ORPHAN was dispatched by PHILLIP THE BIRD in a 1 minute
bout. But I don't get the use of "dispatched" here. (Not my word, some damned
scribe put it in.) It makes it sound like Orphan was merely sent on a tedious
errand.
Laughs were big at MIDDLE WAY 6 while they watched HOLLAN INNIS clobber MAKKEH
KILLER. She (meaning Makkeh Killer, as Hollan is a he) lost 29 points and got
bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Do you really think Jorja would let her
warriors laugh at somebody who got bruised by objects thrown from the stands? It
seems unlikely. MAKKEH KILLER (72-6032) (17-14-0,65) of MILCHAMAH fought HOLLAN
INNIS (50-3388) (21-27-0,28) of MIDDLE WAY 6. MAKKEH KILLER was overpowered by
HOLLAN INNIS in a 1 minute uneven fight.
Oh, here's a good one, you know, the really stupid comments that the scribes put
in the spy reports and we have to pretend WE said? "Wouldn't it be nice to have live
subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted
prisoners." Anybody have any idea AT ALL what this is supposed to mean? Magicians
practice on live subjects. Gladiators practice on each other. What good would it do
any of you to have a "live subject" standing around to beat up? Will this teach you
skills? As if! as Debby would say.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the spy reports, for
lack of us having anything new to say. How well I know the feeling of being in the
most avoided team! (Yes, indeed, I was a host in myself.) Don't fall out of
practive, ANDORIAN KNIGHTS! In my day, no team with a 102-90-2 would scare me off!
Of course, it may not be a question of being "scared off." What's the problem, ROYAL
FLUSH?
What do people see in SANDBLASTER? His 69-63-3? ANDORIAN KNIGHTS ain't
talkin', but he's got 214 points. So? The Tower Guardian has more than that. Yeah,
all right, I think this means Sandblaster got blasted with the most challenges.
Today, this is not going to be hard to achieve, but I do wish that the scribes could
be a little more specific in these notes. Do I look like a mind reader?
In other "news," I note that there were thirty fights, of which seven were
challenges, and that TWELVE fights involved standbys. This is ridiculous. You're
supposed to fight EACH OTHER. Get your acts together.
I'm going to give you the piffling seven challenge matches, and then the title
fight (not a challenge), and call it a night. I'm getting too old for this stuff.
CUBA (26-3917) (20-8-0,89) of HERE TO PHOENIX challenged SNOWFALL (45-3473) (39-
25-0,90) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. Up 1. CUBA handily defeated SNOWFALL in an action
packed 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. Give that winning warrior a cigar!
BALDER (28-3778) (19-16-3,72) of VALHALLA challenged SUNFLASH (45-3474) (29-35-
1,58) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. Down 14. BALDER devastated SUNFLASH in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. And it looks to me like Sunflash was lucky to get
out of this alive.
FIVE GOLDEN RINGS (16-4331) (30-4-0,116) of GOLDEN GLADIATORS challenged
MELTDOWN (8-4353) (24-15-0,116) of X-FORCE. Straight across. FIVE GOLDEN RINGS
outwaited MELTDOWN in a dull 24 minute gory Challenge brawl. This was the longest
fight, and very well timed. I was ready for a nap about then.
TAOS (26-4042) (18-11-1,111) of HERE TO PHOENIX challenged BEARNICE (47-2847)
(21-28-6,112) of THE BEAR'S PAW. Up 1. TAOS defeated BEARNICE in an exciting 1
minute Challenge fight. I hear there was some "Taos lightning" involved in this
fight somehow. Anyone care to give us the story?
OUR LADY PEACE (79-1191) (24-10-2,159) of CHAPEL ROCK challenged CANNONBALL (72-
5313) (23-14-1,171) of X-POSSE. Up 12. OUR LADY PEACE vanquished CANNONBALL in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. This puts a whole different face on the question
of peace and war, doesn't it?
GRINNON BEARIT (47-2955) (35-22-3,203) of THE BEAR'S PAW challenged BEERVAHNA
(60-4292) (33-30-3,219) of INGRATE WHITE NORTH. Up 16. GRINNON BEARIT demolished
BEERVAHNA in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. And I could tell--that
grin, you know--that Mr. Bearit enjoyed every min-- every second of this fight.
JUNINHO (7-4001) (33-18-1,213) of IMPORTED FOOTBALLERS challenged TOADKILLER DOG
(47-1103) (25-7-1,216) of WASTED SCUM. Up 3. JUNINHO viciously subdued TOADKILLER
DOG in a crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge fight. And well he should! We don't want
dogs killing toads around here. This could have very unpleasant consequences, if it
became common. Dog kills toad, contracts Warty Poison from the slimy thing, and then
goes and bites a person, passing on the horrid disease. Can't have that!
Ah, for the title: KING UVDAHELL (47-1643) (45-21-1,278) of ROYAL FLUSH fought
STIGMA OF STUPID (31-4948) (24-9-1,189) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS. KING UVDAHELL was
defeated by STIGMA OF STUPID in a 1 minute Title duel. I can barely restrain my
enthusiam for UNFIT TO BE ORCS' outstanding member, Tower Guardian STIGMA OF STUPID.
Do you suppose Stupid will write a column? Or even can write one?
