They were said to be coming from far. Rumored to be coming from near.
Graduates from long ago. Graduates from the past year.
Managers choosing their Champions. Their Favorites called upon too. Bringing
their Hordes of Many. Others Assigning but Few.
Hammer had heard many of the reports and more. SWAMP LILY HAMMER had earned the
right to fight in The Most Active Graduate Arena in All of Alastari.
She was not the caliber style that Mouse had shown Hammer those long years ago.
Yet she was well worth continuing along The Greater Path of Glory.
Now that managers were transferring their gladiators from other ADM Arenas to
compete in Arena 106 it was the timing of the New Year to welcome back to Crysalis
four more of Hammer's own.
Three were out to prove they could ascend the ranks of Recognition more quickly
than the other two of their style. No matter who was ranked higher or longer at
reactivation. Two of them from the same stable out to prove who be the Better
Experiment. Not to mention the Original Choice of Creation now favored by Hammer for
Wit and Deftness for Future Creation Considerations.
Hammer had interest in observing their progress in the months ahead. Perhaps
they would provide more amusement. Perhaps much more than would be expected by
others.
Then there was the First TV Rookie ever sent to the Sands a Mere Decade Ago.
Hammer knew it was Time to Reactivate the Legend to lead the way in the New Year.
This one had been an Early Favorite. Now that Early Favorite would return to provide
a measure of entertainment once more.
SWAMP LILY HAMMER, WILD CARD HAMMER, LUCKY LADY HAMMER, TIGER SHARK HAMMER and
ZEBRA HAMMER would Stride and Glide and Grace the Sands of Crysalis once more.
A Cadre Canaille [Nucleus of Riff Raff Rabble] eager to Cross Blades with Others

Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
Ah, somehow I've ended up in the one position in the game, Duelmaster (or is that
DuelTwoMaster) that my manager most despises. Yet again by the bad luck that is
called a random matchup. On some level it is not a rational dislike but there are
reasons. Being a 99% basic D(II)M manager it does get tiring having your non-
sandbagger yanked at 12-3 again and again and again. And, I do so love the political
point penalty for being DuelTwoMaster. May who ever beats me find more joy in this
position than I have. You can blame my Grinch like attitude on the spymaster who
goaded me into writing this oh so joyful column.
But, not to ruin this column in its entirety here is a more traditional DuelTwoMaster
Column. How about some personal history; I am on of the rare DYO warriors out there.
My manager won my creation at the first FTF in Baltimore after winning the Champions
tourney with a warrior called Total Parry Scum. Perhaps one of the original champs
sandbaggers (does anyone else see any irony in that.) I was designed as:
11,16,3,17,21,3,13 and ended up with Little Damage. After a little sandbagging I
ended up with graduating with a 21-0-1 record, multiple TVs and a Champs TC. My kill
came on my last fight with a flurry of little damage scimitar crits plied onto my
poor opponent. My basic record arena and tourney record was 110-23-2. Then I hit
ADM. To say things have gone poorly would be an understatement. I won two more
fight before suffering a series of losses. At 23-0-1 I was inducted to Primus, which
troubled my manager enough, that he quit ADM for over 10 years (aren't you glad
Slugbait is so quiet because when he talks he sure is a grump.) Well I'm back since
Slugbait decided to play 106 to help the slow arena game. Good luck to who ever
beats me.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
What a day! The winter tourney looms, and warriors turn out in packs and droves
to tune up for it. Thirty-six fights, with only two standbys, why, we might be Free
Blades! In fact, we might make Free Blades look pretty silly, and if so, I will
relish the opportunity. Debby is a nice girl, but I don't really like nice girls,
and besides, she gloats.
So, our "Duelmaster," according to these notes, got the most challenges, four in
number to be precise. And by the way, Toadkiller Dog, my thanks for the column. I
was touched, I didn't think anyone really read this stuff.
The Stormguards got the most avoids, receiving them at the hands, or strategy
sheets, of Darque Forces.
Nobody died.
Thirty-six fights with two standbys, I said that already, didn't I? Ten
challenges, none of them TV, but every one an effort on the part of some manager to
better the performance of his gladiator. A salute to you all.
And, to get right to the heart of matters, here are the fights:
LADY CONSOLACION (28-3703) (22-26-2,71) of FILIPINA LADYZ fought ABHORRENCE (4-
5568) (14-7-2,51) of GLOOM AND DOOM. LADY CONSOLACION was subdued by ABHORRENCE in a
popular 1 minute duel. Actually, the whole process was abhorrent to her.
WHITE SETTLER (47-5322) (21-11-1,87) of NATURAL B. KILLERS 2 fought SUNFLASH
(45-3474) (31-42-1,66) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. WHITE SETTLER savagely defeated SUNFLASH
in an exciting 1 minute bloody match. The tedium of being low-ranked in an arena
without a lot of low-ranked warriors is having to fight the same bunch over and over
again. I'm sure that all are thrilled by this, or perhaps resigned to it.
SWAMP LILY HAMMER (47-5441) (18-8-1,73) of ALL SWAMP HAMMERZ fought FROSTFLARE
(45-4112) (16-15-0,63) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. SWAMP LILY HAMMER was devastated by
FROSTFLARE in a 2 minute uneven bout. They tell me Frosty froze the Lily in her (or
as the golems would say, hers) tracks. Not that one makes much in the way of tracks
in dry sand.
HOLLAN INNIS (50-3388) (27-30-0,76) of MIDDLE WAY 6 fought R.O.U.S. (106-4) (0-
0-0,50) of the College of Mimes. HOLLAN INNIS was subdued by R.O.U.S. in a 2 minute
match. Ah... not a man for the rats, Hollan. Not that anyone really LIKES to meet
with a rat of unusual size.
ROXANNE DE'MORRE (50-3449) (23-16-0,75) of DRUID'S GROVE fought MANI (31-5102)
(21-24-4,83) of SOL INVICTUS. ROXANNE DE'MORRE was viciously subdued by MANI in a
popular 2 minute bloody duel. The psychology of gladiating is an interesting study,
as you may note here that Mani is responding to the promise in his team name:
Invictus.
LITTLE DEVIL (14-4359) (16-11-0,45) of PLAYPEN fought FENDER GRALE (50-3389)
(20-38-2,64) of MIDDLE WAY 6. LITTLE DEVIL overpowered FENDER GRALE in a 1 minute
one-sided fray. It seems to me that some Middler beat the Little Tyke last time, but
I don't recall which one. Does it matter? Probably not. Just a case of turnabout.
SIPPYCUP SAM (14-4280) (16-11-3,39) of PLAYPEN fought LUCKY LADY HAMMER (33-
7043) (18-16-2,70) of CASINO HAMMERZ. SIPPYCUP SAM was defeated by LUCKY LADY HAMMER
in an exciting 1 minute bout. Is it really a case of luck, or does the lady have a
knack for this?
UNCERTAIN OMELET (47-3786) (15-7-0,100) of MYSTIC ORC FEAST fought TINY TIM (60-
6042) (19-5-1,63) of CRAZY CREEPS. UNCERTAIN OMELET handily defeated TINY TIM in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. And I, too, would quail when faced with a dubious
egg. I saw one, once, and smelled it. I do not care to repeat the experience.
LIONESS (33-7222) (18-2-0,95) of CAT IN A HAT fought URG GUTSPILLER (59-2561)
(21-10-1,74) of VILE REAVERS. LIONESS overpowered URG GUTSPILLER in a 1 minute
uneven fight. And it was, I suppose, Urg's guts that were making such a mess of the
sands?
WRETCHEDMISERY (33-7255) (29-21-0,112) of CHAOTICDISORDER fought IMPRISONED SPY
(106-9) (0-0-0,170) of the College of Mimes. WRETCHEDMISERY handily defeated
IMPRISONED SPY in a 1 minute one-sided duel. Thus spreading the misery around where
it will do the most... good.
ZEBRA HAMMER (39-3170) (22-10-0,124) of JUNGLE HAMMERZ fought HUNGRY BONES (31-
4720) (18-9-1,100) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS. ZEBRA HAMMER was overpowered by HUNGRY BONES
in a 1 minute one-sided fray. A horrifying concept. A zebra-striped hammer could
make people amazingly dizzy if one were to start swinging it around. At least it
isn't leopard-spotted.
SNOWFALL (45-3473) (43-30-0,117) of NORTHERN LIGHTS fought DEMONICHELLION (33-
7038) (28-24-2,150) of CHAOTICDISORDER. SNOWFALL demolished DEMONICHELLION in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided melee. Now there is an upset victory, and it's the
bookies who are the most upset about it.
SHARD (45-3507) (27-36-1,146) of NORTHERN LIGHTS fought CHAOS WARRIOR (8-1779)
(31-22-0,92) of CHAMPIONS OF STEEL. SHARD was narrowly defeated by CHAOS WARRIOR in
a popular 2 minute gory duel. Chaotic steel strikes? Hmm, how would you know where
to place your shield to ward it off? Tricky.
WILD CARD HAMMER (33-6864) (26-18-2,129) of CASINO HAMMERZ fought DIAMOND (82-
33259) (9-2-0,134) of DARK TOADS 05D. WILD CARD HAMMER was overpowered by DIAMOND in
a 1 minute one-sided duel. These dark toads are no picnic. Which is why people have
developed toadkiller dogs, I suppose?
TEMUJIN (65-3796) (29-11-0,139) of SPLIT INFINITY 2 fought QUEEN AMAZONIA (12-
4796) (46-66-1,137) of DARKMOON. TEMUJIN defeated QUEEN AMAZONIA in a popular 3
minute match. Not the act of a gentleman, but I have wondered more than once about
the concept of "gentleman." It sounds so... Andorian. What's the point in having an
advantage if you don't pursue it?
BRIARTHORN (12-5671) (39-33-2,169) of DARKMOON fought TIGER SHARK HAMMER (49-
3190) (20-10-2,116) of FISH HAMMERZ. BRIARTHORN handily defeated TIGER SHARK HAMMER
in a 1 minute uneven duel. Shark steaks, anyone?
BEARNICE (47-2847) (26-32-6,159) of THE BEAR'S PAW fought ARTEMISIA (12-5096)
(43-45-0,180) of DARKMOON. BEARNICE lost to ARTEMISIA in a popular 3 minute match.
The value of experience, no doubt. It has to be good for something. I suppose.
RAUNI (31-5035) (35-22-0,206) of SOL INVICTUS fought AMPLITUR (65-6440) (21-5-
1,165) of DARK TOADS. RAUNI was devastated by AMPLITUR in a 2 minute gory one-sided
contest. Gad, the toads are everywhere! Good business opportunity for a wart-cure
specialist.
WINSTON (75-2600) (51-35-0,192) of DARK TOADS fought CANNONBALL (72-5313) (24-
22-1,187) of X-POSSE. WINSTON luckily beat CANNONBALL in a popular 7 minute bloody
match. Well... I can see why the sand-rakers were rooting for Winston. Imagine what
a mess you'd have if a toad was splattered by a cannonball. You think I go on about
this stuff too much? YOU try saying something about each of thirty-six fights, over
and over again, eh. A spy reporter's life is not all champagne and fish-eggs.
BRAND (82-13289) (38-30-1,203) of TOADS OF AMBER III fought KING UVDAHELL (47-
1643) (47-23-1,203) of ROYAL FLUSH. BRAND beat KING UVDAHELL in an exciting 1 minute
match. It's amazing. For months, we haven't seen a toad anywhere, and then they
spring up and start beating people right and left.
LITTLE SIR GRUNGE (25-948) (76-60-4,190) of CRYPTICS fought VALLANT (38-4151)
(53-30-2,199) of DARK TOADS. LITTLE SIR GRUNGE was viciously subdued by VALLANT in a
crowd pleasing 2 minute brawl. This one... not really a problem. If the Grungy one
had warts, who could tell?
BOARISH YELTSIN (5-3109) (60-43-2,234) of PARTY ANIMALS fought SPATHA (31-4996)
(37-29-2,204) of SOL INVICTUS. BOARISH YELTSIN overpowered SPATHA in an action
packed 1 minute brutal uneven struggle. Trust the Party Animals to come out of the
Solstice celebrations still on their feet. I believe others found themselves
seriously hung-over.
PRINCE APPLE (47-325) (99-69-2,373) of ROYAL FLUSH fought BEAR ACUDA (47-4995)
(26-18-1,186) of THE BEAR'S PAW. PRINCE APPLE handily defeated BEAR ACUDA in a 2
minute uneven fight. An apple a day sends you to the doctor? Somehow that doesn't
have the right ring to it.
MATADOR (11-4139) (58-51-3,211) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS fought MORTICIAN (2-3890)
(72-18-1,205) of DARK TOADS. MATADOR was savagely defeated by MORTICIAN in a popular
7 minute bloody brawl. Ah, yes, I can remember the days when Mortician was an
Intimidator. And that many of his opponents back them thought him a toad, as well.
THE WHEAT KING (58-5407) (71-55-2,224) of AUTUMN LIGHTNING fought NEWT GINGRICH
(5-3399) (80-26-0,201) of PARTY ANIMALS. THE WHEAT KING was demolished by NEWT
GINGRICH in a 2 minute mismatched competition. Newts eat wheat? This is news to me.
I thought they ate, well, flies or something.
EVE (72-4596) (22-9-0,219) of DARQUE FORCES fought GRINNON BEARIT (47-2955) (39-
27-3,221) of THE BEAR'S PAW. EVE was overpowered by GRINNON BEARIT in a 1 minute
one-sided fight. And a terrible, toothy grin that Bearit has, too.
Ah, the challenge matches!
ANGELOST (39-3415) (19-11-1,87) of DARQUE ANGELS challenged ELLITA FESS (50-
3392) (32-31-1,100) of MIDDLE WAY 6. Up 13. ANGELOST defeated ELLITA FESS in an
action packed 2 minute Challenge match. Can anybody be truly surprised by this?
TOM SAWYER (8-4281) (20-7-0,98) of SMITHSONIAN challenged GILIA HARN (50-3391)
(30-34-0,114) of MIDDLE WAY 6. Up 16. TOM SAWYER was savagely defeated by GILIA
HARN in a 2 minute Challenge duel. Poor Tom, a one-trick pony, as they say. If he
can't get you to paint his fence, he's at a loss.
SCORPIUS (45-3752) (30-13-0,134) of KNIGHT BREED challenged SOUL SCOURGE (59-
2589) (28-9-0,180) of VILE REAVERS. Up some fantastic amount. 46. SCORPIUS lost to
SOUL SCOURGE in a 2 minute Challenge duel. One soul, thoroughly scourged.
ZIT (8-4385) (22-3-0,123) of Z GLADIATORZ challenged PIXIE BLIGHT (73-4427) (25-
24-0,135) of DARQUE FORCES VIII. Up 12. ZIT overcame PIXIE BLIGHT in an action
packed 2 minute Challenge melee. Blights come in all forms.
BLUE VELVET (11-6248) (25-9-0,118) of COLORIFIC challenged BALDER (28-3778) (24-
20-3,127) of VALHALLA. Up 9. BLUE VELVET beat BALDER in a crowd pleasing 3 minute
gory Challenge brawl. If one must be defeated, at least velvet is soft.
RANDOM MATCHUP (96-1048) (27-12-4,193) of OVERRATED challenged SODOM (31-4368)
(31-14-1,207) of DARQUE FORCES. Up 14. RANDOM MATCHUP defeated SODOM in a 2 minute
Challenge struggle. It seems a defiance of terminology for Random to issue a
challenge, but there it is.
STIGMA OF STUPID (31-4948) (29-13-1,194) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS challenged AGLIBOL
(12-5848) (37-27-1,193) of DARKMOON. Down 1. STIGMA OF STUPID was luckily beaten by
AGLIBOL in a 2 minute Challenge competition. No, I just won't have this. Luck? No.
More like skill.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (103-66-2,225) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged SIDON (31-3712)
(41-26-2,231) of DARQUE FORCES. Up 6. JACK VALTRAEDS bested SIDON in a popular 4
minute gory Challenge contest. Odd how it means exactly the same thing in such a
context to say that Jack bested Sidon or worsted him. There's probably some deep
philosophical concept hidden in there.
WHACKING WILLOW (52-3167) (37-9-1,236) of FLOWER GIRLS challenged FOUNTAIN TROLL
(73-643) (78-26-2,273) of D.A. REJECTS. Up 37 or so. WHACKING WILLOW was demolished
by FOUNTAIN TROLL in a 4 minute Challenge melee. As Willow should have expected.
Trolls are serious business.
And for the title, if I have correctly interpreted Olaf's confused notes:
TOADKILLER DOG (47-1103) (31-10-1,259) of WASTED SCUM challenged DUTCH TREAT (26-
1841) (96-35-2,338) of WORLDWIDE GORE. Up lots. About 79, I think. TOADKILLER DOG
was viciously subdued by DUTCH TREAT in a 24 minute Challenge fight. Oh, dear. I
fear the Dog may have been exhausted by the effort of producing the column? Of
course, a twenty-four minute fight is enough to exhaust anybody. Congratulations to
you both for whatever you feel you've done to earn it.

ANNOUNCING THE NO-TOURNAMENT ARENA (81)
As an American I honor my cultural heritage by stealing any good idea. This idea was
originally proposed by Lord Xiang in November 2005. RSI will be opening the arena
(81) for teams willing to sign the following pledge:
* I pledge that I will not send warriors from this arena to a Tournament, nor will I
use a Tournament prize on a warrior from this arena.
* I pledge to run a full team when I run turns in this arena. If circumstances
preclude my running less than a full team I will notify the Player Committee.
* I agree to abide by the decisions of the Player Committee.
* I understand that any warrior that participates in a Tournament shall be sent to
the Dark Arena until they are dead.
* I understand that any warrior that receives a Tournament prize shall be send to
the Dark Arena until they are dead.
The following are the rules for joining this No-Tournament arena
1. No tournament play for warriors in this arena (Dead tournament or otherwise).
2. One team per manager.
3. Teams start with new rollup (or a zero fight equivalent team is transferred into
this arena.)
4. No tourney prizes allowed to modify warriors in the arena.
5. Twenty teams required, per RSI.
6. Waivers are required to allow self-regulation on tourney ban, granting RSI
authority to Dark Arena any warrior that participates in a Tournament (until the
warrior is dead).
7. Rotating council to enforce tourney ban and maintain arena integrity.
The main purpose of the Player Committee is to maintain fair play in the arena:
* Warriors that participate in Tournaments will be sent to the Dark Arena until they
are dead. This means that the Player Committee has the power to send another
player's warrior to the Dark Arena
* Managers that abuse the rules of the Arena may be banned/transferred from the
Arena.
The player with the most votes for Chairman will fill slot 1 [Chairperson] and that
term expires end of March 2007.
The player with the most votes overall will fill slot 5 and that term expires end of
November 2007.
The player with the second most votes overall will fill slot 4 and that term expires
end of September 2007.
The player with the third most votes overall will fill slot 3 and that term expires
end of November 2007.
The player with the fourth most votes overall will fill slot 2 and that term expires
end of May 2007.
During the month that the chairperson's term expires the Player Committee will select
one of the remaining 4 players to be the next chairperson. During the month that any
member's term expires the arena will vote for a different player to join the Players'
Committee.

The Honor of Sunset Award:
The first team to reach 10 Team Kills. In the case that there is more than one
team that achieves 10 Team Kills on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the team
with the most kills. If two or more teams are tied for Team Kills, I will prolong
the contest until one team has the most Kills in the Arena (it does not have to be
one of the teams that first reached 10 Team Kills.)
The Race to Victory Award:
The first team to reach 75 Team Wins. In the case that there is more than one
team that reaches 75 Team wins on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the team
with the most wins. If two or more teams are tied for Team Wins, I will prolong the
contest until one team has the most wins in the Arena (it does not have to be one of
the teams that first reached 75 Team Wins.)
The Commitment to Change Award:
The first team to reach 125 Team Fights. In the case that there is more than
one team that reaches 125 Team Fights on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the
team with the most fights. If two or more teams are tied for Team Fights, I will
prolong the contest until one team has the most fights in the Arena (it does not have
to be one of the teams that first reached 125 Team Fights.) I hope I never give out
this award {figure it out on your own.}
The Team Advancement Award:
The first team to graduate 5 warriors to ADM. In the case that there is more
than 1 team that graduates 5 warriors on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the
first team to graduate 6 warriors. In the case that there is more than 1 team that
graduates 6 warriors on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the first team to
graduate 7 warriors, and so on.
The Iron Throne Award:
The first team to hold the Duelmaster for 10 turns STARTING ON TURN 11.
The Stylemaster Award.
The first team to hold the Stylemaster Award in 7 different styles, STARTING ON
TURN 11. If two teams obtain Stylemaster Awards in 7 styles on the same turn, the
goal will be increased to 8 Styles.
Team Recognition Points: The total recognition points for all warriors in the arena
The Iron Throne Ledger: We will track who has been the Duelmaster every turn in
Arena history.
Iron Throne Counter: The total number of times a team has been the Duelmaster.
Composite Team Stylemaster awards: The number of times a team has had any of the 10
Stylemasters. Having 2 Stylemasters = 2 points that turn.
Challenge win percentage: How often your warriors win when they challenge.
Challenge Defender rate: How often your warriors win when they WERE challenged.
Team Invitations: Number of warriors graduated to ADM.
Team Graduation Rate: Total team fights/Graduated Warriors.
Team Kill Percentage: Total of team Kills/Team Fights
Team Death Percentage: Total of Team Deaths/Team Fights
Team Revenge Rate: Number of Deaths/BloodFeuds Revenged (Note that the Dark Arena
will be counted as not-revenged.) You only get credit for one successful
BloodFeud per death (though I encourage you to BloodFeud all 4 turns.)
Current Win Streaks: Warriors that have gone the most turns without losing or
missing a turn.
Team Yahtzee counter: Number of times a team has gone 5-0 in a turn.
Team Bagel counter: Number of times a team has fought without a win.
Team Dark Arena counter: Number of times each team has used the Dark Arena.
The Most Feared (avoided) Team counter: Number of turns that team was the most
avoided team.
