"It's infamous!" Ardane, spy reporter for Andorak, scowled and drew back his
arm to throw his goblet through the window at the crowd outside. Then paused to
drain the contents before resuming the about-to-throw-it position.
"Now, now, it isn't THAT bad." Desiree of Darkholm, always the voice of sweet
reason at these meetings, laid a hand on his, smiled, and guided the goblet back to
the table. "It's just a little mistake, you know."
"Ha!" Debby Tonte of Free Blades stabbed viciously into her drink with an
umbrella. "That's easy for YOU to say. The Delarquans aren't complaining."
"Of course not." Galen of Talahya looked faintly envious as she pulled a chunk
of pineapple out of her glass and began to nibble it. "That's because the Delarquans
are THE Masters of Kung-Fu."
"You think some managers are complaining," Olaf Modeen said, "you should hear
what the GLADIATORS are saying. All these rumors about the Aimed Blows having
'special enhancements'..." he shook his head. "I know it isn't true, you know it
isn't true, the top managers know it isn't true--"
"Of course it isn't true!" Ketchum, spy reporter for Crysalis, matched scowls
with Ardane and said, "If ANY one style was going to get a special enhancement, it
should be--"
"Not now, Ketch," Olaf said. "Nobody gets, nobody has gotten, nobody WILL get,
special enhancements. That's always been the rule, and we all know how the Greywand
hates changes. The real problem--"
"Try telling that to some of the managers," Debby muttered, peering into her
glass for more fruit. "They don't want to hear it. Every time I turn around, some
manager is claiming that someone got a special change and, you know, HE didn't and
it's all unfair."
"The REAL problem," Olaf said firmly, over-riding her voice, "is explaining to
all the second-rate Aimed Blows why they haven't received any of these 'special
enhancements' they keep hearing about."
"There aren't any special enhancements," Ardane growled. "None. Just managers
who noticed that the Kung-Fu Master is a lot more dangerous than anyone expected, and
have put YEARS into the study of Kung-Fu and learned how to really USE it for their
own gladiators."
"Saved a lot on weapons, too," Ketchum murmured.
"But people keep complaining," Debby Tonte said. She fished one last piece of
fruit out of her glass and stared at it dubiously.
"There WERE no special enhancements," Olaf said. "There ARE no special
enhancements. There WILL BE no special enhancements. It's all a matter of deep
study and skilled management."
"Like anyone's going to believe that!"
"They have no choice," Ketchum said. "If no 'special enhancements' were given
out, then none can be taken back. It is the way it is. What's the point in
complaining because the sun rises in the east?"
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Twelve standbys? TWELVE? I was noting with pleasure the large number of fights
here (much better than, for example, Andorak: forty-nine fights here compared to a
mere twenty-one in Andorak, just as an example), when I realized with shock and
annoyance that TWELVE of our fights involved standbys! Of course, Andorak had eight,
but still, in EITHER case this is ridiculous. I look for better from the managers of
Crysalis, who are fortunate in having a little TIME to think over their strategic
plans for each cycle. So, let us see no standbys on the sands NEXT time.
As to what we see this time: One Good Dude was Most Avoided by Royal Flush.
Mad Cat received the most challenges (oddly enough, more challenges than our
unchallenged "duelmaster"). Madness, I have no doubt.
So, the fights.
LOSING IS FUN (12-6330) (20-12-0,75) of WHO DA MAN? fought FROSTFLARE (45-4112)
(19-16-1,64) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. LOSING IS FUN murdered FROSTFLARE in a 1 minute
gory mismatched contest. I have a feeling that Losing will not have made his/her/its
point with Frostflare. Say what you will about guaranteed resurrection (and if you
think it IS guaranteed, I advise you to check your contracts for small print), dying
is not fun.
WHITE SETTLER (47-5322) (23-13-1,78) of NATURAL B. KILLERS 2 fought SUNFLASH
(45-3474) (31-46-1,54) of NORTHERN LIGHTS. WHITE SETTLER defeated SUNFLASH in an
exciting 1 minute brawl. I didn't find it terribly exciting, myself, but then, I
wasn't down there. White and Sunflash may have been as excited as anyone could have
wished for.
FRED BEAR (47-5348) (18-11-0,65) of THE BEAR'S PAW fought LADY CONSOLACION (28-
3703) (22-30-2,36) of FILIPINA LADYZ. FRED BEAR devastated LADY CONSOLACION in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided battle. By all the gods, this appears to be a
CLASSIC case of "mis-matched" and "one-sided"! What is our handicapper THINKING?
FENDER GRALE (50-3389) (22-40-2,72) of MIDDLE WAY 6 fought BLACK FLAG (82-46046)
(19-11-3,83) of TONGUE N CHEEK. FENDER GRALE was devastated by BLACK FLAG in a 2
minute one-sided conflict. Nothing like a little anti-golem spray.
LITTLE DEVIL (14-4359) (17-14-0,59) of PLAYPEN fought LADY DOMINGA (28-3702)
(17-35-0,46) of FILIPINA LADYZ. LITTLE DEVIL was defeated by LADY DOMINGA in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute bout. Does this mean that Little has a weakness for the
admonishment of ladyz?
HOLLAN INNIS (50-3388) (30-31-0,100) of MIDDLE WAY 6 fought SIPPYCUP SAM (14-
4280) (17-14-3,75) of PLAYPEN. HOLLAN INNIS handily defeated SIPPYCUP SAM in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided bout. More mis-matching. In fact, there's a lot of this
going around. You may have noticed.
ABHORRENCE (4-5568) (18-7-2,138) of GLOOM AND DOOM fought UNCERTAIN OMELET (47-
3786) (18-8-0,116) of MYSTIC ORC FEAST. ABHORRENCE slimly lost to UNCERTAIN OMELET
in an exciting 5 minute brutal duel. What you need to ask yourself here is, "Why was
this omelet uncertain?" Has it been sitting around on the back of the stove for so
long that it's turned to leather? Or are the eggs of dubious age? It could make a
difference. In one case, you have shoe soles, and in the other case, a real mess to
clean up.
DAIRY QUEEN (47-2685) (73-42-3,180) of ROYAL FLUSH fought VILLAINOUS INFORMER
(106-23) (0-0-0,181) of Monsters from Behind. DAIRY QUEEN beat VILLAINOUS INFORMER
in a popular 2 minute fray. I don't know what the deal is with these "Monsters," but
obviously Dairy is queen for a reason, and more power to her!
OUR LADY PEACE (79-1191) (25-10-2,180) of CHAPEL ROCK fought RIRORNI COOK (106-
24) (0-0-0,181) of Monsters from Behind. OUR LADY PEACE overpowered RIRORNI COOK in
an action packed 1 minute one-sided battle. Ah, perhaps it was the Rirorni Cook who
served the uncertain omelet. That could explain much. They've never forgiven us for
winning that war, you know.
BASE ON BULLS (73-3101) (25-7-4,164) of THE BULLS fought BALDER (28-3778) (26-
22-3,138) of VALHALLA. BASE ON BULLS was viciously subdued by BALDER in an exciting
2 minute brutal conflict. The crowds (at least, those members who aren't sure-thing
bettors) are always thrilled by what they see as an "underdog victory." Not that I
want you to think of Balder as a dog! Far from it.
KING FORADAY (47-3762) (54-48-4,177) of ROYAL FLUSH fought FLOYD (106-10) (0-0-
0,150) of Monsters from Behind. KING FORADAY handily defeated FLOYD in an exciting 1
minute bloody mismatched fight. It would appear that Floyd, or possibly a Monster
masquerading as Floyd, will NOT be king for this day. Good to know.
MATADOR (11-4139) (60-53-3,199) of ANDORIAN KNIGHTS fought PERFECT TEN (47-4218)
(33-27-1,179) of ROYAL FLUSH. MATADOR viciously subdued PERFECT TEN in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute gruesome match. Why is this not a surprise?
F.O.A.D. (73-442) (31-13-2,203) of ALPHABET SOUP fought FREAK (18-7300) (28-15-
4,169) of RUN AND HYDE. F.O.A.D. overpowered FREAK in an action packed 1 minute
gruesome one-sided fight. People have told Freak more than once that there IS value
in learning to read, or at least to recognize the letters of the alphabet, but will
he listen? In the immortal words of Debby Tonte, As if!
BURGER KING (47-4152) (40-34-3,190) of ROYAL FLUSH fought THE BLACKSMITH (106-
22) (0-0-0,181) of Monsters from Behind. BURGER KING viciously subdued THE
BLACKSMITH in a crowd pleasing 2 minute match. I think it was probably the onions.
Unless there was a Special Sauce. Always tricky, those Special Sauces, but onions, I
assure you, are Worse.
TEN COMMANDMENTS (47-3843) (48-42-1,194) of ROYAL FLUSH fought AKELDAMA (56-
2417) (22-8-0,189) of ACT OF MALICE. TEN COMMANDMENTS was overpowered by AKELDAMA in
a popular 1 minute uneven bout. Some people just don't take commandments well, and
clearly Akeldama is one of them.
JACK SPRAT (47-2954) (58-64-4,206) of ROYAL FLUSH fought CRYSALIS GUARD (106-29)
(0-0-0,200) of Monsters from Behind. JACK SPRAT savagely defeated CRYSALIS GUARD in
an exciting 5 minute gruesome conflict. Well... it SAYS "exciting," but I didn't
feel the thrill, myself. Not after the second minute, anyway.
GROLSCH (21-5029) (46-10-4,185) of REAL BEER fought WEINERMUN (37-2635) (56-49-
3,198) of ALL THE MUN'S MEN. GROLSCH beat WEINERMUN in a popular 3 minute brutal
fray. It was probably the bun.
DISCO QUEEN (47-1992) (43-23-1,192) of ROYAL FLUSH fought BEARNICE (47-2847)
(27-35-7,161) of THE BEAR'S PAW. DISCO QUEEN subdued BEARNICE in a crowd pleasing 3
minute match. All those flashing mirrors, very distracting.

(106-11) (0-0-0,220) of Monsters from Behind. KING UVDAHELL demolished AMBER
WOLFWALKER in a popular 1 minute bloody uneven contest. I still don't understand
where these Monsters came from (behind WHAT?), but we're doing better against them
than the Andorians, so I guess it's okay.

(0-0-0,181) of Monsters from Behind. FIGHTER ACE overpowered RIRORNI COOK in a 1
minute uneven bout. Wait a minute, haven't we had the Rirorni Cook already? Are you
telling me there are TWO cooks?
TOADKILLER DOG (47-1103) (32-13-1,210) of WASTED SCUM fought BEERVAHNA (60-4292)
(33-31-3,194) of INGRATE WHITE NORTH. TOADKILLER DOG defeated BEERVAHNA in a 2
minute bout. But since Beervahna lives, we must assume that Beervhana is not, in
fact, a toad.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (105-67-2,196) of ROYAL FLUSH fought THE BLACKSMITH
(106-22) (0-0-0,181) of Monsters from Behind. JACK VALTRAEDS savagely defeated THE
BLACKSMITH in an exciting 4 minute gory match. And the Blacksmith has been out
before, too! This is indeed Monstrous!

(106-11) (0-0-0,220) of Monsters from Behind. LITTLE SIR GRUNGE savagely defeated
AMBER WOLFWALKER in a 3 minute fight. Another repeat. Very odd. It isn't like we
don't HAVE twelve different standbys to be called out.
BALCLUTHA (14-3169) (31-39-1,212) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought STEVE MCQUEEN (47-
3908) (45-41-1,198) of ROYAL FLUSH. BALCLUTHA was beaten by STEVE MCQUEEN in an
action packed 4 minute brutal competition. Ah... do you know, I can't think of
anything to say about this? Disconcerting.

So, are we to understand that these standbys are POSSESSED by monsters, or that they
are monstrous, or is it that these are the only standbys NOT possessed by Monsters?
Inquiring minds are very confused here.
