Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
What a fight last turn, toe to toe for 6 rounds with a great one! One of the
better duels Crysalis has seen in ages. But it is now that time of year when Primus
beckons, and it is quite likely that this time around, we will be losing a few
warriors to the great beyond. Crip thinks that I am 99.9% likely to receive an
invite as my training over the past 6 months has really been quite spectacular. Here
I am, the top Total parry in the land, and to add to that, I'm probably 1 or 2 skills
from a Grandmaster rating in... no, not parry, but attack.... Go figure.
It's unlikely that any of Crip's other Crap will be forced to Primus, but the more
likely candidates are the Party Animals Newt Gingrich and Boarish Yeltsin, popularity
leader Jack Valtraeds, and the temporarily retired Little Sir Grunge.
However, we also think there are other candidates out there with a likelihood of
being called for their final dance. We foresee:
Balclutha
Mortician
Mad Cat
Crumbsnatcher
and Maybe Brand, though we don't really have much of a scouting report on this last
one.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
For some reason, possibly connected with reality, I feel my life has been thrown
off schedule, even seriously disrupted of late. It must be the change in weather.
Definitely nippy this morning. Yes, that's it, the colder weather. Because it
couldn't be that I'm getting OLD or such nonsense!
All of which is beside the point. The point is: dueling.
Unfit to Be Orcs were avoided by Royal Flush. The Royal Flush has standards,
after all. Get some FIT orcs out there, and you'll probably find yourself beating
the Flushers off with sticks. That wasn't all the avoiding going on, but it was a
plurality.
Balclutha got the most challenges, a dubious honor but his own.
We had thirty-two fights involving three standbys. Eleven challenge matches,
none of them TV. Nobody died.
Three fights tied for longest at a mere eight minutes each. Look lazy, you
gladiators! This is a SLOW arena, after all!
The specifics:
TWINK (5-4396) (19-9-2,81) of PAPER MARIO fought EPIMONIDAS (4-5683) (20-22-
0,63) of DOGS OF WAR. TWINK overpowered EPIMONIDAS in a 1 minute one-sided match.
This Twinkie is clearly out to cut a wide swath. That's what happens when people
make hay while the sun shines, I believe. They cut wide swaths. Some of them.
LITTLE DEVIL (14-4359) (18-19-0,54) of PLAYPEN fought SHERMAN (4-5391) (17-14-
1,58) of DOGS OF WAR. LITTLE DEVIL demolished SHERMAN in an action packed 1 minute
one-sided struggle. Why, that little devil! I suspect that Sherman is fit to be
tied, and at the least should have a sock stuffed into his mouth. Such language!
ROXANNE DE'MORRE (50-3449) (26-23-0,72) of DRUID'S GROVE fought LADY DOMINGA
(28-3702) (19-39-0,78) of FILIPINA LADYZ. ROXANNE DE'MORRE viciously subdued LADY
DOMINGA in a crowd pleasing 3 minute fight. From which it would appear that Roxanne
is no lady! Or do ladies fight among themselves?
BLACK FLAG (82-46046) (23-13-3,84) of TONGUE N CHEEK fought VIOLET VULTURE (11-
6612) (21-4-0,67) of ANIMAL FARM. BLACK FLAG was outwaited by VIOLET VULTURE in a
crowd pleasing 8 minute match. One of the longest fights today. I'm told that
Violet was waiting for her nail polish to dry before striking the definitive pose,
er, blow. Quite a ravishing shade of purple it is, too.
SIPPYCUP SAM (14-4280) (20-17-3,99) of PLAYPEN fought PERICLES (4-5531) (23-26-
2,70) of DOGS OF WAR. SIPPYCUP SAM overpowered PERICLES in a 1 minute one-sided
bout. I knew these Dogs were making a mistake to go active. They knew it, too,
according to a private conversation I had with Epimonidas yesterday. (Nothing is
private if you're talking to a spy reporter.) Apparently it was some kind of special
arrangement in which the other part has since reneged. This is life.
MOSGIEL (14-3836) (27-14-1,99) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought LYSISTRATA (4-5389)
(24-11-2,73) of DOGS OF WAR. MOSGIEL overpowered LYSISTRATA in a 1 minute gory one-
sided match. The orderlies tell me (remember, nothing is private to a spy reporter!)
that Mosgiel was "gallant" in the Infirmary afterward. Is this the start of a
beautiful relationship?
ADAM'S APPLE (52-3203) (24-12-0,123) of OTTO'S PARTS fought CHEATING MANAGER
(106-6) (0-0-0,130) of the College of Mimes. ADAM'S APPLE overpowered CHEATING
MANAGER in an action packed 1 minute uneven fight. Always popular with the
gladiators, defeating the Cheating Manager. They tell me the cheers could be heard
all the way to the Infirmary.
LOOGIE CLAP (82-46049) (24-13-2,105) of TONGUE N CHEEK fought GENERAL PUBLIC
(31-3112) (20-20-1,128) of MILITARY MAYHEM. LOOGIE CLAP was overpowered by GENERAL
PUBLIC in a 1 minute uneven competition. This was probably a good thing, but I can't
say that I actually warm to the Great Unwashed. We don't let any general public make
decisions back home in Osksi, I can tell you that!
BLUE BLOOD (73-3657) (19-10-1,125) of BLACK & BLUE fought JIMMY CUSTER (4-6268)
(23-27-2,91) of DOGS OF WAR. BLUE BLOOD overpowered JIMMY CUSTER in a popular 1
minute gruesome uneven duel. It will be interesting to hear Jimmy's explanation for
this debacle in the personals next time.
HARI-KARI (73-3049) (16-4-0,156) of WAY TO GO! II fought BEARNICE (47-2847) (29-
39-7,122) of THE BEAR'S PAW. HARI-KARI was savagely defeated by BEARNICE in a 2
minute gruesome match. Never forget it that bears are, at heart, savage beasts. It
is their inescapable nature.
DUNEDIN (14-3703) (32-49-0,190) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought SOUL SCOURGE (59-
2589) (32-14-0,186) of VILE REAVERS. DUNEDIN was outlasted by SOUL SCOURGE in a
popular 8 minute duel. Another of the tied-for-longest fights. Soul Scourge spent
the whole eight minutes making truly vile puns. Most of them won't bear repeating,
and there's no room for the rest.
WEINERMUN (37-2635) (57-54-3,196) of ALL THE MUN'S MEN fought BODDINGTON'S (21-
5035) (23-13-0,164) of REAL BEER. WEINERMUN was overpowered by BODDINGTON'S in an
exciting 1 minute uneven fight. I never thought of soaking a sausage in beer.
Sounds grotesque. Probably tastes that way, too. But some people have grotesque
tastes, so who knows, it's probably done somewhere.
BRIARTHORN (12-5671) (42-39-2,203) of DARKMOON fought HUNGRY BONES (31-4720)
(23-14-1,152) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS. BRIARTHORN was overcome by HUNGRY BONES in a
popular 3 minute brutal contest. I believe I saw a note somewhere to the effect that
Hungry got the biggest recognition point increase of the day for this victory. But
no dinner. No wonder the bones are hungry!
STIGMA OF STUPID (31-4948) (35-17-1,214) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS fought DAIRY QUEEN
(47-2685) (76-43-3,195) of ROYAL FLUSH. STIGMA OF STUPID vanquished DAIRY QUEEN in
an action packed 1 minute one-sided match. It doesn't take intelligence to vanquish
a dairy queen, just a fast tongue. Ah, for licking up the ice cream. Delicious.
MAD CAT (7-2965) (57-37-6,237) of INSP GADGETS MINIONS fought BEAR ACUDA (47-
4995) (31-23-1,206) of THE BEAR'S PAW. MAD CAT viciously subdued BEAR ACUDA in a
popular 3 minute gory contest. Better watch out, Mad Cat, or someone may send the
Bear's MAW after you! Very dangerous, the Bear's maw. A nasty old woman. A real
battleaxe.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (108-68-2,218) of ROYAL FLUSH fought RIRORNI COOK (106-
24) (0-0-0,181) of the College of Mimes. JACK VALTRAEDS overpowered RIRORNI COOK in
a popular 2 minute bloody one-sided bout. I know his cooking is bad, Jack, but do
you really think it will improve simply because you smacked him upside the head a few
times?
TOADKILLER DOG (47-1103) (35-16-1,211) of WASTED SCUM fought GRINNON BEARIT (47-
2955) (45-31-4,195) of THE BEAR'S PAW. TOADKILLER DOG was viciously subdued by
GRINNON BEARIT in an exciting 3 minute fight. Bears, savage bears. Even the best of
amphibicidal dogs can't match 'em.
FIGHTER ACE (47-1189) (70-47-6,239) of ROYAL FLUSH fought WHEEL OF FORTUNE (25-
2529) (50-47-2,204) of DUELING FOR DOLLARS. FIGHTER ACE beat WHEEL OF FORTUNE in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute brawl. I take it this means the Ace gets all the dollars.
Will you tithe to the spy reporter, Ace?
DUTCH TREAT (26-1841) (101-36-2,223) of WORLDWIDE GORE fought VERMICIOUS KNID
(106-30) (0-0-0,240) of the College of Mimes. DUTCH TREAT savagely defeated
VERMICIOUS KNID in an action packed 7 minute struggle. It isn't often you see an
evil Knid beaten down with tulips. It isn't often you see a tulip hold up under that
task for seven minutes, but this is clearly an amazing breed.
NEWT GINGRICH (5-3399) (85-28-0,225) of PARTY ANIMALS fought SPATHA (31-4996)
(40-35-2,192) of SOL INVICTUS. NEWT GINGRICH handily defeated SPATHA in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided conflict. I'm sure we all congratulate the Newt here, but
if it means he will have to go off to party hearty in Primus, well, I suppose we
could have a seeing-him-off party here first.
BOARISH YELTSIN (5-3109) (67-43-2,353) of PARTY ANIMALS fought THE WHEAT KING
(58-5407) (75-59-2,195) of AUTUMN LIGHTNING. BOARISH YELTSIN devastated THE WHEAT
KING in a 2 minute one-sided battle. This wheat seems to have been reaped.
Ah, the challenges:
CUBA (26-3917) (24-10-0,94) of HERE TO PHOENIX challenged LADY CONSOLACION (28-
3703) (25-33-3,100) of FILIPINA LADYZ. Up 6. CUBA subdued LADY CONSOLACION in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge competition. Our announcer needs to take the
potato out of his mouth before speaking. I thought he said "Tuba." You know, the
very large horn that goes "oompah." Which would have explained Lady C's choice of a
piccolo.
TINY TIM (60-6042) (24-7-1,128) of CRAZY CREEPS challenged URG GUTSPILLER (59-
2561) (26-14-1,141) of VILE REAVERS. Up 33. TINY TIM overcame URG GUTSPILLER in a
popular 5 minute brutal Challenge bout. Crazy creep! After Tim won the match, the
arenamaster had to step in to prevent him from harvesting guts "to string his
ukelele." I think myself that he wanted 'em for souvenirs.
HORAGALLES (31-5212) (21-17-2,110) of SOL INVICTUS challenged ZIT (8-4385) (25-
3-0,143) of Z GLADIATORZ. Up 33. HORAGALLES was vanquished by ZIT in an exciting 4
minute one-sided Challenge fight. Not really a surprising outcome. One hopes, in an
academic way, that the skills were plentiful for Horagalles.
TAOS (26-4042) (21-12-1,151) of HERE TO PHOENIX challenged WRETCHEDMISERY (33-
7255) (35-24-0,176) of CHAOTICDISORDER. Up 25. TAOS slimly won victory over
WRETCHEDMISERY in a 2 minute Challenge fight. It's the cold, that would make anyone
wretched and miserable. Except Taos, of course, Taos is used to the cold. Which
just goes to show how peculiar Taos is; men, and also women, were not meant to be
cold, or we'd have fur.
DIAMOND (82-33259) (12-2-0,173) of DARK TOADS 05D challenged AGLIBOL (12-5848)
(39-34-1,198) of DARKMOON. Up 25. DIAMOND overpowered AGLIBOL in an action packed 2
minute uneven Challenge melee. You've heard of "diamond drills"? Now you've seen
one in action.
PHILLIP THE BIRD (40-3708) (17-12-1,186) of CRUEL PET NAMES challenged BALDER
(28-3778) (29-25-3,192) of VALHALLA. Up 6. PHILLIP THE BIRD was devastated by
BALDER in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. In a prepared statement released
before the fight, Balder stated that he "disapproves in principle" of cruelty to
birds. Thus the devastation.
KING FORADAY (47-3762) (56-50-4,195) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged UNCERTAIN OMELET
(47-3786) (21-11-0,199) of MYSTIC ORC FEAST. Up 4. KING FORADAY was viciously
subdued by UNCERTAIN OMELET in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. And one is left to
wonder, uneasily, what will be found in the depths of the next omelet.
WHACKING WILLOW (52-3167) (42-12-1,202) of FLOWER GIRLS challenged CRUMBSNATCHER
(72-1842) (51-32-1,210) of ONE GOOD DUDE. Up 8. WHACKING WILLOW was viciously
subdued by CRUMBSNATCHER in a 2 minute Challenge fight, and she loved every minute of
it. Well, perhaps not. It's hard to tell from the spy reporter's box.
DISCO QUEEN (47-1992) (46-24-1,216) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged PAT (35-2292) (45-
45-2,216) of COMMON JOE'S. Straight across. DISCO QUEEN outlasted PAT in an action
packed 8 minute bloody Challenge fight. Our final longest fight, and Disco danced
the moon down and sun up, as they say. Very impressive, especially with that
glittering, sparkling, flashing, distracting crown.
KING UVDAHELL (47-1643) (51-26-1,213) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged RANDOM MATCHUP
(96-1048) (34-15-4,214) of OVERRATED. Up 1. KING UVDAHELL was subdued by RANDOM
MATCHUP in a 2 minute Challenge melee. There is a certain irony in this.
For the title, disdaining to leave matters in the fumbling fingers of the Match-
Up Gods, FOUNTAIN TROLL (73-643) (85-26-2,393) of D.A. REJECTS challenged BALCLUTHA
(14-3169) (34-42-1,248) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. Down 145 from the throne. FOUNTAIN
TROLL unbelievably bested BALCLUTHA in a 4 minute Challenge Title fight. Why is this
hard to believe? We all saw it (except those who were deep in their tankards at the
time. Congratulations, Troll!

Ok, ok, you can stop not-talking about TOGS VI already, it is coming, slowly but
surely, like a giant, over-fed, greased slug sliding down a gravely driveway. We're
looking for new-comers, old-timers, in-betweeners, fence-sitters and Delarquans to
come on out and participate. Just think, you could be the next Pinky & the Brain
pairing (a la Creepster & Manager), or maybe you'll be the team that crushes all in
its path on the way TO UTTER AND COMPLETE TOGS DOMINATION!!!!!! [note: insert
sinister cackle if it helps you complete the picture]
There will be a few minor changes, so let's recap the rules from top to bottom:
1. Each TOGS team consists of two managers. After the contest starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your teammate wisely. TOGS VI will last
for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so.
2. The TOGS entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per TOGS
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no exceptions
being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or manager decides
to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:

b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards
and no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. TOGS point system:
Fights:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on another TOGS warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random match-up against another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning a random match-up against a non-TOGS warrior.
Changes this TOGS:
** 10 points for any challenge by the DM, UP OR DOWN!!
** 4 points for winning a random match-up against your TOGS partner's warrior.
To state the obvious, there are 0 points if you challenge your partner.
** 4 points for winning a bloodfeud attempt against you by a non-TOGS warrior
You will not get any points if you challenge or get challenged by a non-TOGS team
(with the exception of the above-stated rule if you get bloodfeuded), so use your
avoids wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
Spots/Ads
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member. 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the newsletter
(that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and we will be completely firm on
this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will not be given points if
they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not Duelmasters or fantasy related.
We will be the sole judge of this. If you're unsure if we will judge something to be
Duelmasters or fantasy related, then e-mail me before you write the spotlight and
ask. We reserve the right to take points away from a spotlight after they are given
if we judge at later time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.
4. TOGS VI will start in arena 60 shortly after the Winter Face-to-Face (turn due
Feb 21, Aradi turn 436) and as mentioned before will last for 13 turns. There will
be multipliers in the later rounds, which means that all points accumulated by a team
on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by each team
on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Soultaker and Nuln will be the sole arbiters of any dispute that may arise, with
props to Sentinel for doing the score-keeping as always. Whine all you like, we will
be glad to provide comfortable chairs and the cheese of your choice.
And there be the rules. If you look closely, you'll notice there were a few minor
changes and additions made from the TOGS V rules. They are as follows:
-- The Snotman & Nuln rule: Last TOGS Snotman and Nuln randomly matched up something
like 4-5 times, so we basically decided out of pity to now give a small amount of
points (4 in this case) for winning a random against a teammate, so that you're not
completely screwed by having 2 of your 10 warriors get 0 zero points automatically.
-- Scaling Down Points for the DM: Previously a TOGS DM would get 10 points *in
addition* to whatever challenge points they got. This was to keep the DM from being
penalized for being at the top and give people something to fight for. However, it
was a bit too much of an award and we decided to scale it back and eliminate the
bonus, but give full upchallenge credit whenever the DM challenges.
-- Bloodfeuds from outside TOGS teams: This incident came up last TOGS, and it was
felt that if a person killed a non-TOGS warrior in a random, they shouldn't have to
be potentially locked into 4 turns of getting 0 points. So we've added an additional
rule which now gives 4 points if you win when bloodfeuded by a non-TOGS warrior, at
least giving you some way to get points if you're locked into a non-TOGS bloodfeud
instead of being basically removed from the contest for 4 turns.
And lastly...
-- Team Names: This was not listed in the rules, but to make things more festive, at
the suggestion of Manager we have decided to have the added dimension of team names!
Yes, no more boring rankings with Team 4 edging out Team 7. Just picture reading a
TOGS turn report now, with something along the lines of "Team Fiery Starfish
obliterated Team Superior TOGSlings," just as one example.
