Shucks, a Contender? I'm merely a Pretender in Crysalis, and I now graduate to
Contender. (sigh) This does not bode well.
Many here have wondered what is this godling which has plummeted (Can one
plummet UP?) to the top of Crysalis. All I can say is that I had a humble start in
life at 10-12-5-17-17-12-11. An oaky lunger, wouldn't you say? Even as we speak, I
am not maxed in any stat and far from it in many. (more sighs)

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
This is a terrible day for a fight. The sun is bright, the sky is blue, the
trees are all over flowers, who wants to be standing around in an arena whacking some
inoffensive adversary? How about a picnic after we finish here? A little frisbee on
the beach, a bonfire after dark with sausages on sticks, beer, a musician or two....
But in the meantime, the fights.
Brand lost the title for failure to fight.
Unfit to Be Orcs were avoided by Royal Flush.
Orange Crush probably got the most challenges.
Out of twenty-eight fights, five involved standbys.
There were six challenges completed, none of them TV.
SERB SMASHER (71-1393) (16-9-2,64) of DOGS OF WAR fought ANGEL HAMMER (45-3962)
(16-12-2,62) of MUTANT HAMMERZ. SERB SMASHER overpowered ANGEL HAMMER in a 1 minute
one-sided match. So what was this? A battle of hammers? Or cheese presses, if
certain comments in the personals are to be credited.
ROXANNE DE'MORRE (50-3449) (30-26-0,85) of DRUID'S GROVE fought MAGNETO (34-
1665) (15-16-0,51) of X-MEN. ROXANNE DE'MORRE overpowered MAGNETO in a popular 1
minute uneven duel. Do you suppose there's a clue hidden in that name? "Rocks and
more," indicating weapons preferred?
ABBOTT (14-4131) (18-5-2,61) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought DESPERADO (28-1152)
(26-30-1,75) of DODGE BULLETS. ABBOTT was beaten by DESPERADO in a 1 minute fight.
And a desperate Desperado, at that, attempting to reclaim his winning record, last
seen headed over the hill younder.
LITTLE DEVIL (14-4359) (21-23-0,51) of PLAYPEN fought MIKE TYSON (71-360) (20-6-
1,67) of BIG BAD BRAWLERS. LITTLE DEVIL handily defeated MIKE TYSON in a 2 minute
gruesome mismatched bout. She is a devilishly attractive little thing, isn't she,
Mike?
GERRICK GRIMM (50-3530) (18-20-1,99) of DRUID'S GROVE fought BLACK EYE (73-3654)
(14-11-2,55) of BLACK & BLUE. GERRICK GRIMM viciously subdued BLACK EYE in a 2
minute gory fray. Adding some unpleasant bruises and contusion to that original
black eye.
CHUCK NORRIS (71-993) (17-6-1,97) of BIG BAD BRAWLERS fought AMELIA (28-3417)
(22-7-1,61) of DODGE BULLETS. CHUCK NORRIS overpowered AMELIA in an action packed 1
minute brutal one-sided bout. How very unchivalrous of him.
FRED BEAR (47-5348) (24-13-0,113) of THE BEAR'S PAW fought PUPPY ON PATROL (71-
1613) (19-10-0,96) of DOGS OF WAR. FRED BEAR was defeated by PUPPY ON PATROL in a 2
minute duel. Tsk. Some people just don't believe in training and discipline for
their dogs.
BLACK FLAG (82-46046) (28-15-3,136) of TONGUE N CHEEK fought KARATIA (73-3624)
(21-4-1,92) of KIWI CONNECTION. BLACK FLAG savagely defeated KARATIA in an action
packed 4 minute brutal fight. The interesting thing is that this did not get called
a mis-match.
YOUNG JOAN (28-3534) (28-26-1,126) of DODGE BULLETS fought SAMURAI STRIKER (71-
62) (19-16-1,103) of DOGS OF WAR. YOUNG JOAN was handily defeated by SAMURAI STRIKER
in a 1 minute one-sided contest. And what this will do for Joan's adventure, I would
not like to guess.
HARI-KARI (73-3049) (21-5-0,167) of WAY TO GO! II fought LOOGIE CLAP (82-46049)
(25-19-2,137) of TONGUE N CHEEK. HARI-KARI vanquished LOOGIE CLAP in an action
packed 1 minute gruesome one-sided match. Gutted Loogie, in fact. Very messy. The
sand-rakers are annoyed, but then, they're often annoyed.
FIVE GOLDEN RINGS (16-4331) (39-9-0,210) of GOLDEN GLADIATORS fought PRIMUS (21-
4975) (54-16-0,207) of REAL BEER. FIVE GOLDEN RINGS was handily defeated by PRIMUS
in a 3 minute mismatched competition. Some gladiators should not drink. Grim words,
but true.
NEWT GINGRICH (5-3399) (87-31-0,203) of PARTY ANIMALS fought BLUE BLOOD (73-
3657) (24-12-1,163) of BLACK & BLUE. NEWT GINGRICH overpowered BLUE BLOOD in a
popular 1 minute one-sided bout. Lizards and amphibians don't care about the color
of your blood. They just want lots of it spilled.
MAJOR DAMAGE (31-600) (81-51-2,195) of MILITARY MAYHEM fought AVONSIDE (13-3927)
(36-49-1,206) of KIWI CONNECTION. MAJOR DAMAGE devastated AVONSIDE in an exciting 1
minute one-sided fight. Causing thereby, major damage, general problems, corporal
punishment, and a certain amount of private anguish. In fact, you could say the
Major was a host in himself.
BOARISH YELTSIN (5-3109) (70-46-2,186) of PARTY ANIMALS fought MOSGIEL (14-3836)
(32-16-2,159) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. BOARISH YELTSIN bested MOSGIEL in a 2 minute
brawl. Partying is not easy, you have to build up your skills and stamina, Mosgiel.
Maybe, a year or two from now, you can hold your own drink for drink against Boarish.
Or not.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (113-69-2,219) of ROYAL FLUSH fought CLOTTO (106-25) (0-
0-0,181) of Charming Local Fans. JACK VALTRAEDS overpowered CLOTTO in an action
packed 3 minute brutal uneven struggle. What can you expect from someone who accepts
the name "Clotto"?
MORTICIAN (2-3890) (81-20-1,273) of DARK TOADS fought GERMAN SHEPARD (26-916)
(101-59-0,206) of WORLDWIDE GORE. MORTICIAN viciously subdued GERMAN SHEPARD in an
exciting 17 minute bloody battle. This may, possibly, have been the longest fight,
though I haven't checked for that. At the least, it was long enough for me to get a
sandwich made to order and place a couple of bets, and what more can you ask?
DAIRY QUEEN (47-2685) (79-45-3,214) of ROYAL FLUSH fought RAVISHING REDBUD (52-
3197) (35-13-0,203) of FLOWER GIRLS. DAIRY QUEEN was savagely defeated by RAVISHING
REDBUD in a 5 minute match. Some people really REALLY go for the ice cream. I can
see it. This is beginning to be the season.
DUTCH TREAT (26-1841) (107-36-2,299) of WORLDWIDE GORE fought ORANGE CRUSH (48-
3809) (22-9-1,210) of COLORIFIC. DUTCH TREAT beat ORANGE CRUSH in a 2 minute fight.
Which would tend to suggest that Crush man NOT have been the most challenged, unless
they all missed.
PET CEMETARY (73-605) (82-41-2,231) of KING'S COURT fought CRYSALIS GUARD (106-
29) (0-0-0,200) of Charming Local Fans. PET CEMETARY savagely defeated CRYSALIS
GUARD in an exciting 4 minute gruesome fight. All well and good, Pet, but don't
expect help if someone steals your purse or wallet. Guards remember things like
this.
GROLSCH (21-5029) (49-10-4,225) of REAL BEER fought RIRORNI COOK (106-24) (0-0-
0,181) of Charming Local Fans. GROLSCH vanquished RIRORNI COOK in an action packed 1
minute gruesome one-sided duel. The Rirorni just can't drink, not unless it's
fermented mare's milk, which hardly counts as a real beer.
IRRITATING BEGGAR (73-1110) (70-21-1,223) of D.A. REJECTS fought AMBER
WOLFWALKER (106-11) (0-0-0,220) of Charming Local Fans. IRRITATING BEGGAR overcame
AMBER WOLFWALKER in an action packed 4 minute melee. Amazing that some people can
get money by being total pests. Paid to go away. I haven't got that one worked out
yet, but someday....

3416) (27-18-1,134) of DODGE BULLETS. Down 4. KISSYFUR viciously subdued BILLY
LILLY in a popular 2 minute bloody Challenge duel. Can it be the rumors of Billy's
former career as a fur-hunter have seeped out?
TAOS (26-4042) (23-13-1,182) of HERE TO PHOENIX challenged BALDER (28-3778) (31-
30-3,186) of VALHALLA. Up 4. TAOS narrowly defeated BALDER in an exciting 4 minute
bloody Challenge fight. Probably that Taos Lightning, which is nothing like mead.

with any previous George) doesn't handle those things well.

THE STOMPING GROUNDS
The new all-basher arena will be in Seam, DM 20. Only new teams (0FE) may
participate. The only rule is that all of your warriors must be bashers.
The first turn of the contest will be due on Monday, April 28. It will be a slow
turn-around arena. If you wish to enter a team, please submit your new team and first
turn strategies before then. Only one team per manager, please.
This arena will stay open indefinitely, providing there is interest (i.e., this is not
a contest that runs a set number of turns, although there are prizes scheduled after
the first 15 rounds). For more information, see details in the first newsletter or on
the forums.

Zeb Karan looked around the table at the rest of Dwes Eg's staff. Arenamasters,
standby and Dark Arena warriors, stewards and infirmarians, even the maintenance crew.
There was wine and beer on the side-table, even sandwiches, but no one was partaking.
"Stop looking like your dog died," Lew Voth said. He had once been the
arenamaster of Sentern and had taken his turns overseeing the fights in Dwes Eg. "We
all knew this day would come. When are they closing us down?"
"Immediately after the tourney, according to the information I was given."
"Short notice," Jame Rinvar, another arenamaster commented.
"No offense intended, these things just creep up on people. Tourneys make it
worse, I suppose, all the new teams being entered." Zeb grimaced. "Some of the file
cabinets have exploded from over-stuffing, you know, and it takes so long to run
through all the registered gladiators to find those who are planning to fight on any
given day that the day is OVER by the time we're ready to start."
"Which is why they closed down Sentern, Cimmeriac, and Firehold," Lew pointed
out. "This is the same thing all over again."
"Cycles," Jame said. "Things happen, and then later they happen again. We live
with it. And Dwes Eg did last for, what, eight and a half years before it reached the
explosion point. That isn't bad. That's forever, speaking practically."
"Eight or nine years is not forever--"
"The only thing that's real is today, and maybe, up to a point, tomorrow. I
don't see a problem with this. What are the new parameters, Zeb?"
"Dwes Eg remains open, existing teams can run and can recruit new members. BUT,
no new teams will be accepted. New teams will go into a new arena, DM 84, running its
first turn on the seventh of May. A regular two-week cycle."
"So Dwes Eg isn't actually being closed, just closed to new teams. Okay. This
works," Jame said again. "Number 84... does this mean it'll be out at that Blackstone
place? Rotten weather half the year, but I suppose you could say that about any site.
What about regional allegiance?"
"None specified in the data I received. Probably a personal-choice situation,"
Zeb said.
"Transfers?" Lew asked.
"I don't know about transfers IN," Zeb said, "but I'd guess yes, they would be
allowed. No transfers OUT, though. None out of DM 82, for that matter. Once you're
in 82 or 84, the only way out is death or graduation."
"That fairly describes most arenas," Jame said. "Anyone who takes up the
gladiatorial life has already accepted that."
