Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
Twas the night before the DM column was due, and all through the house, not a
creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Crip rose from his bed, with quite the
clatter, and said woe is me, a DM column really matters. So he sprung to his feet
and ran down the stairs, and started composing prose quite fair....
Bah, who are we kidding, Crip doesn't really have time to worry about this, he
just sent something to CSR saying please run all 15 characters again, no challenges,
avoids, or changes to training or strategies. Needless to say, we are not expecting
a good turn.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Zontani Sharp Eyes has come and gone after predicting that "the city," by which
I suppose he means Talahya, which is the city on the Isle in which Talahya, Home
Guard, Primus, Andorak, and Crysalis fight, taking turns in the same arena (try not
to run your fights too long, the scheduling is tight), will perish if "exactly six"
die in duels this week. Presumably any deaths in any of the arenas that operate here
would count, and what about private duels in alleys and the like? Talk about
imprecision! His eyes may be sharp, but his wits leave something to wish for.
Having other sources than Zontani, I can tell you a little more. Such as that
Lenpros avoided Sentinels in significant numbers today. What are they hiding, eh?
And Crimson Mist got the most challenges.
All that Zontani has to say is that "the pen is mightier than the sword, but the
maul is another story." We already knew that.
Twenty-eight fights, which is good. Seven standbys, which is not so good, but
what the heck. Only two challenges! Is this a case of not being sure who's tourney-
timing and who isn't? Whatever the reason, by the time we meet again, the tourney
will be over and I expect to see more challenges issued and accepted! TV challenges,
at that.
The fights:
DESPERADO (28-1152) (32-33-1,87) of DODGE BULLETS fought SCANDALF (4-6219) (26-
31-0,62) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. DESPERADO was overpowered by SCANDALF in a 1 minute
uneven bout. We welcome the return of the Shallowship, absent lo these many months.
But you might want to put a leash on Scandalf, or keep him out of the taverns
somehow. He'll become a byword and a hissing if you don't.
TUNDRA (45-4280) (16-10-1,48) of ARCTIC WASTES fought OLIANDER (7-5911) (17-6-
2,63) of SENTINELS. TUNDRA defeated OLIANDER in an exciting 2 minute fight. An
upset victory, which annoys the bookies. But they should realize that at this
season, Tundra has an advantage.
FOLMOR GRIGG (47-4501) (21-36-0,85) of THE MIDDLE WAY 3 fought UNHOLY TERROR (8-
5051) (15-12-3,42) of BLOOD RITES. FOLMOR GRIGG was vanquished by UNHOLY TERROR in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided fray. So it goes for new arrivals: matches they
never expected, leading to equally surprising results. Gets the old adrenaline
flowing.
EVALON ELKHORN (50-3553) (22-15-3,50) of DRUID'S GROVE fought OBROJOBO (7-5869)
(14-7-1,46) of SENTINELS. EVALON ELKHORN overpowered OBROJOBO in a 1 minute one-
sided fight. Things are not looking good for the Sentinels so far today. Too much
smash or punch behind the hanger? Whose idea was it, anyway, to add mint to the
cranberry smash? Festive, yes, but I think--this is only hearsay, I didn't try it
myself!--that it increases the potency, which didn't need it at all.
CANTEX (50-3618) (17-14-1,65) of LIFE IMPACTS fought LEGALASS (4-6217) (26-30-
1,65) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. CANTEX overcame LEGALASS in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
gruesome bout. It would seem that Cantex has, indeed, made an impact, though
fortunately not on Legalass's actual life. We try to keep that down, even without
Zontani's prophecies.
SKIN PEELER (73-5716) (13-1-1,41) of BLACKMAIL fought GHOST DANCER (28-3365)
(32-23-0,71) of DODGE BULLETS. SKIN PEELER savagely defeated GHOST DANCER in an
action packed 2 minute gory duel. That's got to be embarrassing for Ghost Dancer.
But gladiating is like that, the most unlikely looking people (using the term in a
general sense) come along and whack you hard.
JAVELIN (82-33234) (8-4-0,64) of THE WEAPONS fought AMELIA (28-3417) (25-13-
1,89) of DODGE BULLETS. JAVELIN savagely defeated AMELIA in an exciting 1 minute
gruesome bout. Dodging a bullet is clearly NOT the same as dodging a javelin. Or
else Amelia has also been dipping too deeply into the smash, the punch, and the fusil
oil. Whatever fusil oil is. Sounds gods-awful, doesn't it?
ARAGANT (4-6220) (33-21-0,118) of THE SHALLOWSHIP fought HAWTHORN (73-5794) (22-
26-1,93) of BAD APPLES. ARAGANT luckily beat HAWTHORN in an action packed 2 minute
fight. Whoa, this Hawthorn is another newcomer! They're pouring in from all
directions--man and woman the pumps! It's worse than a flood.
BLACK FLAG (82-46046) (33-19-3,142) of TONGUE N CHEEK fought GIMLET (4-6218)
(24-32-2,92) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. BLACK FLAG overpowered GIMLET in a popular 2 minute
gruesome one-sided match. And can we honestly feel any surprise at this? No. Even
the bookies don't try to pretend on this one.
BAERRA (7-1048) (29-10-0,118) of SENTINELS fought BENITO CHATTE (71-6184) (20-
32-1,92) of THE ZOO. BAERRA slimly won victory over BENITO CHATTE in an action
packed 3 minute bloody duel. Action-packed and bloody both, sounds intense. Well,
actually, it was intense, I saw it.
TOTTI (17-5991) (20-10-2,114) of ITALIAN FOOTBALL fought ROXANNE DE'MORRE (50-
3449) (36-29-0,100) of DRUID'S GROVE. TOTTI overpowered ROXANNE DE'MORRE in an
exciting 1 minute gory uneven fight. Ah, somebody else to resent being mistaken for
a football. Or maybe she'll rise above it with a masterfully, ah, make that
mistressfully indifference.
GERRICK GRIMM (50-3530) (20-27-1,103) of DRUID'S GROVE fought DON FRANCIS (30-
4619) (19-8-0,92) of LENPROS. GERRICK GRIMM was overcome by DON FRANCIS in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute competition. As to why the crowd was pleased, search me. I gave
up trying to understand crowds years ago. The mass mind is a mystery.
RUBBER KNIFE (54-2038) (53-42-1,157) of USELESS TOOLS fought NECROMANCER (78-
2520) (22-3-1,119) of MAGIC ARTISTS. RUBBER KNIFE beat NECROMANCER in a popular 1
minute match. Ah... bad luck, there, Necromancer. You'd better hope that no villain
in the adventure is armed with a rubber knife, eh?
MOSGIEL (14-3836) (32-18-2,180) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS fought YOUNG JOAN (28-3534)
(30-33-1,117) of DODGE BULLETS. MOSGIEL devastated YOUNG JOAN in an exciting 1
minute brutal one-sided fight. Does this mean that Young Joan should avoid the
Highlands, at least until she is older? Inquiring minds want to know, but can, if
necessary, live without the information.
CAFFREY'S (21-4748) (22-5-3,161) of REAL BEER fought HUNTSMAN (7-5837) (21-4-
0,134) of SENTINELS. CAFFREY'S overpowered HUNTSMAN in a 1 minute mismatched brawl.
And how does REAL beer compare to smash, Huntsman?
PRIVATE ROOM (31-3620) (27-15-0,172) of MILITARY MAYHEM fought BILLY LILLY (28-
3416) (28-26-1,130) of DODGE BULLETS. PRIVATE ROOM vanquished BILLY LILLY in an
action packed 1 minute mismatched bout. At least it was in private. Well, as
private as an arena fight can be, which I admit is not very.
KING UVDAHELL (47-1643) (58-32-1,199) of ROYAL FLUSH fought GOJIRO (106-31) (0-
0-0,220) of the College of Mimes. KING UVDAHELL was overpowered by GOJIRO in a
popular 1 minute mismatched conflict. Ah, that bites, especially for a king. But if
it helps, Gojiro's been practicing.
LAND OF FLUSH (11-4373) (20-14-0,184) of CONSORTIUM CRAP fought DEVIL'S ADVOCATE
(68-4666) (19-6-0,184) of BLOOD 4 THE MASSES. LAND OF FLUSH viciously subdued
DEVIL'S ADVOCATE in an exciting 4 minute bloody battle. Ur. Um. Well, I suppose
most of you can see the same play on words jumping up and down waving its hands as I
do. We'll leave it at that, okay?
DUTCH TREAT (26-1841) (114-38-2,196) of WORLDWIDE GORE fought VILLAINOUS
INFORMER (106-23) (0-0-0,181) of the College of Mimes. DUTCH TREAT savagely defeated
VILLAINOUS INFORMER in a crowd pleasing 3 minute match. And a good job, too, we
don't call that Informer Villainous without cause. In fact, he makes things up,
spreads totally untrue slanders, and generally stirs up as much trouble as he
possible can.
PRIMUS (21-4975) (62-17-0,203) of REAL BEER fought GOJIRO (106-31) (0-0-0,220)
of the College of Mimes. PRIMUS handily defeated GOJIRO in a 1 minute one-sided
bout. Ah... King Uvdahell tired him out? Whatever, good job, Primus.
RUBBER KNIFE (57-2546) (27-7-2,208) of USELESS TOOLS fought VILLAINOUS INFORMER
(106-23) (0-0-0,181) of the College of Mimes. RUBBER KNIFE vanquished VILLAINOUS
INFORMER in an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. Aha! The Villainous one is now
TWICED defeated in one day. This is good. Not that he'll learn anything from it.
And both Rubber Knives won their fights, also. Define "useless"?
HARI-KARI (73-3049) (30-5-0,238) of WAY TO GO! II fought CLOTTO (106-25) (0-0-
0,181) of the College of Mimes. HARI-KARI vanquished CLOTTO in a popular 2 minute
gruesome uneven duel. Hmm, we seem to be striking a vein of standbys here in the
later matches. This is probably significant, maybe even something I should ponder,
but... not today. I don't feel at all ponderable today.
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (120-71-2,277) of ROYAL FLUSH fought VERMICIOUS KNID
(106-30) (0-0-0,240) of the College of Mimes. JACK VALTRAEDS was viciously subdued
by VERMICIOUS KNID in a 6 minute fight. Well, at least you made him sweat for it,
Jack. See the maintenance crew on your way out, they've got a spray that kills the
vermies.
DAIRY QUEEN (47-2685) (86-47-3,265) of ROYAL FLUSH fought ARENAMASTER SANDAVOL
(106-28) (0-0-0,200) of the College of Mimes. DAIRY QUEEN luckily beat ARENAMASTER
SANDAVOL in a 2 minute brawl. Ah, good one, Dairy! It's always impressive when a
gladiator defeats an arenamaster.
NEWT GINGRICH (5-3399) (94-33-0,223) of PARTY ANIMALS fought BLUE BLOOD (73-
3657) (26-15-1,210) of BLACK & BLUE. NEWT GINGRICH devastated BLUE BLOOD in a
popular 1 minute bloody uneven brawl. Oddly enough, the internal fluids spilled onto
the sands were not blue, just plain old red.
BOARISH YELTSIN (5-3109) (78-47-2,261) of PARTY ANIMALS fought BLOODBATH (60-
704) (73-60-2,280) of BASKET WEAVING 101. BOARISH YELTSIN devastated BLOODBATH in a
popular 1 minute brutal one-sided contest. I find it hard to imagine bathing in
blood. I mean, really hard. First there's the problem of getting enough, then of
keeping it liquid enough, of not throwing up from the smell, and finally of rinsing
it off. Might as well just stick with water, if you ask me.
Ah, the challenges!
GREENSLEEVES (82-46003) (12-3-1,75) of COLOR TUNES challenged CRIMSON MIST (8-
5047) (19-8-1,73) of BLOOD RITES. Down 2. GREENSLEEVES demolished CRIMSON MIST in a
popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. And a colorful match it was, too. Let
me guess here, Greensleeves was perhaps a Dead Tourney Champ? Whatever, good work.
And for the title:
WEINERMUN (37-2635) (64-63-3,287) of ALL THE MUN'S MEN challenged GROLSCH (21-
5029) (58-10-4,311) of REAL BEER. Up 24. WEINERMUN viciously subdued GROLSCH in a 3
minute Challenge Title fight. So, do we conclude from this that Weinermun can really
hold his beer? Good work, both of you, and special congratulations to Weinermun.
