Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
Thanks to Stigma of Stupid who tried to impale my guy with sharp objects, but
naturally failed. I am the only one allowed to do that. Not much time to talk this
turn, only a week until tournament strategies are due, and the boss hasn't sent
anything in yet. Apparently Grolsch & I get another crack at the ADM tourney, but
Newt is off to Primus retirement. Sure glad I'm not eligible to face him on these
fine sands. All the rest of Crip's Crap pretty much stay where they are, except for
Catfish Hunter who will be joining us from Home Guard, but whether he gets to fight
here or not is another story.
For those who care about such things Newt is now at 231 total skills, (46 Attack, 37
Decise, 45 Init, 36 Parry, 34 Defence, and 33 Riposte). Overall, he has a +14 bonus,
though only a combined +1 in Attack+Defence. Boss wanted to get him to 100 wins, but
he'll have to retire at #99, retiring in the ominous shadow of the number of another
great Canuck legend

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
They tell me the spring tourney has come and gone, I wouldn't know from my own
observation, since they held it in some gods-forsaken place. Who has time to go
gadding around after tourneys? Let Olaf handle it. I hope many of you did well
there, all if you could manage it.
Here, we have thirty-eight fights, a very good number, although I must admit,
since you could count them yourselves, that there were nine standbys on the sands.
Thirteen challenges got through, one of them TV.
Smithsonian was avoided by Royal Flush. Doubtless other teams avoided each
other as well, but not with such wholesale determination.
Bloodbath received more challenges than our "Duelmaster," which may or may not
be significant, since Hari-Kari fought on his own challenge: the TV challenge. Very
proper.
And without further ado or adon't, the fights:
ROCK GLAS HUT FUN (8-4851) (18-11-3,45) of ORCISH IDIOMS fought ARAGANT (4-6220)
(34-24-0,70) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. ROCK GLAS HUT FUN was viciously subdued by ARAGANT
in a crowd pleasing 7 minute duel. And so it goes: you wander around throwing rocks
at glass huts, because the sound of it breaking is enjoyable, and suddenly someone
comes along and throws a rock back! It seems excessive, doesn't it?
GHOST DANCER (28-3365) (33-26-0,57) of DODGE BULLETS fought LEGALASS (4-6217)
(28-32-1,64) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. GHOST DANCER overpowered LEGALASS in a 1 minute
one-sided fight. How is this? Legalass falling to a dancing ghost? I would not
have taken him for such a one. Although it was a good dance. Very, ah, mystical.
FOLMOR GRIGG (47-4501) (21-40-0,49) of THE MIDDLE WAY 3 fought SMIRK (39-3606)
(28-10-0,82) of CHEAP SHOTS. FOLMOR GRIGG was subdued by SMIRK in an action packed 4
minute competition. It would appear that Folmor's hoped-for retirement has not come
about. Yet, at least. Perhaps he can retire next month. What could be more
pleasing than to retire in the month of May?
RED DRAGON (47-5585) (20-8-0,78) of CHAOTIX BEASTS fought AMELIA (28-3417) (26-
16-1,75) of DODGE BULLETS. RED DRAGON overpowered AMELIA in a crowd pleasing 2
minute one-sided duel. An estimable woman, Amelia, a very sure hand with the smash,
but as a gladiator she makes a fine pilot.
VIOLENT VIOLET (52-3308) (16-3-0,85) of FLOWER GIRLS fought EVALON ELKHORN (50-
3553) (24-17-3,53) of DRUID'S GROVE. VIOLENT VIOLET demolished EVALON ELKHORN in a 1
minute one-sided duel. Well done, Violet! But then, as someone observed recently,
you Flower Girls are always, ah, good.
MESSY MONGREL (71-1896) (14-12-0,54) of DOGS OF WAR fought DESPERADO (28-1152)
(34-35-1,86) of DODGE BULLETS. MESSY MONGREL was savagely defeated by DESPERADO in
an exciting 1 minute bloody match. I warned you, Mongrel, and others have also
warned you, this Desperado is not tolerant of careless dogs. Or much else, now that
I think about it. An intolerant type.
BENITO CHATTE (71-6184) (21-35-1,75) of THE ZOO fought ALASTARIAN DESERTER (106-
1) (0-0-0,30) of the College of Mimes. BENITO CHATTE devastated ALASTARIAN DESERTER
in a 1 minute uneven bout. And so I should hope! There seems to be a very strong
sentiment at the highest levels, as they say, against those who would desert Alastari
whether this be a time of need or otherwise.
DORINE EAGEL (71-6232) (22-9-0,75) of THE ZOO fought ALASTARIAN DESERTER (106-1)
(0-0-0,30) of the College of Mimes. DORINE EAGEL subdued ALASTARIAN DESERTER in a 2
minute match. As noted above, desertion is not well received. Some people get
punished over and over again. Which is perhaps unfair, but who said life would be
fair?
SKIN PEELER (73-5716) (16-2-1,81) of BLACKMAIL fought ZIGGY WOLFSBANE (21-6432)
(23-14-0,82) of NOMADIC TRIBE. SKIN PEELER was unbelievably bested by ZIGGY
WOLFSBANE in a popular 4 minute duel. Why, exactly, this was unbelievable I couldn't
guess. I had no trouble believing it. After all, I saw it, and everyone knows that
seeing is believing.
MALUS S'PROUT (73-5793) (18-30-1,85) of BAD APPLES fought SCANDALF (4-6219) (28-
33-0,66) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. MALUS S'PROUT savagely defeated SCANDALF in an action
packed 1 minute brutal bout. They do say that an apple a day keeps the doctors away,
but only if it's a good apple. The bad ones just make things worse.
SAMURAI STRIKER (71-62) (20-22-1,128) of DOGS OF WAR fought ROXANNE DE'MORRE
(50-3449) (38-31-0,119) of DRUID'S GROVE. SAMURAI STRIKER savagely defeated ROXANNE
DE'MORRE in a popular 4 minute brutal fight. Savagely? Why the savagery? I know
Roxy can be annoying, what woman can't? But isn't this a little over the top?
SERB SMASHER (71-1393) (20-12-2,130) of DOGS OF WAR fought YOUNG JOAN (28-3534)
(30-37-1,111) of DODGE BULLETS. SERB SMASHER was handily defeated by YOUNG JOAN in a
1 minute one-sided fight. Ah, it's about time Joan won a fight. If she has won
fights recently and I've forgotten, ignore this comment. The real question is
whether she likes goat cheese.
GERRICK GRIMM (50-3530) (21-30-1,117) of DRUID'S GROVE fought HAWTHORN (73-5794)
(23-29-1,118) of BAD APPLES. GERRICK GRIMM overpowered HAWTHORN in a 1 minute uneven
fight. Odd, this. You'd think a druid would be more sympathetic to an apple. Well,
I'd think it, anyway. But it just goes to show.
PHILLIP THE BIRD (40-3708) (17-13-1,179) of CRUEL PET NAMES fought BILLY LILLY
(28-3416) (29-29-1,146) of DODGE BULLETS. PHILLIP THE BIRD handily defeated BILLY
LILLY in a 1 minute one-sided duel. And down into official losing-record-land goes
Billy. Life is hard, and then you lose.
BULL FROG (73-4547) (26-9-0,179) of THE BULLS fought DON FRANCIS (30-4619) (22-
8-0,138) of LENPROS. BULL FROG was viciously subdued by DON FRANCIS in an action
packed 4 minute bout. I suppose I could say that the Frog just "bulled his way to
victory," and I might as well, since I can't think of anything else to say.
SLIPPERY NIPPLE (59-2323) (28-18-1,171) of HANGOVERS fought IMPRISONED SPY (106-
9) (0-0-0,170) of the College of Mimes. SLIPPERY NIPPLE demolished IMPRISONED SPY in
an action packed 1 minute one-sided melee. Ah, well, the Spy never could hold his
liquor, or anyone else's either. Why do you think we imprisoned him? He was giving
us all a bad name.
LAND OF FLUSH (11-4373) (23-15-0,198) of CONSORTIUM CRAP fought BLACK FLAG (82-
46046) (35-21-3,180) of TONGUE N CHEEK. LAND OF FLUSH savagely defeated BLACK FLAG
in a popular 8 minute gory duel. Eight minutes, eh? That's a respectable length,
and it makes me think--I never believe what the bookies tell us--that it was an even
match. Besides being time enough to eat a quick hotdog.
GROLSCH (21-5029) (60-12-4,199) of REAL BEER fought TELGOR (106-27) (0-0-0,200)
of the College of Mimes. GROLSCH defeated TELGOR in an action packed 2 minute brutal
fight. Eh, Telgor, who cares about him? He's always been something of a trouble-
maker in the Commission offices. I think, myself, that we shouldn't let the standbys
hang out at the Commission offices, they treat the place like their guildhouse and
leave dirty socks on the furniture, but Debby Tonte likes them. Don't ask me why, I
couldn't tell you.
SITS ON HIS DUFF (73-1810) (39-22-3,191) of THINGS GEORGE DOES fought GOJIRO
(106-31) (0-0-0,220) of the College of Mimes. SITS ON HIS DUFF was handily defeated
by GOJIRO in a 1 minute one-sided contest. That dummy! You don't sit on your duff
during the FIGHT. Sit on your opponent's duff!
JACK VALTRAEDS (47-407) (122-73-2,219) of ROYAL FLUSH fought VERMICIOUS KNID
(106-30) (0-0-0,240) of the College of Mimes. JACK VALTRAEDS was subdued by
VERMICIOUS KNID in an action packed 6 minute bout. And congratulations to Jack for
having held out so long. The Knid is indeed vermicious.
KING UVDAHELL (47-1643) (61-33-1,231) of ROYAL FLUSH fought THE BLACKSMITH (106-
22) (0-0-0,181) of the College of Mimes. KING UVDAHELL devastated THE BLACKSMITH in
a popular 1 minute one-sided contest. Good work, King, so long as you don't have a
horse to be shod in the near future. Although they tell me--by signs, since they're
mimes--that the Blacksmith doesn't hold grudge.
DAIRY QUEEN (47-2685) (90-47-3,290) of ROYAL FLUSH fought DEVIL'S ADVOCATE (68-
4666) (19-10-0,201) of BLOOD 4 THE MASSES. DAIRY QUEEN overpowered DEVIL'S ADVOCATE
in a popular 2 minute bloody one-sided bout. Ah, no surprise here. I knew all along
that a little soft-serve ice cream can overcome a multitude of problems.
DUTCH TREAT (26-1841) (118-38-2,219) of WORLDWIDE GORE fought VERMICIOUS KNID
(106-30) (0-0-0,240) of the College of Mimes. DUTCH TREAT devastated VERMICIOUS KNID
in an exciting 5 minute brutal one-sided brawl. Revenge for Jack Valtraeds, perhaps?
Way to go, Dutch!
PRIMUS (21-4975) (66-17-0,247) of REAL BEER fought WEINERMUN (37-2635) (65-66-
3,199) of ALL THE MUN'S MEN. PRIMUS overcame WEINERMUN in a crowd pleasing 2 minute
bout. Beer and hotdogs, not a bad combination.
RUBBER KNIFE (57-2546) (28-7-2,214) of USELESS TOOLS fought GOJIRO (106-31) (0-
0-0,220) of the College of Mimes. RUBBER KNIFE defeated GOJIRO in an action packed 2
minute struggle. Slapped him silly, in fact. Whatever it takes, eh?
The challenge matches:
BALLIOL BLACKMOON (81-614) (18-11-0,68) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged SRAN3E
(28-4382) (17-11-0,82) of PHANTACITY. Up 14. BALLIOL BLACKMOON handily defeated
SRAN3E in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge conflict. "Handily," which means, of
course, no kicking or biting.
NERVE RAKER (21-1874) (19-13-1,55) of NOMADIC TRIBE challenged GAFFER SMITH (73-
5791) (19-13-0,67) of BAD APPLES. Up 12. NERVE RAKER was demolished by GAFFER SMITH
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge brawl. Nothing like a good apple to settle the
nerves. Or so they tell me, my nerves are settled all the time.
THELONIUS (21-6631) (21-3-1,89) of NOMADIC TRIBE challenged CRIMSON MIST (8-
5047) (22-9-1,100) of BLOOD RITES. Up 11. THELONIUS handily defeated CRIMSON MIST
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. A neat and compact job. As we all know,
music has charms to soothe even bloody-handed gladiators. Amazing, when you think
about it. Lady Sheila could've started a music school and not had to bother with all
these contentions gladiators, if only she'd thought to try music against the Chaos
Invaders first.
ANVIL IRONFIST (81-84) (25-6-0,75) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged TUNDRA (45-
4280) (18-12-1,75) of ARCTIC WASTES. Straight across. ANVIL IRONFIST luckily beat
TUNDRA in an exciting 6 minute bloody Challenge match. I have to tell you, this did
NOT look like luck to me.
OLIANDER (7-5911) (18-9-2,69) of SENTINELS challenged GIMLET (4-6218) (24-36-
2,71) of THE SHALLOWSHIP. Up 2. OLIANDER overpowered GIMLET in an action packed 1
minute one-sided Challenge fight. Natural enough, anyone who's trained on smash, and
I have tried smash and speak advisedly, is up for anything. ANYTHING.
VAMPIRE (82-29366) (10-1-0,92) of DARK TOADS 04V challenged UNHOLY TERROR (8-
5051) (18-13-3,103) of BLOOD RITES. Up 11. VAMPIRE overpowered UNHOLY TERROR in a 1
minute uneven Challenge duel. Odd, I'd have thought them natural allies. Of course,
among the bad guys, allies are merely enemies who aren't fight right that minute.
RUBBER KNIFE (54-2038) (54-43-1,147) of USELESS TOOLS challenged MOSGIEL (14-
3836) (33-21-2,163) of OTAGO HIGHLANDERS. Up 16. RUBBER KNIFE was viciously subdued
by MOSGIEL in a 4 minute Challenge duel. And here we find the OTHER Rubber Knife,
losing. It balances nicely.
GREENSLEEVES (82-46003) (15-3-1,123) of COLOR TUNES challenged PUPPY ON PATROL
(71-1613) (22-15-0,160) of DOGS OF WAR. Up 37. GREENSLEEVES devastated PUPPY ON
PATROL in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge competition. Natural enough, considering
what the Pup did to that pair of satin slippers. It's enough to drive a person to
cats.
TOTTI (17-5991) (23-11-2,146) of ITALIAN FOOTBALL challenged HUNTSMAN (7-5837)
(24-5-0,147) of SENTINELS. Up 1. TOTTI vanquished HUNTSMAN in an exciting 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. Ah, I thought for a moment this was a home-town match,
but I was thinking of the IMPORTED Footballers, no doubt. A different batch of
thugs.
CHUCK NORRIS (71-993) (20-11-1,182) of BIG BAD BRAWLERS challenged DISCO QUEEN
(47-1992) (50-24-1,252) of ROYAL FLUSH. Up 70. CHUCK NORRIS was dealt death by
DISCO QUEEN in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. Never mess with the Queen, Chuck.
STIGMA OF STUPID (31-4948) (37-22-1,202) of UNFIT TO BE ORCS challenged NEWT
GINGRICH (5-3399) (98-33-0,275) of PARTY ANIMALS. Up 73. STIGMA OF STUPID was
devastated by NEWT GINGRICH in a 1 minute Challenge fight. You can see how stigma
got his name, can't you?
BOARISH YELTSIN (5-3109) (82-47-2,312) of PARTY ANIMALS challenged BLOODBATH
(60-704) (75-62-2,243) of BASKET WEAVING 101. Down 79, and except for the title
match, the only down-challenge in the lot. You can't go by title matches, though. A
much higher proportion of up-challenges than Andorak, which is interesting. BOARISH
YELTSIN handily defeated BLOODBATH in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. No
surprise here.
For the title:
HARI-KARI (73-3049) (34-5-0,288) of WAY TO GO! II TV challenged BLUE BLOOD (73-
3657) (27-18-1,214) of BLACK & BLUE. Down 74. HARI-KARI devastated BLUE BLOOD in a
4 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. It's good to see the top gladiator taking
an active interest. Congratulations to Hari-Kari, and a vote of sympathy for the
battered and bruised Blue Blood.
