Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard
What a great honor and what a big suprise. I what to thank Dutch Treat for not
fighting so I could take my rightful place as the tower guardian. Let see if I can
keep it. I'm not much of talker. So lets get to fighting.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Debby Tonte did the notes today, and I was going to let her do the actual spy
report, but she got insulting, called this place a dump! So I asked her to leave. I
like to see and hear a little respect around here. Not a lot, mind you, I don't
require that, but at least a little. Debbie's just jealous because this is a better,
more active arena than Free Blades.
Biggest point gain: Torans Ulrik, thirty-three.
Biggest point loss: Romor Saith, thirty-one.
Tongue N Cheek was most avoided, Royal Flush avoided them the most.
Javelin got the most challenges.
Forty-six fights, thirteen standbys. Not good, people! I know the standbys
whine and say they need to work, but don't listen to them. I also know that on the
alternate weeks, when not fighting HERE, the standbys go off and hold their own
fights. So they're getting all the practice they need.
Seventeen challenges, which is good.
First, a quick run-through of the standby fights, get 'em out of the way:

action packed 2 minute brutal fight.
That's 4-9 for the standbys, and those who lost to them had better hit the
practice floor. Ah, let me rephrase that: had better get in more practice.
The other random matches, and some of them are VERY random:

0,69) of FULL SPECTRUM. UNCLE FESTER demolished BLACK in a 1 minute one-sided
battle. And at the end of the fight, Black yelled out, "Uncle!" Sorry, couldn't
resist that one.
TORANS ULRIK (72-6399) (14-20-0,48) of MIDDLE WAY 9 fought WITCH (71-1841) (24-
16-1,83) of DOGS OF WAR. TORANS ULRIK overpowered WITCH in an exciting 1 minute
uneven competition. Hence the big point gain.
QUEEN (75-3316) (18-8-1,84) of KIWI CONNECTIONS fought SKI MASK (58-5869) (51-
93-1,66) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES. QUEEN overpowered SKI MASK in an action packed 1
minute one-sided battle. Roast duck, anyone?
WASNIS (83-224) (23-15-0,86) of OLLIS HEROES fought GLACIER (58-5887) (28-36-
0,67) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES. WASNIS was handily defeated by GLACIER in a 1 minute
one-sided match. Yes, well, this is a "glacier-friendly" season. Darned cold, in
fact.
ORRIE POLLAS (83-295) (20-20-2,62) of MIDDLE WAY 21 fought MESSY MONGREL (71-
1896) (17-17-0,71) of DOGS OF WAR. ORRIE POLLAS demolished MESSY MONGREL in a 1
minute uneven duel. A dog who makes messes isn't a Good Dog, so this was, um, a
learning experience for the Mongrel?
WATERLOO (75-3317) (25-4-1,102) of KIWI CONNECTIONS fought SRAN3E (28-4382) (20-
16-0,115) of PHANTACITY. WATERLOO was unbelievably bested by SRAN3E in an exciting 5
minute gory duel. I think this must be the unorthography, it gives Sran3e an edge.
Nothing wrong with an edge, even if--maybe especially if!--it makes the clerks
unhappy. Those clerks want things too easy.
HUNZICKER BOWL (23-4182) (44-26-2,175) of SKI TAOS fought CLEVER (50-2192) (53-
35-2,144) of RANDOM BLADES. HUNZICKER BOWL won victory over CLEVER in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute brutal bout. Easy to guess who's going places this winter and
who's staying home practicing.
UZI (44-1701) (33-34-1,175) of BLOWN AWAY fought AMELIA (28-3417) (44-33-1,142)
of DODGE BULLETS. UZI beat AMELIA in a 2 minute bout. No surprise here. Well,
maybe a surprise. I thought an uzi did bullets, yes? And Amelia is supposed to
dodge them?
BLACK JACK SHELACK (47-4850) (37-25-2,172) of ROYAL FLUSH fought CRIMSON MIST
(8-5047) (37-29-1,157) of BLOOD RITES. BLACK JACK SHELACK demolished CRIMSON MIST in
a 1 minute one-sided conflict. Black trumps most colors.
F.O.A.D. (73-442) (34-17-2,178) of ALPHABET SOUP fought KENYA (4-6484) (30-3-
1,110) of KIWI CONNECTION. F.O.A.D. overcame KENYA in an exciting 1 minute fight.
Seems like a sneaky trick to get your opponent standing there trying to figure out
what the initials stand for, and then whomp him when he's distracted. But if that's
what wins the fights....
BULL FROG (73-4547) (32-17-0,177) of THE BULLS fought SAMURAI STRIKER (71-62)
(22-26-1,132) of DOGS OF WAR. BULL FROG subdued SAMURAI STRIKER in an exciting 1
minute struggle. Are we a zoo here? Bulls, dogs, ducks, monkeys, even frogs. A
strange development.
MISS ZING (8-824) (71-52-3,190) of LADIES IN WAITING fought GHOST DANCER (28-
3365) (50-44-0,173) of DODGE BULLETS. MISS ZING overpowered GHOST DANCER in a 1
minute one-sided struggle. Okay, so he can't fight, can he dance, Miss?
WHIRLWIND (30-3437) (31-23-0,190) of STEEL BLADES fought MONKEY DO (25-4152)
(29-18-2,198) of PRIMATES-R-US. WHIRLWIND was overpowered by MONKEY DO in a 1 minute
one-sided bout. Strange fight. There really isn't anything else I can say about it.
BULL DURHAM (5-4324) (39-20-1,232) of PARTY ANIMALS fought TUNDRA (45-4280) (37-
28-1,188) of ARCTIC WASTES. BULL DURHAM beat TUNDRA in an action packed 1 minute
gory duel. Another bull!
SITS ON HIS DUFF (73-1810) (46-26-4,218) of THINGS GEORGE DOES fought YOUNG JOAN
(28-3534) (43-59-1,201) of DODGE BULLETS. SITS ON HIS DUFF overpowered YOUNG JOAN in
a popular 2 minute gruesome one-sided duel. Natural enough, when you think about it.
Sits gets plenty of rest and is full of energy for the fight; Joan rushes around, all
the time DOING things, and so she shows up tired.
SLIPPERY NIPPLE (59-2323) (37-24-1,219) of HANGOVERS fought LOOGIE CLAP (82-
46049) (39-34-2,198) of TONGUE N CHEEK. SLIPPERY NIPPLE was narrowly defeated by
LOOGIE CLAP in a 3 minute conflict. I think I'll pass on this one.

2340) (49-46-2,199) of STEEL BLADES. Up 7. LONDON QUIREBOY was vanquished by WYNETT
in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge bout. I'm not thinking of anything to say about
this one.
WHACKING WILLOW (52-3167) (56-21-1,210) of FLOWER GIRLS challenged TAOS (26-
4042) (30-17-1,229) of HERE TO PHOENIX. Up 19. WHACKING WILLOW narrowly defeated
TAOS in a 7 minute Challenge conflict. And she enjoyed every minute of it, I'm sure.
She always does.
QUEEN (82-33307) (19-7-0,183) of DARK TOADS 05Q challenged A GROUNDSKEEPER (45-
1613) (35-29-1,198) of AVID FANS. Up 15. QUEEN devastated A GROUNDSKEEPER in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge battle. As well she should have done, the grounds were a
mess!
NUMBSKULL (52-2948) (16-7-2,184) of OTTO'S PARTS challenged MOSQUITO (5-5011)
(24-16-1,185) of BLOOD SUCKERS. Up 1. NUMBSKULL was demolished by MOSQUITO in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. Insidious critters, mosquitoes.
BEERVAHNA (60-4292) (39-35-3,194) of INGRATE WHITE NORTH challenged VIOLATOR
(44-2122) (57-46-1,197) of DEMONIC FURY. Up 3. BEERVAHNA beat VIOLATOR in a popular
2 minute gory Challenge melee. Nothing like beer to soothe the demon's fury, they
say. I've never tried it myself, I prefer to avoid the need.

you know. They tend to be pushy, and often rude, as well.

How about if we rethink the "useless" designation?

Considering the respective rankings and experience, Mosgiel showed well. So I

NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA
The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
"But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
