                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Chief Tower Guard

It seems Olaf Modeen wants a column. Does he not know that a Tower Guardian is
busy? I have places to go, people to see and training to attend to. I'm a busy
Guardian. If I spend all of my time writing columns, I'll need to rely on some of my
teammates for notes on the other battles - scouting reports and such. These things
are important. It is what allowed me to know before last turn just how foul Lord Foul
really was, and in what ways. Where does he aim his foulness? Is he able to protect
it, or does he just try to use the foulness as a ruse so others won't attack? These
are the little things that can give a warrior an edge.
What would you have me do, Olaf? I've read your notes from the fights. They tend
to be a bit skimpy. "So-and-so bested such-and-such in a one minute exciting fight."
Now those are truly helpful notes. I guess you do frequently add the style, although
I think all of the teams have those pretty accessible, so I wouldn't count that for
much. Or perhaps I should have a teammate help me out? I read Hagar's notes last
time I got busy. "Your opponent bled like a stuck pig." Yeah, thanks Hagar. At least
that way I knew it was my opponent who bled, in case I had somehow missed that.
This is for you Crysalis! A column penned by your very own Tower Guardian. May
it bring you much joy and may your life never depend on Hagar's notes!

                                          Huntsman
Sentinel and Tower Guardian of Crysalis

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Ho there.
It's Olaf Modeen again, your friendly neighborhood old fart.
First off, I want to thank Huntsman for writing a column. I know it has improved
my life immeasurably, and believe it has done the same for everyone else here.
We had sixteen fights, an improvement over last turn, and three challenges, also
an improvement. I heard that Sentinels avoided Royal Flush, but don't know if it's
really true. Sometimes Debby Tonte makes things up.
     CANNONBALL (72-5313) (52-66-3,209) of X-POSSE challenged UNCLE FESTER (59-2768)
(49-41-1,220) of TALL TALES. CANNONBALL devastated UNCLE FESTER in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. Cannonball is the overall popularity leader and also the
top Lunger.
     COPYCAT (72-5854) (18-25-1,78) of OUTLAWS challenged GAUTREK (47-7666) (28-36-
3,81) of JOMSVIKINGS. COPYCAT was demolished by GAUTREK in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge melee.
CRYBABY (72-5853) (19-30-1,85) of OUTLAWS challenged KNOS THE AXE (74-4394) (17-
2-0,92) of BATTLEAXE STAMPEDE. CRYBABY defeated KNOS THE AXE in a 1 minute Challenge
duel.
HUNTSMAN (7-5837) (68-51-1,233) of SENTINELS fought LORD FOUL (59-1395) (36-56-
2,187) of BLOODGUARD. HUNTSMAN bested LORD FOUL in a popular 1 minute Title contest.
So of course, Huntsman is still our top Slasher as well as the Tower Guardian. And
Lord Foul is still our top Parry-Lunge.
GRIZZ GRIMHULT (19-5083) (22-12-1,192) of BATTLEAXE STAMPEDE fought VERMICIOUS
KNID (106-30) (0-0-0,240) of . GRIZZ GRIMHULT was defeated by VERMICIOUS KNID in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute match. Grizz is top Striker. The Knid is disgusting.
HREIDMAR THE RED (10-6148) (36-18-0,205) of VIKINGS fought RIRORNI COOK (106-24)
(0-0-0,181) of . HREIDMAR THE RED devastated RIRORNI COOK in a crowd pleasing 3
minute one-sided duel. Hreidmar is the arena's best Aimed Blow and also a decent cook
in his own right.
     HAGAR BLUETOOTH (10-5850) (52-43-1,191) of VIKINGS fought G W BUSH (59-2764) (45-
45-2,163) of TALL TALES. HAGAR BLUETOOTH devastated G W BUSH in an action packed 1
minute one-sided competition.
BALDASSARE (7-6003) (52-52-0,197) of SENTINELS fought TAMMY FAYE (39-3520) (42-
85-0,177) of WITLESS WONDERS. BALDASSARE vanquished TAMMY FAYE in an action packed 1
minute uneven duel. Baldassare is the top Parry-Strike.
LUSTY LISA (28-5412) (24-26-2,114) of TEAM KASSEL TAP fought HOPALONG CASSIDY
(72-7839) (27-23-0,107) of COWBOY CROONERS. LUSTY LISA was defeated by HOPALONG
CASSIDY in an action packed 3 minute duel.
LITTLE BOU (21-7929) (30-22-0,127) of NOMADIC TRIBE fought DEEDERS (28-5419) (23-
15-1,140) of TEAM KASSEL TAP. LITTLE BOU savagely defeated DEEDERS in an exciting 7
minute gruesome fight. Little Bou was voted this turn's favorite fighter.
MAULT LIQUOR (22-6728) (23-12-1,133) of MAULS LOCAL 457 fought RICE & BEANS (47-
8667) (21-5-1,107) of EL CAMINO:HOT SAUCE. MAULT LIQUOR was beaten by RICE & BEANS in
a 2 minute fight.
SWEET REVENGE (8-5378) (24-4-0,147) of PEASANT REBELLION fought KING MIDAS (59-
2770) (42-42-1,140) of TALL TALES. SWEET REVENGE was demolished by KING MIDAS in a 1
minute mismatched match.
     VISIONS (84-26780) (21-19-0,82) of INNERVISIONS fought YRSA (47-7671) (22-44-
1,37) of JOMSVIKINGS. VISIONS devastated YRSA in a 1 minute one-sided battle. Yrsa
is top Basher.
GENE AUTRY (72-7838) (19-31-3,59) of COWBOY CROONERS fought PEPPER (47-8958) (13-
4-0,64) of STAR PRAIRIE. GENE AUTRY bested PEPPER in a crowd pleasing 1 minute bout.
JOHNNY APPLESEED (59-2767) (29-61-0,67) of TALL TALES fought BIKINI ATOLL (47-
7799) (33-27-1,81) of NUKE TEST. JOHNNY APPLESEED was viciously subdued by BIKINI
ATOLL in a 3 minute fight. Bikini Atoll is top TP.
CABO WABO (51-5583) (16-11-2,43) of VAN DUEL fought CAPTURED PIRATE KING (106-2)
(0-0-0,30) of . CABO WABO was devastated by CAPTURED PIRATE KING in a 1 minute
uneven duel, after which the Pirate King did a stirring little song and dance. Cabo
Wabo was the least popular fighter this turn, perhaps because he walked out of the
arena during the performance.
That's all the news, pals. Sorry I couldn't give more details, Huntsman. Spy
reporter union prohibits that.

To: All Managers

In the interest of preserving our natural resources and preventing managerial writer's
cramp, the census form has been eliminated, effective immediately. Managers may
register their warriors' races and/or favorite sayings by simply writing them on a
separate piece of paper and submitting them to the Commission. Each warrior may have
up to 15 favorite sayings. Each saying must be categorized Jeer, Gloat, Boredom, Ouch,
Victory and may be up to 70 characters long. For any questions, please contact the
Gladiatorial Commission.

                          MAKING YOUR CHALLENGES GO THROUGH

First, you need to be sure you are making your challenges correctly.
     1. Are you writing down the warrior I.D. number of the warrior you want to
challenge?
     2. Is your handwriting clear?
     3. Is the warrior you are challenging within range of your warrior? Warriors
can challenge within their own class and the next higher class, plus the "Challenger"
classes can also challenge the next lower class. So, an Adept can challenge Adepts
and Challenger Adepts. A Challenger Adept can challenge Adepts, Challenger Adepts,
and Champions. (Try not to challenge down, though. Besides being unsportsmanlike and
making everyone mad, it isn't advantageous to your warriors. They need to fight more
experienced warriors so they will learn.)
     4. Are your warriors eligible to make challenges? If they didn't fight within
the last two turns, then they can't challenge.
     5. Are the warriors they want to fight eligible to receive challenges? If they
didn't fight within the last two turns, then they can't be challenged.

Next, adjust your choices for the maximum likelihood of getting your challenges.
There are several things that will help:
     1. Have each of your warriors challenge two different opponents from two
different teams. That way, if the first opponent's team doesn't fight that turn, you
still might get your second challenge.
     2. Use your avoids. Have each warrior avoid the teams of whoever you think
might be likely to challenge him. If you can get out of being challenged, that
increases your chance of getting your own challenge through.
     3. Don't challenge warriors who didn't fight last turn. The odds are higher
that they won't be fighting this turn.
     4. Don't challenge warriors who might be involved in a bloodfeud (either as the
killers, or the avengers). A bloodfeud challenge has priority over all other
challenges.
     5. Don't challenge Tournament Victors. A TV challenge has priority over all
other challenges except bloodfeuds. You'll need to do a little research in back
issues of the newsletter to find out who the TVs are.
     6. Don't challenge warriors who you know are going to challenge someone else, or
are going to get challenged by someone else. Your challenge has a better chance of
getting through if it is the only challenge to that particular warrior.
     7. Don't challenge the "easy pickings." That is, warriors above you who have
way too few fights or very bad records for where they are ranked. They will tend to
get challenged a lot.
     8. Don't challenge warriors who are likely to be avoiding your team. This
includes any warrior your team fought within the last two turns.
Well, it sounds like I've eliminated just about everybody, doesn't it? Of course
you can challenge opponents who fit into one or more of those categories; just try to
find ones who don't. Your idea candidate for a challenge is: A warrior ranked
somewhat above your warrior in the same class, or in the next higher class, with a few
more fights than your warrior, and a winning record, who isn't a TV and isn't
currently at war with anyone.
I hope this will be of some help to you.
