In the Far West:
Herlas sat at one side of the boat next to the rail, wrapped in his cloak and
staring out to sea; he ignored everybody. Shania sat in the bow, wrapped in her
cloak, staring out to sea, and ignoring everybody. The rest of the group, Ashon
Chang, Werre, Rughal, Vurand, and Jammies, went about the business of getting the
boat ready to sail. When the tide turned and started outward just before sunset, the
boat went with it.
Werre, Rughal, and Jammies handled the actual sailing, two on and the third
resting in rotation. Werre had sailed before, Rughal had some knowledge of boats,
and Jammies was a fast learner. It would turn out to be an exhausting schedule,
which they all realized, but Vurand was worse than useless on a boat, Shania didn't
have the strength to help, and Ashon Chang's job was to keep a close and constant
watch on Herlas.
The sun set before they were out of sight of the coast, coloring the sea before
them like blood.
"A bad omen," Vurand muttered, staring westward past Shania's motionless form.
Ashon Chang hesitated, looking away from Herlas to the red sea beyond. One
could not deny the reality of omens, but.... "Our journey will be what we make of
it, my friend."
"And we're nearing the end of it," Jammies added, coming up behind the two.
"Praise Mantor for that!"
"Geographically, we may be coming to the end," Ashon Chang corrected him, "but
in terms of actions to be taken and problems to be solved, I suspect we aren't even
half-way."
"I didn't want to hear that," Jammies told him. He shrugged. "I know you're
right, but can't you let me keep an illusion or two for another few days?"
The last burning rim of the sun disappeared under the horizon, and night
unrolled from the east. The speed with which darkness fell was unnerving.
"The moon'll be up in a couple of hours," Vurand muttered uneasily. "I'm not
afraid of the dark." He sounded unsure of that, and yet all the party knew that it
was true. The Orc had moved through the darkness of the mountains and forests
without hesitation. But there was something about this night....
Ashon Chang glanced back at Herlas, but the Fratsfan merely shifted his position
a little and continued to stare into the distance. At the bow, Shania was invisible.
"Lady Silverstar should go into the cabin and sleep," he said suddenly. Saying her
name focused his vague alarm, and he stared forward, trying to pierce the darkness.
"I'll remind her," Vurand agreed. He braced himself on the side of the cabin
against the movement of the deck and edged forward. A horse was easier to ride.
Hell, if a horse made trouble, started pitching, you could get off and walk.
"Shania, you need to.... Shania? Shania! Rughal, Ashon, she's not here! Shania's
gone!"
"She...she just went into the cabin when it got dark, and we didn't notice,"
Jammies said quickly. He scrambled down into the low doorway to check.
Ashon Chang moved in a different direction; the samurai had his own suspicions,
and he'd been against including Herlas in their party once the man had confessed.
The Fratsfan mage hadn't moved except to stand up and stare forward. The gladiator
saw his face pale as pearl in the darkness. He grabbed Herlas' shoulder. "Where is
she?"
"I don't know--"
"TELL ME, damn you!" He shook the mage hard.
"I. Don't. Know," Herlas repeated. "I've been under your eye the whole time--
yours or one of the others. What could I have done, how could I have spirited her
away--"
"Magic."
"Not in the current state of the Arcanum," Herlas snarled. "My powers are not
so great that I can draw from Outside sources. And would I do something to Shania
and stay here to receive your vengeance? I'm not such a fool!"
"Very nearly, though," Rughal said grimly. He grabbed Herlas' other shoulder.
"You may not have taken her away, but you can make a guess as to who did, how, why...
and where. If you want to see the sun rise again--"
"The triumph of brawn over brain?" Herlas sneered. Then he let out his breath
in a sigh. "I can make guesses," he admitted, "but they won't do you any good. If
she was taken as I think, none of you could get near her." He sighed again. "I do
not wish Shania Silverstar ill, but some things are too important for personal
considerations--the restoration of the Arcanum is one of them. Shania understood
that herself. It is her goal. She's dying, as you know whether you admit it or not.
What better use for her life than to--"
Rughal's free hand closed around the magician's throat, choking off any further
words.
"Don't kill him yet, Rughal," Ashon Chang said grimly. "First let him tell us
his 'guesses' on what has happened to Lady Shania. Then I'll help you kill him."
One hand ran along the sheathed curve of his sword.
Rughal relaxed his grip a little. Herlas sucked in air. "Start with who took
her," the ranger said.
"I don't know names," Herlas gasped. "A coalition of wizards and priests--"
"Think of some names," the samurai growled. His dagger gleamed silver in the
starlight as he brought it up to prick the Fratsfan's cheek just below his eye.
"I don't know names! Just...Murluvir, the one who came to see me in Zensu. He
isn't the principal, just an agent, as I was to be--"
"Don't lie," Rughal said. His voice was cold and smooth as ice. Or steel. "As
you WERE an agent. For whom?"
"I don't know! I didn't ask. Some things it's better not to know...."
"Guess," Ashon Chang ordered implacably.
"I don't know!" Herlas panted, perhaps gathering strength for more denials.
But he finally said, "I suspect...Folstrom. Or someone like them. Someone who can
draw on power from Outside."
"So that's who...for now. Tell us why," Rughal demanded. Before the Fratsfan
could answer, he added, "And don't tell us it's another thing you don't know!"
"But I don't!" he wailed. "All I can do is guess--"
"So guess." Ashon Chang leaned closer. "But guess right."
"Maybe...because she's from Outside, too. Or because she's a seer. Because she
knows things that other people don't understand how to know. Or because she's linked
to the Ghean Arcanum even though she's an Outsider. Some of those reasons, all of
them, none of them. I swear I don't know!"
"And how was it done?" Ashon Chang asked. "We assume magic of some kind--
nothing else would make sense. But under current circumstances--"
"They have no fear, no discretion, no patience!" Herlas' exasperation seemed
genuine. "It must have been some kind of small Gate, but to open one NOW...the
risks...."
"And the last question," Rughal said in a soft voice that sounded no less
dangerous for its softness. "Where have they taken her?"
There was a long silence.
"You don't know," Ashon Chang said. His grip on the man's shoulder tightened;
he could feel bones grinding against each other under his fingers. "Guess."
"To the Eye of the West. Wherever it is."

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
For the last time, I greet you, glorious Lirin Kiv. Indeed, I have been
inducted into Primus and my time here draws nigh unto its end. I arrived on turn
#184 and went 29-8-3 while here. I am proud to have been the Champion of the Horn
for eight cycles. I once went four turns in a row and also went 3 turns in a row.
The competition here has been strong and noble. I salute every warrior that has ever
dueled on the sands of Lirin Kiv. My "rival" here has been the honorable Deanjli Tyl
Rhu. We went 2-2 in our encounters. On my 31st fight here I took the throne from
her. On my 34th fight she took it from me. Now I just took it from her and am
honored to go out on top.
I do salute you, Lady Deanjli. I pray the healing powers have hastened you to a
full recovery and may glory always be yours. The experience factor was in my favor
and you were a most worthy and skilled opponent.
I hope the time I was here has given the arena some added life. I know I
enjoyed the LIRIN KIV AIMED BLOW CHALLENGE 2002 and thank all the warriors and
managers who participated. All Aimed Blows should come to Lirin Kiv and prove their
mettle on our sands.
Let us all stand and raise our blades and mugs and salute Livia, the greatest
Spymaster on Ghea! Well done, m'lady. Keep up the great work.
Now it is off to Primus where I am sure I will find that my skills are lacking.
I will duel there for 6 months. If it goes poorly there, it will be through the gate
and then retirement. We shall see what transpires.
It has been an honor to be here. With Lord Protectors such as you, chaos will
never prevail in our lands!
Lord Protector Bellerophon

The Council of Lords
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
What ho, and other words of greeting. Anybody notice it's beginning to get HOT
around here? Must be something in the air, like maybe the sun.... Or the Split, and
the associated shortened and heated tempers, perhaps. Because the Split has, indeed,
moved amongst us since the last time we met. Familiar faces have departed from the
upper ranks, making room for a few warriors to rise to new heights. And all those
newly active Sand Dancers at the bottom to provide stepping stones....
Scarlet Knights was avoided by Dark Toads. Cyladia was most challenged.
Taken all together, this was not a great day for Lirin Kiv. Only twenty-four
fights, of which the amazing total of FOUR were challenge matches. Eight standbys
fought, which means only forty active warriors here. Not a great number, is it? Not
likely to impress the Commission if they decided to cut costs a little more.
We start the day with a succession of, I think seven Sand Dancers matched with
standbys, which suggests that they were NOT needed to provide competition in the
lower levels and they might want to just... go home again. Think what a chance you
might be losing, you other managers--the Sand Dancers went 2-5 against the standbys
today; they should be easy meat! Bring on your novice Protectors!
Moving on to fights with slightly more interest, we get: TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-
2777) (48-41-4,179) of SAND DANCERS fought KYRLANIA (70-2327) (53-67-1,119) of
SCARLET KNIGHTS. TORYN TYL DAGEDA narrowly defeated KYRLANIA in a 2 minute bout. No
doubt this makes a pleasant change. The winning, I mean.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (43-89-2,176) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought WINSTON (75-
2600) (33-8-0,166) of DARK TOADS. THE QUICKLING was luckily beaten by WINSTON in a
crowd pleasing 5 minute bloody brawl. You wouldn't think someone could bleed heavily
for five minutes and still walk out under his own power, would you?
IT'S A BOY (78-841) (73-67-3,207) of BAD NEWS fought ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (33-
62-2,160) of THE DRAGON FIST. IT'S A BOY overpowered ZALMARDARIN in an action packed
1 minute uneven struggle. Battle of the silent types, who cares?
TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (54-58-0,193) of SAND DANCERS fought JAMMIES (74-2829) (47-
42-1,170) of DARKLINGS. TAIRIKIA handily defeated JAMMIES in a 1 minute uneven
fight. It's the first time I've seen a fight won QUITE that way, but it shows you
how handy it can be to have the deftness of an aimed blow! I wouldn't have thought
of untying THAT to win the fight.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (42-50-0,193) of THE DRAGON FIST fought RUSTLING BREEZE
(33-6478) (23-17-1,157) of THE WASTING FIELD. CORT NIGHTJEWEL was devastated by
RUSTLING BREEZE in a 1 minute mismatched bout. In fact, Rustling blew him away.
Good cess.
DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (64-54-0,205) of SAND DANCERS fought GOJIRO (107-31)
(0-0-0,220) of Bored Fans. DEANJLI TYL RHU devastated GOJIRO in an exciting 1 minute
brutal mismatched conflict. Our last standby fight, also a Sand Dancer, making them
3-5 against standbys over all today. What a bunch, eh?
EYES IN FLOWER (65-2960) (78-66-1,190) of GENERAL MAYHEM fought TALON WARSMITH
(99-101) (44-75-7,163) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. EYES IN FLOWER defeated TALON WARSMITH in
an exciting 2 minute match. Again, neither of these turkeys is going to make a
comment, so we ignore them and pass on.
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (46-70-0,197) of DARKLINGS fought NAPPER LEON (65-2153) (92-
134-1,181) of GENERAL MAYHEM. NIGHTCAP overpowered NAPPER LEON in a popular 1 minute
uneven match. Hmm, could we take "nightcap" to mean "something that puts people to
sleep"? Because it seems to have worked today.
NIGHTINGALE (74-2423) (72-81-1,219) of DARKLINGS fought BLEYS (82-13278) (20-4-
2,181) of TOADS OF AMBER. NIGHTINGALE vanquished BLEYS in an action packed 1 minute
one-sided duel. Given the experience differential, no one was surprised by this.
Good try, though, Bleys.
PHETMOLGE (37-1555) (124-135-1,211) of UP TO NO GOOD fought SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-
513) (50-46-0,181) of THE DRAGON FIST. PHETMOLGE handily defeated SMOLDER DARKSUN in
an action packed 2 minute uneven fight. If Phetmolge defeated him "handily," that
means it wasn't by stepping on him, right? Too bad. I kinda wondered how thing a
dragon's fist could be smushed out.
TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106) (52-49-2,214) of SANGUINE SAINTS fought DARKMOON
BLACKFELL (75-862) (63-55-2,192) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TRAM SATANS BLOOD was savagely
defeated by DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a 3 minute struggle. Darn. I don't suppose
there's much chance of getting Tram to speak? We already know the Scarlet Knight is
a lost cause.
KHORA THE SMALL (78-519) (89-126-3,220) of SAND DANCERS fought NIGHTFALL (74-
2421) (70-83-2,192) of DARKLINGS. KHORA THE SMALL was devastated by NIGHTFALL in a 1
minute uneven brawl. Oops. This cost Khora the top basher's slot again, and if I
were Nightfall (Moonrise) of Darklings, I would avoid dark alleys for a while.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (24-15-1,126) of DARK TOADS challenged I TOL'YA THE PUN (65-
2154) (68-115-1,141) of GENERAL MAYHEM. Up 15. SHYLOCK viciously subdued I TOL'YA
THE PUN in a popular 4 minute Challenge fight. Nothing like a little well-directed
viciousness. I enjoyed it, anyway.
SUNDOWN (75-1222) (34-19-1,176) of ELANTI HUNTERS challenged ALYAHOODI (11-2219)
(43-59-1,178) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. Up 2. SUNDOWN was outlasted by ALYAHOODI in a
crowd pleasing 8 minute Challenge duel. Eight minutes? Oog. But it did give all
three of the fans a chance to refuel at the concession stand. And the bookies tell
me that a well-fed fan bets more, so THEY're happy, too.
SIR ROTHWAIN (78-301) (38-35-0,186) of LOST HOPE INN challenged DEADBOLT (70-
1664) (62-77-2,197) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 11. SIR ROTHWAIN devastated DEADBOLT in
an action packed 3 minute one-sided Challenge duel. It would appear that Sir
Rothwain's hope is not all lost. Okay, I was reaching for that one, but it's late.
WINDSONG (75-1425) (46-25-2,209) of ELANTI HUNTERS TV challenged CYLADIA (51-
1122) (79-90-0,209) of SKAITHVARN. Straight across to ol' Most Challenged Cyladia.
WINDSONG bested CYLADIA in a 2 minute Challenge fight. Good work, Windsong.
And for the title and the Horn, a totally piffling fight: BAT (74-2742) (53-64-
1,217) of DARKLINGS fought DEBATOR (76-1233) (107-119-4,194) of CREW MONIKER. BAT
was dispatched by DEBATOR in a 2 minute Title fight. The way I see it, Debator got
the points to reach the Horn on account of that kill, and that is NOT the kind of
image we want here. Write a column and defend your actions, Debator!

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Lirin Kiv -- Salute! I depart from our glorious arena. I came out of retirement to
be an "enforcer" in case anyone came to try and ruin the LIRIN KIV AIMED BLOW
CHALLENGE 2002. I went 16-10 and was indeed the Champion of the Horn once. A great
honor I will always remember. I have held the title several times in Crysalis and
depart to attempt to once again take the throne there. We shall see how that goes.
Tonight the drinks are on us! -- Lord Protector Fengar II
Hail and farewell, Lord Protector Fengar.
Lirin Kiv -- It has been an enjoyable 18 months here for sure. I am looking at
returing with a few warriors this fall or maybe next spring. Great job, Livia! Keep
the arena going. -- The Icelord
Er... you do realize that Livia is the spy reporter in Crysalis, not here? --
Larkin
Sir Boyd -- And we thought it was your team yo-yoing around us! Doesn't matter now
that Bellerophon got inducted and Fengar is off to Crysalis. We remain your.... --
Overlords
Sundown -- It was an excellent fight. One of these days I'll get some riposte, then
watch out. But any fight with a successful train at the end, is successful I
suppose. -- Winston
And you didn't die. That's always good.
Clemenda -- You're retiring? Alas, say it isn't so. -- Shylock
Alyahoodi -- Wow...that was an unexpected twist. -- Shylock
Lirin Kiv -- Ooops! Bellerophon and I both heaped much praise upon Livia (and she
surely deserves such as we are great fans of hers) but we really wanted to salute the
noble Larkin! Keep up the great work and never let this arena close! It must not.
We will return. -- The Icelord & Overlords
Well, okay. Fare you well in Crysalis and elsewhere. -- Larkin
Bellerophon -- Very well done! -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
P.S. I did not die "broken in spirit." What nonsense! I died cursing the
Infirmarian who had VERY cold hands.
Fengar II -- It's a plot, isn't it? You don't WANT me to have a winning record.
Everyone's down on us Rirorni, which is silly. We didn't ALL fight in that war, and
even if we HAD, you needed it to wake you up. -- Tairikia
P.S. Actually, my tribe voted against the war, and did we ever catch it from the
others once they got moving!
Colredes -- Well, I'm glad you enjoyed that win, so SOMEONE was happy. I didn't
enjoy the loss, although it could have been worse, of course. I could have DIED. --
Toryn tyl Dageda
Eyes in Flower -- I prefer to think of you as... hmm, garlic in need of crushing?
Something along that line, anyway. -- Khora the Small
Remind me not to disturb her while she's cooking.
Dawnfire -- For this--losing to little girls--I came out of retirement? Li Dan must
be really annoyed with me for something, which is odd, because I've been keeping out
of his way. -- Zhal
I guess I'm supposed to savor this win while I can, as once I start drawing managed
warriors, things will probably change. -- Darlina
(curses unfit to print here) -- Sela tyl Varan
By golly, all of the rest of us fought standbys! Where are the other newly arrived
warriors we're supposed to provide match-ups for? -- Xara, Sargen Denjo, Damoreth
Stenn, and Tirya
P.S. If we don't get some competion down here, we'll have to retire again. So get
'em in here and get 'em active!
P.P.S. No, wait! What are we saying here? Stay home and let us go back into
retirement!
Sundown -- If it really bothers you, I'll go back to Darkholm. -- Tairikia
Stile -- Come back as soon as you can. -- Sir Boyd, Elanti Hunters
Kinsi -- I'm just plain stubborn, I guess. Although why I didn't think to draw my
backup weapon for the rest of the fight has me and generations of fighters before me
perplexed. Must be something in the sand. -- Windsong
All those beads, perhaps?
Li Dan -- Are you sure all those stylemasters aren't an indication of your increasing
skill at managing, or the growing abilities of your fighters? -- Sir Boyd
No. It's small arena syndrome.
Nightfall -- That strategy was no good. I guess it's back to the old tried and true
one if I plan to try for the throne this semester. -- Windsong
Debator -- You know, good long fights like that are supposed to help me learn. I bet
you're going to gainsay me just out of habit, aren't you? -- Sundown
P.S. I don't really expect a reply from you. I just like seeing my name in print
however I have to do it.
SUNDOWN! SUNDOWN! SUNDOWN! -- anonymous
Nightingale -- I was distracted by your song. I can't imagine that's legal. -- Sir
Rothwain
Zhal -- The Arenamaster did say "Go," right? Didn't you hear it? -- Dawnfire
Windsong -- Thanks for helping me with my training. (smiling) I hope with that
increased deftness, I'll be able to parry your attacks next time. -- Nightfall
Toryn tyl Dageda -- Thank you, young lady. You wear your armor with a good deal of
style. I wonder if you would like to model some designs of mine at a fashion show
that I am planning? -- Colredes
Bleys -- Neither am I. -- Colredes
Slink -- Whew! I don't know how I pulled that one out of the fire! After I pulled
myself back up to my feet, I felt something in me that just wasn't willing to give
up. But you fought great. -- Bat
Darkmoon Blackfell -- With your better record and your early advantage, I really
didn't expect to win our fight. However, it was a delightful surprise. You're
welcome to a rematch whenever you want it. -- Cyladia
Sir Rothwain -- Do you find it tiresome, being an elf in Lirith Kai? I know there is
a lot of prejudice and pity towards anyone who isn't human. Is that why you became a
gladiator? -- Nightingale
Lin Tirian is more tolerant, being on the border and all.
Napper Leon -- Well, with all the experience between us I thought one of us would
learn something, but no luck. Same old same old. We've got to try new stuff. --
Nightcap
It's a Boy -- I still don't understand why they put you in a team called "Bad News."
Those were a couple of really well-executed hits, by the way. -- Jammies
'Cause he's bad news in the arena?
Bleys -- Twenty-three fights, and you get matched up with me at 258. That's hardly
fair. I wish you better luck next turn. -- Phetmolge
Clemenda -- Good luck. Will you be retiring on the Isle, or do you have land back
home? -- Phetmolge
