The Isle of the Eye, Talahya:
"Okay," Carris Fallstar said, "how do we tackle your two angles? How do we find
where the, uh, 'magical links' that bind the Isle to Alastari are located?"
Everyone turned to look at Moonjumper, who frowned at the ground between her
feet. "I'm not sure," she said slowly, "but I might--only might--be able to identify
them. But it would help a LOT if I had some idea, however vague, of what the
identifying characteristics of such a site WERE."
All eyes now moved to the old wizard. Fizban sighed. "I suppose 'used to be
strongly magical but nothing working there now' is not enough?"
"You suppose correctly!" Carris muttered. "What an idea--used to be...." He
shook his head. "The Isle positively reeks of magic, past and present, and well you
must know it, if you're any kind of wizard at all!"
"Look," Scarlatti interrupted, "I don't know much about magic, but it stands to
reason that the kind we're talking about would be different than, um, regular magic,
and a lot more powerful. There must be some way to tell that?"
There was a silence that seemed long.
Finally Rogan said, "What about the ferry docks? That's where the physical
connections are anchored, so why shouldn't the magical connections be in the same
locations?"
"Sounds good," Scarlatti agreed. "Can you lead us to a ferry dock through this
fog?"
The blind gladiator smiled faintly. "Easily." He set off down the street, and
the others fell in behind him.
The city was mostly silent, and the gladiators met no one as they hurried toward
the shore. There were people about--now and then they could hear footsteps fading
away, or voices just too muffled to be understandable. The fog was so heavy that
even their immediate surroundings seemed unreal. A sound shook the air, heavy as a
mountain, dull as despair. It was repeated six times.
"Gods!" Fizban wiped sweat from his face.
"What was it?" Carris asked, one hand on his sword.
"A clock tolling the hour of seven," Moonjumper guessed, but she sounded unsure
of it. "Maybe the one at the Stronghold Academy...."
"It never sounded like that before," Scarlatti growled.
"Another sign of the differences here and now, wherever and whenever here and
now is." Rogan pulled his cloak a little more snugly around himself, though the
evening was no colder now than it had been an hour ago. Or maybe it was colder. It
was impossible to be sure.
Sooner than they expected, the cobbles underfoot changed to planks, and the
smell of the air changed from stone and fog to mud and fish and water.
Carris Fallstar stopped and sniffed, then drew in a lungful of air and seemed to
taste it slowly. "Salt water, I could swear it smells like salt water," he muttered.
"But the lake is fresh!" Scarlatti protested.
"But is this the lake we remember?" Fizban asked. "I doubt it."
The Isle of the Eye, Lirin Kiv:
The carriage jolted as though the pavement had suddenly ended, rolled a few feet
farther, and stopped. After a moment, there was a creaking shift as the driver
climbed down. Shylock glimpsed his lantern moving through the fog, going ahead past
the horses, then coming back.
The face that appeared at the window was white, eyes round with disbelief. "The
road is lost," the driver said hoarsely.
Shylock frowned at him. "You mean YOU are lost--"
"No! I swear, I was following the road right along, and then it...it just
wasn't there anymore!"
Shylock looked hard at the driver and decided the man wasn't lying. He might be
mistaken, but he believed what he was saying. And if he wasn't mistaken.... Well,
better to find out for himself, the gladiator decided. He unlatched the door and
stepped down from the carriage. "Wait here," he said over his shoulder to Clemenda.
"Not hardly!" She climbed down after him.
The driver held up his lantern, swinging it from side to side, which set shadows
swooping wildly. Shylock took the lantern away from him and held it steady.
It was true. A pace behind the rear wheels of the carriage were the flat stones
of the roadway. Under the wheels and ahead was rocky dirt and tangled grasses and no
sign that there'd ever been a road.
"Amazing," Shylock murmured, "this is something quite without precedent, so far
as I know. I wonder what else has changed?"
"Don't say that!" Clemenda looked around fearfully. "I like things to be
ordinary," she whispered, "no surprises...."
"It would appear that surprises are the name of the entertainment tonight,"
Shylock countered. "Still.... Driver, take us back the way we came, to Lirin Kiv."
The man hurried to climb back onto the box as Shylock assisted Clemenda into the
body of the carriage again. The horses were turned, and they went rumbling back onto
the paving and southward...or at least, back. No telling if it was still south.
Shylock leaned out the window to watch ahead. Even in this fog, it should be
possible to see the lighted tower of the Temple of Mantor for a fair distance.
Judging the current speed of the horses against the pace at which they had come out,
it should be possible to see it now.
But he didn't see it.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Hail, Lirith Kai,
That was a well-fought match, Debator! I was truly surprised when the Lord
Protectors called the fight in my favor. To the arena at large (at small?), the last
thing I'm going to do as your new Champion is to croon about how I deserve to be here
(although this chair does in fact compliment my hair color nicely). My TV challenge
is only an ADM class victory, and I can hardly expect to triumph over the eligibles
in the ranks. This turn I have decided that I won't issue any challenges or avoids.
(Actually, my manager is too scatterbrained recently to remember to put in a strategy
for me.) So take your shot. Should I remain here next cycle, I will more actively
seek to hold my position!
Windsong
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Okay, here it is the end of the week again, and more fights. Kinda down, having
nothing to look forward to but fights, don't you think? Some people made the effort
to write a few words, let us know they're still alive, we're still alive, and the
world goes on. Others were too busy, for one or another reason, probably quite valid
reasons, but sometimes it just annoys the liver out of me anyway. 'Course, I don't
expect everyone to speak up, but the sometimes-yes-sometimes-no people get me down,
when they're in the no-personals stage. Or maybe it's the weather, which has been
nothing to celebrate. A couple of days ago, it almost looked like it might possibly,
eventually rain, but we just got wind and a few sprinkles. Made the dust smell good,
but the farmers are not happy. Or maybe they are, it's hard to tell about farmers.
Maybe they want to get the onions out of the fields before they welcome rain? I have
to admit that I can feel more interest toward an onion in the kitchen than one in the
field.
Is this enough socializing, and now I should talk about fights? I could
probably come up with a few more general comments, if y'all want. Let me know.
And on to the fights, which is why we're here, me writing and you reading. Only
twenty-five today, which might be a bad sign. Three standbys fought. Nobody died.
(I hate it when people die in the arena. What do you SAY to them. After all, you
can't hold a proper funeral, because in a couple of days, they're going to be back in
business. But you can't just ignore it, either. Or I can't. It's a dilemma.) Five
challenge matches, NOT for the Horn. Scarlet Knights was avoided, possibly,
according to these notes, on account of their personal hygiene. Or maybe
exasperation. Dark Toads avoided them, perhaps wanting matches where somebody else
would take an interest, too. (By the way, TigToad, thanks for the inside look at
your guildhouse last cycle. I'm sure those of your gladiators who opted to apply for
Adantri citizenship will not regret it.) Tairikia got the most challenges, which may
not be saying much. After all, if Dark Toads did the most avoiding, and issued all
the challenges as well, that looks like Dark Toads may have the only manager who's
REALLY paying attention to things here. One out of eight. And two out of eight for
personals, although a third manager did manage to get his warrior's Champion's column
in. I know things get tough in a person's life sometimes, and I thank those who have
made an effort. ANY effort.
Okay, the fights. Twenty-five isn't all that many, so maybe I should spread
myself a little.
LANIK MUELLER (65-3632) (12-6-2,49) of HOUSE OF CARDS fought TIRYA (46-3594)
(15-21-0,25) of SAND DANCERS. LANIK MUELLER overpowered TIRYA in a 1 minute uneven
duel. It looks to me like Tirya's going to regret taking up fighting here on the
Isle, although she IS being useful. Someone has to hold down the bottom spot, after
all, and besides, she probably teaches well. Here's a question, though, does being
an "exchange student"--she started in Simtakka, I belive, then transfered to Ardivent
when the Simtakka arena was closed (I could tell you tales about THAT!)--make her a
better teacher? Lanik, and any of you others who match against her, let us know,
okay?
SARGEN DENJO (74-2723) (28-12-0,65) of SAND DANCERS fought RIRORNI SOLDIER (107-
3) (0-0-0,30) of Random Fans. SARGEN DENJO subdued RIRORNI SOLDIER in a 1 minute
melee. I don't know if we should really think of the Rirorni Soldier as a FAN,
exactly. He's our janitor, and a veteran of the Rirorni War who decided he liked
civilization better than riding around the plains on a horse. That's good sense, I
wouldn't like riding around the plains on a horse, either. No escape from the
weather in a life like that. Besides, horses are big, and dumb, and they slobber and
step on your feet. Who needs that?
SELA TYL VARAN (74-2897) (15-15-0,55) of SAND DANCERS fought VALLANT (38-4151)
(21-6-1,73) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. SELA TYL VARAN lost to VALLANT in a popular 1
minute fight. I know Li Dan brought these low-ranked warriors in to make a change
for the other teams, but did you ever wonder what these low-ranked warriors think
about being pulled out of a possibly satisfying retirement just to provide target
dummies for other warriors? Will they get bitter and turn to strong drink?
ZHAL (77-1456) (29-41-0,41) of SAND DANCERS fought RIRORNI SOLDIER (107-3) (0-0-
0,30) of Random Fans. ZHAL was overpowered by RIRORNI SOLDIER in an exciting 1
minute gory uneven fight. I don't know if this is the same Rirorni Soldier that
Sargen Denjo beat, or some other one (they all look alike to me), but you've got to
wonder what Zhal was up to last night to make such a poor showing today. Carousing,
maybe, but I wish I knew where he found good carousing spots here in Lirin Kiv.
There must BE some, but they sure aren't out on the main street.
XARA (78-2254) (16-8-0,13) of SAND DANCERS fought MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP (1-6882)
(17-11-0,45) of LADY OF THE GLEN. XARA viciously subdued MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP in a
popular 2 minute brutal contest. Well, I can see why Xara was so desperate for a win
that she got vicious--that starting rank of 13! Vicious, okay, but whyfore the
brutality, eh? What has Marian done to deserve this treatment? Was it something she
said?
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (47-71-0,179) of DARKLINGS fought KYRLANIA (70-2327) (54-68-
1,148) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTCAP beat KYRLANIA in an action packed 2 minute fray.
Granting I'm biased, I explained that, didn't I? Granting that, this was a ho-hum
fight, with neither manager paying attention and the warriors not really having their
hearts in the effort. Of course, not having your heart in the battle might be a good
thing, save you getting stabbed in it.
SUNDOWN (75-1222) (34-21-1,165) of ELANTI HUNTERS fought ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-
6232) (22-18-1,176) of SPLIT INFINITY. SUNDOWN was devastated by ROBERTO LEATHAM in
an action packed 2 minute one-sided bout. Sundown, I don't want you to take this to
heart. Roberto devastates everybody. Well, everybody female. It's that Latin
charm. He doesn't mean anything against you. Of course, he doesn't mean anything
FOR you, either. He's always like this.
SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513) (51-47-0,183) of THE DRAGON FIST fought RIRORNI CAPTAIN
(107-26) (0-0-0,200) of Random Fans. SMOLDER DARKSUN was overpowered by RIRORNI
CAPTAIN in a 1 minute mismatched fight. Well, I know THIS isn't the same Rirorni
Soldier, THIS one is a damned clever fighter, and a lot more on the ball than either
Smolder Darksun or his manager seem to be lately. I know there are warriors here in
Lirin Kiv who are not enthusiastic about the idea of the Dragon Fist-Scarlet Knight
crew pulling up their socks and fighting like they mean to win, but I gotta say, that
would be a relief. It's WORSE watching them wander out and just go through the
motions.
ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (34-63-2,189) of THE DRAGON FIST fought ZALGOR PRIGG (82-
15204) (20-8-0,172) of MUTANT LEAGUE II. ZALMARDARIN was overpowered by ZALGOR PRIGG
in an exciting 1 minute one-sided bout. Another Dragon Fist warrior who just doesn't
seem to care anymore. You know, we might want to get some drug testing for these
people. This apathy hardly seems natural. They used to be quite competitive.
DEBATOR (76-1233) (108-120-5,202) of CREW MONIKER fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-
196) (42-52-0,170) of THE DRAGON FIST. DEBATOR devastated CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a 1
minute mismatched brawl. The third Dragon First loss in a row. This is depressing.
Maybe they should just RETIRE.
NAPPER LEON (65-2153) (93-135-1,193) of GENERAL MAYHEM fought THE QUICKLING (70-
1669) (43-91-2,162) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NAPPER LEON vanquished THE QUICKLING in a 1
minute one-sided fray. Somehow I'd pictured The Quickling as having a worse record
than that, but he must be around thirty percent. I'll admit I sometimes wonder how
he ever made it to the Isle, and other times I wonder even more why he bothers to go
on fight.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (48-43-1,181) of DARKLINGS fought EYES IN FLOWER (65-2960)
(80-66-1,203) of GENERAL MAYHEM. JAMMIES was overpowered by EYES IN FLOWER in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided duel. I gotta tell you, Jammies, the grass skirt
is a mistake. I don't care if you ARE vactioning on a tropical island. Also,
experience tells me that if you want to do well in your adventure, it would be a good
thing if you won more fights. Once that winning record goes, all sorts of horrible
things might happen to you.
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (50-41-4,201) of SAND DANCERS fought CYLADIA (51-
1122) (79-92-0,189) of SKAITHVARN. TORYN TYL DAGEDA devastated CYLADIA in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched bout. Looks like Toryn still hasn't gotten over her
snit--she won't say what upset her, but we can speculate, can't we?--but at least she
isn't killing her opponents at the moment. When she went hog-wild into that killing
spree (relatively speaking), she was a very scary lady.
RUSTLING BREEZE (33-6478) (24-18-1,182) of THE WASTING FIELD fought TALON
WARSMITH (99-101) (45-76-7,171) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. RUSTLING BREEZE was devastated
by TALON WARSMITH in a 1 minute one-sided battle. And a Scarlet Knight finally wins
one. Speak up and telling him not to DO that, Rustling. I was kinda looking for an
oh-fer cycle for the Scarlet Knights gang; I even had a little bet about it.
ALIX (74-2701) (25-12-0,198) of CHEYSULI & LIR fought BAT (74-2742) (54-65-
1,195) of DARKLINGS. ALIX demolished BAT in a crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched
match. His name may be Bat, but people treat him like the ball. Or whatever other
metaphor you want to use here. Myself, I think his biggest mistake was letting
Colredes advise him on his clothing. After that orange and blue thing with the
uneven hem, nobody takes him seriously.
NIGHTFALL (Moonrise) (74-2421) (71-84-2,197) of DARKLINGS fought DARKMOON
BLACKFELL (75-862) (64-56-2,199) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTFALL (Moonrise) was
overpowered by DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a popular 1 minute uneven match. A conflict of
names, here? A warrior who sees herself as "Moonrise" is BOUND to be at a
disadvantage against a "Darkmoon." A clear conceptual conflict.
ALYAHOODI (11-2219) (44-60-1,186) of HOLY SLAUGHTER fought KHORA THE SMALL (78-
519) (90-127-3,201) of SAND DANCERS. ALYAHOODI was vanquished by KHORA THE SMALL in
a 2 minute one-sided duel. Let this be a lesson to you, Alyahoodi, never stand in
the way of a Fox Woman who has her sights set on something, such as being acclaimed
Top Basher.
DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (66-54-0,226) of SAND DANCERS fought TRAM SATANS BLOOD
(65-1106) (53-50-2,203) of SANGUINE SAINTS. DEANJLI TYL RHU vanquished TRAM SATANS
BLOOD in a 1 minute one-sided duel. This is one Sand Dancer who's getting dangerous
on the sands. I have HEARD, but can't confirm, that when Simtakka arena closed, her
best friend went into retirement and pretty much vanished from mortal ken, and Miss
Rhu just THREW herself into the martial arts to escape the loneliness. Can anyone
confirm or refute this?
IT'S A BOY (78-841) (75-67-3,217) of BAD NEWS fought DEADBOLT (70-1664) (63-78-
2,200) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. IT'S A BOY savagely defeated DEADBOLT in an action packed
2 minute gruesome melee. It almost seems a shame to insult these two warriors,
however much they may deserve it, because they aren't paying attention. Not only are
they not paying attention to my spy report, they aren't paying attention to the job
on hand, which is arena fighting. What a waste of effort, especially on a hot day
like this.
Ah, the first challenge match of the day! FRIAR TUCK (1-7105) (17-4-0,27) of
DARK TOADS challenged DARLINA (74-2995) (17-9-2,69) of SAND DANCERS. Up a lot, hmm,
how about... 42? FRIAR TUCK devastated DARLINA in a popular 2 minute uneven
Challenge brawl. Now, there's a warrior (Darlina) who is not going to be thrilled by
this morning's effort. What I say is, if she can't beat Tuck, she DESERVES to have
him preach at her while she's being patched up in the Infirmary. Maybe next time,
she'll try harder.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (25-16-1,132) of DARK TOADS challenged I TOL'YA THE PUN (65-
2154) (68-117-1,136) of GENERAL MAYHEM. Up 4. SHYLOCK devastated I TOL'YA THE PUN
in a popular 3 minute one-sided Challenge contest. While I will admit that
devastating I Tol'ya is not difficult--all you need is a few stale jokes and a good
memory for the punchline--it's always fun to watch. I just love the way he stands
there with his mouth open trying to figure out why his joke went flat. Maybe if he'd
get a new joke, he'd do better, but after all these years, eight, maybe? after all
these years, he is still telling the same old joke.
WINSTON (75-2600) (34-9-0,175) of DARK TOADS challenged NIGHTINGALE (74-2423)
(73-82-1,189) of DARKLINGS. Up 14. WINSTON unbelievably bested NIGHTINGALE in a
popular 4 minute Challenge match. Okay, this is silly. "Unbelievable." Bah. Who
doesn't believe it? I believe it, and even the bookies wouldn't offer odds against
Winston.
VELOXI (38-4233) (11-4-0,44) of DARK TOADS TV challenged DAMORETH STENN (65-
6105) (24-22-0,69) of SAND DANCERS. Up 25. VELOXI devastated DAMORETH STENN in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge duel. Is it the X? Does that X in Veloxi's name turn
into a veritable wall of spinning blades and wipe out an opponent in the shortest
order? I have it on good authority that Damoreth, though doubtless a worthy man in
many ways, graduated from a very small arena which didn't give him much of a
challenge. That kind of thing can get a warrior into trouble once he hits the Isle.
BLEYS (82-13278) (20-6-2,178) of TOADS OF AMBER TV challenged TAIRIKIA (51-4247)
(55-59-0,196) of SAND DANCERS. Up 18. This was our "Most Challenged" fight. BLEYS
was bested by TAIRIKIA in a 2 minute Challenge fight. What can I say? These
Delarquans are tough and mean, and she wants a winning record. But I can and will
congratulate Bleys on having a TV challenge and using it.
And for the title, a random match: WINDSONG (75-1425) (48-25-2,223) of ELANTI
HUNTERS fought PHETMOLGE (37-1555) (126-135-1,229) of UP TO NO GOOD. WINDSONG was
devastated by PHETMOLGE in a 1 minute mismatched Title match. A good try, Windsong,
and we'll miss you at the top. Our thanks for taking the time to write a column this
week. (And if Phetmolge doesn't get his act together and write us a column next
week, my comments will scorch the paper they're printed on.)

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
My experience with the online maps, is that they don't include Lirith Kai. Maybe I
just missed them the first few times I looked.... -- TigToad
I'll see what I can do.
Clemenda -- Quite alright. You are too fine a lady to be forced to compete in the
arena. -- Shylock
Sigh. I went 0-6! 0-6?! I cannot handle that level of incompetence from my
warriors. Apparently, granting them freedom was a huge mistake. One would think
motivated self-interest would keep their records up.... -- TigToad
Phetmolge -- I hacked and hacked at your ankles, and then you wobbled on your feet a
bit and stepped on me. Next time I'll try some other approach, but I don't want next
time to be soon! -- Tairikia
Rustling Breeze -- This winning is getting to be a habit. Quite enjoyable, too,
but...I was Eligible for Primus at the last Split, and I fear what it will mean at
the next. -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Winston -- "Tired" does not mean "out of the fight," it appears. It amazes me that
you lost. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Cyladia -- You shouldn't have kept going till the herald stopped you. I was set to
win anyway, although my TEAMMATE let me down over the question of Phetmolge winning,
too. -- Khora the Small, top basher even if the Commission doesn't realize it
A captured pirate king? Why would anyone WANT to capture a pirate king? I'm sure
he's in the way around the house, and his manners leave something to be desired. --
Xara
So he's not a GENTLEMAN pirate then? -- Ed.
R.O.U.S. -- Sorry, but I don't do rats. No way, no how. -- Zhal
Amazingly, the unemployed person taught me four skills. I hadn't expected that. --
Darlina
Friar Tuck -- Oh, my! Another win, and I'll have a winning record! Amazing, and
totally unexpected. Thank you. -- Sela tyl Varan
Veloxi -- You are weakened by the burden of carrying both a "V" and an "X" in your
name. Give them up. -- Sargen Denjo
Marian of Ravenskeep -- I was not going for a kill! Against a sweet young thing like
you? No way. I just wanted to end the fight quickly so you could get out of the
heat. -- Damoreth Stenn
But what if I don't WANT to fight a Rirorni soldier? -- Tirya
TigToad -- Good work. -- Li Dan
Larkin -- I'm not savage! I'm really not. I don't know what it is that comes over
me in the arena. -- Toryn
TigToad -- Thank you. We, um, didn't mean to hog the wins, you know. You can
probably figure out how to beat us rather easily. -- Xara, Sargen Denjo, Damoreth

To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
