Rithakar:
Onuphre had disarmed the man and was now holding him in an iron grip to prevent
him bleeding to death from the stump. Seeing that he had his companions' attention
again, the Shew said, "I thought we might want to ask this fellow some questions."
"What an excellent idea!" Tamea Soulkeeper purred. She moved closer to the
Shew's prisoner and examined him curiously. "He appears to be of a race unknown in
Alastari," she murmured, then glanced at the blood leaking from the stump of the
man's arm. It was an unusual shade of red, almost coppery. "Of an unknown species
entirely. I wonder where the Folstrom found him?"
"Stop wondering and ask your questions," Onuphre suggested. "He isn't going to
last long, as much blood as he's lost."
Tamea gave the Shew a look that would have put a dagger to shame for sharpness
and addressed a brisk question to the prisoner in a language none of the other
gladiators recognized.
The man stared at her blankly, then mumbled a few words.
The witch frowned and rapped out another question in what sounded like a
different language.
The man shook his head feebly.
"Those other people make my head spin," Debby Tonte announced. She was glaring
at the main body of lancers, who were still rippling and fading in and out of
solidity. "They make me feel like I forgot the umbrella in my drink, or, you know,
no olives. I don't like it."
Bellerophon and Mr. Testosterone turned to look at the larger group again. It
didn't appear to offer much danger, if the lancers couldn't even rejoin the active
universe.
"That sphere the banner-man is carrying!" Mr. Testosterone said suddenly.
"Could that be the Eye we're looking for?"
Ultraist* squinted at it and nodded once. "It could be," the big Aruaki
admitted. "It looks pretty much the way the Eye looked--if it was the Eye--when I
saw it last. But how would they come to have it?"
"If that's the Eye of the South," Bellerophon answered briskly, "it doesn't
matter how they got it. We have to get it back."
This declaration gathered the attention of the whole group that had originally
set out from the Isle. After the delays and disappointments experienced so far, the
possibility of actually being able to accomplish their task was invigorating.
"How do we get it from them?" E.A. Polecat demanded. "They aren't all here, I
mean, they're not in this world completely, and if they can't touch us, we can't
touch them, right?"
"We can get right in among them with our swords drawn," Skirnir suggested.
Holding his blade at the ready, he moved forward as he spoke.
The others rushed to join him, out of loyalty and duty and from a simple desire
to have, finally, a clear fight that they could win. Because they were going to win.
At their near approach, the lancers seemed to get a firmer grip on reality and become
solid, or nearly so, but at the same time many of them began to age with appalling
swiftness, as though all the years they had slept through were falling on them at
once. Skirnir, who found himself paired with Black Skull, the retired Rocani Lord
Protector, headed for the banner man who had what was probably the Eye of the South.
Belerophon and Natasha Knight targeted the leader of the troop, and the other
gladiators spread out to do as much damage as they could.
The man with the banner and the Eye shouted when he found himself beset by two
warriors, and others rallied to his side, including the leader. The battle was brief
but fierce, the end inevitable. Though they had the advantages of numbers and of
being mounted, the lancers were weary and confused, and when one of them took a
deadly wound, he rapidly collapsed into a pile of bones that crumbled to dust.
Black Skull looked over the seen of the battle, shaken. Nothing remained of the
men they'd fought, who had fought them with the fierceness of desperation, but dust
drifting away on the wind, and a few pieces of age-weakened metal--spearheads, a
helmet or two, a buckle.... "That was..." he shook his head, unable to think of a
word to describe his feeling.
"It was as bad, in its way, as though we'd lost," Bellerophon said grimly. "But
we won." He stepped carefully through the dust to the spherical stone, white and
dead as the moon, that might be all that remained of the Eye of the South.
"Better not to touch it!" Ultraist advised, coming up beside him.
"Right! Remember what it did to that poor dragon!" Debby Tonte added, joining
them. She rummaged in her straw bag and pulled out a large towel. "Roll it into
this, so you can carry it safely. We can take it back to HER, and then forget about
it. And the sooner the better, too!"
*Ultraist is now known as Sylvester Frothingslosh.

Talahya?
Scarlatti knelt on the stony beach and scooped a hand through the water, sniffed
it, then touched his tongue to it. "Salt. This is weird. Only something really
strange could change a freshwater, inland lake to salt water."
"Unless," Fizban repeated, "it's not the lake we remember."
"Well, that'd be pretty strange, too."
Rogan cleared his throat. "That isn't all that's strange," the blind man said.
"You sense it, too?" Moonjumper asked. "But of course, you would--"
"We aren't in Talahya," Rogan confirmed. "At least, in no part of Talahya I've
ever encountered, and we were walking a known route. I sense a different pattern of
buildings and open spaces around us."
"We passed through some sort of Gate," Moonjumper added. "I sense quite a
different pattern of energies around us, as well. So what do we do now?" She turned
to Fizban and Carris Fallstar. "How do we go about investigating... whatever it is
that makes this not the Isle?"
Before the old wizard could answer, Carris said, "We were headed for the ferry
docks on the Isle, and we've come to a shore. Maybe there are ferries near here.
Let's find 'em."
"Why?" Scarlatti asked.
"Why not?" the elf countered. "It's a place to start."
Lirin Kiv?
The town that finally emerged from the fog bore some resemblance to Lirin Kiv,
but it was definitely not the Adantri town. The architecture they could see was
similar in style, but different in detail, the streets were laid out in different
curves and lined with different trees, some of them totally unfamiliar to Shylock and
Clemenda. Where the Temple of Mantor should have been was a temple to... somebody
else. By the symbols on the facade, some kind of solar deity, Shylock thought.
The carriage came to a stop, and the driver dismounted again, to peer anxiously
through the window at his passengers. "I don't know where we are," he admitted, "but
it's nowhere I've been before. Now what?"
"See if there's anything like an arena here," Shylock ordered. "If there is,
it'll be a point of contact, I think."
"Where do I look?"
Shylock bit back an exasperated comment which wouldn't help. The man was
stupid, but it would do no good to rub his nose in that dismal fact. "Look where you
would expect to find the Lirin Kiv arena, if this were Lirin Kiv and that was the
Temple of Mantor."
The driver clambered back onto his perch and set the horses in motion.
"Something this strange, Lady Sheila would have to know about it, wouldn't she?"
Clemenda asked. "I've always understood that she knows about every bit of magic
that's performed on the Isle."
"Maybe she's not paying attention," Shylock answered. His eyes gleamed at the
possibilities opened up by Sheila not paying attention. "She's got other things on
her mind, I suppose--the decline in the Arcanum and all that...." He frowned
slightly. "Wherever we are, THIS Arcanum hasn't declined!"

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Here we are again, hot, sweaty, and exhausted from watching all these sword boys
and girls fight out there on the sands. At least, I'm exhausted by it. And I notice
that our longest fight was a mere four minutes, which says to ME that you all were
exhausted, or too hot, to waste time out there. Suits me.
House of Cards was most avoided by Dark Toads. This makes sense, as the
managers of these two groups, Zalgor Prigg and TigToad, were apparently the only
managers paying attention today. TigToad and his warriors wrote personals, Zalgor
Prigg didn't, so we hope the Toads won most of the fights. Hey, nobody said I had to
be impartial!
And speaking of not being impartial, you notice our Champion of the Horn didn't
write a column? And this despite being reminded on three separate occasions in the
last two weeks. I think it's because Phetmolge is a Troll. Yeah, I know that his
census form says he's an Elf, but seriously, does anybody believe that? Eight feet
tall, gray and scaly, no slightest physical grace... trust me, he's a Troll.
According to the Commission (and I quote): Trolls are large, vaguely gorilla-
like bipeds of dubious intelligence. They are not mammalian, but not exactly
reptilian either; they are warm-blooded, with tough, pebbly hide and sparse, coarse
hair. They have formidable fangs and enormous strength. They do not turn to stone
in daylight. They appear to be right on the borderline of sentience; they can be
taught language, but they do not possess it themselves.
Which means our Champion of the Horn gives new depth to the term "not too
bright," and naturally, we can't expect a column from somebody who can barely talk,
much less write.
Reverting to more interesting topics (people with some brains here and there),
Tairikia was most challenged. I don't know if the Commission statistician just
flipped a coin on this, or if she actually got two challenges.
Longest fight was four minutes, I said that, didn't I? Twenty-six fights in
all. Seven challenge matches, with the challenges all coming from the hands of
TigToad and Zalgor Prigg, if I am not in error. Two standbys fought. One warrior
died.
Not a lot to report, is there? It's the heat.
TIRYA (46-3594) (15-22-0,23) of SAND DANCERS fought FRIAR TUCK (1-7105) (18-4-
0,65) of DARK TOADS. TIRYA handily defeated FRIAR TUCK in an exciting 1 minute
uneven bout. Tirya was probably the most excited person in the arena when this fight
ended. Is this her first win over a managed warrior here? Well, regardless, this
one was enough to hoist her out of the foundation position (she got, um, 39 points
for the win), and good cess to her.
DAMORETH STENN (65-6105) (24-23-0,48) of SAND DANCERS fought VALLANT (38-4151)
(22-6-1,75) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. DAMORETH STENN was vanquished by VALLANT in a 1
minute uneven bout. And there goes Damoreth's winning record. I wonder how many
times a day on fight day he wishes he was still retired, sitting on a rock north of
Dal Shang and fishing? Sounds like a good life to me, a better one, anyway, than
being a target dummy here on the Isle.
DARLINA (74-2995) (17-10-2,45) of SAND DANCERS fought R.O.U.S. (107-4) (0-0-
0,50) of Local Louts. DARLINA was vanquished by R.O.U.S. in an exciting 1 minute
one-sided fight. Doubtless Darlina will tell us that she "doesn't do rats." But
this is a SPECIAL rat, Darlina, it's one of the bookies! Don't ask me how they chose
which one to send out, but trust me, this is a bookie. You should beat him up with
vim and enthusiasm, as this may be your only chance.
ZHAL (77-1456) (29-42-0,25) of SAND DANCERS fought VELOXI (38-4233) (12-4-0,69)
of DARK TOADS. ZHAL was overpowered by VELOXI in a 1 minute gory one-sided duel.
Apparently a V and an X together are stronger than a Z. Which gives Zhal the not-so-
coveted founadation spot.
XARA (78-2254) (17-8-0,40) of SAND DANCERS fought CAPTURED PIRATE KING (107-2)
(0-0-0,30) of Local Louts. XARA handily defeated CAPTURED PIRATE KING in an exciting
1 minute one-sided contest. Do you suppose Xara has some personal reason for her
distinct animosity to Captured Pirate Kings? Was she scared by one in the cradle?
Did she lose a loved one, or a fortune, to a pirate? Who can tell?
BRAND (82-13289) (7-6-0,27) of TOADS OF AMBER III fought SARGEN DENJO (74-2723)
(29-12-0,67) of SAND DANCERS. BRAND vanquished SARGEN DENJO in an action packed 2
minute gruesome one-sided match. And there's Brand making a firm effort not to hang
around the bottom of the rankings. I commend your good sense on that, Brand. If you
HAVE to be a gladiator, don't be bottom-ranked. It leads to all kinds of
humiliations, such as being forced to stand in the corner to drink at the Red Sands,
always getting bumped to the end of lines, and so on.
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (54-69-1,150) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought I TOL'YA THE PUN (65-
2154) (68-118-1,127) of GENERAL MAYHEM. KYRLANIA was bested by I TOL'YA THE PUN in a
popular 1 minute bout. If Kyrlania's manager doesn't wake up and teach her some new
jokes, she's going to be a sucker for every old fossil lurking in Lirin Kiv, and
we've got a high proportion of them, too.
CYLADIA (51-1122) (79-93-0,185) of SKAITHVARN fought SUNDOWN (75-1222) (34-22-
1,160) of ELANTI HUNTERS. CYLADIA overpowered SUNDOWN in a crowd pleasing 4 minute
bloody one-sided match. Our longest fight. How do they do it? I know people say
that women have more endurance than men, but... in this heat? Surely they could have
decided sooner between themselves who should win. Oh, well, at least I was sitting
in the shade with a glass of iced tea.
TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106) (53-51-2,193) of SANGUINE SAINTS fought KHORA THE
SMALL (78-519) (91-127-3,208) of SAND DANCERS. TRAM SATANS BLOOD subdued KHORA THE
SMALL in a 2 minute bout. Oops! Another rock on the road to top basher-dom.
Everyone is warned to steer clear of Khora for the next couple of weeks, as she's
likely to be in a foul (fouler?) mood.
DEBATOR (76-1233) (109-120-5,204) of CREW MONIKER fought THE QUICKLING (70-1669)
(43-92-2,160) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DEBATOR defeated THE QUICKLING in a 2 minute bout.
Not only is the Quickling slow of body, he's slow of mind, as well. No match for a
seasoned Debator. The seasoning (garlic, lemon pepper, and a touch of oregano) was
especially good today, too, if you care about that.
WINDSONG (75-1425) (48-26-2,190) of ELANTI HUNTERS fought CRYSALIS GUARD (107-
29) (0-0-0,200) of Local Louts. WINDSONG overpowered CRYSALIS GUARD in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched brawl. Listen, we've got to do something about this!
Who wants a bunch of dumb guards from Crysalis? Why can't we have our OWN guards?
Oh, right--we're good people and don't need guards to keep us in line. But still.
*PRECIOUS THINGS* (65-3340) (28-23-0,188) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES fought JAMMIES
(74-2829) (48-44-1,180) of DARKLINGS. *PRECIOUS THINGS* was viciously subdued by
JAMMIES in a 2 minute gruesome duel. This is the first time I've seen someone roped
and hog-tied with a blankie in the arena! I'm always up for novel experiences
(within reason), but let's not repeat this one, okay?
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (51-41-4,209) of SAND DANCERS fought ZALMARDARIN (78-
312) (34-64-2,173) of THE DRAGON FIST. TORYN TYL DAGEDA handily defeated ZALMARDARIN
in a 1 minute one-sided conflict. Zalmardarin appears to be another warrior well on
his way to fossildom. And Toryn, amazingly enough for a Sand Dancers, seems
determined to hang onto her winning record. What are we coming to?
BAT (74-2742) (54-66-1,190) of DARKLINGS fought ALYAHOODI (11-2219) (44-61-
1,180) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. BAT subdued ALYAHOODI in a crowd pleasing 2 minute gory
match. The move where Bat darted close and mussed up Alyahoodi's hair got a standing
ovation from the crowd. If you chose that moment to step out, as some did, this is
what the roaring was about.
NORMANDY (65-4916) (22-15-3,198) of DOOMSDAY4DOOMCORPS fought NIGHTCAP (74-2745)
(48-71-0,181) of DARKLINGS. NORMANDY was savagely defeated by NIGHTCAP in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute competition. I'm not sure what pleased the crowd on this one.
Maybe when Nightcap grabbed Normandy's helmet and turned it backward on his head?
They like the crude laughs.
NIGHTINGALE (74-2423) (73-83-1,187) of DARKLINGS fought NAPPER LEON (65-2153)
(94-135-1,195) of GENERAL MAYHEM. NIGHTINGALE easily killed NAPPER LEON in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided bout. "Easily killed"? is Napper so old that he fell
asleep in the arena? I've heard of that happening, but not, usually, in one-minute,
exciting fights.
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (71-85-2,190) of DARKLINGS fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196)
(42-53-0,168) of THE DRAGON FIST. NIGHTFALL defeated CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a 2 minute
match. One of the orderlies is a gem collector on the side, and he says that Cort's
jewel is paste. This falls in well with the rumor that the Dragon Fist and Scarlet
Knight crew have been reduced to pawning most of the possessions to keep going here.
It can be a hard life working for a manager who has forgotten you're alive, can't it?
DEADBOLT (70-1664) (63-79-2,197) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought RUSTLING BREEZE (33-
6478) (24-19-1,166) of THE WASTING FIELD. DEADBOLT won victory over RUSTLING BREEZE
in a popular 1 minute duel. You'll note the handicapper didn't consider this a mis-
match? Tells you something, doesn't it?
Ah, the challenge matches, all seven of 'em--
LANIK MUELLER (65-3632) (13-6-2,53) of HOUSE OF CARDS challenged SELA TYL VARAN
(74-2897) (15-16-0,59) of SAND DANCERS. Up 6. LANIK MUELLER handily defeated SELA
TYL VARAN in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Not surprising, but I'm sure Sela
feels the defeat deeply. Somewhere. Have you tried petitioning for a strategy
change, Sela? Your record isn't that bad yet, and you MIGHT reclaim your winning
edge.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (26-16-1,147) of DARK TOADS challenged SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-
513) (51-48-0,177) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 30. SHYLOCK was overpowered by SMOLDER
DARKSUN in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Nothing like ambition to get
your head handed to you on a small shield, is there, Shylock? Good, bold attempt,
though.
WINSTON (75-2600) (35-9-0,190) of DARK TOADS challenged TALON WARSMITH (99-101)
(46-76-7,191) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 1. WINSTON was savagely defeated by TALON
WARSMITH in a 2 minute Challenge competition. Ouch. You're lucky to come out of
that one alive, Winston.
ZALGOR PRIGG (82-15204) (21-8-0,192) of MUTANT LEAGUE II challenged DEANJLI TYL
RHU (76-1970) (67-54-0,238) of SAND DANCERS. Up 46. ZALGOR PRIGG was devastated by
DEANJLI TYL RHU in a 1 minute Challenge fight. I hear that over at the Sand Dancers'
guildhouse, Deanjli has been voted "most likely to be Inducted." Try losing some
fights, kid. It might help.
ALIX (74-2701) (26-12-0,208) of CHEYSULI & LIR challenged IT'S A BOY (78-841)
(76-67-3,225) of BAD NEWS. Up 17. ALIX overpowered IT'S A BOY in a 2 minute
mismatched Challenge duel. We've heard all the jokes about "sending a Boy to do a
man's job," unfortunately, and I'm too hot to think of new ones.
ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232) (23-18-1,193) of SPLIT INFINITY challenged DARKMOON
BLACKFELL (75-862) (65-56-2,211) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 18. ROBERTO LEATHAM
viciously subdued DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a 2 minute Challenge battle. Oooh,
viciously! I love it! You can be vicious to the warriors of non-writing, non-
challenging managers any time you want, Roberto.
BLEYS (82-13278) (20-7-2,178) of TOADS OF AMBER TV challenged TAIRIKIA (51-4247)
(56-59-0,204) of SAND DANCERS. Up 26. BLEYS devastated TAIRIKIA in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. Some people just don't like to lose....
And for the title, the Troll, PHETMOLGE (37-1555) (127-135-1,252) of UP TO NO
GOOD fought the fossil, EYES IN FLOWER (65-2960) (81-66-1,212) of GENERAL MAYHEM.
PHETMOLGE won victory over EYES IN FLOWER in an action packed 1 minute gory Title
duel. Both are equally mute, so who cares? (Hey, I'm an equal oportunity insulter.
You don't pay attention, you can count on an insult sooner or later, doesn't matter
if you've got the Horn.)

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Toryn Tyl Dageda -- Ah, losses happen to all of us sometimes. I try not to make it a
habit, but sometimes I see my opponent stumbling around the stands and I let my guard
down. -- Winston
Sargen Denjo -- Wait, have you been talking to those in Cliffholm? I remember these
conversations about X's and V's back then in my prior arena life. Maybe you have
friends there, I kept trying to explain that the X and the V were the source of my
power.... -- Veloxi
All (Meaning Li Dan really, since I doubt many others read this). -- I am going to
ask Marian to sit out some fights. While my brothers in arms tell me to run her, I
am not enjoying her fights much, so she will sit a while. However, I am bringing in
Brand from my recent graduations to join the sands here and Stile should be back next
turn. -- TigToad
Ah, Marian is going to keep ravens for now, eh?
Bleys -- You need these losses to give you perspective. -- Tairikia
P.S. At least, that's what *I* was told in a like position.
Veloxi -- The evil X, hmm? I like it. I wonder if I could get my name changed to
Damorex? -- Damoreth Stenn
P.S. Or do I have to get a V to go with it?
Friar Tuck -- I know I'm SUPPOSED to be here for you guys to fight, but I would THINK
that I could get some wins, TOO. -- Darlina
Ram Satans Blood -- It makes a puzzle, does it not? Is this a case of your manager
not paying attention, or am I really better than you in the arena? -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Alyahoodi -- Do not DARE to stand in the way of Lirin Kiv's Basher Supreme. -- Khora
the Small but Powerful
Cyladia -- Actually, I never bathe in tubs. It must be "natural" water. -- Toryn tyl
Dageda
Marian of Ravenskeep -- Have you considered giving up this life and just keeping
ravens? -- Xara
So the Rirorni Soldier beat me, what did you expect? I'm a pud, after all. -- Zhal
Vallant -- You are an AMAZING teacher, sir! I thank you. -- Sela tyl Varan
I don't see why Zhal couldn't beat the Rirorni Soldier, unless this is a different
one. This'n was easy. -- Sargen Denjo
It was a different one. -- Zhal
Lanik Mueller -- I think there's something strange going on in the arena. If I could
walk to the Infirmary, why couldn't I keep on fighting? -- Tirya
P.S. Oh, no, don't tell me that my time--I had no CHOICE--in Andoria has weakened
me?
Larkin -- Bitter, yes, turn to strong drink, no. -- Sela tyl Varan
P.S. I notice Li Dan is keeping out of our way. Smart man.
That's why he's a manager and you're a gladiator.
Larkin -- The best carousing spots are by invitation only, and if I told you about
them, I would be uninvited. -- a virtuous Zhal
Now there's a weird concept: a virtuous Zhal? I laugh. -- Tirya
Hmm, I'm a spy reporter, right? I bet I can follow him....
Larkin -- It was the ravens. -- Xara
Nevermore.
Larkin -- Mind your own business. -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
This is my business, toots.

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
