WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
There was a franchise of the Dripping Blade in Talahya, but it wasn't as popular
as it was on the mainland. It was down near the docks, next to the once-popular shop
that sold glowing contact lenses, elevator shoes, padded muscles, and detachable
talons for gladiatorial managers. Some of the old-time spyreporters and a few
gladiators spent their evenings there because the menu was predictable and the
ambience was undemanding.
The newcomer, a massive person muffled in a black woolen cloak, had to crouch to
fit through the doorframe, but was able to straighten up most of the way once inside
the room. He glanced around. Under the very wide-brimmed black slouch hat, his eyes
glinted yellow, but then they might simply be reflecting a bit of the lantern light
that failed to lift the gloom of the smoky common room. Finding no "Please Wait to
be Seated" sign, he chose one of the many empty tables, examined a chair, and then
carefully and gently seated himself upon it.
Presently a buxom waitress with a blonde ponytail swayed over to his table and
said, "Wot'll it be, guv'nor?" She had the same streetwise Harkeny accent as all the
buxom waitresses in all the Dripping Blades.
"Might I see a menu, please?" The newcomer's voice was as deep as the sound of
the earth shifting just before the collapse of a major city, but far more courteous
in tone.
"It's over the bar," replied the serving wench, tossing her head to indicate the
bar with its keeper assiduously polishing the gray wood-like surface.
"What's in the stew?" asked the newcomer, without looking up at the posted
selections.
The waitress had yet to get a look at his face and was beginning to feel a mild
curiosity, though she supposed it was just your usual rotting skull, scaly demon, or
whatever they were running a special on next door. "Just meat and potatoes," she
assured him. "You managers don't touch veggies, the Dripping Blade understands
that."
"What kind of meat?"
"I don't know. They smoke it and salt it at the Dripping Blade plant in Riztab
and we get a crate of it every month or so." Her accent had faded away; she sounded
like an Isle native now. She seemed to notice this fact and added with a wink,
"It'll put hair on yer chest, guv'nor!"
"Bring me a bowl of stew then," said the newcomer.
In a short time he was served a mug of ale, a paper napkin, a spoon and a bowl
of warm, watery stew. Dipping into the bowl, he spooned out a chunk of meat and held
it up in the dim light.
The waitress, who had withdrawn to the bar, got her first good look at his face,
and remarked to the bartender, "I didn't know they sold troll masks next door."
"Well?" asked Khirza the cat-woman, jumping down from the lamppost where she had
been perched when Phetmolge came out of the Dripping Blade. "Is it troll meat, or
not?"
"I can't tell. I've no idea what cooked trollflesh would look or smell like."
He showed her a corked flask. "I asked for a take-home pouch. I want to get it
analyzed at the Academy. You have a friend there, don't you?"
The report from the Stronghold Academy came in the mail nearly two weeks later.
Phetmolge opened the envelope, read the note, then reread it, frowning in
puzzlement....

Somewhere in the Far West:
"She's sick!" The voice was male, unfamiliar, annoyed. The language was
unfamiliar, too, but Shania understood it. Part of her gift for knowing, she
supposed. The gift had declined of late, as a part of the decay of the Arcanum; that
it had come back in part was doubtless significant...of something. She didn't want
to think about it right now. "A sick woman is no use to us!"
Shania kept her eyes closed, stayed relaxed. The man was talking about her, but
she felt no need to discuss her health with a stranger.
"She's sick because she is closely linked with the Arcanum, and the Arcanum is
sick." A different voice, probably male, but older, tireder. "She is less useful
than she would have been a month ago, but there is no value in lamenting what has
passed. And no one else would be of any use at all."
The first voice muttered what was apparently a curse. Footsteps departed.
"I know you are awake," the tired voice said, "and that you can understand me.
You may as well admit it."
Shania opened her eyes. The man looked to be of medium height and might once
have been physically powerful, but all that was left now was broad bone structure and
withered hide. He didn't appear to be of any race known to her, being bronze-skinned
with a brutal beak of a nose, high cheekbones, narrow black eyes, and iron-gray hair.
His mouth was narrow, almost lipless. The dominant characteristics in his face were
a fierce intelligence and an implacable will. He would make a bad enemy.
"What do you want of me?" she asked idly. She thought it unlikely that she
would help this man in anything, but no harm in asking.
"Your aid in healing the Pillar of the West." A gesture indicated something
just out of her line of sight.
She shifted, noting that she was on a narrow pallet rather than a real bed, far
enough to look in that direction. A massive dark stone had been carved into the
likeness of a man squatting and holding his hands cupped against his chest. Held in
the hands was a sphere of crystal, dull gray in color except as flashes of livid
reddish light shivered across it. The Eye of the West, and barely functional.
"I have little power at present," she said. "What can I do that you cannot?"
"Your power is of no value," the man answered flatly. "The stone is dying
because the spirit that inhabits and animates it is dying. As you are the person
mostly closely attuned to it at this time, you are the obvious one to replace the
dying spirit. By the gods' favor, you may survive long enough for us to find and
attune a younger, stronger woman to assume the burden."
Shania had not expected to be so surprised, but that this old man proposed to
sacrifice her to the stone in order to preserve its function for a few days or weeks
longer came as a shock. "Does my position on this make any difference?"
"No."
"Not even if I know of other ways to stabilize the stone? Non-fatal ways?"
"There are no other ways. If you will not accept your role as the honor it is,
you will accept it anyway. The time for choice is long past."
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
My friends and respected opponents,
I am pleased to report that the Dripping Blade does not serve troll meat in its
stew. What exactly is textured soy?
Here I am again, who would have thought it! Alix fought very well despite her
style disadvantage against me, but in the end my ability to dish out damage exceeded
her considerable ability to take it. Do you realize that at this rate, I may soon
have a winning record? It's been a long, long time since I had any hope of that! I
must say I'd gotten into the habit of thinking of gladiating as a rather
discouraging, unpleasant chore, but this "winning" stuff kinda makes you feel good.
Thank goodness I'm merely Primus eligible, because if I actually had to go to Primus
I don't think I'd ever win another arena fight. And I'd miss winning. It's
addictive. Now watch, I'll get my mossy gray butt kicked this time around.
Would anyone like to know how the Commission rated my abilities at the start of
my career? 15-6-21-17-13-5-7. Not a very promising combination, eh? I was
extremely slow and clumsy but when I did hit, my damage was rated "awesome." Before
I maxed out in skills, I received the growth potion which, they say, cost me some
potential skills. I wonder if I would be able to get them back if I go through the
Gate? I still have only an Advanced Expert in parry and a Master in everything else.
Well, now I'm 23-17-24-17-18-5-17, still very slow but my damage rating is now
"unearthly." I'm rather proud of it. I believe I can hit harder than my uncle
Gortch, who is nine and a half feet tall and built like a buffalo.
I've called at the Grey Tower and made an appointment to meet with Lady Greywand
in three months (it's really hard to get an appointment with her). I intend to
discuss trollish civil rights with her and ask her to press the various rulers of
Alastari to at least consider petitions from my people. But in the meantime, I have
decided to enroll myself in a worthwhile and honorable adventure if one is about to
start. Surely the Grey Lady is more likely to listen to someone who has risked his
life for the good of Alastari. Therefore, if anyone is getting ready to go on a
quest please let me know if you have need of a well-swung hammer. Otherwise I'll
just have to find a quest on my own.
May you all fight bravely and learn well!
Phetmolge
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
I thought of saying "Here we are again," but are we? It seems today more like a
case of "Nobody here but us golems." We had no challenges and no avoids. Granted,
we don't often have many, but usually there are a FEW. If I had to guess, I'd say
that nobody fought today who wasn't on maintenance. I suppose I can put it down to
the heat, but it might also be a question of managers too busy getting ready for the
tourney. Not that it matters, unless this distressing condition continues.
The fights, and no comment, because I'm hot, too, although I'm not now preparing
for the tourney, which is over (I'm preparing for Gencon...):

Zalgor Prigg -- Look, I don't have TIME for this stuff. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Normandy -- Yours, of course. -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
P.S. Or Waterloo.
Cyladia -- (grimly) I am the best basher, better than that Troll. Oh, sure, he HITS
harder, but that's just his size. I have more grace, and I WILL PROVE IT. -- Khora
the Small and Determined
Brand -- I hate it when that happens. It completely ruins my day. -- Ghost of Xara
P.S. And I'm still not likely to be allowed to retire, which is even worse.
Lanik Mueller -- You've been in a bathtub? I never would have guessed. -- Zhal
Pirate Kings, pish. Why don't we capture a Robber Baron or somebody like that? --
Darlina
I suppose the Person is Unemployed because he ARGUES with everyone. What a nuisance
that fellow is! -- Sela tyl Varan
I'd really like to know more of what lies behind this Alastarian Deserter. The
concept is intriguing, and I'm sure the tale would be enough to have me burning with
bloodlust. -- Sargen Denjo
P.S. I've never burned with bloodlust before, and I'd like to give it a try....
I don't even want to talk about the Rirorni Soldier. -- Damoreth Stenn
P.S. Though he did have some good jokes.
Friar Tuck -- Hmm, I think I'm getting the range here. This is going much better. --
Tirya
Well, _I_ brought a TV to Lirin Kiv. I can't say much for the dismal performance of
the rest of my teammates...but TigToad said my having sat out for those turns was
worth it. -- Stile
Zhal -- Try a ZV, that may beat a VX...well, I doubt it. I am most magnificent,
after all. -- Veloxi
Sorry folks, this is going to be a sad turn. I returned home from the face only to
notice I had one day to get in my turn. Oops. I put four guys on maintenance just
so that I would run...but too many others need stat or skill changes to their
learning after the tourney. I have dropped two more from my squad for good. Friar
Tuck bored me too much...and Veloxi with all of his precious V's and X's decided to
take service with Zalgor Prigg. I hope he does well with him and I wish him luck. I
am adding two new warriors after this turn to take their place however. -- TigToad
Alix -- That was a brave try...another win for me, though, and a train as well.
Thank you. I have heard that your style isn't well suited to fight mine, and yet you
almost won. Perhaps if you challenge me again you will defeat me and I won't have to
write another column. (smiling) -- Phetmolge
Talon Warsmith -- Thanks for showing me those new techniques in defense and
decisiveness. It was worth the loss, I think. -- Nightcap
Roberto Leatham -- Oh wow, I guess you were hoping to learn something from me.
Sorry. I have a Grandmaster in attack and was really showing off what I knew, but I
guess you were having one of those "not quite awake" days that we all get sometimes.
Well, better luck next time. -- Nightingale
Eyes in Flower -- Darn. Thought I might learn a thing or two from you, but it was
all a blur and then I woke up in the infirmary. -- Jammies
Napper Leon -- What was it like, growing up Orcish in the Empire? I know there's a
lot of prejudice. Is that why you became a gladiator, to get away from there? --
Nightfall
Sundown -- Sorry about the bathtub thing, but the truth is you're better at dodging
than hitting. -- Bat
Khora the Small -- "Is it that you know you're immortal"? Come on! It's that I'm
not a very good gladiator. You know, my teammates and I originally joined the arena
system as a novel form of suicide. Some of us just weren't bad enough. I have to
put up with a lot of pain in my work. But as a found-metal sculptor whose work is
completely unappreciated in this culture, I'm used to that. -- Cyladia
P.S. Love the hammer. If you have an old one that you can spare, I'd like to
incorporate it into my next work.

STOP THINKING TOGS!!!!! It's here. Well, almost here anyway. We're looking at
a start date of the first turn in Aradi (DM 60) following the Fall Mail-In. This
should give everyone sufficient time to study the new ultra-improved T#%S IV rules
and prep accordingly. So without further ado, here is your handy-dandy guide to
winning your very own Golden Scrod (and some other very cool prizes to be announced
officially before the start of the tourney that must not be named):
1. Each T#%S team consists of two managers. After the tourney starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your partners wisely. T#%S IV will
last for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so. The only
team I know of so far is last TOGS winners: Ganolus Oakleaf/Hombre of Blood
Related/Thieves Guild. Hey, this is fun!
2. The T#%S entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per T#%S
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no
exceptions being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or
manager decides to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:
Andy Salveson
6812 Romanzo Way
Elk Grove, CA 95758
b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards and
no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. T#%S point system:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another T#%S warrior.
7 points for winning on another T#%S warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random matchup against another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another T#%S warrior.
4 points for winning a random matchup against a non-T#%S warrior. Do not fight
your team mate, you will not get any points. Also, you will not get any points
if you challenge or get challenged by a non-T#%S team, so use your avoids
wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
10 points for being the Duelmaster. This is in addition to all points listed
above and will begin turn 1, so prep accordingly.
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member, 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the
newsletter (that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and I will be
completely firm on this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will
not be given points if they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not
Duelmasters or fantasy related. I will be the sole judge of this. If you're
unsure if I will judge something to be Duelmasters or fantasy related, then
e-mail me before you write the spotlight and ask me. I reserve the right to
take points away from a spotlight after they are given if I judge at a later
time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.
-5 points for being the team that avoided the most.
If you participated in TOGS III, you'll notice some slight changes in the points
structure. The main things are points for random match ups against non T#%S
warriors, bonus points for being the Duelmaster, new spotlight criteria, and no
points given for being the most avoided team.
4. I already mentioned this, but T#%S IV will start the first turn in arena 60 after
the Fall Mail-In runs and it will last for 13 turns. There will not be a
Survivor format this time around, meaning no eliminations. I will still be doing
the multipliers at the end, however. This means that all points accumulated by a
team on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by
each team on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Prizes are yet to be determined, but I'll tell you what I know. There will be
prizes given out each turn to whichever team scores the most combined points on a
given turn. Tie breakers will go to the team with the most wins on that turn and
then to the team with most overall points. I have asked RSI for the same prizes
as last TOGS which were transferring any warrior to arena 60 and renaming Aradi
for approximately 6 months, but we'll see what they come back with. I haven't
decided how to split the prizes up, partly because I don't know how many teams
will be entering yet, but I do know the prizes will be split among the top 3
teams at the end. I will announce the exact breakdown of everything when I know
more.
6. And just like TOGS III, Death Stud and I will be the sole arbiters of any dispute
that may arise. Whine all you like, but as Nuln told you last time, that's how
it is.
7. M & RR Clause (go ahead, read between the capitals): I reserve the right to
disallow entry to this tourney if you have a previous history of being a big fat
mouth about everything.
I think that pretty much covers it. I will be accepting team entries as of now
and then posting them in the newsletters as I receive entry fees. Please feel free
to e-mail me regarding any questions or comments at Ganolus@aol.com. So everyone don
your best pair of leg warmers, hop on your favorite farm animal, and ride to Aradi
for the 4th kinda-annual Tournament that must not be named for no apparent reason
whatsoever, or T#%S IV, for short. See ya'll there!

To All Managers -- I would like to take this time to announce that my alliance, The
Association, is no more. Due to the dead weight managers of the alliance and their
lack of participation, DarkSpirit and I have formed a new alliance: The Firm. We
have taken on two members so far and are looking for a few more. If you would like
to find out more about The Firm, you can diplo Dark Spirit, Unknowns XX in arena 15
or myself, Sungod, Sadists F2FII in arena 62.
