Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Despite concern that Lirin Kiv would have another Duelmaster who failed to write a
column, TigToad would not have allowed my becoming Champion of the Horn go unnoticed.
I am the first of his warriors to rise to this position and I expect I'll be moving
on to Gateway after the October mail in. In the mean time, I am honored to serve as
the Champion. I am not ashamed to admit to concern as to what one of Phetmolge's
powerful blows could do to me. Fortunately, I proved to be faster than he and I did
not allow him the chance to land one of those shots. I find my ascent all the more
amazing considering the amount of fight experience my competition has. Even when you
factor in my tourney experience, I come no where close to equal to my competition. I
wish them the best of luck, but I expect to hold the horn. -- Stile
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Larkin is out of town--on business, he SAYS. I know what type of business he's
likely to have and I'm not sure I approve. At any rate, he's definitely unavailable,
whether it's because of legitimate business or corrupting morals, so you're stuck
with me and Zontani. Due to time and a hundred-odd boxes needing to be unpacked this
weekend, it's more of Zontani than of me.
So, here we go! "Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to
bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly LIRIN KIV games." I thought
bustles went out with polyester double-knits, or even before. I guess that shows
what I know about fashion. "SMOLDER DARKSUN caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested WINSTON and was awarded 36 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, SMOLDER DARKSUN put down
WINSTON, causing him to lose 19 points of recognition in the process." I believe
Smolder actually caught our eyes when he went from smoldering to open flames. "Most
watched of the fights this week, the spotlight was on NIGHTFALL as she bore arms
against the TV challenge of reigning Duelmaster STILE. Although NIGHTFALL made a
valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious STILE." And so
Stile's prediction has come true. "Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6
die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!" Yeah,
yeah, yeah, if you keep predicting this sort of thing, eventually it'll happen
somewhere and you can boast about your accuracy. I know how these things work and I
don't approve.
"But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city LIRIN KIV." There seems to be a "the" missing here...and since when has
anyone used "crossed blades" as building material? "I saw one fighter that warriors
avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. DARKLINGS is feared." Zontani
needs grammar lessons. "This much I can say. If you didn't look down dark alleys
you'd have been hard pressed to find any of DARK TOADS last week." Ah, this is why
the Toads are Dark, eh? "Busy avoiding DARKLINGS?" No, just busy being dark.
"Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that
many fighters are after NIGHTFALL. Watch your back!" Actually, this was a simple
misunderstanding. Most of the warriors can't wait for nightfall when anonymous
drinking becomes that much easier. "I cannot but express pride for the fearlessness
of SHYLOCK who cast caution to the winds and challenged DEANJLI TYL RHU, a fighter 40
points higher. In the end SHYLOCK was overcame by DEANJLI TYL RHU, a "sharp"
reminder that higher recognition is an indication of greater skill. Still, it was a
worthy bout!" Would that the recognition/skill thing were actually true, eh? "A
match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that BRAND posted a
TV challenge against the more highly recognized DEBATOR. The results, you ask?
Well, the firebrand BRAND lost to DEBATOR. Remember warriors, this is the discipline
of steel." I'm not sure why this raised anyone's eyebrows. The way Zontani goes
one, you'd think it silly to challenge up and, of course, all those bad things I
don't wish to mention to challenge down.
"What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality?" I have yet to see any good explanation of how to hone a year.
Anyone? "Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is
only the brightness of steel." Dark alleys also hide Toads and dumpsters (no
relation). "Keep vigil always!" Now there's a piece of good, sensible advice!
"If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in LIRIN KIV. Nice atmosphere you have here!" And next time someone'll get
you, with any luck. "Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me.
I must away!" As I thought, Zontani's delusional. "Till next we meet remember--the
pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!" And darned
difficult to write with! -- "Zontani Sharp Eyes" with the Saint in the peanut gallery

Citizens of Ghea (only the ignorant fail to note Lirith Kai is not in Alastari),
no new day is rising, but the sun is setting on just another beautiful evening.
While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City.
Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all
gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they
had masks, who cares.
Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in
Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by
those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the
same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many
years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by
pests.
Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own
little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except
to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you
choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs.
Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed.
Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents
will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target
those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home.
So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous
Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and
bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.
