Not Talahya:
The Ghean gladiators once again positioned themselves for combat, spreading out
enough that each warrior should have room to act independently. The lizard man,
Thristle, took the leading position on the path, with the others fanned out to the
sides where the ground was flat and clear enough.
The mist roiled and disgorged the Ardaunar.
There were half a dozen of them, in scale-mail and helms, armed with short,
straight swords. Like Thristle, they were humanoid but not human. Unlike Thristle,
they were not reptilian.
"Narsh Uttur?" Carris Fallstar asked, remembering a few of the werewolves of
Lyratilan that he'd met on the Isle.
"They certainly smell like wolves," Rogan answered with a grimace.
"The teeth that bite," Scarlatti agreed, eyeing the fanged snouts uneasily.
"The claws that rend. I shudder to think of fighting them," he added, shuddering
conspicuously. His sword was steady in his hand.
Moonjumper, beside him, laughed.
At that sound, the Ardaunar reared back, exchanging uneasy glances. They weren't
used to being laughed at. The hesitation was brief, however. The one in the center
of the pack stepped forward and began a long... well, it was probably a harangue. In
the growly voice of the creature, it was hard to tell if it was boastful, hostile, or
emotionally neutral.
Thristle broke in on the speech with one of his own, all whistles and chirps and
hissing sounds.
The leading Ardaunar made a 'cut it off' gesture and spoke, with difficulty, in the
local version of Isle cant. "Thizz ourr path. You getd off, grrovel, and we notd
kill."
"No," Carris said, stepping up beside Thristle. "Grovel for a pack of mangy
curs? We will not."
The leading Ardaunar howled fury and lunged forward, his companions close behind.
Contrary to the gladiators' expectations, they did not each engage one enemy but
concentrated at one end of the line, where Moonjumper and Scarlatti held down the
right. It was quickly obvious that the Ardaunar were used to fighting as a unit,
rather than one-on-one. They stayed together, covered each other's flanks, moved
forward and back so that each got a chance to rest when the battle was hotest.
The gladiators changed their own half-formed plan and moved to encircle the
compact group of opponents. Each gladiator picked one of the dog-men and tried to
entice him out to where he could be fought in the way they were used to. A futile
effort, as the Ardaunar wouldn't break their pack; it was their strength, and they
knew it.
"This isn't working," Carris said, disgusted. He spoke Fratsfan rather than
Isle cant and hoped that the two Free Blades warriors would understand it well
enough--and the dogs not at all. "Thristle was right, we've got to fight as a team.
And we've got to break them up. So, Rogan, Scarlatti, work with me, we'll split this
pack in two. Moonjumper, you and Thristle keep them distracted so they won't guess
what we're up to until it's too late."
"What about me?" Fizban asked.
"You're no warrior," the elf said bluntly. "Do you have any spells that can
help here?"
"At such close quarters with risk to my own side, and without preparation...."
The old wizard shrugged, looking embarrassed.
"That's what I thought. Stay out of the way, then." Carris disengaged from the
Ardaunar he was fencing with. "We act... NOW." He lunged.
Rogan and Scarlatti fell in on either side of him and a little behind, making a
wedge to split the pack. The Ardaunar howled, and one went down from Carris's
initial lunge-and-thrust. No way, no time to tell if the blow was fatal, but the dog
was out of the fight. The others howled and drew back a little, trying to reform
their tight group. The wedge of gladiators forced itself deeper, and there was
another howl as Moonjumper and Thristle attacked on the flank. Two of the Ardaunar
grabbed their fallen comrade, and they all began to back away.
"This is the most dangerous moment," Thristle warned. "They will retreat if we
allow them to do so, but if the attack is pressed, they will fight, and more fiercely
for being desperate."
"We don't need to drive home this victory," Fizban urged behind them. "We don't
need bitter enemies here in this strange place!"
"I'd like to see a clear surrender," Carris Fallstar growled.
"Ah, let 'em go," Scarlatti muttered. "We whipped 'em, and they know it. We've
got other things to do."
"A place to rest," Fizban agreed with a small groan. Age got no easier to bear
with experience.
"Food," added Scarlatti.
"And most of all, information," Carris Fallstar finished.
"I will take you to the compound of my team," Thristle said. "You will be able
to rest and refresh yourselves, and our managers will doubtless bend their minds to
solving your problems. This routing of the Ardaunar," he gestured at the patch of
blood on the walkway, "is perhaps a small thing, but it will amuse my comrades and
dispose them to be helpful. Come."
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Well, another turn comes and I remain your champion. I must admit, taking this
throne proved to be a lot harder than holding it. Maybe I shall give Phetmolge
another shot at it...or perhaps not, that man frightens me a bit. Deanjli Tyl Rhu I
know is a strong competitor and is capable of besting me if she can keep her feet.
This turn I offer my challenge to a fourth different competitor in as many turns. We
shall see if I remain top dog after my rash challenge. -- Stile
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
I think we have more personals per fight fought than any arena on the Isle. We
should celebrate this--NOT by having no personals next time, either! After all, it's
good to be best at something.
It's been one of those lazy weekends here--sun with just enough cloud to make it
interesting, a pot-luck picnic that was very good, and no rush to get back to the
office. Nothing big happened, so I guess I'll talk about the fights.
Of which we had a mere twenty-two, with five of the warriors being standbys.
Sheesh. Nine fights were challenge matches, three of them involved TV challenges.
And the most challenges, by the way, went to Damoreth Stenn. I guess he won't be
going fishing any time soon. Most avoided was Root of All Evil, by Split Infinity.
TIRYA (46-3594) (18-27-0,42) of SAND DANCERS fought MICKEY HATCHER (74-3356)
(17-4-0,55) of 1988 DODGERS. TIRYA was handily defeated by MICKEY HATCHER in a 1
minute one-sided contest. She just keeps losing. How long will she stay active, I
wonder? True, Sand Dancers are masochists, but still, there must be some limit.
VALLANT (38-4151) (28-8-2,80) of BLENDING ENTHRONED fought UNEMPLOYED PERSON
(107-5) (0-0-0,70) of Draftees. VALLANT vanquished UNEMPLOYED PERSON in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided match. You do realize, don't you, Vallant, that you have
made it that much harder for the Unemployed Person to find work? I mean, he's all
beaten up. Bleeding, even. Who'd hire him?
ISHAMAEL (74-1685) (27-39-1,115) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL fought FLOYD (107-10) (0-0-
0,150) of Draftees. ISHAMAEL was bested by FLOYD in a popular 1 minute bout. I
gotta tell you, Ish--may I call you Ish?--that somebody in the Commission office must
hate you. There are standbys closer to your rank which would have given you a fairer
fight. A little largesse in the relevant locations might improve things for you.
TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106) (57-55-2,180) of SANGUINE SAINTS fought THE
QUICKLING (70-1669) (43-100-2,159) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TRAM SATANS BLOOD overpowered
THE QUICKLING in a 2 minute bloody mismatched fight. I got it figured out that what
the Quickling is quick at is losing, yes? And also, it would be interesting to see a
match between Tram and Rogan of Home Guard, both of 'em being blind and all.
DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (73-56-0,194) of SAND DANCERS fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL
(78-196) (45-58-0,184) of THE DRAGON FIST. DEANJLI TYL RHU demolished CORT
NIGHTJEWEL in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Which surprised nobody.
RUSTLING BREEZE (33-6478) (28-23-1,190) of THE WASTING FIELD fought ZALMARDARIN
(78-312) (37-69-2,175) of THE DRAGON FIST. RUSTLING BREEZE was butchered by
ZALMARDARIN in an exciting 1 minute one-sided brawl. Ooooh, death! BAD boy,
Zalmardarin! Bad!
CYLADIA (51-1122) (84-96-0,210) of SKAITHVARN fought ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232)
(24-25-1,174) of SPLIT INFINITY. CYLADIA vanquished ROBERTO LEATHAM in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided fray. I don't know why the crowd was pleased, unless
they all bet on Cyladia. It was too short for much "appreciation of techniique" and
so on.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (53-47-1,189) of DARKLINGS fought IMPRISONED SPY (107-9) (0-0-
0,170) of Draftees. JAMMIES was overpowered by IMPRISONED SPY in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided duel. Really bad luck, boy. There's an author breathing over my
shoulder and commenting on the, ahem, influences that such a loss might have on the
story you're in.
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (77-87-2,199) of DARKLINGS fought GOJIRO (107-31) (0-0-
0,220) of Draftees. NIGHTFALL (Moonrise) devastated GOJIRO in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched bout. Just in passing I might note that NONE of the Sand Dancers
fought standbys this time! Incredible, no? Yes? But five other people did, as
noted above, and that is too many standbys for the number of fights we've got here.
So let's have more fights next time, okay?
NIGHTINGALE (74-2423) (79-85-2,223) of DARKLINGS fought TALON WARSMITH (99-101)
(51-79-7,189) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTINGALE was handily defeated by TALON WARSMITH
in a 1 minute one-sided contest. Guess he didn't like your singing. But Dwarves are
notorious for their tin ears. If it isn't a march, they don't know what to do with
it.
BAT (74-2742) (61-67-1,227) of DARKLINGS fought VILLAINOUS INFORMER (107-23) (0-
0-0,181) of Draftees. BAT demolished VILLAINOUS INFORMER in a 1 minute mismatched
match. Good work, Bat. The fellow was even more villainous than the title hints at.
A real rabid snide. He probably spends his time hanging out in deep con caves.
INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611) (37-43-4,215) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL fought NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (53-74-0,205) of DARKLINGS. INIGO MONTOYA handily defeated NIGHTCAP in a 2
minute one-sided bout. Listen, Nightcap, you've got to let some of the Root guys
win, or they'll quit.
PHETMOLGE (37-1555) (134-136-1,221) of UP TO NO GOOD fought KHORA THE SMALL (78-
519) (96-130-3,198) of SAND DANCERS. PHETMOLGE was viciously subdued by KHORA THE
SMALL in a popular 1 minute brutal fight. A long-sought outcome, at least by Khora.
It has not, however, gotten her the coveted top basher's slot. That is still held by
Zalmardarin the vicious but silent.
And the challenge matches, such of them as there were.
MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP (1-6882) (18-13-0,50) of LADY OF THE GLEN challenged
DARLINA (74-2995) (21-14-2,62) of SAND DANCERS. Up 12. MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP won
victory over DARLINA in a popular 3 minute Challenge duel. Three minutes, eh?
Must've been a tough contest. Too bad I slept through it....
IAN (75-2747) (25-10-0,92) of DARK TOADS challenged KYRLANIA (70-2327) (55-76-
1,120) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 28. IAN unbelievably bested KYRLANIA in a 2 minute
Challenge duel. Hey, I believe it! Nothing like managerial attention, after all.
TREMERE (9-4915) (26-0-0,123) of DARK TOADS challenged TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-
2777) (54-46-4,161) of SAND DANCERS. Up 38. TREMERE handily defeated TORYN TYL
DAGEDA in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Is there nobody here who can beat this
Toad? Not that I wish him ill, but... 26-0?
WINSTON (75-2600) (37-15-0,172) of DARK TOADS challenged DEADBOLT (70-1664) (67-
83-2,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 21. WINSTON luckily beat DEADBOLT in an exciting 3
minute bloody Challenge struggle. Sneaky trick, Winston, to first blind him or
dazzle him or something with the beams from the radiant jewel in your forehead.
Strong action, but then, this situation called for strong action.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (32-29-1,177) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged ALYAHOODI (11-
2219) (48-65-1,189) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. Up 12. SEMIRHAGE was bested by ALYAHOODI in
an action packed 3 minute Challenge brawl. Ouch.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (30-20-1,195) of DARK TOADS challenged SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-
513) (55-52-1,226) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 31. SHYLOCK was defeated by SMOLDER
DARKSUN in an exciting 1 minute Challenge fight. Not a good sign, no, but then,
occasionally even the best of warriors--except Tremere--must lose.
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (17-3-2,58) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE TV challenged DAMORETH STENN
(65-6105) (29-26-0,78) of SAND DANCERS. Up 20. TOM RIDDLE vanquished DAMORETH STENN
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. This is Damoreth the Most Challenged.
Looks like he's not much good at answering riddles.
BRAND (82-13289) (12-8-1,171) of TOADS OF AMBER III TV challenged TAIRIKIA (51-
4247) (57-66-0,171) of SAND DANCERS. Straight across. BRAND handily defeated
TAIRIKIA in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Did you know if rub an amber toad
with silk, or maybe it's wool, there will be sparks?
And for the Horn, STILE (65-5941) (36-21-1,269) of SPLIT INFINITY 2 TV
challenged DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862) (70-59-2,220) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. For the
Horn, down 49. STILE devastated DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a 1 minute mismatched
Challenge Title fight. Can't fault the Champion for issuing this challenge, as the
title match would otherwise have been a random, I bet. And besides, if you've got a
TV challenge, I say use it! Good work, Stile.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Wow...a veritable flood of personal ads last turn. Awesome. -- TigToad
Finest kind.
Nightfall -- Thanks for the congratulations, though it is not quite as impressive as
it seems. I believe the word is 'toasty'. I'll see them again in Gateway, but for
now at least I've learned what I can. -- Stile
Deanjli Tyl Rhu -- I'm all for your winning record and glory blaze. I'm baffled by
what I'm doing up so high in the rankings as it is. -- Shylock
Deanjli Tyl Rhu -- Shylock speaks for himself. If your blaze of glory comes near my
horn, I plan to continue to give you losses. -- Stile
Spoken like a true Champion.
Sargen Denjo -- Thank you, sir. I'm amazing myself at this point. -- Tremere
Kyrlania -- Outstanding fight, sir! I thought for sure that challenge would be the
end of my record. Well fought and a fun read! -- Tremere
Smolder Darksun -- I must admit, I imagined a nice, slow 200 minute fight when I made
that challenge. Did you forget what style you are, sir? -- Winston
Inigo Montoya -- Well, we impressed Lady Greywand. That's something, I guess. --
Jammies
Bleys -- That was a pretty profitable broken leg, wasn't it? Worked out all right
for me too. -- Phetmolge
The Vermicious Knid got four skills and two ratings. It isn't fair! *I* won, after
all. -- Bat
Talon Warsmith -- How come you've got so many kills? It's not like your weapon is
that dangerous. -- Nightingale
I think we've been into this before. He's a Bloodgames Victor.
Tairikia -- Don't forget to tell your manager to change your train. That was some
good sword-work even though I won. -- Nightfall
Cort Nightjewel -- Thanks for a win. I'm wondering if I might be able to get a
winning record before I retire. How about yourself? You only need thirteen more
wins. -- Cyladia
And attention from his manager.
Zalmardarin -- Remind your manager to change your train. Maybe you should work on
speed next. -- Nightcap
Stile -- A good match. You are obviously well fit to hold the Horn. -- Deanjli tyl
Rhu
Ishamael -- It takes a while to get back into the groove of being a gladiator,
doesn't it? But those skills should help. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Marian of Ravenskeep -- I know this great place north of Dal Shang--it's where I've
got my Lord Protector lands, in fact. There's this modest manor house on a bluff
above the beach, and it'd be a great place to keep ravens. The fishing's good, too.
Could I, um, interest you in this? -- Damoreth Stenn
Nightfall -- Yes, I know, I need to change my training. It SHOULD be attended to by
now, and I hope to Shierah that it is. We'll see, hmm? -- Tairikia
P.S. Good fight, as fights go. Not something I'd want to write home about, but
then, nobody at home reads, so what difference does it make?
The Quickling -- About like fighting a standby. -- Khora the Small and disgusted
Ian -- A very forceful toad, I see. And isn't that a jewel in your forehead? --
Darlina
Vallant -- The way I felt after you smacked me on the head like that, a rubber duckie
would be more formidable. -- Tirya
P.S. Going home to disentangle trouble in Simtakka holds a STRONG appeal. You ever
been there? I could show you some sights, you could smack some bad guys on the head,
and a fine time could be had by all.
Jon Snow -- Come on down to Hamadrina (that's my home port, it's on the Ratani
Coast), and I'll show you some deep sea fishing. -- Zhal
P.S. Or pirate hunting, or just beachcombing around the Isles of the South, or
whatever makes your socks roll up and down.
Zhal -- Butt out! He's coming to visit ME in Lin Tirian! -- Xara
P.S. I'll take him to meet my kin, and we can do some REAL hunting, after wild boars
and stuff, not wimpy FISH.

An Announcement Concerning the Brotherhood of the Blade Alliance:
I have chosen to withdraw my membership from the Brotherhood of the Blade
alliance. The years I have spent in the alliance have been the best of my DM career.
I leave the alliance with many great friends and will always remain close to my
former brethren.
The Brotherhood of the Blade will not skip a beat without my membership. It
remains in very capable hands and its roster is among the strongest in the game.
With the return on some of its founding members to DM, I know the BOB will continue
to grow in strength and prestige in the years to come. -- The Sandman
