Not Lirin Kiv:
Shylock wasn't at all sure he approved of, much less liked, Master Dan Shao, the
approximate arenamaster of this place. This place that was not Lirin Kiv, or the
Isle of the Eye, or anywhere else familiar. Dan Shao was altogether too ready to be
familiar...with Clemenda. And she wasn't pulling away in horror. Best if she
remembered that she was HIS date and companion at present. If necessary, he would
remind her. In unmistakable terms.
But at least Dan Shao had been willing to provide them with quarters here in
this arena complex, once Shylock had stated that they needed a chance to rest and
recover from the shock of the unexpected inter-dimensional transition. He did,
indeed, need a quiet place where he could relax, but not from shock. He needed time
to plan.
Shylock had long been looking for a place to make his own. Jade Mountain had
not been that place--definitely not. The Lucan family was much too powerfully
entrenched. And even if he had managed to become the highest power in the valley,
there was still the rest of Lirith Kai, the Emperor, and the Sun Legion. No, not
Lirith Kai. But Jade Mountain had served its purpose; it was there that he had
earned the Greywand's agelessness. A tricky spell, agelessness, extremely complex
and requiring not only great power but peculiar and rare ingredients. He was well
pleased to have let the Greywand incur that burden for him. But his investigations
seemed to indicate that once agelessness had been bestowed, it was a stable
condition, which meant that he didn't NEED the Greywand any more.
And Sheila Greywand had stood squarely between him and his goal of power. So
long as she lived, the Isle of the Eye was not the place he was looking for. And
killing her might be...difficult. Very difficult. A person didn't live to be five
thousand years old, or whatever she was, without learning how to defend herself.
But here.... Shylock leaned back on the couch which seemed to be what these
people used for relaxing (the chair by the small table was simple, hard, and not the
place to loll) and smiled a little. This place seemed to be quite different. He
would need to do a detailed examination, of course, but just from the first scans
he'd made: The Arcanum here was stable. A little lower in energy levels than that
of Ghea in the good times, but sufficient for his needs. There was no one--NO ONE--
within his zone of sensitivity who was making any use of magic at all! He had been
able to feel the Greywand's presence for miles, even when she was apparently not
doing anything magical. There was the sort of undifferentiated background shimmer
which he associated with groups of Adantri using their arts of hiu, probably
gladiators, or champions as they were called here, engaged in intensive practice. It
had that texture to it.
But the single, glorious fact was that this place appeared to have no
competition for him. He could establish himself here, begin the subtle influencing
and control of people and events which he sought, and NO ONE WOULD KNOW. He could be
the uncrowned king here, the emperor, he could be like a GOD here....
But there were things he needed to do first. He needed to make sure, absolutely
sure, that this world did not hold practitioners of magic who would be able to
challenge him. And then he needed to find and close the Gate through which he and
Clemenda had arrived, to make sure that no competitors from Ghea followed.
He leaped to his feet, eager to make a beginning.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Clemenda was not in the room assigned to her when Shylock checked it. She was
walking in a garden with Arenamaster Dan Shao, and enjoying it. If she felt a little
guilty at not waiting until Shylock was rested and ready to accompany her, well, she
had that guilt under control. After all, it had only been a dinner date. It wasn't
like they were seriously involved. And she could always say that she was finding out
more about this world, which had the advantage of being true.
As nearly as she could figure out, this world had a Lirith Kai in it that wasn't
too different from the Lirith Kai of Ghea. But there was no Alastari. And while
this place, this Liran Kiv, was on an island, it had the whole island to itself. If
there was anything like the rest of the Isle of the Eye, any Darkholm, Andorak, Free
Blades, any Talahya, Home Guard, or Primus, it was somewhere else.
She found it hard to imagine a world without Alastari. She hadn't thought she'd
ever feel homesick for the crowding, jostling nations, the patches of old magic gone
bad from the days of the Chaos Wars, the confusion of races and languages made
possible by Alastari's numerous Gates. It must be...very peaceful here. Very...
boring?
Dan Shao came to a stop in front of a monument of polished dark stone and paused
silently. It was inscribed with rows of something, names, she guessed, in the
Adantri monumental script.
Clemenda hadn't learned more than the minimum of the Adantri chancery cursive
script required for citizenship, and this angular, antique variation was beyond her
ability. She glanced at Dan Shao questioningly.
"It is a monument to those of our number who have fallen in our on-going war
with the Gray Witch of the East," he said. "We have held the line so far, but unless
the people of the Middle Sea come in on our side..." he shrugged. "There may be many
more names to add to this pillar before the matter has been settled."
"An on-going war...."
"It is the great burden on all the people of Aleth, though some refuse to
acknowledge it, or even welcome the Witch in her rule. But we of Lirith Kai will
never yield to her, and it is for this that our Champions here are trained and
selected and trained further, sent to war, and..." he sighed, "many ultimately
perish."
"Why is this Gray Witch an enemy?" Clemenda asked curiously.
"Setting aside the matter of iniquitous taxation, her imposition of worship in
manners and of deities unworthy of our blood, and the horrible draft of young people
from the lands she controls to feed her machinery of power, she risks the very
integrity of our world, the stability of the cosmos, by her unbridled use of Gates
into other dimensions."
"Gates such as the one Shylock and I came through."
"Ultimately, yes, that is a case in point. I have consulted the scholars, and
they feel that the Gate which brought you here, fair lady, was not opened
deliberately. But that it opened at all is a sign of the degree to which her
tampering with the fabric of reality has weakened the wall between universes. That
is why it is imperative that your Gate be closed--because it does weaken that fabric
and thus it imperils all existence, possibly that of your world as well as ours."

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Greeting, folks. It is no surprise to see me continue to defend the horn. I am
looking at my paltry selection of adversaries, and I see that there is one I have
never fought. That being said, I chose to not give Talon Warsmith a shot at my
throne, his style bothers me just a bit. Since Deanjli said she was not going to
Primus, she will have a lot of opportunities to take the throne in the next six
months, so I instead am looking at Darkmoon to offer my TV challenge to. The last
fight was fast paced and interesting, maybe this one will be as well. I salute Inigo
Montoya on a good fight, and wish the best of luck to everyone in the mail in.
Unfortunately, TigToad will only be sending Brand and Jon Snow from this arena this
time, as Bleys and I ran into timing mishaps. Pity. Hopefully, one will TV to make
up for the TVs that expire on Brand and Jon from the last mailer and I am taking my
TV challenge with me to the Gate, otherwise, this arena could again be out of
tournament victors. I wish the best to all of you, we need to show the rest of the
world what we are made of in Lirith Kai. At least, I hope we are made up of more
than we have shown of late. -- Stile
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Er... I wasn't taking a nap or anything! Just resting my eyes. That's all,
just resting 'em. I was paying attention. Didn't miss a thing.
Another day, well, half-day, of fights here in Lirin Kiv. Again only twenty,
but with only one standby, that's not too bad. Okay, it's awful. Might as well face
it. So, here's the unvarnished news, such as it is.
Darklings were avoided by Dark Toads. They why of it is a dark secret, right?
The Quickling was most challenged, Mantor knows why. We had twenty fights, with
eight challenges all together, two of them TV challenges. One standby fought, nobody
died. The longest fight was fourteen minutes, which amazes me. What did they find
to talk about out there for fourteen minutes? Or maybe the warriors involved were
resting THEIR eyes.
So... TIRYA (46-3594) (18-29-0,39) of SAND DANCERS fought MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP
(1-6882) (19-14-0,68) of LADY OF THE GLEN. TIRYA was bested by MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP
in a 2 minute bout. And here I thought the two of them were friends! Or maybe it
was some other two. Once you get 'em armor, it can be hard to tell people apart.
Well, if they've painted brightly colored crests on their armor, that helps, but if
they haven't... it could be street sweepers for all we can tell from the stands.
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (17-6-2,59) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought DAMORETH STENN
(65-6105) (29-28-0,61) of SAND DANCERS. VINCENT CRABBE was handily defeated by
DAMORETH STENN in a 1 minute uneven duel. Well, maybe Damoreth will let YOU go
fishing with him, or whatever it is that he's got in mind. I hear the neighbors have
been complaining about monsters in his basement, up there north of Dal Shang.
Probably just dropped in to check out his beer, Damoreth being noted for his cellar
that way. A con-noser of beer, he is.
VALLANT (38-4151) (30-8-2,96) of BLENDING ENTHRONED fought DARLINA (74-2995)
(22-15-2,60) of SAND DANCERS. VALLANT overpowered DARLINA in a popular 1 minute one-
sided duel. Will Darlina cuss him out? Will she claim his V gave him an unfair
advantage? Tune in next cycle and see (or read)!
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (55-47-4,150) of SAND DANCERS fought CHEATING MANAGER
(107-6) (0-0-0,130) of Desperate Fans. TORYN TYL DAGEDA viciously subdued CHEATING
MANAGER in a 2 minute gory contest. And here we all had the image of her as such a
GENTLE woman. "Viciously subdued." Sad. But that's what too much time in the arena
will do to some people. Coarsens their fibers. Look at Khora, after all--she
started out, well, maybe not GENTLE, but she was smooth and courteous. Now her
fibers are about like unraveled rope.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (53-49-1,152) of DARKLINGS fought KYRLANIA (70-2327) (55-78-
1,103) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. JAMMIES was beaten by KYRLANIA in a popular 1 minute
bloody match. Jammies, my boy, you're building trouble for yourself and your
comrades-in-adventure with this losing. Werre's DEPENDING on you to hang onto a
winning record so that the Adantri members of that adventuring group don't get
creamed.
BRAND (82-13289) (14-8-1,194) of TOADS OF AMBER III fought RUSTLING BREEZE (33-
6478) (28-25-1,175) of THE WASTING FIELD. BRAND was devastated by RUSTLING BREEZE in
an exciting 1 minute brutal one-sided fight. There was electric excitement in the
stands as the Breeze rubbed across all that amber. Sparks were flying. Hair was
rising to its feet, or roots, perhaps. Managers' eyes turned red and started to
glow. Etc.
ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232) (25-26-1,188) of SPLIT INFINITY fought CYLADIA (51-
1122) (85-97-0,195) of SKAITHVARN. ROBERTO LEATHAM overcame CYLADIA in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute bloody bout. The scary thing about this fight was that Cyladia
didn't even seem to realize she was bleeding till the ned. That's a lady who needs
help. There must be somebody here on the Isle who can warm up her hands.
BAT (74-2742) (62-68-1,190) of DARKLINGS fought KHORA THE SMALL (78-519) (98-
130-3,207) of SAND DANCERS. BAT vanquished KHORA THE SMALL in an action packed 1
minute mismatched bout. Greatly to Khora's disgust, as this cost her, once again,
the top basher's spot. If I were you, Bat, I'd keep out of her way for a while.
NIGHTINGALE (74-2423) (80-86-2,205) of DARKLINGS fought TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-
1106) (58-56-2,182) of SANGUINE SAINTS. NIGHTINGALE overpowered TRAM SATANS BLOOD in
a popular 1 minute mismatched conflict. She sings a very clear song, doesn't she,
Tram?
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (79-87-2,217) of DARKLINGS fought ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (38-
70-3,190) of THE DRAGON FIST. NIGHTFALL handily defeated ZALMARDARIN in an exciting
2 minute one-sided contest. And night falls, as they say, over a scene too
embarrassing for mortal eyes. Fortunately, there are not a lot of mortal eyes here
on the Isle. Some, yes, but not a lot.
TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (53-79-7,217) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (54-75-0,204) of DARKLINGS. TALON WARSMITH overpowered NIGHTCAP in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute one-sided match. And Nightcap is lucky to be still among the
living. These Bloodgames victors sometimes forget that the rest of the world has
different rules.
DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (75-56-0,212) of SAND DANCERS fought SMOLDER DARKSUN
(78-513) (56-53-1,182) of THE DRAGON FIST. DEANJLI TYL RHU overpowered SMOLDER
DARKSUN in a 1 minute one-sided fight. A thing she did without any difficulty. If
she doesn't watch out, someone will come along and induct her unawares, I don't care
what the Split sheet said.
And the challenge matches--
IAN (75-2747) (26-11-0,111) of DARK TOADS challenged THE QUICKLING (70-1669)
(44-101-2,177) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 66. IAN was vanquished by THE QUICKLING in a
1 minute uneven Challenge fight. So tell us, Ian, IS he quick? We hear conflicting
reports.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (32-31-1,172) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged TAIRIKIA (51-
4247) (58-67-0,182) of SAND DANCERS. Up 10. SEMIRHAGE was handily defeated by
TAIRIKIA in a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. A bold challenge from Semirhage to
the more experienced and not always perfectly ladylike Tairikia. Well, she can't be
a perfect lady, coming from Tricoris and all. I hope she taught you well, Semirhage.
TREMERE (9-4915) (27-1-0,156) of DARK TOADS challenged CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196)
(45-60-0,166) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 10. TREMERE was overcome by CORT NIGHTJEWEL in
a 2 minute Challenge fight. How the mighty are fallen! Once the winning streak
broke, everyone looks at you and thinks, "Young punk!" Hang in there and get it
back, boy.
WINSTON (75-2600) (38-16-0,189) of DARK TOADS challenged ALYAHOODI (11-2219)
(50-65-1,209) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. Up 20. WINSTON luckily beat ALYAHOODI in an
exciting 14 minute bloody Challenge struggle. Our longest fight. As for "exciting,"
well... depends on what excites you, doesn't it? I, uh, rested my eyes during the
middle of this one.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (30-22-1,184) of DARK TOADS challenged DEADBOLT (70-1664) (67-
85-2,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 4. SHYLOCK overpowered DEADBOLT in a crowd
pleasing 4 minute mismatched Challenge match. Very respectable. Shylock is
obviously a man to watch.
INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611) (38-44-4,194) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged PHETMOLGE
(37-1555) (135-137-1,201) of UP TO NO GOOD. Up 7. INIGO MONTOYA viciously subdued
PHETMOLGE in a 1 minute Challenge brawl. And despite this loss, Phetmolge now holds,
once again, the much disputed Top Basher position. Good going, Phetmolge. Show them
how in Primus.
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (19-3-2,86) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE TV challenged MICKEY HATCHER
(74-3356) (19-4-0,66) of 1988 DODGERS. Down 20. TOM RIDDLE handily defeated MICKEY
HATCHER in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Looks like Mickey doesn't play word
games, eh?
STILE (65-5941) (38-21-1,299) of SPLIT INFINITY 2 TV challenged DARKMOON
BLACKFELL (75-862) (71-60-2,212) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 87 from the throne. STILE
devastated DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. Nobody
can say that Stile isn't spreading chances for the Horn around. Good work, both of
you, but, of course, best work to Stile.

Tairikia -- Okay, my bathtub or yours? -- Brand
And with or without the horse?
Toryn tyl Dageda -- I did not have enough momentum to ward off Tairikia though. --

Tairikia -- An excellent fight. I think I would have had you if I could have kept my

Darlina -- You don't like me around, that's it, isn't it? Here I thought we were
such good friends, and you tell me you were happier when I was gone. Sigh. -- Marian
of Ravenskeep...the friendless.
Deanjli -- You're staying around? That's not fair, I want to stay around, too....
Ah well. I'm off to Gateway. -- Stile
That's life for you.
Damoreth Stenn -- Sorry about the repeated challenges but I really do not have many
warriors to chose from when selecting my challenges. Hopefully I be up in the

Damoreth Stenn -- I do not believe any of my warriors have been up to anything in
Mordant. Would you care to enlighten me? -- Rillion (who takes over the management

I don't know about "up to," but it has been mentioned here and there that
someone who is apparently one of your warriors has been seen popping in and out
of a phone booth in Mordant and consorting with that Homicidal Maniac, Lady
Protector Sandy, aka the Evil Inputter. A young, mild-mannered reporter type
with glasses who favors turquoise undershirts. This sound familiar? If he's
NOT one of yours, better tell her quickly! She's headed for Andor right now
with the intention of beating up the Arenamistress there, seems to think Sylia
has something to do with the current non-appearance of the fellow where Sandy
expected to find him. And after that her attention might turn to you, as his
apparent manager, and you know how impulsive Sandy can get....
Tom Riddle -- It's okay, I was going fishing anyway. -- Damoreth Stenn, used to
losing (except against fish)
Tremere -- At last someone has found the key to defeating you! Break your weapon,
and then repeatedly strike you on the arm with my parry. Whatever works, eh? But
you had a good run. I salute you. -- Tairikia
Ian -- Nothing personal, but I was tired of losing fights, you see. My winning
record was imperiled. Can't have that. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Cyladia -- Seriously, you don't belong in this life. (Neither do I, but that's a
different story.) Why not retire? -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Rustling Breeze -- To remain top basher, I must win my fights. Therefore, you must
lose when matched against me. This should be obvious. -- Khora the Small but
Powerful and Determined
Mickey Hatcher -- One measly little skill. -- Tirya
The Alastarian Deserter? Pish and also tush. -- Darlina
Deanjli tyl Rhu -- You're a Sand Dancer? You're really good! -- Cyladia
Smolder Darksun -- Nice parry, and sorry about the bathtub thing. -- Nightingale
Deadbolt -- I don't know why you don't have a better record; you're pretty nimble. --
Nightfall
Tairikia -- Then the problem probably lies in your name. Too many "I"s. Your
manager can't spell it right and neither can the inputter. Change your name to Tarka
and see how quickly your strategy gets improved. -- Nightfall
Talon Warsmith -- And so I edge farther and farther away from a winning record... but
at least that train you helped me with might make a difference. Thanks. -- Bat
Zalmardarin -- Nice train! But you know, you should change styles. The one you're
using is a bit stereotypical for an orc. -- Nightcap
Semirhage -- (with a rueful smile) Thanks for the win. Now I'm just two wins away
from a 50/50 record. But I think this may be my last fight before Primus. Oh well.
I hope those ribs mended all right. -- Phetmolge
Bleys -- I've sent you a feather duster. -- Phetmolge
The Quickling -- Dang, you really are quick! -- Jammies

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE
Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:
DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
====================== ======================
0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
31+ FE: Challengers Primus
All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
