In the Far West:
Shania Silverstar leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes. Reaching
Herlas had been difficult and exhausting, but it was also a victory; she hadn't
really believed it was possible. Hard on Herlas, too, probably, but...she pressed
her lips together in a hard line. Herlas had asked for it. The Fratsfan magician
had set her up for capture by the people here in this city. Even more surprising
than reaching Herlas with her message had been that Herlas was still alive to be
reached. Rughal would have been furious when she vanished. Someone--Ashon Chang,
perhaps, or Werre--had kept the Fratsfan alive. Unless-- Could Rughal be dead? No.
She'd have sensed it if Rughal had died. At least, she was fairly sure she would
have felt it if the ranger had died.
A measure of strength returned, and she opened her eyes to stare at the opposite
wall and wonder what to do next. And whether a priest would show up and demand
something of her for the use of this shrine. She hadn't seen anyone here yet. No
priest, no cult figure, no offering bowl--she wouldn't have turned down a bite of the
god's bread--and no altar, no worshippers. Just a courtyard with a fountain in it,
and two plain stone rooms behind, the water for the fountain welling up in the rear-
most room and flowing through the other and out. The stair to the storm drains had
come up in the inner room, also. The god's name, Hodan, had come to her when she
attempted a Knowing, but there had been nothing with it, no images. Still, it was a
restful place, and she could use the rest. And she was fairly sure that it was
magically shielded against prying eyes.
On that thought, her own eyes closed. Just a little nap, that's what she
needed....
*** ***** *** ***** ***
The mage-wind had dropped when Herlas fainted, but the natural wind was enough
to keep their ship moving. Werre was doing something with the wheel, and he and
Ashon Chang were peering at a chart. Vurand and Rughal were kneeling beside the
prostrate Fratsfan. Jammies dithered a moment, then went back to see whether he
could do anything to help with the ship.
Ashon Chang glanced up as the young gladiator joined them. "We've entered a
strong current," the samurai said. "Without more wind than we have now, escaping it
will be difficult--"
Jammies peered at the chart they were studying curiously. It didn't bear enough
resemblance to an ordinary map for him to make sense of it. "Where's the current
taking us? Back to the rocks, or the Outer Ocean, or...?"
"To shore in this area." Werre indicated a section of coast. "Zinaco, and even
I, back in Lirith Kai, have heard of Zinaco. Not a place that welcomes visitors."
"But it's where we have to go," Vurand said, coming up behind Jammies. "Zinaco
Lal. Is that on your map?"
"Yes, but--"
"Shania got a message to us through Herlas saying she's AT this Zinaco Lal
place. So we have to go there and rescue her," the Orc said flatly. He was
obviously not prepared to hear any arguments on the subject.
No one offered arguments. Shania was their comrade, and one did not abandon a
comrade, if there was a way to rescue her.
Werre walked his fingers over the chart, measuring. "It'll take us a couple of
days to get there, even with the current and a good wind in our favor."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Shania wasn't sure how long she'd slept, hours, at least. The light in the
shrine's outer courtyard had changed from one wall to the opposite one, and it was
softer. Nearing the day's end, she guessed. She stood and stretched slowly, wincing
at the aches from sleeping sitting on a stone floor against a stone wall.
Now that she was fully awake, she could smell something hot and spicy, and her
stomach grumbled eagerly. If there was finally a worshipper here, with an offering,
did she dare go out to the outer room or the courtyard?
A man's shape--that was all she could see against the brightness--filled the
doorway. "'Bout time you woke up," he growled. "Who're you running from?"
Shania stiffened, her chin coming up aggressively. "Why do you assume I'm
running from something?"
"That's why people come here," he said. He sounded impatient. "To hide."
"Oh." She shrugged a little. "Some priests thought I would make a good
sacrifice. I disagreed with them."
He moved into the room, and she saw him clearly for the first time. A local
man, by his swarthy face and features. Poorly dressed, but he didn't move like a
poor man...he moved like a warrior, and a proud one. Her eyes narrowed. And he had
been speaking Isle cant. An advanced gladiator, almost certainly. "No point in
being sacrificed if it isn't an honor," he agreed. "But they have good taste." He
leered at her. "I'm partial to blondes myself."

Not Talahya:
This place that wasn't Talahya, this Hub, was the most confusing city the
gladiators had ever seen, as well as the largest. There were stone blockhouses with
grim monster masks on their facades, and huts of some kind of jointed wood or reed
with thatched roofs, and tall, narrow wooden houses with elaborate wooden lace
trimming and wild colors, houses of mud, and brick, and even glass, log cabins,
towers that might have been made out of seashell, and scaled domes, all jumbled
together. Most of the people who crowded the streets were human, though varying
wildly in their dress, but there were elves and dwarves and orcs, lizardmen like
Thristle, Ardaunar, a feline race that resembled the Pridefolk of Ghea, and others
too strange to categorize with a quick glance.
Thristle's "guildhouse" was not like any Scarlatti had seen before. It was
built in the form of a hollow square with a modestly-sized courtyard in the center
and three stories around it; the upper floors were set back so that each had a broad
deck in front of the rooms. Well, no, it was a little like the oldest houses in
Zuwayza. He had used to think that the Karnhorns had brought that building style
from Serevada, because it sure didn't fight the Zuwayzan climate. But Serevada
wasn't any warmer, so he didn't know where it came from, just that it wasn't
particularly practical. Now he wondered if it was practical anywhere, because it
caught the sunlight and concentrated it in this courtyard and to a lesser extent on
the terraces, and he was sweltering.
Of course, lizards liked being hot, within reason. Maybe these guys had brought
the style from THEIR home. And it did have one great advantage: it provided privacy.
No telling when a person might need privacy.
Thristle gave a trilling call that no human could have voiced, and his fellow
gladiators began to emerge from the curtained doorways around the courtyard and on
the terraces. All lizard folk, of course, and many of them noticeably larger than
Thristle. And armed. Rather intimidating, actually, because the first thing one of
them did was to shut the gate that led back to the street.
There was a brisk exchange of incomprehensible sounds. Finally Thristle turned
to the Ghean gladiators and said, "I have told them how you stood with me against the
Ardaunar, and how you came to be here by some magical fluke. They have agreed that
you are to stay with us for now, and that we will do what we can to put you in the
way of going home. But it is likely that in return you must join with us in the
arena. The final decision, though, will be made by our captains." He gestured
toward the widest doorway on the courtyard level. An elaborately decorated cloth
hung there, and on one had come out of it so far. "If you will come with me to speak
to captains Lirtr and Ristrisks and Zith, who all speak the language of the Hub as
well as I do, we can make the final negotiations."
"Final negations," Rogan muttered. "I don't know if I like the sound of
that...."
Carris Fallstar glanced at the blind Aruaki sharply, then around at the clusters
of lizard men.
"It need not have such a negative implication," Moonjumper murmured. She, too,
glanced around with as casual an air as she could manage.
"Thristle was friendly," Scarlatti protested, keeping his voice down too.
"In a human, that behavior would be friendly," Carris said quietly. "But
Thristle is not human. Who knows what his people might mean by such an appearance?
It could be how they bait traps." The elf gestured slightly toward the doorway,
where the lizard man was waiting for them. "We'd better go on in. It might be as
innocent as anything could be, and anyway, we're arousing who knows what suspicions
by lingering here." He walked firmly and confidently toward the curtained doorway.

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
It is no surprised to me that I am still your champion. I was able to be a part of
another great fight and see myself one turn closer to visiting the Gate. The
tournament changes coming to the system provide TigToad a lot of options and it will
create some differences in the warriors that are going to be fought under his stable.
Since I have no new adversaries to challenge me, I will go with the stylematch up and
give Nightingale a chance to dethrone me. It seems only fitting, Darklings are
occasionally active and maybe will even write a DM column if his warrior sees the
Horn. Salute. -- Stile
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Debby Tonte was going on vacation to someplace with sunshine, someplace warm
enough to lie around on a beach half-dressed and work on her tan. I'm staying here
and huddling over my fire. I hate that. It isn't fair!
The Split has come and gone, leaving displacement and gaps in the ranks in its
wake. We say goodbye to Stile, who has been summoned to a higher service. At least,
that's what they call it here. Sounds more like a press gang to me, but what do I
know?
We had a mere nineteen fights today, but no standbys fought. Six challenge
matches. Piffling. Possibly because of the distinct chill in the air (the one
that's making me scrawl almost illegibly here due to my fingers being stiff, THAT
chill), the longest fights only ran three minutes. Three minutes? You call this a
long fight? Not only do you not get a turtle for a three minute fight, you don't
even get a hard-shelled beetle. Heck, two LUNGERS could go three minutes, if they
were in good training.
Darklings were most avoided--by their manager. But that's not new. They were
also avoided by the Dark Toads. It would appear that two Darks don't make a light.
Or maybe they do and don't want to. Whatever. Damoreth Stenn got the most
challenges. That was what, two? One warrior died briefly, always a messy business
from a legal standpoint. Do you know we have a whole special category of lawyers
here on the Isle to deal only with the tricky question of short-term bequests among
Lord Protectors? You can will something to another Lord Protector for a limited
period, usually six months, and then they have to give it back! Amazing. And in
some cases, extremely low and devious in purpose and practice. Unless you go through
the Gate, then you give it away forever. But with the Gate closing, that will
doubtless change. Will we have all these seasoned interdimensional travelers
demanding their property back? Will Herself make a ruling on this? Only time will
tell, and time doesn't talk much.
In brief, because we don't have enough fights to be long, even if I talk on and
on and on, the fights--
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (17-7-2,51) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought TIRYA (46-3594)
(18-30-0,44) of SAND DANCERS. VINCENT CRABBE was beaten by TIRYA in an exciting 1
minute gory bout. Do we look for secret meanings in this? Did Vincent make crude
boyish advances to Tirya, which she resented? Or is she simply more experienced?
JON SNOW (78-2389) (17-1-1,66) of DARK TOADS fought MICKEY HATCHER (74-3356)
(19-5-0,65) of 1988 DODGERS. JON SNOW overpowered MICKEY HATCHER in a 1 minute one-
sided bout. I hear that Jon didn't even get all the way home before he was called
back. And I hope he was glad for the call--think of the snow that's already falling
on Tirian province! Brrr!
THOMAS (82-14150) (2-1-0,7) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II fought DARLINA (74-2995) (22-
16-2,65) of SAND DANCERS. THOMAS was overpowered by DARLINA in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched brawl. Hang in there, Thomas. I've seen it before--a very young
warrior coming out of the lower levels of the Dead Tourney straight to the Isle, and
it's tough. You've got a long way to go before you can compete on a level with these
more experienced warriors. But there are plenty of Sand Dancers! Though you're
still the lowest-ranked warrior here, I have no doubt that you'll work your way up.
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (56-78-1,138) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought TOM RIDDLE (74-3501)
(20-3-2,99) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. KYRLANIA overpowered TOM RIDDLE in an action packed
1 minute uneven struggle. And congratulations to Kyrlania for this victory, and even
more, for her manager's attention. Is this the beginning of a trend? Maybe we'll be
seeing tough competetion here in Lirin Kiv again.
TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106) (58-57-2,177) of SANGUINE SAINTS fought JAMMIES (74-
2829) (53-50-1,122) of DARKLINGS. TRAM SATANS BLOOD was overcome by JAMMIES in an
action packed 1 minute fight. For shame, Jammies, taking advantage of a blind man
like that! Your mother taught you better, at least, I hope she did! What have you
got to say for yourself?
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (56-47-4,152) of SAND DANCERS fought VALLANT (38-
4151) (31-8-2,102) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. TORYN TYL DAGEDA beat VALLANT in a 2
minute conflict. Even with Vallant entering tourneys, and I don't know for sure that
he HAS done that, this is not what you'd call an even match. Therefore,
congratulations are in order to Vallant for drawing it into the second minute.
KHORA THE SMALL (78-519) (98-131-3,185) of SAND DANCERS fought CYLADIA (51-1122)
(85-98-0,187) of SKAITHVARN. KHORA THE SMALL was devastated by CYLADIA in a 1 minute
one-sided battle. And so Khora still has not regained her coveted position as top-
ranked basher. What will she do if she gets inducted? No way she'll make top of the
heap there.
ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (38-71-3,184) of THE DRAGON FIST fought ALYAHOODI (11-2219)
(50-66-1,198) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. ZALMARDARIN was bested by ALYAHOODI in a 3 minute
conflict. Despite this loss, Zalmaradarin IS our top-ranked basher, and is now
Khora's nemesis. This should be an interesting contest to follow. Even without
challenges. Khora will be sure to make comments, will Zalmardarin reply?
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (46-60-0,182) of THE DRAGON FIST fought BRAND (82-
13289) (14-9-1,175) of TOADS OF AMBER III. CORT NIGHTJEWEL defeated BRAND in an
exciting 1 minute match. What can I deduce from or about this fight? Very little,
to be frank. Not that I want to be Frank. I think I prefer George, myself. But I
could observe that there is a strong difference in visible experience here, which
makes Brand's defeat no surprise and no embarrassment.
DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862) (71-61-2,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought TEMPUS (31-
538) (31-29-0,175) of THE STORMGUARDS. DARKMOON BLACKFELL overpowered TEMPUS in a
popular 1 minute uneven match. Obviously, Darkmoon is not eclipsed this month! And
I note here and elsewhere that The Icelord has returned to Lirin Kiv with warriors
for our sands. A welcome to him.
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (54-76-0,190) of DARKLINGS fought TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (59-67-
0,191) of SAND DANCERS. NIGHTCAP overpowered TAIRIKIA in a popular 1 minute uneven
duel. Uneven? What the HECK are the recorders thinking of to call this "uneven"? A
closely matched pair. Too close, perhaps? Is there some secret sympathy between
this couple? Are they... a couple? Surely not! After all, Tairikia is Rirorni.
RUSTLING BREEZE (33-6478) (29-25-1,199) of THE WASTING FIELD fought DEADBOLT
(70-1664) (67-86-2,179) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. RUSTLING BREEZE was vanquished by
DEADBOLT in a 1 minute uneven duel. It would appear that the Breeze was, dare I say
it, "blown away." Such is life in the arena.
FENGAR II (20-61) (103-71-1,256) of OVERLORDS fought ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232)
(26-26-1,200) of SPLIT INFINITY. FENGAR II was viciously subdued by ROBERTO LEATHAM
in an action packed 2 minute fight. And in this last of our random matches today,
Roberto claws his way to a winning record. A salute, Roberto.
And now the challenge matches, such as they are--
MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP (1-6882) (20-14-0,70) of LADY OF THE GLEN challenged
DAMORETH STENN (65-6105) (30-28-0,76) of SAND DANCERS. Up 6. MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP
was overpowered by DAMORETH STENN in a 1 minute struggle. But gently. Apparently
Damoreth still wants Marian to come to his keep and train ravens. Or something like
that.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (32-32-1,165) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged THE QUICKLING
(70-1669) (45-101-2,179) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 14. SEMIRHAGE assassinated THE
QUICKLING in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. Oops! Doubtless unintentional,
but still.... Not that Quickling has much to complain about, given the difference in
experience here. Still.... Well, these things DO happen. And if you're going to
die, what better place to do it than on the Isle, where it isn't permanent?
TREMERE (9-4915) (27-2-0,154) of DARK TOADS challenged SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513)
(56-54-1,182) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 28. TREMERE was unbelievably bested by SMOLDER
DARKSUN in a 3 minute Challenge fight. Ouch! Looks like Tremere is having a really
bad streak here. These things tend to snowball. Stop it NOW, Tremere. Fight a Sand
Dancer.
INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611) (39-44-4,205) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged BAT (74-
2742) (63-68-1,206) of DARKLINGS. Up 1. INIGO MONTOYA defeated BAT in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute Challenge duel. You could call it a home-town match, but were
these warriors active in the capital at the same time? My memory may be spotty, but
I don't think so.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (31-22-1,199) of DARK TOADS challenged DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-
1970) (76-56-0,220) of SAND DANCERS. Up 21. SHYLOCK was demolished by DEANJLI TYL
RHU in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Looks to me like Deanjli is definitely
lined up in the "soon to be Inducted" queue.
And for the Horn and the title--
TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (54-79-7,230) of SCARLET KNIGHTS challenged NIGHTFALL
(74-2421) (80-87-2,227) of DARKLINGS. Down 3. TALON WARSMITH viciously subdued
NIGHTFALL in a 2 minute Challenge Title fight. It's good to see somebody other than
a Toad issuing a challenge. Well, okay, and Root of All Evil is issuing challenges.
But is anybody else? It looks to me like we've got a lot of managers asleep at the
switch here. Ah, well, congratulations to our new Champion of the Horn. Write us a
column, Talon.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I am going to be dropping Ian and Winston from this squad. I do not believe
they will be effective in the future under the new system. I am re-adding Jon Snow
to my fine squad and the newest member of the alive community, Thomas, who did rather
well in the dead adepts tournament. I expect many horrific losses to come his way in
exchange for the many skills I plan to gather. -- TigToad
Rillion -- BTW, welcome to Lirin Kiv. -- TigToad
Alyahoodi -- Now THAT was a good fight. Too bad it could be my last. -- Winston
Stile -- Thanks for the title shot. Sorry I couldn't offer you a better fight, but
you jumped on top and stayed there. Congrats. Talon sends his love. -- Darkmoon
Nightfall -- It's the curse of my style at this level of the game. -- Deadbolt
Jammies -- But no so good, as my record shows. Potential...that's what Armalias is
always talking about... -- The Quickling
Nightcap -- I'm actually a dragon, but I can't seem to get the Commission to make the
change for me. Something about not being allowed to fight in my natural form.... --
Zalmardarin
Would you be interested in being listed as a newt, or maybe a skink?
Nightengale -- Sing a song just for me and all is forgiven. -- Smolder
Bat -- Glad to be of assistance. Come back for another lesson any time. -- Talon
Shylock -- Hmm. I' not used to losing fights that go that long. Well done. --
Deadbolt
Tremere -- Don't let Larkin fool you into thinking we're easy targets. We're not. --
Cort
Ian -- Thank you SO much for that win, laddie. I desperately needed it. -- The
Quickling
Deanjli -- Phbbblllttt!!!! -- Smolder
Nightcap -- Bad matchup for you, friend. Best of luck in the future. -- Talon
Nightfall -- No that was not the way the fight was supposed to go. I'm HUGE!!! I
should never lose!!! I'm...oh, okay. Well done. -- Zalmardarin
Jammies -- You're not faring so well against us, are you. Better luck next time. --
Kyrlania
Larkin -- Take note...personal ads from Scarlet Knights, et al. -- Armalias *grin*
And I'm glad to welcome you back to the ranks of the vcoal. I hope this is a
trend and not a one-shot deal.
Semirhage -- To your hands and knees? Darn, I was trying for flat out on the sands.
I guess I must be getting soft from hanging around with all these Adantri. --
Tairikia the chagrined
P.S. Sorry about your winning record, but if I'm to have one of those myself, I have
to win, which means you have to lose. No draws, alas.
Smolder Darksun -- A bucket of water will soon put that out. -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Bat -- It is YOUR fault that I once again slipped off the pinnacle of basherdom, and
don't think I'll forget it! -- Khora the Small and Furious
No one likes a Cheating Manager, and he broke both my swords, as well. I wish I'd
killed him. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
P.S. He was a Fratsfan. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Vallant -- (groaning) You sure tried to blend me into one big bruise. -- Darlina
Vincent Crabbe -- Now they're sending kids against me? Cheese. -- Damoreth Stenn
Marian of Ravenskeep -- Tell you what, *I* will retire and keep ravens. -- Tirya
Brand -- Mine. It's right next to the wine cellar. -- Tairikia

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager

All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex
