In the Far West:
Shania Silverstar stared at the man, eyes narrowed in calculation. She sorted
data quickly. A man of the local race, one she'd never seen before, not that she'd
seen all the races of Ghea. An advanced gladiator. The nearest of Lady Greywand's
arenas lay to the east of here, in Lirith Kai. And the westernmost of those
arenas.... "You're from Simtakka?"
"Smart as well as beautiful, I see." Faintly sneering. Not mocking her--she
thought that he probably faced all life with a sneer. "I earned my immortality in
Simtakka," he admitted after a moment. His scarred hands flexed. "I did it the hard
way, too. The Adantri aren't all pushovers."
"The ones I've met aren't," Shania agreed. "And their sense of honor is strong.
Very strong."
He bristled immediately. "If you're expecting that kind of soft-in-the-head
honor from ME--"
Shania smiled faintly. Some things a woman didn't need magic to understand.
"You could have attacked me while I slept," she said. "But you didn't. Yes, I am
expecting that honor from you. My name is Shania Silverstar, I graduated from an
Andorian arena." She held out her hand.
"Andorian. Gods, I should have known...a lot more softheaded than the Adantri.
Gods curse the luck." When her extended hand didn't waver, he finally grasped it and
shook it once, then turned away. Over his shoulder, he growled, "I'm called Zakar."
"Zakar. Good. If you have food out there, I would be glad to share it with
you."

"There shouldn't BE a reef here!" Werre said again, scowling at his chart.
"But we're stuck on one just the same," Jammies said with cheerful tactlessness.
"Where do you suppose it came from?"
"Doesn't matter where it came from," Ashon Chang growled. "The important thing
is getting off it before the waves pound us into pieces."
"Which they will do," Rughal added, studying the clouds that were being driven
up from the south by a strong wind, and the increasingly rough sea below them.
"This is some kind of magical effect," Herlas muttered. He had been tentatively
readmitted to comrade-ship and allowed to move about the ship freely...although
Rughal was usually not far away. "The reef, at least. The coming storm," he turned
to stare southward, "I don't know. Even that MIGHT be magical. There's a mishmash
of forces at work here...."
"Can magic get us off this reef then?" Werre asked suddenly. "Can you do
something?"
Herlas shrugged. "I don't think so. This is not my area of expertise--weather,
ships, and the moving of large objects." His eyes, unusually dark for a Fratsfan,
narrowed as he stared into the water. "This is what comes of not stabilizing the Eye
quickly enough," he muttered. "It could have been prevented--" He twitched when
Rughal, standing behind him, growled. More briskly, he went on, "I don't think
there's a lot I can do here, very powerful forces are at work--more powerful than
those any one, or any two men, for that matter, can muster. And if our hull has been
damaged, we might not WANT to get the ship off this reef, you know! Better to be
stranded than to sink."
"We won't sink if we get moving quickly enough," Werre countered. "If we get
off right away. But if we stay here and let the wind and the waves pound us and drag
us back and forth across whatever it is we hit--"
"Looks like the top of a belfry," Jammies said, hanging over the side.
Werre looked at Ashon Chang, who stared back at him. Then both of them glanced
around. They were in the middle of a plain of water, with not even a rocky islet to
be seen.
"I don't suppose it matters what we hit," Ashon Chang said after a moment. The
important thing is to get off it without having the bottom torn out of our ship."
"Well, at least this explains why there aren't a lot of other ships following
this good current," Vurand said. "What do we do?"
"Two men over the side," Werre decided. "With ropes to keep them from being
swept away, of course. To find out exactly how we're hung up." He glanced around
the little group. "I presume all of you can swim?"
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Shania washed her hands in the little stream that flowed through the shrine,
then sat back against the wall and sighed. "I needed that, thank you. Delicious."
Zakar, squatting on the other side of the stream licked his own fingers and
snorted. "Delicious," he repeated mockingly. "I bet you never ate korry in your
life."
"That the food was unfamiliar doesn't make it necessarily inedible," she
retorted. She glanced out the doorway of the shrine. Twilight had fallen, but the
sounds of a large population were still audible, and the light breeze carried the
scent of thousands of cooking fires as well as the smell of a seacoast. "How long
can we stay here?"
Zakar shrugged. "I don't suppose Hodan cares, even if he really is a god and
not just a myth. But we're both going to have people looking for us, and sooner or
later, they'll look here."
Shania blinked. "They'd violate a religious sanctuary? And what 'they', come
to think of it? I know I am likely to be pursued by priests, but what about you?"
"Everybody'd like to catch me." He seemed to take satisfaction in that. "I'm a
flaming revolutionary. And a heretic, too. 'Course, those're the same thing, here
in Zinaco." At her surprised look, he added, "They're a theocracy."
"What did you do to--? No, that's none of my business, I suppose. How do we
get out of here before we're found? Do we work together," she wasn't sure she wanted
to work with Zakar, there was something about him...but he was the only potential
ally she had here, "or each manage our escape separately?"
Zakar was silent for a long time, studying her with a critical gaze, the way he
might look at a horse he was thinking of buying. From someone he didn't trust.
Finally he said, "We work together." His hard mouth curled into a smile of sorts.
"I've got half an idea, but it would mean playing roles--you much good as an
actress?"
Shania's eyes narrowed. He seemed too pleased with his idea for it to be
something she was going to like. "Depends on the role." She considered mentioning
her magical skills and immediately decided against it. Better to keep that knowledge
in reserve until she knew Zakar better. And maybe not then.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
In the end, it was Ashon Chang and Rughal who went over the side. "Because,"
the samurai explained to Rughal as he slid down a rope and into the water, "we are
victims of our own honor. Werre must remain with the ship, as our most skilled
sailor, neither Jammies nor Vurand swims well, and Herlas claims that he cannot swim
at all. Less honorable men than we are might point out--" He gasped. "The water is
colder than I expected! Might point out," he continued, moving out of the path of
Rughal's descent, "that no great degree of swimming is required, and there ARE the
safety ropes...."
Rughal laughed, which Ashon Chang considered a small victory; the ranger hadn't
so much as smiled since Shania had been taken from them. "I'd go back up and do just
that," he said, "but we're already down here and wet, so we might as well take a look
at things."
The two men made their way along the small ship's waterline, probing with light
poles for depth. Rughal, who was in the lead, made the first find. "Something
here," he said, handing Ashon his pole. "I'll take a look." Before the samurai
could reply, he doubled and thrust downward vanishing beneath the surface.
The next minute seemed a very long one, and Ashon Chang began to hyperventilate
in preparation for diving himself.
Rughal resurfaced, gasped in breath, and said, "It IS a belfry! Or at least the
roof of some kind of tower. Hard to tell what, and who cares? I think we can get
off when the wind changes, IF it changes, as it usually does at sunset."
"Is the hull damaged?"
"Not that I can see. It's a roof with two ridge poles, and the front of our
ship is sitting between them like they were the jaws of a vice. We can't go forward,
but we should be able to go back, if the wind will cooperate." Rughal grabbed his
rope and began to pull himself up hand over hand.
"Excellent!" Ashon Chang began to pull himself up as well. "If the wind
doesn't cooperate, we will get Herlas to do it."

Not Lirin Kiv:
Shylock, who had been lurking behind a hedge of rosebushes as Master Dan Shao
explained the war with the Grey Witch to Clemenda, frowned and sank down onto a handy
bench. This would require thought. This "Grey Witch of the East" sounded nearly as
powerful as Sheila Greywand, and if that was the case, she was a threat to his plans.
She would have to be removed--which had the added advantage that it would apparently
make him a hero to these people. Or else he would have to write off this world as a
place to establish himself and find some other. Because he had no intention of
sharing power....
The thing to do, he decided, was to visit the home city of this Witch. He
didn't have to actually meet her to discover just how much of a danger she might be.
But he had to be closer. And fortunately, there was an obvious reason for the
journey: He, and also Clemenda, which would get her out of the hands of that cursed
Master Dan Shao, would be seeking aid in finding and closing the Gate that had
brought them here. An obvious reason, and one that no one could fault.
He would propose the plan to Dan Shao immediately. No point in wasting time.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't see why we had to rush off like this," Clemenda muttered. "Another day
or two wouldn't have mattered."
"It might matter," Shylock assured her. "With magic, you can never tell about
things like that. It MIGHT matter." He drew her down onto the bench beside him,
smiling at the water that separated them from Master Dan Shao. More water every
minute. "Besides," he said, "I promised you dinner in Talahya, and I can fulfill
that promise till we get home."
"But the Gate we came through must have been back there on that island!"
"Gates are magic and don't always follow linear logic, my dear."
"But--"
"And besides, Dan Shao sent men out to search the island, and they reported that
the Gate is gone. Or at least closed." He shrugged. "So we need to consult someone
who understands the magic of this world. Dan Shao said the greatest magician or
wizard or whatever you want to call her, the Grey Witch, lives on an island--Thallia,
it's called--to the east."
Clemenda sighed. "Okay, I don't argue with your logic, I guess. But I hope
it's not FAR to the east, because I don't like sailing." She swallowed twice and
moved back toward the rail, leaning over it. "I really don't...."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't know how far it is to Thallia," the ship's captain said. "I don't sail
there. Just the Irindan Sea, and to the Pillars of Gold, the gates of the Middle
Sea, you know, no farther." He gestured toward the east. "It's dangerous out there!
Our Sea Patrols keep order in the Irindan, but the Middle Sea is full of pirates.
Dangerous place, and you'd do better not to go. Stay in Lirith Kai. No place else
is as good anyway."

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
The never-ending story: another fight day. The two hundred thirty-sixth, to be
exact. At least, that's the count for Lirin Kiv. Some good intentions fell by the
way, others may have been revived, and it isn't even New Year's yet.
Scarlet Knights were most avoided, unnecessarily, as they have slipped back into
their coma. The Stormguards, recently returned to this arena, avoided them the most.
Darlina got the most challenges, though not through making idle boasts, surely!
Idle boasts don't sound like her "thing." And she hasn't got much to boast about in
an un-idle sense.
We had twenty-two fights, up from last time, and only one standby fought. This
is good. We need to see this increase continuing! Nine challenge matches, of which
two were TV, and our congratulations to the warriors how had those TV challenges to
use. No one died, which saves a lot of hassle and annoyance. And the longest fight
was... three minutes? THREE minutes? That hardly qualifies as a "long fight"!
Anyway, here ARE the fights.
MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (18-12-1,73) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought UNEMPLOYED
PERSON (107-5) (0-0-0,70) of Imported Fans. MIDNIGHT FAITH subdued UNEMPLOYED PERSON
in an action packed 1 minute bout. I should hope so! And a hearty welcome to
Midnight Faith and the other paranoids. We're glad to see you here.
MICKEY HATCHER (74-3356) (19-6-0,59) of 1988 DODGERS fought AMPLITUR (65-6440)
(14-3-1,46) of DARK TOADS. MICKEY HATCHER devastated AMPLITUR in an action packed 1
minute one-sided bout. I'm glad the arenamaster stepped in before Mickey managed to
pry the jewel out of Amplitur's forehead. That sort of trophy isn't Standard
Equipment, after all.
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (17-8-2,42) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought DISORDER (65-
6419) (17-7-1,59) of PARANOIA. VINCENT CRABBE was overpowered by DISORDER in a 1
minute mismatched conflict. You SEE, Disorder? It's TRUE. They're ALL OUT TO GET
YOU. You're going to have to hit them FIRST.
FLIGHT (75-2606) (19-11-2,70) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought KING LOVE (40-3748) (16-
14-2,51) of SUNNYLAND. FLIGHT overpowered KING LOVE in a 1 minute one-sided bout.
This was practically in passing, as Flight seemed to be in a great hurry to get to
somewhere else. Well, I can understand. I wouldn't mind getting to somewhere else
myself! Somewhere with a beach, sun, gentle surf, tables shaded by colorful
umbrellas, attentive waitresses in grass skirts bring cool drinks, you know, the
whole nine yards.
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (57-47-4,157) of SAND DANCERS fought TRAM SATANS
BLOOD (65-1106) (58-58-2,145) of SANGUINE SAINTS. TORYN TYL DAGEDA was overpowered
by TRAM SATANS BLOOD in a 2 minute one-sided bout. You should've been able to do
better than THAT, Toryn. You see what it is--Tram, coming from below, was trying
harder!
TEMPUS (31-538) (31-30-0,173) of THE STORMGUARDS fought KYRLANIA (70-2327) (57-
78-1,148) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TEMPUS bested KYRLANIA in a crowd pleasing 2 minute
brawl. No surprise here. Manager attention is important. Trust me on this,
Kyrlania.
TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (59-68-0,180) of SAND DANCERS fought JAMMIES (74-2829) (54-
50-1,157) of DARKLINGS. TAIRIKIA devastated JAMMIES in an exciting 1 minute uneven
duel. Ooooh, is Jammies in trouble, or what? No personals, loses a fight, and he's
in an adventure--a recipe for disaster!
SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513) (57-54-1,194) of THE DRAGON FIST fought RUSTLING BREEZE
(33-6478) (29-26-1,179) of THE WASTING FIELD. SMOLDER DARKSUN overpowered RUSTLING
BREEZE in a 1 minute one-sided duel. What I want to know is, does the name "Smolder
Darksun" have something to do with an eclipse? Are we looking at prophesy here?
BAT (74-2742) (63-69-1,196) of DARKLINGS fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (47-60-
0,189) of THE DRAGON FIST. BAT devastated CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched bout. I understand that Bat was named for the little mammal that
flies around eating bugs, but today he acted more like a bludgeon.
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (80-88-2,196) of DARKLINGS fought THE QUICKLING (70-1669)
(45-102-2,162) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTFALL (of Darklings, as opposed to any other
Nightfalls who might happen to be around) handily defeated THE QUICKLING in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided contest. She fell on him, in fact, like, well, like
night coming down. Sudden, complete, dark. You know.
CYLADIA (51-1122) (86-98-0,197) of SKAITHVARN fought DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862)
(72-61-2,202) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. CYLADIA was subdued by DARKMOON BLACKFELL in a 2
minute competition. This seems to be another one of those mythic subductions--a dark
moon, or perhaps a new one, falling on a hapless warrior. Will either of them speak
of what this has meant to them?
ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232) (27-26-1,224) of SPLIT INFINITY fought NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (55-76-0,202) of DARKLINGS. ROBERTO LEATHAM was handily defeated by NIGHTCAP
in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Handily. Which means how many hands were involved
here? Is, perhaps, Nightcap monkey-like in having four effective hands, rather than
two? That would certainly be "handy" for somet hings.
And the challenge matches--
JON SNOW (78-2389) (18-1-1,83) of DARK TOADS challenged DAMORETH STENN (65-6105)
(31-28-0,88) of SAND DANCERS. Up 5. JON SNOW vanquished DAMORETH STENN in a 1
minute uneven Challenge fight. Odd, this. It's supposed to be the snow that
vanishes, or is vanquished, or whatever. Say, do you suppose that if Jon fought
Smolder Darksun, the two names would result in Snow vanishing?
THOMAS (82-14150) (2-2-0,14) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II challenged TIRYA (46-3594)
(19-30-0,59) of SAND DANCERS. Up a bunch, hmm, how about... 45? THOMAS lost to
TIRYA in an action packed 2 minute Challenge duel. Where's Krondur? I or II, either
one.
MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP (1-6882) (20-15-0,63) of LADY OF THE GLEN challenged
DARLINA (74-2995) (23-16-2,67) of SAND DANCERS. Up 4. MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP handily
defeated DARLINA in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Without ravens, which seems
unfilial to me. After all, Marian must have at least grown up with ravens, don't you
think? If, as one must assume, she grew up at Ravenskeep, i.e. the place where they
keep those unkind birds.
TREMERE (9-4915) (27-3-0,158) of DARK TOADS challenged ALYAHOODI (11-2219) (51-
66-1,200) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. Up 42. TREMERE overpowered ALYAHOODI in a 2 minute
one-sided Challenge struggle. Ah, good! Nothing personal, Alyahoodi, but we were
beginning to wonder what had happened to Tremere's sure hand and steady eye. Or
maybe it's a steady hand and a sure eye.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (31-23-1,194) of DARK TOADS challenged DEADBOLT (70-1664) (68-
86-2,201) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 7. SHYLOCK was devastated by DEADBOLT in a 1
minute uneven Challenge brawl. Nothing like a major difference in experience to
weight a fight. I hope the skills were exchanged freely here. Stinginess is un-
Adantri or something.
FENGAR II (20-61) (103-72-1,196) of OVERLORDS challenged INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611)
(40-44-4,211) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL. Up 15. FENGAR II was overpowered by INIGO
MONTOYA in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Young but tough, that's Inigo. I
suppose Fengar didn't have six fingers?
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (33-32-2,184) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged ZALMARDARIN
(78-312) (38-72-3,184) of THE DRAGON FIST. Straight across. SEMIRHAGE savagely
defeated ZALMARDARIN in a crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge duel. It would appear
that the Root of All Evilers are really getting into their stride today. Good going.
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (20-4-2,99) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE TV challenged VALLANT (38-
4151) (31-9-2,114) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. Up 15. TOM RIDDLE demolished VALLANT in a
1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Congratulations to Tom on having a TV challenge.
Can't expect Vallant to beat that, I guess. But tell me, Vallant, have you worked
out the answer to "When is a door not a door?"
BRAND (82-13289) (14-10-1,172) of TOADS OF AMBER III TV challenged KHORA THE
SMALL (78-519) (98-132-3,176) of SAND DANCERS. Up 4. BRAND was devastated by KHORA
THE SMALL in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Congratulations to Brand on his
TV challenge, also. And congratulations to Khora on returning to her desired honor
as Top Basher. There's something to be said in favor of simple, achievable goals,
after all.
And for the Horn: TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (55-79-7,238) of SCARLET KNIGHTS
fought DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (77-56-0,235) of SAND DANCERS. A random match, and
a close one. TALON WARSMITH was vanquished by DEANJLI TYL RHU in a 1 minute one-
sided Title fight. Our congratulations go to Deanjli for returning to this coveted
position.

THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN
PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
It's a strange feeling not having to write a column for the Champion of the Horn.
Hopefully, the new champion will continue the tradition. -- TigToad
My record keeps suffering with lousy turns, yet this time I'm not even unhappy.
Great learns, keep up the good work on training all my guys! -- TigToad
As long as you're happy, we're happy.
Deadbolt -- Thank you for your congratulations. I am not used to winning fights that
go that long, so we are both surprised. -- Shylock
Cort -- As long as you run on maintenance and I have an idea of your strategies,
you'll forgive me if I continue to challenge you. Now if you activate and write
personal ads, that's totally a different matter. -- TigToad & Tremere
Maybe next time we have an ice storm at the GC offices.... -- Ed.
That soon? -- Larkin
The Quickling -- You are welcome for the win and my retirement which came as a
result. Well, kinda. -- Ian
Armalias -- Personal ads! Unheard of. I heard a rumor that Zalgor was going to
write ads also.... I mean, if everyone starts talking, how will I get in my private
conversations with Li Dan?
Doesn't seem like you have any need to worry.
Tirya -- You can keep ravens if you like, but I have no ravens of my own to let you
use. -- Marian of Ravenskeep
Tairikia -- Wine cellar? I'll take a nice strong red. -- Brand
All -- Welcome Amplitur to my ADM ranks. The cruel system took him after he did well
in the champions tourney. -- TigToad
Tairikia -- Yes, everything broke down for me in our fight. Maybe in a 10 rounds or
so I might be better equipped to offer a challenge. Hopefully your record will
improve without my help. ;) -- Semirhage
The Quickling -- Sorry about killing you last turn. I may have been a touch testy
with my recent string of losses. Nothing personal. -- Semirhage
Bat -- I don't believe we ever crossed paths in our home arena did we? Close fight
though. -- Inigo
Shylock -- Your determination is admirable, but doesn't this run up your hospital
bills? -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Marian of Ravenskeep -- Nothing like meeting old friends, is there? -- Damoreth Stenn
Nightcap -- (hiss of annoyance) -- Tairikia
Cyladia -- (furious growl of annoyance, not to mention wrath) -- Khora the Small and
Furious
Vallant -- I hope that rating helps you! You certainly appear to have a need for it.
-- Toryn tyl Dageda
Thomas -- I can see you are a Toad of Towering Intellect, the way you sucked up those
skills. -- Darlina
Vincent Crabbe -- Splendid! I really NEEDED that win. -- Tirya
13 November 2003
Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager
13 November 2003
All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex
