In the Far West:
"Roofs?" Herlas leaned across the rail and peered down into the water. "I've
heard of the Drowned Land, of course, but I hadn't realized it would be on our
course, and so close to the surface--"
Ashon Chang grabbed the wizard's belt and hauled him back. "You can't swim,
remember? And we aren't stopping here to explore, even if you can. We have more
important things to do." He glanced across at Werre. "As soon as the wind changes,
we should be able to get loose."
The Adantri nodded. "Sooner, I think. You might not realize it, but even here
in the middle of this sea, there are tides, and the tide is rising. We should float
off any time now." He frowned at the plain of water around them, and the distant
line of darkness on the horizon that was probably land. "I just hope we don't hit
any other...roof before we get away from this place."
"So do we all," Vurand growled. "Roofs instead of reefs! Drowned cities! The
sooner we get our feet back on dry land, the happier I'll be."

"You could never pass yourself off as Tzaltakkan," Zakar said. "Your coloring
is wrong--we could fix that, maybe, but your face is the wrong shape, too. And
everybody in this city who isn't Tzaltakkan by blood is a slave. Besides, you don't
speak the language."
Shania Silverstar scowled, already not liking where this seemed to be going.
"There must be, I don't know, traders from other lands? Travelers--big cities always
have foreign travelers--"
"Not in Zinaco-Lal. No foreigner gets into this city as a free man. Traders
and travelers don't get past the outer harbor and the Foreigners' Quarter. We're in
the heart of the city here, woman. And no matter when we leave the shrine, you will
be seen. Count on it. So you have to be--to at least look like--something that
won't raise questions. The slave of someone of true Tzaltakkan blood. And," he went
on before she could answer, "people will be looking for you. You specifically--
blonde, fair-skinned. So we have to make you unmemorable. As much as possible,
anyway. So we'll dye your hair black and darken your skin as much as we can, too."
He studied her, frowning.
Shania could see that now he had forgotten whatever personal pleasure he took in
the thought of her posing as his slave and was considering the practical aspects.
She turned her own thoughts to the practical aspects. Distasteful as the proposed
ruse was, Zakar was probably right when he said it was the only thing that would work
here and now. She could change her appearance magically...no, better not. That
change could be made as well with simple physical means. Better save what magical
energy she had at the moment for a serious need. "Soot will do for my hair if you
can't find anything better," she said briskly. "Red ochre, maybe, for my skin? And
tea or something like it, to take the white out of this shift."
He nodded. "I've got a contact who can get what we'll need." He smiled without
humor. "In a brothel." He moved to the exit from the shrine. "It shouldn't take me
long to get the stuff. Stay here and stay out of sight until I get back."
He was gone before she could utter any of the remarks that sprang to mind, such
as that she was smart enough not to go out and be recognized, and wasn't his servant,
and....

It was the tide that finally got their ship off the roof. Imperceptible so far
from shore, the waters rose. The only sign of it was the slow drag and the final
lift that freed the vessel. Though it was late in the day, Werre sent the ship
shoreward--according to their charts, at least--as quickly as possible. He put
Jammies and Vurand in the bow to watch for other obstacles so long as there was light
enough to see them. But apparently the tower that had caught them was the tallest
building left in the drowned city. By sunset, there were no more roofs to be
glimpsed in the water.
"Some day," Herlas muttered, "I will come back here. There are spells that
would permit exploration of that which is sunken, if it does not lie to deep. To be
the first man in millennia to look upon the towers of vanished Melantea...."
"There are probably lots of western wizards who've dived on these ruins," Ashon
Chang countered. "Why not? It's right in their back yard."
"Never!" the Fratsfan responded immediately. "The gods could not do that to
me--"
Vurand's scornful laughter cut across his words. "Why should the gods care if
you're the first or the ninety-first?" The Orc squinted at the shore, red hills and
black shadows in the sunset light. As far east along it as he could see, at the
limit of the light was an area where the shapes of light and shadow were straight-
edged, square-cornered. "Will we try to reach that city tonight?"
"No. Too dangerous to go sailing around here in the dark," Werre answered.
"Rocks, ruins, or reefs, we don't want to hit anything else."

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Again I sit here with this stupid drinking horn. All this fancy-work, just to
hold beer? I have to tell you, it looks better on the mantle in our guildhouse, full
of flowers. When flowers are in season, of course. Now I've got evergreens and
stuff in it.
And now that I'm thinking about it, what am I doing here? Somebody somewhere is
hot to shove me into Primus, right? What if I don't want to go?

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
This is awful. Only eighteen fights, and two standbys amongst them! We're
shrinking. Somebody must've left us out in the rain. Tell me it's just the holiday
season, and people will be back in hordes come the new year. Please!
Eighteen fights, eight challenge matches, one of them a TV challenge. No
deaths. Two standbys. The longest fight was THREE MINUTES? You're kidding me,
right? Sure, several matches tied for the three-minute status, but... that's our
longest fight? This is so embarrassing!
Darklings were avoided by Sand Dancers. Surprising, that. Damoreth Stenn got
the most challenges, which is probably two.
Without further ado, because there weren't enough fights to support a decent
ado--
FLIGHT (75-2606) (20-11-2,76) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought UNEMPLOYED PERSON (107-
5) (0-0-0,70) of Other People. FLIGHT was overpowered by UNEMPLOYED PERSON in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided match. Proof positive that THEY'RE OUT TO GET YOU,
Flight! Watch out! No, really, I'm not making fun of you. The ranks of the
Unemployed really ARE out to get you. I dunno why, but I overheard 'em talking about
it in the cafeteria.
THOMAS (82-14150) (2-3-0,21) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II fought MICKEY HATCHER (74-
3356) (20-6-0,73) of 1988 DODGERS. THOMAS was devastated by MICKEY HATCHER in a 1
minute one-sided brawl. Clearly, Mickey was not indulging in any dodging today.
Unless you could call it "dodging forward to the attack," or something. Tough on the
Toad, but that's life.
DISORDER (65-6419) (18-7-1,70) of PARANOIA fought KING LOVE (40-3748) (16-15-
2,48) of SUNNYLAND. DISORDER was handily defeated by KING LOVE in a 1 minute
mismatched bout. This is a cawe of "make love, not war," yes? Of course, for best
results, we should be pitting King Love against, hmm, Talon Warsmith or someone a
similar name, and I don't think the King is quite ready for that. Some other year.
VALLANT (38-4151) (31-10-2,100) of BLENDING ENTHRONED fought AMPLITUR (65-6440)
(14-4-1,43) of DARK TOADS. VALLANT vanquished AMPLITUR in an action packed 1 minute
mismatched bout. Does this mean we have (shudder) blended toads? Or are the toads
blending in color, and no longer simply "dark"? And in what sense can "blending" be
"enthroned"? Inquiring minds want to know.
TREMERE (9-4915) (28-3-0,192) of DARK TOADS fought TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106)
(59-58-2,167) of SANGUINE SAINTS. TREMERE handily defeated TRAM SATANS BLOOD in a 2
minute one-sided conflict. I thought of several comments to make here and finally
decided on simply congratulating Tremere on getting back into the flow of his winning
ways, and encouraging Tram to try harder and maybe write personals. You never know,
it might help.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (31-24-1,186) of DARK TOADS fought RUSTLING BREEZE (33-6478)
(29-27-1,174) of THE WASTING FIELD. SHYLOCK was demolished by RUSTLING BREEZE in a 1
minute one-sided brawl. That was QUITE a breeze there! You can see from his record
that Shylock is no push-over, but he was simply blown away by the Breeze from
Niatoli.
ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232) (27-27-1,190) of SPLIT INFINITY fought ALYAHOODI (11-
2219) (51-67-1,175) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. ROBERTO LEATHAM demolished ALYAHOODI in a 3
minute mismatched competition. Questions arise: is Alyahoodi getting stale? Does he
need some kind of vacation, or maybe a refresher seminar? Is Roberto siginificantly
lacking in respect for his elders? Inquiring minds, having nothing better to do,
would like to know about this, too.
BAT (74-2742) (64-69-1,205) of DARKLINGS fought TEMPUS (31-538) (32-30-0,175) of
THE STORMGUARDS. BAT handily defeated TEMPUS in an exciting 1 minute one-sided bout.
This is hardly hospitable, Bat. Couldn't you at least have made it look difficult?
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (81-88-2,198) of DARKLINGS fought KHORA THE SMALL (78-519)
(99-132-3,188) of SAND DANCERS. NIGHTFALL slimly lost to KHORA THE SMALL in a
popular 2 minute brutal fight. Hard to think of a pretty little lady like Khora as
brutal, isn't it? But if that's what it takes to keep her much-cherished "top
basher" position, she'll do brutal with the best, or maybe the worst, of 'em.
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (56-76-0,214) of DARKLINGS fought VILLAINOUS INFORMER (107-
23) (0-0-0,181) of Other People. NIGHTCAP vanquished VILLAINOUS INFORMER in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided duel. Our last random match, and Nightcap has to
get carried away. (sigh) The Informer might have answered some of those questions
that Inquiring minds were asking, but does he get a chance? Noooo.
And the challenge matches--
MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (19-12-1,78) of PARANOID ASYLUM challenged TIRYA (46-
3594) (20-30-0,61) of SAND DANCERS. Down 17. MIDNIGHT FAITH was savagely defeated
by TIRYA in a 2 minute Challenge melee. Another of those instances where experience
up and smacks the upstarts, as experience has a distressing tendency to do. I hope
Tirya taught well, to make up for it.
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (17-9-2,39) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE challenged DARLINA (74-
2995) (23-17-2,57) of SAND DANCERS. Up 18. VINCENT CRABBE was beaten by DARLINA in
a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge brawl. Whoa, home-town match! Is this something
these two warriors have gone into before? Or did Darlina leave before Vince got a
chance at her? If so, he has now remedied that deficiency. If not, of course, he's
just done it again. Or she has.
MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP (1-6882) (21-15-0,79) of LADY OF THE GLEN challenged
DAMORETH STENN (65-6105) (31-29-0,80) of SAND DANCERS. Up 1. MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP
was viciously subdued by DAMORETH STENN in a 3 minute duel. A surprising outcome.
Is there some hidden significance in this? Does it mean that Marian has agreed to
visit Damoreth's manor and help him clean out his closets? (They have monsters in
them.)
JON SNOW (78-2389) (19-1-1,98) of DARK TOADS challenged TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-
2777) (57-48-4,141) of SAND DANCERS. Up 43. JON SNOW overpowered TORYN TYL DAGEDA
in a 3 minute mismatched Challenge match. Very good work, Jon. You certainly know
how to handle an older woman.
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (21-4-2,129) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE challenged JAMMIES (74-
2829) (54-51-1,153) of DARKLINGS. Up 24. TOM RIDDLE was bested by JAMMIES in a 1
minute Challenge fight. Ah! The jam-smeared warrior from Daiyla Kiv beats the asker
of annoying questions, also from Daiyla Kiv. This is very something-or-other.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (34-32-2,192) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged CYLADIA (51-
1122) (86-99-0,197) of SKAITHVARN. Up 5. SEMIRHAGE was demolished by CYLADIA in a 1
minute uneven Challenge fight. I think it's that Cyladia was worried about getting
her hundredth loss and tried harder, yes?
Our lone TV-challenge, and congratulations to you, Brand. BRAND (82-13289) (14-
11-1,164) of TOADS OF AMBER III TV challenged TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (60-68-0,187) of
SAND DANCERS. Up 23. BRAND devastated TAIRIKIA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge
fight. And not only is Tairikia devastated, she's sore. Very sore.
And for the Horn:
INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611) (41-44-4,237) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged DEANJLI TYL
RHU (76-1970) (78-56-0,246) of SAND DANCERS. Up 7. A salute to you, Inigo, for
caring enough to make the effort. INIGO MONTOYA was vanquished by DEANJLI TYL RHU in
a 1 minute Challenge Title battle. And a second salute to Inigo for not being in a
"one-sided" battle. And congratulations to Deanjli on hanging on to the Horn of the
Champion.
See you all in two weeks, when the year is new.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Roberto Leatham -- Rough fight for you. I can see that you have a lot of potential,
though, so hang in there. -- Nightcap
Darkmoon Blackfell -- Thanks for the consolation drink. Who was that person in the
stands who called you a stupid idiot? I thought you were brilliant. -- Cyladia
The Quickling -- Sorry for all the cliches. You can take a lot of damage, but it
takes outstanding endurance to put up with hackneyed insults at the same time. --
Nightfall
Cort Nightjewel -- You met Sheila Greywand! Woo hoo! What's she like? -- Bat
Tall, dark, and annoyed.
Tiairikiiai -- I apologize for spitting. It is hard to say your name. -- Jammies
Deanjli Tyl Rhu -- Until I convince the commission that I am in over my head at this
rank in the standings, I will have to deal with the hospital bills. -- Shylock
Shylock -- You think that's bad, I'm not as good as you are, and they have me above
you! -- Tremere
Damoreth Stenn -- It's like a reunion. -- Marian
Paranoia -- Welcome to Lirin Kiv! I see a couple of my favorite warriors to hate
have activated, I look forward to meeting you on the sands. -- TigToad
Khora -- Well done, sir. Well done. -- Brand
"Sir"?
Cuz I was asked. Krondur is a misspelling of Krondor. It's the place where my best
friend Pug lives; he's a mage. I put in my information to the commission at a
tournament and TigToad was too lazy to have them correct the misspelling. There was
a group of us that came to compete, and I was in the second group. -- Thomas
Thanks.
Larkin -- Greetings. Nice to be back in Lirin Kiv. How fare thee? I would have
been glad to sponsor an AB Contest here in 2003 but my only eligible AB fell just
before graduation and I really don't have any close to induction. Maybe in 2005.
Happy Holidays to you and yours. -- The Icelord
There are other kinds of contests. Let's think about them.
Lirin Kiv -- Good to be back. What does it take to get a stat raise around here? --
Fengar II
Bribery.
I am in the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all. -- The Icelord
Zalmardarin -- I really wish I had pulled my backup weapon instead of bruising my
knuckles on your plate. Still a win is a win. -- Semirhage
This is true.
Fengar II -- Quite the FE difference between us. Glad I was up to the challenge. --
Inigo
All -- Sorry about the lack of personals last turn. I'm still here, I just missed
it. -- Armalias
Deanjli Tyl Rhu -- Congratulations on your victory. Hopefully, you'll manage to hold
the Horn until I get back up there to take it back. See you at the Gate. -- Talon
Warsmith
Semirhage -- You most definitely should not have beaten me. I'll be challenging you
very soon. -- Zalmardarin
TigToad -- Well, if my strategy works for me, it works for me, whether your guys beat
me or not. -- Cort
Shylock -- Not as easy as you thought, eh? Come back when you want another lesson.
-- Deadbolt
Cyladia -- Not a chance.... -- Darkmoon
Nightfall -- I thought you were going to change your name to Moonrise out of respect
for my teammate? -- The Quickling, who has no doubt of your respect for him....
She missed the Name-Change-O-Rama through inattention.
Bat -- You beat me. Maybe I DO need to update my strategy. Hope to see you at the
Gate. -- Cort
Rustling Breeze -- Ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa!!!!! -- Smolder
Tempus -- Well, at least I lost to a god of War. -- Kyrlania
All -- Let's show those other regions how brave our warriors are here in Lirin Kiv!
See you in the Gate! -- Scarlet Knights, et al
Brand -- Absolutely not! Do you think I'm going to risk my position as top basher by
losing to you? No way! -- Khora the Small
Marian of Ravenskeep -- (heavy sigh) Maybe *I* should retire to a tower and keep
ravens. -- Darlina the fairly disgusted with herself
Thomas -- Where is this "Krondur" place? I never heard of it. -- Tirya
Jon Snow -- You and Tremere. (sigh) Good work. -- Damoreth Stenn
P.S. Looks like my winning record is headed south for the winter, and if I could go
south for the winter, I would too!
Jammies -- (suppressed comments about your sleepers with feet in them) -- Tairikia
Now that's what I'd like to have, sleepers with feet. And I'd like the feet
made with something nice and warm and fuzzy. MY feet wouldn't be so cold then!
-- Ed.
Sleepers with cats on the feet, perhaps? They're not only warm and fuzzy, they
purr.
Tram Satans Blood -- You're a formidable opponent. I salute you. -- Toryn tyl Dageda

Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
