Various places in the Multiverse:
The Dwarf scowled across his desk, a slab of polished granite that would have
looked over-large in front of a giant. His chief wizards looked back at him calmly.
Their employer was a hard man, but he didn't penalize messengers for the bad news
they brought. Usually. "It's HER, isn't it? This it the kind of low, underhanded,
nasty action I'd expect from someone who's part Orc and part Elf. The two worst
races you could find! How bad is it?"
"She's found all the obvious gates," the wizard Skaefin said. "From the power
flux, I assume she plans to close them. This will cause more problems for her than
for us, but still..." his frown was almost as formidable as the Dwarf's. "It's a
matter of principle! We should strike back!"
"Could be dangerous, that," the sorceress Lilinith murmured. "Now that she's
terminating her Kaikwok project, she'll have the manpower to do...many violent
things. We don't NEED that kind of trouble. Sir."
"The real problem will be our manpower." The lizard mage Frilz's voice was dry,
as always, but there was a hint of genuine concern. "Those of our people who
immigrated here from Ghea may find themselves dragged back against their wills. It
could weaken our defense."
"She can retrieve the immigrants?" The Dwarf visibly shrugged off his anger to
concentrate on the immediate threat. "What are the parameters?"
"Not as bad as it might be," Skaefin said promptly. "My researches indicate
there's a time limit. I don't know what, exactly, that limit is--the flux between
dimensions makes it difficult to--"
"Don't make excuses," the Dwarf snapped. "I assume you did your best. What's
the approximate time limit?"
"Six months or so, I think." Skaefin glanced at his fellow wizards for
confirmation.
Both nodded.
"More or less," Frilz confirmed. "It depends on how much of her own power she
wants to expend. Those who came of their own choice and were properly integrated
will be resistant even if they haven't been here long. The ones who stumbled through
gates accidentally...." He spread his hands in the gesture that served his race for
a shrug.
"Loss of the involuntary immigrants won't be a problem," Lilinith agreed. "But
there is a chance, a good one I believe, that people who are closely associated with
them when they are, shall we say, retrieved may be hauled away with them."
"And because they came by chance, we don't know where they are," the Dwarf
finished, "or who they're with." He shrugged. "If that's all she can do, we'll be
fine. She needs us more than we need her. But she's got more than one trick up her
sleeve. The situation will have to be watched closely."
The Dwarf's fourth adviser, the giant Hadrubal, stirred finally. "We might send
a counter-force into HER universe," he rumbled.
"No." The Dwarf's voice was emphatic. "Right now, we're in the right. WE
aren't taking hostile actions, we're the DEFENDERS. That gives us a potent edge in
the forum of multiversal opinion. I won't risk that unless I can be sure that such a
stance would gain us much more. There will be no invasion from here. Not now,
anyway."
Scarlatti had expected them to go by ship to some other island, or to the
mainland of this world, whatever it was. But the lizard men were leading the way to
high ground, and from the arrangement of the trees and stones on that knoll, he
realized that the transportation was going to be magical. Teleportation, perhaps--he
had to remind himself that the instability that made teleportation on Ghea so
dangerous did not apply here. Wherever here was. Possibly a true Gate. Would that
mean that the home of the lizard folk was in a different world, just as Ghea was in a
different world from this one?
"If they can open this Gate," Carris Fallstar muttered, "they can open a Gate to
Ghea."
"It's easier to open a Gate that is already there," Fizban pointed out. "As
this one which will lead us to their home clearly is. The Gate to OUR home will have
to be found or created first. We must do this their way--their Gates first."
"That is the bargain we agreed to," Rogan added.
"I wasn't suggesting we break it," Carris snapped. "You humans are too damned
touchy about things like that--which shows your race's basic unreliability. I was
just making an observation."
The oldest of the lizard men, the one that might be a wizard, though his regalia
of bones and shells and odd bits of this and that seemed more like the gear of a
witchdoctor, gestured them forward. They took positions at his direction, along with
an equal number of lizard warriors.
The old lizard shook his rattle and whistled a call into the sky. Power rippled
around him. Around them. The world faded to gray.
Power rippled across the sea, turning blue water to steel gray and the clear sky
to a dome of white glass.
"Sorcery!" the ship's captain gasped. He made a sign to avert ill fortune.
A futile sign, Shylock knew. The power that gripped this ship, the power he
could feel all around him, was too great for such a simple preventive measure. There
was power enough here to turn the world inside out.
And that was what it was doing.

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Yet again, I have been made aware of the unfairness of life. Toryn, a foreigner
when all is said and done, is preparing to be in a sweeping tale about Lirith Kai,
and yet I, a native-born citizen and long-time Champion of the Horn, remain a
nonentity in a literary sense. Is this fair?
No.
I must make inescapably clear my suitability for heroinehood.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Well, we've had another tourney, and it's been all the things that tourneys
usually are, except maybe not so raucous. And the Evil Inputter didn't hit anybody,
or at least she hadn't by the time I called it a night. And then, a little late,
okay, a lot late, we have our fights. And what do we see, eh? Well, fights, of
course, what else?
We see that Dark Toads avoided Darklings, and who can blame them?
Bat got the most challenges going, which can't have been a terribly high number.
We had twenty-three fights, but before we congratulate ourselves on the
increase, I have to point out (really, it's in my contract) that ws had six standbys
fighting, which means, "No, we did NOT have more active warriors."
Seven of those fights were challenge matches, none were tv-challenges.
Nobody died, which is always a relief.
The longest fight was... FIVE minutes? Sheesh. I saw one fight at the just-
finished tourney that ran six hundred forty minutes. THAT is a fairly long fight.
Five minutes is "barely getting warmed up."
Oh, well, on to the fights--
TIRYA (46-3594) (21-31-0,79) of SAND DANCERS fought KING LOVE (40-3748) (17-16-
2,61) of SUNNYLAND. TIRYA was handily defeated by KING LOVE in a 1 minute uneven
duel. Tirya keeps talking about retiring. I think she should, don't you? Unless
she's teaching her opponents really, really well....
DARLINA (74-2995) (25-17-2,64) of SAND DANCERS fought UNEMPLOYED PERSON (107-5)
(0-0-0,70) of Various Other People. DARLINA overpowered UNEMPLOYED PERSON in a
popular 1 minute one-sided duel. And now you see what he was unemployed. No skills.
Worthless, as they say, and weak.
MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (20-13-1,67) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought DAMORETH STENN
(65-6105) (32-30-0,65) of SAND DANCERS. MIDNIGHT FAITH bested DAMORETH STENN in a
popular 1 minute contest. And if Damoreth's going to get out with a winning record,
he needs to do it RIGHT NOW. Of course, there are a lot of people who defeat him
regularly who might not agree with that. What say you, Midnight? Shall we keep this
dummy on the strength, or send him home in disgrace?
ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (39-78-3,145) of THE DRAGON FIST fought EVIL INPUTTER (107-
7) (0-0-0,110) of Various Other People. ZALMARDARIN was savagely defeated by EVIL
INPUTTER in a popular 3 minute bloody match. We don't call the Inputters "evil" for
a joke, you know! They really ARE.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (56-51-1,164) of DARKLINGS fought TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777)
(57-50-4,117) of SAND DANCERS. JAMMIES overpowered TORYN TYL DAGEDA in an exciting 1
minute one-sided bout. The pajama golem strikes!
DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862) (75-65-3,166) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought CLOTTO (107-
25) (0-0-0,181) of Various Other People. DARKMOON BLACKFELL savagely defeated CLOTTO
in a crowd pleasing 3 minute bloody brawl. Was this kind? Generous? Thoughtful of
the needs and problems of others? No! Of course, Clotto would have been just as
unkind, ungenerous, and unthoughtful, if Darkmoon hadn't been first off the mark.
TRAM SATANS BLOOD (65-1106) (60-59-2,172) of SANGUINE SAINTS fought VALLANT (38-
4151) (32-11-2,115) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. TRAM SATANS BLOOD savagely defeated
VALLANT in an action packed 3 minute struggle. It would appear that the name for
this fight was "unbalanced," eh? Big difference in regular-arena experience and
ranking! That Vallant dragged it out to three minutes has to be a good sign.
TEMPUS (31-538) (32-31-0,171) of THE STORMGUARDS fought ALYAHOODI (11-2219) (51-
69-1,149) of HOLY SLAUGHTER. TEMPUS was overcome by ALYAHOODI in an action packed 5
minute fight. This was our longest fight. Five minutes! That's ridiculous. Almost
insulting. Nothing! Although it probably seemed like forever to Tempus.
SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513) (61-57-3,160) of THE DRAGON FIST fought IMPRISONED SPY
(107-9) (0-0-0,170) of Various Other People. SMOLDER DARKSUN was savagely defeated
by IMPRISONED SPY in a popular 2 minute brawl. By Mantor's Holy Blade, Smolder, if
you can't beat a damned SPY, an ALASTARIAN spy, at that, what have you been DOING?
Not practicing. Carousing? Sleeping late? Lazing around letting the servants pick
up your socks?
JON SNOW (78-2389) (21-1-1,166) of DARK TOADS fought TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (22-5-
2,136) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. JON SNOW devastated TOM RIDDLE in an exciting 1 minute
mismatched conflict. Does this mean Jon Snow should be renamed Jon Blizzard? You
know, he doesn't look like a toad, not like any toad I ever saw....
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (57-84-1,262) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought CLOTTO (107-25) (0-0-
0,181) of Various Other People. KYRLANIA was defeated by CLOTTO in an exciting 1
minute match. Ah, you see how it is, Darkmoon got Clotto stirred up, and Kyrlania
paid for it. That's the way life goes so often. TOO often, I find myself thinking.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (45-108-2,254) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought RIRORNI CAPTAIN
(107-26) (0-0-0,200) of Various Other People. THE QUICKLING was beaten by RIRORNI
CAPTAIN in a 2 minute gory melee. Listen, you guys, you need to talk to your
manager. You shouldn't be losing to the standbys like this! It's embarrassing.
DEADBOLT (70-1664) (69-91-2,343) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought ZALGOR PRIGG (82-
15204) (22-10-0,196) of MUTANT LEAGUE II. DEADBOLT vanquished ZALGOR PRIGG in a 1
minute one-sided fight. One-sided? I should say SO! But it's what happens when you
don't challenge or avoid.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (47-66-0,286) of THE DRAGON FIST fought ROBERTO LEATHAM
(65-6232) (28-28-1,188) of SPLIT INFINITY. CORT NIGHTJEWEL vanquished ROBERTO
LEATHAM in a 2 minute uneven fight. This is another manager who needs to pay some
attention to his warriors! This kind of thing makes an arena into a laughing stock.
KHORA THE SMALL (78-519) (101-132-3,211) of SAND DANCERS fought RUSTLING BREEZE
(33-6478) (30-28-1,186) of THE WASTING FIELD. KHORA THE SMALL vanquished RUSTLING
BREEZE in a 1 minute uneven duel. Can you say, "Experience mis-match"? But she's
managed to remain top basher, and that will doubtless make her easier to get along
with for the next two weeks. Many of us thank you for this, Rustling.
Ah, the challenge matches!
FLIGHT (75-2606) (21-12-2,81) of PARANOID ASYLUM challenged MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP
(1-6882) (22-16-0,85) of LADY OF THE GLEN. Up 4. FLIGHT was narrowly defeated by
MARIAN OF RAVENSKEEP in a 4 minute Challenge brawl. The question uppermost in my
mind at this moment is, "Are we talking about flight as in flapping your wings, or
flight as in getting away from danger?" This could make a difference, you know.
DISORDER (65-6419) (18-8-1,50) of PARANOIA challenged VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498)
(18-10-2,57) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. Up 7. DISORDER defeated VINCENT CRABBE in a 2
minute Challenge struggle. The most amazing thing was the tartar sauce involved in
this defeat. Or is it an eat-feat? Eat-fete? Eat-feet? Whatever.
WINSTON (75-2600) (39-17-0,172) of DARK TOADS challenged BAT (74-2742) (65-70-
1,196) of DARKLINGS. Up 24. WINSTON was overpowered by BAT in a 1 minute mismatched
Challenge match. Bats eat toads? This is news to me. I thought they just ate bugs
(a good thing, of which I approve) or, as the case might be, sucked blood.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (34-34-2,177) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged NIGHTFALL (74-
2421) (82-89-2,195) of DARKLINGS. Up 18. SEMIRHAGE was devastated by NIGHTFALL in a
1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. Be comforted, Semirhage, the sun will rise
again. At least, that's what I'm told by a "usually reliable authority."
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (31-26-1,171) of DARK TOADS challenged NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (57-
77-0,196) of DARKLINGS. Up 25. SHYLOCK was subdued by NIGHTCAP in an action packed
1 minute Challenge fight. Shylock, you need to find out what Nightcap was drinking
and get some yourself.
FENGAR II (20-61) (104-77-2,275) of OVERLORDS challenged TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (61-
69-0,208) of SAND DANCERS. Down 67. FENGAR II vanquished TAIRIKIA in a 2 minute
uneven Challenge battle. No surprise here, except that Tairikia hung on for the
second minute.
INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611) (42-45-4,212) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged CYLADIA
(51-1122) (88-99-0,219) of SKAITHVARN. Up 7. INIGO MONTOYA was devastated by
CYLADIA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. These older women.... Devastating
indeed.
And for the Horn, a random match:
DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (80-56-0,267) of SAND DANCERS fought TALON WARSMITH
(99-101) (56-84-8,321) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DEANJLI TYL RHU defeated TALON WARSMITH
in a 2 minute Title melee. Well done, Champion!

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I apologize for my total lack of personal ads last turn. I don't really have
an excuse, just got busy. My squad this time is going to be very small as I don't
know what my guys will look like after the face. -- TigToad
Battered and bruised.
Tairikia -- Oh my. Now that's an implied offer a guy does not hear every day. Of
course, I understand your attraction to elves. -- Brand
Vincent Crabbe -- Now, I thought style match ups were supposed to be _exciting_.
That fight was miserable. -- Marian
Shylock -- You spit at me! I'm glad I did what I did to you, you nasty little
spitter you. -- Nightfall
Deanjli tyl Rhu -- Ow. I don't know what else to say. That really hurt. Ow. -- Bat
Tremere -- Whooooooaaa. You're scary. You knock me down, you stand totally
motionless, and then that long toady-tongue comes snapping out of nowhere. I just
hope it wasn't, you know, germy. -- Nightcap
But he could fairly ask, were YOU germy?
Rustling Breeze -- That's better than rustling cattle or horses. Why don't you pick
a gender? I know magic is a little unpredictable right now, but there are surgeons
on the Isle who can work wonders. And what fun to be able to choose which you want
to be! -- Cyladia
P.S. Remind your manager to change your training regime.
Toryn tyl Dageda -- Four kills, for a warrior of your style! Wow! Guess I lucked
out, coming out of our fight unhurt. But I think we're rather well matched and
wouldn't mind fighting you again. -- Jammies
Brand -- You're a good boy, and I'll be glad to take you aside tonight for some extra
training. Come by the guildhouse, but use the side door. I'll be waiting. -- Khora
the Small but highly skilled in "social" graces
Amplitur -- (sigh) I didn't need that. (bigger sigh) Maybe I should retire while I
still have a winning record, because surest thing, I'm not going to keep that record
if I keep on "fighting." -- Damoreth Stenn
Marian of Ravenskeep -- They say that a lot of ravens is called an unkindness, and I
see why! But it's better than a murder of crows, I suppose. -- Tirya
Thomas -- It looks like you'll do very well once you get some more experience.
(sigh) That's the story of my life, I meet men, give them a hand, and they leave me
in the dust. -- Darlina
Or sand.
Bat -- Back to your belfry! -- Deanjli tyl Rhu
Winston -- (suspiciously) Are you sure you're a toad and not a turtle? That
carapace is very...turtlous. Chelonian? Whatever. Good try, though. I love to
fight warriors of your style. -- Tairikia
Jammies -- (with dignity) I've been busy studying my part. -- Toryn tyl Dageda

ZalCon2 Updates (1/9/04)
The contest will be starting on the turn due February 23rd, 2004 and run for 20
turns.
Only one team will be allowed for each manager in the contest, regardless of
whether additional teams are announced as contest entries. No exceptions for any
reason.
The Style Master points should read that there is +1 point for beating a member
of your own style even if the warrior is not registered for the contest.
Rolling points for consecutive turns as Style Master means that your warrior
gets the extra point every turn after the first 3 that he continues to hold the
title.
The points for Quality Wins should be clarified to read the winning warrior is
ranked below by the number of recognition points needed for each bonus point at the
start of the fight. For example, Warrior A (3-2-0, 17) beats Warrior B (4-1-0, 35)
and receives 2 bonus points under Quality Win for the 18 point difference in the
ranking.
I believe that is all the clarifications for the moment, please feel free to
email, diplo, call or write me with any other questions or concerns about the
contest.

CHAOTIC WINDS
Once, long ago, the four Winds of Time descended upon Alastari like a TEMPEST of
epic proportions, they slew everything within their all-encompassing reach. They
left nothing. In their wake lay smoldering ruins.
In their haste they sped towards the center of this great land like a colossal
giant would step across an ocean. The four storms picked up momentum on their way
towards each other. A collision was eminent.
The first storm wind, the oldest and wisest of the four was named APEXALUS. The
second, FLAGGSTAFF, was the quickest and loudest entity ever created. The third Wind
of Time was MATRIATIN, neither old or young, quick or slow, but fierce and feisty all
the same. The forth wind, ASSAMITHIUS, the youngest yet most creative in its means
of destruction.
When finally they merged at the center of ALASTARI, an incredible destructive
explosion occurred. And when the smoke and debris cleared they were one. CHAOS was
born.
And Chaos spread across the diminished lands reeking havoc and doom with its
passing, and destroying allover again that which already lay in ruin.
