Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
"Asleep at the switch"? I could only beat Deanjli if someone was "asleep at
the switch"? Thanks, Larkin.
Actually that might be so. Look at our respective records: Me an 86-89-3
striker, she an 83-57-0 wall of steel. She ought to have won. At least the
Commission didn't send her out with no armor and no weapons; it's really embarrassing
to win due to a screw-up like that. No, I got the jump, which strikers tend to do,
and I scored a critical hit right off. As far as I can tell, I won fair and square.
No one was asleep at any switch. Maybe I was a bit lucky. Maybe Deanjli tyl Rhu
should train her health for a while so she can take more than two of those hits.
Anyway, here I am. Wow. The Champion's chair is not that remarkable but it's
got a good view of the fights and Sheila Greywand will sit next to me if she shows
up. I saw her sitting next to Deanjli before our fight. Larkin sits on the opposite
site of the arena, probably to be not so close to the blast if Lady Greywand looses
her lightning. Come to think of it, maybe they should put Greywand's chair a little
farther from the Champion. Maybe Deanjli was half-blinded and deafened during our
fight.
The Horn, though, the Horn is cool. It's decorated and all, there's gold inlay
and I believe that turquoisey-looking stuff is actually jade; it's beautiful. But
the best thing is the sound. They let me blow it. It's mellow yet thrilling, and
the notes carry really far. I bet they can hear it on the mainland. I love blowing
this horn.
Well, I'm rambling. There are four Grand Challenger Champions: Khora the Small,
Tremere, Alix, and Talon Warsmith. I can't really challenge any of them because it
would be a down-challenge. I would like to fight Alix since Bat used to be really
sweet on her, but she didn't fight last turn so it's up to a random match. Not that
I want to hurt Bat's girlfriend. It's just that she's kind of elusive and I wanted
to chat with her. I don't think Khora should get the Horn; I want to see a different
team up here. Tremere has only 36 fights showing and even though 32 of them are
wins, I would feel like a bully facing him. Maybe he or Talon Warsmith will
challenge me. I know Khora won't and Alix can't. Guess I'll be facing one of those
two unless they're afraid of me, which seems really unlikely. We'll see.
I'm Primus eligible already. I hope holding this title doesn't push me over
the edge into induction. Wish me luck with that!
Nightfall
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Another day and the sun is shining. I wouldn't have bet money on sunshine today
last night. It rained. Again. We really don't need this rain stuff. Okay, once,
just so we can know what it's like, be able to say, "Rain, oh, yeah, I've seen that.
Let the farmers have it." But it's been raining for DAYS. Too much, you know?
But today, the sun is shining.
And on this sunshiny day, we have Dark Toads avoiding Overlords, when I would
have expected them to avoid bright sunlight instead. Unless they're desert toads.
Khora the Small was most challenged.
We had twenty fights, fewer than last time, and there were three standbys out
there, as well. This is getting bad, folks. They could close us down for lack of
interest!
There were ten challenge matches, which is a good precentage even if the number
itself is pathetic. We take what we can get here in Lirin Kiv.
The longest fight was four minutes. Somebody wasn't really trying. Have we no
total parries here?
Nightfall, Deanjli tells me that it was not a case of her being "asleep at the
switch" last time. She says that whether she was coming down with the flu, or burned
out with being champion, or for any other subsidiary reason, you won that fair and
square, and as long as you keep writing a column, she'll be well pleased.
Definitely do not give Khora a chance at the Horn!
And now, for lack of anything better to do, or at least anything more to the
point, here are the fights--
DARLINA (74-2995) (27-19-2,75) of SAND DANCERS fought R.O.U.S. (107-4) (0-0-
0,50) of Old Favorites. DARLINA devastated R.O.U.S. in a 1 minute one-sided bout.
Everyone likes devastating rats, or seeing rats devastated, for that matter. It's
some kind of basic instinct.
MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (23-14-1,89) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought DAMORETH STENN
(65-6105) (35-31-0,89) of SAND DANCERS. MIDNIGHT FAITH was overpowered by DAMORETH
STENN in a 1 minute mismatched conflict. It looks like Damoreth Stenn's losing
record is receding farther and farther into the realm of "might have been."
ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (41-80-3,146) of THE DRAGON FIST fought EVIL INPUTTER (107-
7) (0-0-0,110) of Old Favorites. ZALMARDARIN overpowered EVIL INPUTTER in a 1 minute
one-sided bout. This is all well and good, but did Zalmardarin provide us with a
replacement? If the Evil Inputter isn't doing the input, who IS? Maybe there's a
Good Inputter who needs to be rescued and restored to her position. Anybody think of
that?
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (23-8-2,135) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought TORYN TYL DAGEDA
(74-2777) (57-54-4,109) of SAND DANCERS. TOM RIDDLE devastated TORYN TYL DAGEDA in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. This Riddle fellow is really racking up the
wins, isn't he? Good cess to him.
BAT (74-2742) (67-72-1,194) of DARKLINGS fought SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513) (63-59-
3,174) of THE DRAGON FIST. BAT vanquished SMOLDER DARKSUN in a crowd pleasing 1
minute bloody one-sided fray. I guess you could say that Bat sort of "put the
smoldering fire out," eh?
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (57-88-1,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought JAMMIES (74-2829)
(58-53-1,177) of DARKLINGS. KYRLANIA defeated JAMMIES in a popular 1 minute bloody
duel. Ah, Jammies, hard luck.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (48-69-0,182) of THE DRAGON FIST fought TELGOR (107-27)
(0-0-0,200) of Old Favorites. CORT NIGHTJEWEL was beaten by TELGOR in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute conflict. This is something you don't see very often, and I've
heard that Telgor is standing everybody a round of drinks at the Red Sands.
CYLADIA (51-1122) (90-101-0,194) of SKAITHVARN fought TEMPUS (31-538) (33-34-
0,162) of THE STORMGUARDS. CYLADIA slimly lost to TEMPUS in an exciting 2 minute
bloody battle. Perfectly natural, because Cyladia IS slim, so how else could she
lose?
DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862) (79-65-3,208) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought DEANJLI TYL
RHU (76-1970) (83-57-0,190) of SAND DANCERS. DARKMOON BLACKFELL was demolished by
DEANJLI TYL RHU in a 3 minute mismatched match. You know, as I look at this
extremely gung-ho Sand Dancer, I wonder about Simtakka, the arena where she trained.
We've had another Sand Dancer out of Simtakka who acted just like this, Miha-Tahali,
now in Primus. Do you suppose it's something in the water?
DEADBOLT (70-1664) (71-93-2,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought ZALGOR PRIGG (82-
15204) (24-12-0,190) of MUTANT LEAGUE II. DEADBOLT beat ZALGOR PRIGG in a popular 4
minute gory melee. Our longest fight, such as it is. And from the fight experience
showing, there's no wonder it turned out the way it did.
The challenge matches--
DISORDER (65-6419) (20-10-1,70) of PARANOIA challenged WAIS (65-6447) (15-17-
0,53) of DARK TOADS. Down 17. DISORDER vanquished WAIS in a popular 1 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. Dangerous to go around with a jewel in your head, isn't it,
Wais? Just no TELLING who might come after it.
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (19-13-2,47) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE challenged TIRYA (46-
3594) (22-34-0,65) of SAND DANCERS. Up 18. VINCENT CRABBE was viciously subdued by
TIRYA in a 3 minute Challenge duel. And how many of you bet on Tirya to lose? I
admit, I did. She seems so good at it....
FLIGHT (75-2606) (23-14-3,100) of PARANOID ASYLUM challenged KING LOVE (40-3748)
(20-17-2,97) of SUNNYLAND. Up 3. FLIGHT overpowered KING LOVE in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge melee. There's some deep symbolism in this, but I can't seem to get a grip
on it. So you're going to have to work it out for yourselves. Sorry.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (32-29-1,175) of DARK TOADS challenged TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (62-
72-0,187) of SAND DANCERS. Up 12. SHYLOCK was luckily beaten by TAIRIKIA in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute Challenge brawl. Was it luck, or was the announcer being
insulting? Shylock and Tairikia, give us your opinions on this in the next
newsletter.
SEMIRHAGE (74-1712) (34-38-2,157) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL challenged THE QUICKLING
(70-1669) (45-112-2,170) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 13. SEMIRHAGE was vanquished by THE
QUICKLING in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Amazing, it was even quick.
Somehow I don't expect a dinosaur to be quick.
WINSTON (75-2600) (41-19-0,195) of DARK TOADS challenged INIGO MONTOYA (74-1611)
(44-47-4,203) of ROOT OF ALL EVIL. Up 8. WINSTON luckily beat INIGO MONTOYA in a
crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge match. Winston, was it luck, or do you have some
special secret to your success?
*LEATHER* (65-3336) (29-21-3,199) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES challenged TALON
WARSMITH (99-101) (58-86-8,216) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 17. *LEATHER* was viciously
subdued by TALON WARSMITH in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. Ooooh, vicious! It must be
the Bloodgames effect.
BRAND (82-13289) (16-14-1,196) of TOADS OF AMBER III challenged NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (60-78-0,200) of DARKLINGS. Up 4. BRAND was overcome by NIGHTCAP in a popular
2 minute Challenge match. And this despite the fact that Brand is NOT a toad. Oh,
well, we all have days like that.
FENGAR II (20-61) (106-79-2,202) of OVERLORDS challenged KHORA THE SMALL (78-
519) (105-132-3,249) of SAND DANCERS. Up 37. FENGAR II bested KHORA THE SMALL in an
exciting 1 minute Challenge duel. Fengar, our thanks. This should help to prevent
Khora from getting a shot at the Horn, a goal favored by many.
And with more guts than sense: TREMERE (9-4915) (32-4-0,231) of DARK TOADS
challenged NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (86-89-3,281) of DARKLINGS. Up 50. TREMERE was
bested by NIGHTFALL in a 1 minute Challenge Title fight. A good try, Tremere, and we
note that the announcer didn't think it was "uneven," but Nightfall did such a good
column that we want to hang on to her for a while.

MONGO'S MARDI GRAS MADNESS DUELMASTERS AUCTION
Mongo, aka Matt McIntosh and ex-Warden of the Dark Circle, is auctioning off his
entire collection of Duelmasters warriors and stables. Don't miss out on this chance
to own some fantastic warriors! There are ADM warriors available in every class from
Primus to Freshmen, as well as over a dozen Basic stables.
Does a Slasher with +4 attack, +4 decisiveness, +3 initiative and +2 riposte
sound good? How about a Lunger who received the benefit of a TC prize, has TVed
three times after graduating--and still hasn't maxed out his skills!? How about a
Striker in the Freshmen class who has decisiveness for a favorite learn and the MAUL
for a favorite weapon!?
Or perhaps you prefer playing in Basic. Then how does a stable with four Adept
class warriors who have a combined record of 41-19-9 sound? Or maybe a stable with
three 21-Will warriors? Or perhaps a stable with four Initiates and a Rookie who
have a combined record of 23-6-1?
The quality of the lots is excellent. All you need to view and bid on the lots
is go to:
http://members.aol.com/jvmerlino/mardigras.html
If you want to be on the mailing list to receive regular updates on the auction,
just send an e-mail to JVMerlino@aol.com. Merlin, aka John Merlino and also an ex-
Warden of the Dark Circle, will be running this auction for me. I just moved to New
Orleans and am likely currently stumbling around the French Quarter...because it's
Mardi Gras! So I have named my auction in honor of this occasion.
The auction will start on Saturday, March 13th, 2004, and will continue for
several weeks. But you should get your bids in early if you want your best chance at
owning any of these fantastic warriors and stables.
Many thanks to all for your interest and your bids,
Mongo

Style Masters Symposium
Hosted by Hammer
The years have slipped by and many DM Managers have come and gone since the last
Hammer's Handbook was compiled and printed.
There is now a stirring within me to begin writing and editing yet another
Handbook with a distribution date sometime in 2005.
This Handbook will be made available via Email with a possibility of burning the
info to a CD for distribution.
Special arrangements will be made to provide the information via printed page to
those contributors who are serving sentences behind bars.
The working title of this new Handbook is "Style Masters Symposium Hosted by
Hammer".
Distribution of this Handbook is projected to be MAINLY for those DM Managers
who contribute information/articles to Hammer by June 2004.
Informative and entertaining articles should focus on insights regarding Any or
All 10 Style Masters for both the Basic and ADM arenas as well as Tourney
competition.
Articles focusing on Weapons/Armor are also encouraged for inclusion.
