"Look at it," Tairikia said grimly. "No sun today, just like the Omens
predicted." She glared out at the lake as if the water was responsible. As a
Rirorni, she distrusted large bodies of water anyway, and this Lake of Mists, or
whatever they called it, was uncanny beyond that.
"Of course there's no sun, Tai," Wais snapped. "It's RAINING, in case you
hadn't noticed." She flipped water off the edge of her cape.
"It's raining UNSEASONABLY," Tairikia insisted. "That's just wrong, you know it
is."
The two Rirorni women stared at each other in silence for a long moment, then
resumed their slow stroll along the top of the lakeside bluff. It wasn't much of a
height, the path was only four feet above the narrow beach, but on a clear day, it
allowed them to see all the way to a shore. Maybe not THE shore, because that was
one of the peculiarities of the lake, but at least SOME shore, some land beyond the
Isle.
Finally Wais sighed. "Okay, so it's a little unusual for it to rain this much
at this time of year. That doesn't mean it's an omen of doom." She glanced upward
and gestured at the clouds, where a brighter spot indicated the position of the sun.
"You see, there's still--"
The sun disk vanished. All was darkness around them, lit only by the distant
lamps along Lirin Kiv's Water Street. Both gladiators stopped walking; it would be
too easy to step over the edge of the little bluff and fall to the beach. Or to the
water, and the tide was coming in--
"WHAT tide?" Wais demanded, shaken. Where had that thought come from?
Tairikia grabbed her arm. "Look!" she whispered. "There's something OUT
there!"
There was light over the lake, not at the water's surface, but above it, as
though a shining bird flew through the rain. But it wasn't a bird's movement, it
spiraled, twisted, drifted off at random angles and wobbled back. A bird that was
fighting strong winds might fly so. It came closer, resolving into a writhing web of
bright lines.
"Not a bird, but a bird CAGE," Wais murmured.
"And there's something IN it," Tairikia responded. "Monsters!"
The cage of light plunged downward and struck the lake, landing half in the
water and half on the gravelly shore a hundred yards beyond the two gladiators. The
lights shimmered and winked out. They could hear someone cursing.
"That's Shylock!" Wais exclaimed. She began to edge along the path toward them,
feeling for the pavement with every step lest she stray too far and fall over the
side.
"If that's Shylock," Tairikia said, following, "then maybe he'll know how to get
the sun back."

Near Fratsfa:
Gladiators sailed up the river from Kati-Tei through Andor, Fratsfa, and Zensu
to the Isle of the Eye. Some came as tourists, some as newly-graduated warriors,
some to attend and participate in the Spring Tourney. This was a steady source of
income for boatmen, and many of them made the trip two or three times a month; the
river and its shores were well known to them.
"I don't remember a castle on that hill," one sailor muttered, squinting at the
shore. "And I was along here just last week...."
"There was no castle there," Lady Fern, manager of the Flower Girls in Fratsfa
confirmed. "And a week is certainly not long enough to build one!"
"There was one...eight hundred years ago," a voice murmured behind her.
The statuesque manager glanced back at her gladiatress, Nasty Nasturtium. The
woman was an Araoi, and elf of the purest blood, and Lady Fern supposed it was
possible that Nasturtium actually REMEMBERED a castle there, but she hoped not. The
thought of having a warrior that old was unsettling. "You're sure, Nasty?"
The elfin blonde nodded firmly. "Yes, my mother told me about it--one of her
brothers helped to bring the castle down. The Castle of Storms, that was its name, a
place of the darkest arts. It was the stronghold of Prince Illrienherthinil
Silverthorn, who was called the Ill Rain."
Lady Fern glanced at the sky automatically. It WAS getting cloudy, but that
was, must be, coincidence. After all, changeable weather was common at this time of
year.
"That wasn't on Khaldren's list." The short, stocky man removed his bowler and
extended a hand to Lady Fern. "Raoul, Lord Protector In Gerfel We Trust."
"Kennelworth has spoken of you," Lady Fern admitted. "But what do you know of
this Castle of Storms?"
"Not a thing, doll. But I'm wondering if Khaldren's magic isn't raising more
ruins than he planned on--anyplace with enough of the wrong kind of magic
concentrated in it."
"This Khaldren is...?" Nasturtium asked.
"A wizard who escaped the sinking of Krael," Raoul explained. "He wants to
bring Krael forward in time, or back from the dead, or something. And other places
he knows about from that era."
"That would take a great magic," Nasturtium protested. "With the Arcanum in the
current low state, it should not be possible."
"Adie in Aruak City says he could be using blood magic based on the arena
deaths, doll. She seems to think that'd do it for him."
The elf recoiled. "It would!" she whispered, "and that would call to all sites
where dark magic has sunk deep. This must be stopped!"
"Well, I'm taking the warning to Lady Sheila--"
"She can do nothing, even if she would," Nasturtium snapped. "She dares not
touch blood magic, even to fight it, except in the most indirect fashion, and
indirection will not serve! Not soon enough, anyway."
"Adie will think of some way to fight Khaldren," Raoul said, a little uneasily.
He took a deep breath and put his hat back on. "And until he's stopped, we will
fight everything he brings up from the past."
"If we have to fight the Ill Rain," Nasty Nasturtium predicted, "it won't be
easy."
Valamantis:
Lord Protector Ka D'Argo, on a brief trip to his home on Kolact, had planned to
take ship at Valamantis. But the port city was not as he had expected. There was
always bustle, but now...it reminded him of a disturbed anthill. And where had those
towers on the landward side come from? They weren't something that could have been
built in a day, or even a year, and he'd been through here four months ago.
"It's Old Valamantis," Arenamistress Sitalva said grimly. "We've had word of
some kind of magic afoot aimed at ruined cities, and with all the blood spilled in
the recent Bloodgames, it would have been more surprising if something had NOT
happened there. But understanding why doesn't help us now. The oldest levels of Old
Valamantis," she said grimly, "were Folstrom. NOBODY wants to see the Folstrom loose
in the world again."
"Bringing the ruins back is one thing," the tall gladiator argued, "but the
people...? Surely Ahringol won't release their souls because of a spell and some
blood."
Sitalva watched the slight wavering of the resurrected towers and shivered,
though the day was already warm. "We'll find out, when the city stabilizes. The
Silver Mage says sometime in the next week and a half or two weeks. But we can see
people moving around in there. And even if they're zombies, it isn't going to be
good."
Iaye:
The fishing boats that had fled Iaye when the earthquakes began crept back one
by one as the Trier grew calm again. Most of them followed the coast down toward
Point, not because they needed the guidance but to see for themselves if drowned
Krael had truly risen from the waves.
It had.
Lord Protector Goff, assistant manager of the Red Dog Gang, stood on the gently
rocking deck of his boat and stared through a spyglass at the rampart of buildings
that blocked what had been the strait between Iaye and Point. He wasn't sure what he
had expected, but not this.
Krael stood above the water, but not as it must once have looked. Many of the
taller buildings showed broken tops, and all was slimed with mud and weed. Here and
there, decaying wrecks lay in the streets or even on the roofs of houses. The smell
of dead fish was obvious even from a mile away. Krael LOOKED like a city that had
spent centuries under water. The people who moved among those ruins didn't. There
weren't enough of them to represent the entire population of the city at the time of
its disaster, he guessed at no more than two hundred. But they looked...normal.
Alive. And their activity--they seemed to be trying to clear one section of the city
of its mud and debris--were just what you'd expect.
And they seemed to take the whole situation for granted. They must KNOW, from
the state of Krael now, what had happened, but they just calmly went about cleaning
up.
That was the most unnerving thing of all.
Xochithlan:
There were no ruins around Xochithlan to rise up at the wizard's call, because
the modern city was the old city, continuously lived in for longer than most
Alastarian cities had existed. There was, perhaps, a tendency for certain long-
buried residents to stir in their graves, but if any came out to walk the streets, it
was not immediately obvious.
What was obvious was the forest.
There had been a forest around Xochithlan for a long time, but it had been
burned away during the Rirorni War. Replanting efforts had been ongoing for the last
eight years, but eight years is not long enough to bring back a major forest. And
what surrounded the city now, pressing in against the walls and disturbing the newer
suburbs, was a major forest.
Not, however, a forest such as the Xochithlani remembered.
This was a Forest Primeval.
This was a forest that might hide...anything.
And according to the scholars of ancient texts consulted by King Feyen of
Xochithlan, it probably did.
Zuwayza:
Zuwayza was as old as Xochithlan, and there were as many dark secrets buried
under its streets. The foundation of the city, Vekhirn knew, went back to the days
before the first humans. There were Folstrom traces, but there was also something
older. Maybe more than one something. And they were all stirring. Too much blood
had been spilled here, especially in the years since the invasion--during the
invasion itself, and in the slow beating back of the Eastern forces.
And in other ways, or for other causes, as well. The court wizard had sensed a
new feeling in the people of the old city. Harder. Crueler, perhaps. Less patient,
less tolerant--and the Glorious Empire had never been noted for tolerance. The woman
Jayde, who claimed to be the daughter of Kjarran, her death and her mysterious
apotheosis, had that been the start of this dark bitterness that gripped the people?
He shrugged that off. Whatever the cause for the change of heart, blood had been
spilled. And somewhere, someone had called on spilled blood to raise old evils, and
spilled blood everywhere had answered.
Aruak City:
Adeolar stared into the gilt-framed mirror, frowning and twisting a lock of hair
between nervous fingers. Nothing she was Seeing was good. Not that the mirror was
the best way to See, but it was the only scrying device she had that was still
working. There was a bloody film over the glass that could not be washed off, and
that, she suspected, was a sign of just how bad things were. Blood magic, used to
excess, tainted everything. There was no doubt that the wizard in Zorpunt was strong
and ruthless, but what he had started seemed to be taking on a life of its own. And
no one, so far, seemed able to stop him.
She would have to take steps herself.

Dal Shang:
From the top tier of the arena, you could see a long way out to sea, because the
arena was built on a cliff above the harbor. So was a lot of the rest of Dal Shang,
but except for the governor's palace, it mostly wasn't as high as the arena.
Lord Protector Wais, who had come home to Dal Shang in a vague effort to boost
that beleaguered arena, was sitting on the top tier brooding. The arena was
shrinking faster than a pool of water in the desert. Promising warriors who were
looking for a career in the arena were not looking in THIS arena. Fourteen active
warriors last time, and two of them had been retiring by way of a Dark Arena
appearance. His own team, even, had gone inactive! Something had to be done, but he
had no idea what. Even the fans had deserted Dal Shang arena.
With a sigh, he turned away from the empty arena to look out to sea. And so he
saw the waters of the lake heave as though they were boiling, and a new--or very
old--island rise like a black reef no more than five miles off shore. Five miles is
too far away to see the details, but there was something disturbingly regular about
the broken ridgeline of that island. Like buildings....
A note for the people of the Free Cities and Lirith Kai:
Some people say that if you get rid of magic, the world will be much simpler.
Some people say that the destabilization of the Arcanum will get rid of magic. Ha!
High Magic, the stuff that highly educated wizards do, falters as the Arcanum
weakens. But there are other kinds of magic. Older. Cruder. Less vulnerable.
There's Blood Magic. Spilling blood releases power. The more blood, the more power.
And a very powerful wizard of several centuries ago, Khaldren of Krael, who
decided that he didn't want to die when the city around him was dying, has come to
the present. He's made a spell to bring Krael back from ruins, and he's tied it to
Blood Magic.
But there's more blood being spilled around Alastari than he realized, and a lot
of Lost Cities that want to live again. If you have some old ruins near your house,
and there's an arena where people are bleeding and dying, you've got trouble coming.
This is now your story, too.
It's all a plot, and probably a dark one. Where is Daylight Savings time when
you need it?

Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
I've got a lot to say, but I'm not sure just what yet, so later for that. In
the mean time, I've got to do something about the Omen. It should be ME involved in
that. As the Champion of the Horn, I'm a natural for desperate adventures, everyone
knows that. And no, this is NOT a case of swelled head! The very idea! It's
just... what's the point of me being so highly trained and skilled if I don't USE it
for the greater good?

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
It's raining. I don't get it, this is SPRING, it's supposed to be DUST STORMS
here, not rain! I wasn't READY for rain. Besides, it's cold.
And getting the cold shoulder were the Scarlet Knights, most avoided by Dark
Toads. Is this product of some kind of inside tip about the Omens? Do Scarlet
Knights herald blood to be spilled? Not that spilled blood is anything new here, but
still, we like to keep it within reasonable bounds. Such as, inside the arena.
And speaking of the inside of the arena, we had twenty-one fights in the arena
today, but three involved standby fighters. Which means three dozen sorta-real
fighters active today. Not as many as I'd like to see here, not as many as we've had
from time to time, but there it is. Thirty-six. Piffling. (Of course, I think it
may well have been worse once or twice, but we won't think about that.)
Of those twenty-one fights, seven were challenge matches. Vincent Crabbe got
the most challenges, probably two. One warrior had and used a TV challenge.
And speaking of TV, the longest fight wasn't long enough for a proper commercial
break. Four minutes? Surely you can do better than that! The guy from Short-Tree's
Old Reliable Pre-Tested Weapons was just getting up to give his spiel (I have no idea
who let him in, he usually hangs out up in Talahya) when the fight ended! Our thanks
to Bat for that timely conclusion.
Nobody died, which is good. Dying in the rain is the pits, even when you don't
have to get buried in standing water afterward. Besides, I hear that everyone in the
Infirmary has cold, wet hands today. Brrrr!
So, fights. And no, don't ask me why people are fighting here on this rotten,
miserable, rainy, cold day, because I have no clue. I'd rather stay home by a
roaring fire with something furry to cuddle.
WAIS (65-6447) (15-19-0,46) of DARK TOADS fought DISORDER (65-6419) (21-11-1,72)
of PARANOIA. WAIS was devastated by DISORDER in a popular 1 minute one-sided bout.
Is this an Omen? Will Wais be plunged into some kind of confusion and disorder next
time? Tune in two weeks from now to see!
MICKEY HATCHER (74-3356) (21-6-0,75) of 1988 DODGERS fought CAPTURED PIRATE KING
(107-2) (0-0-0,30) of Miscellaneous Fans. MICKEY HATCHER overpowered CAPTURED PIRATE
KING in a 1 minute uneven fray. But was this before, or after the Captured Pirate
King offered to help retrieve Shylock from his wrecked ship of light, or whatever it
was? If it was BEFORE... well, you gotta wonder what happens, hmm?
NATHANIEL (75-2764) (18-10-0,64) of DARK TOADS fought DARLINA (74-2995) (28-20-
2,77) of SAND DANCERS. NATHANIEL overpowered DARLINA in an exciting 1 minute uneven
fight. Nat, who assures us that he is NOT one of the jewel-in-the-head Dark Toads,
is such a helpful guy. You can tell. "Darlina has a winning record," I said,
stunned and distressed. So Nat is helping whittle that record down. Good work!
THOMAS (82-14150) (2-5-0,29) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II fought GISELLA (74-2704)
(16-5-0,53) of CHEYSULI & LIR. THOMAS savagely defeated GISELLA in a crowd pleasing
2 minute bloody conflict. Foregn toads! Whatever next, eh? Gisella, tell us a
little about yourself and your opponent, so as to, ahem, make it easier to suck you
into who-knows-what with the Omen and all. Or, alternatively, Thomas, tell us! I'm
an equal-oportunity reporter.
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (57-56-4,124) of SAND DANCERS fought ZORRO, THE GAY
BLADE (107-8) (0-0-0,110) of Miscellaneous Fans. TORYN TYL DAGEDA beat ZORRO, THE
GAY BLADE in an exciting 3 minute bout. I blame it on his clothes. There's
something about all that satin, and the magenta boa, that just BEGS to be shredded.
The problem with Zorro is that he's got rotten taste.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (46-113-2,173) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought DAMORETH STENN
(65-6105) (37-31-0,102) of SAND DANCERS. THE QUICKLING overpowered DAMORETH STENN in
a 1 minute one-sided bout. This must be a relief to Damoreth, as it finally ended
his puzzling winning streak.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (48-71-0,183) of THE DRAGON FIST fought *LEATHER* (65-
3336) (30-22-3,202) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES. CORT NIGHTJEWEL was devastated by
*LEATHER* in a 1 minute mismatched brawl. Is this devastation of the jewel of the
night more of the Omen? Or just the natural devastation of earthquakes everywhere?
CYLADIA (51-1122) (91-102-0,199) of SKAITHVARN fought ZALGOR PRIGG (82-15204)
(24-14-0,171) of MUTANT LEAGUE II. CYLADIA was devastated by ZALGOR PRIGG in an
exciting 1 minute uneven duel. Rumor has it that Cyladia would have done better if
she hadn't been focused on protecting her admittedly gorgeous raiment. Never wear
gorgeous raiment into the arena. It can be a handicap. Of course, it can also be an
inspiration, as in fighting harder to protect it.
WINSTON (75-2600) (43-19-0,209) of DARK TOADS fought IMPRISONED SPY (107-9) (0-
0-0,170) of Miscellaneous Fans. WINSTON unbelievably bested IMPRISONED SPY in an
action packed 2 minute gory fight. What's not to believe? The spy was imprisoned in
a very small cell, no room to exercise, all that stuff, noo wonder he lost. Not that
I want to diminish Winston's victory, but still, what's not to believe in this?
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (87-90-3,203) of DARKLINGS fought TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (25-
8-2,156) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. NIGHTFALL devastated TOM RIDDLE in a 1 minute
mismatched bout. I could make a lot of plays on words here, like "night falls on Tom
Riddle," and so on, but you can see them just as well as I can, right? Take it as
read.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (59-54-1,191) of DARKLINGS fought KHORA THE SMALL (78-519)
(105-134-3,196) of SAND DANCERS. JAMMIES handily defeated KHORA THE SMALL in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided contest. A very distressing event from Khora's point of
view, but what was she doing being so easy? If she had lost her Top Basher's honors
because of this, she would have deserved every anguished instant of it.
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (61-79-0,202) of DARKLINGS fought TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (64-72-
0,193) of SAND DANCERS. NIGHTCAP was overpowered by TAIRIKIA in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided match. Check your water bottle, Nightcap. There may be something
in there other than water. Oh, and don't wear the knitted cap under your helmet,
because it seems prone to falling down over your eyes.
BAT (74-2742) (69-72-1,207) of DARKLINGS fought KYRLANIA (70-2327) (58-89-1,194)
of SCARLET KNIGHTS. BAT beat KYRLANIA in a popular 4 minute melee. And this
carnivorous mouse with wings pulls off the longest fight of the day. Well, Kyrlania
probably had something to do with it....
Ah, the challenge matches, beginning with our Most Challenged warrior... who is
fighting on his OWN challenge, but that's the way it goes some days. VINCENT CRABBE
(74-3498) (20-14-2,57) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE challenged TIRYA (46-3594) (24-34-0,77) of
SAND DANCERS. Up 20. VINCENT CRABBE won victory over TIRYA in a popular 2 minute
Challenge duel. I blame Tirya's time in Ardivent (not to slight Vincent, of course).
There's something in the water there, and it CHANGED her.
MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (24-15-1,91) of PARANOID ASYLUM challenged ZALMARDARIN
(78-312) (42-81-3,138) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 47. MIDNIGHT FAITH was handily
defeated by ZALMARDARIN in a 1 minute Challenge fight. Oh, ouch! I think
Zalmardarin is our other basher, and it is obvious that on this occasion, a maul is
stronger than faith.
FLIGHT (75-2606) (25-14-3,142) of PARANOID ASYLUM challenged KING LOVE (40-3748)
(21-18-2,104) of SUNNYLAND. Down 38. FLIGHT overpowered KING LOVE in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge struggle. Some people fear love. To love is to be vulnerable.
To be vulnerable is to attract enemies.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (32-31-1,173) of DARK TOADS challenged SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-
513) (64-60-3,171) of THE DRAGON FIST. Down 2. SHYLOCK overpowered SMOLDER DARKSUN
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. This may be part of the Omen, and if so,
it's a more encouraging part than I've seen so far.
TREMERE (9-4915) (32-6-0,195) of DARK TOADS challenged DEADBOLT (70-1664) (72-
94-2,204) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 9. TREMERE overpowered DEADBOLT in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute mismatched Challenge duel. Is there truth to the rumor that
Deadbolt is dead from the neck up>
FENGAR II (20-61) (108-79-2,214) of OVERLORDS challenged DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-
862) (80-66-3,217) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 3. FENGAR II demolished DARKMOON
BLACKFELL in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Ah, more Good Omens, yes? We can
hope so.
AMPLITUR (65-6440) (18-5-1,130) of DARK TOADS TV challenged TEMPUS (31-538) (34-
35-0,170) of THE STORMGUARDS. Up 40, and a TV challenge, at that. AMPLITUR
devastated TEMPUS in an action packed 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Now, let
me get this straight, as a Dalshani Toad, Amplitur is one who DOES have a jewel in
his head, right? Because this might be Significant when it comes time to calculating
Omens. You never know what kind of things will go into such calculations.
And for the Horn, a random match: DEANJLI TYL RHU (76-1970) (85-57-0,223) of
SAND DANCERS fought TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (60-86-8,236) of SCARLET KNIGHTS.
DEANJLI TYL RHU won victory over TALON WARSMITH in a popular 2 minute gory Title
duel. Did Talon even notice? "Won victory" doesn't sound POINTED enough to distract
him from the contemplation of whatever it is Dwarves contemplate. Congratulations to
Deanjli, and you'd better do a more substantial column next time!

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I am not sure where my personal ads from last turn disappeared to. I was
positive I wrote them. Ah well. -- TigToad
A dog ate them?
All -- My squad will be seeing a temporary increase in size this turn as I time for
the tourney. Several of the warriors will only be active this turn, but I expect
Amplitur to return full time after this tourney as he starts to prepare for
Eligables. Unfortunately, Jon Snow and Brand are both retired from arena play for
the time being. -- TigToad
Vincent Crabbe -- Oh, I see. Is that the way it is.... -- Wais
Darkmoon Blackfell -- You took a nice beating and deserved the victory! -- Tremere
A "nice" beating?
Nightfall -- Helmet? Why on Earth would I wear a helmet? Do you have any idea what
those smelly, stinky things do to my hair? -- Tremere
Tairikia -- You realize I am 4 and 13 since TigToad took my weapon away? Thank you
for your complaint, it got him to hand me a weapon for a while. I am SOOO grateful.
-- Shylock
P.S. Those arm parries HURT!
Deadbolt -- Wow, did you know that these weapon things can swing and do damage? I
certainly didn't! Hopefully, now that I have made this realization it will be a
recurring trend in my career. -- Winston
Larkin -- Where is that spymaster Zoris Karloff at these days? I might have
misspelled his name, but he was a pretty funny guy. Maybe you can drag him over here
for a turn and see what "colorful" comments he might make of our glorious arena. --
The Icelord
Ah... that would be Koris Zarloff, I suppose. He mostly bedevil's Debby Tonte,
but maybe I can get him to step in when I go on vacation. Of course, as far as
he's concerned, only Karnhorns are worth praising....
Cyladia -- It's worth a try. -- Tempus
Khora the Small -- I wouldn't want to do that. -- Fengar II
Deanjli Tyl Rhu -- Congrats on taking the title. I want it though. -- Fengar II
Flight -- Nice challenge. I continue my downward slide with no quick end in sight.
Maybe it's time to think of a new career.... -- Semirhage
Larkin -- With only 4 arenas compared to the 16+ arenas the others draw from it will
continue to stay small here. If merging with Free Blades reset the team record back
to 0-0 I might not be too upset. :) Are previously graduated warriors from other
advanced arenas allowed to move here? -- Bremen
I don't think merging would reset your record, but you CAN move grads from other
regions into Lirin Kiv. Without having to move the team, too. It's the new
immigration policy.
Fengar II -- Ptui. -- Nightcap, fed up with gladiating
Larkin -- I do drink before my fights: water. The liquor comes after, if at all.
Lots of times I'm too depressed to drink. -- Nightcap
And then you get dehydrated, right?
Deanjli tyl Rhu -- What happened? I was winning, wasn't I? -- Nightfall, thankful to
continue not being Champion of the Horn
P.S. But hey! I'm still only Eligible!
P.P.S. Someone was asleep at the reins, eh?
Cort Nightjewel -- Thanks for the win. Didn't think my weapon was too hot against
yours, but I guess it's quicker. Snake-like in fact. -- Bat, smug
Larkin -- The bat from which I've taken my arena name may be a mouse with wings, but
it's a carnivorous mouse with wings. I can so be brutal if I put my mind to it. --
Bat
Ah. Okay, I'll remember that.
Tempus -- You may wonder why I stooped to clean my weapon. I wasn't exactly cleaning
it; I was checking the depth of the sand. You know, instead of hauling out the
bloodstained sand they just dump more sand on top of it. It's getting pretty deep.
Sometimes I worry about sinking in, that's why I don't wear armor. And if it keeps
raining I'm going to skip next turn, because I worry about quicksand. -- Jammies
Of COURSE we haul out the bloodstained sand! Whatever were you thinking? Do
you know badly bloodstained sand stinks after lying around in the sun for a few
days? Ripe, very ripe.
Zalgor Prigg -- I'm sure that epiphany of coordination you had will help you in your
next fight. I wish you well as long as you don't get matched against me again. --
Cyladia
Shylock -- We meet yet again. But I have to tell you that, other things being equal,
open hand is at a disadvantage to cold steel. -- Tairikia
P.S. Look at it, you surrendered because you "sustained serious wounds," and the
only wounds you got were from being "struck in the army by the parry."
He noticed.
Midnight Faith -- Obviously, my morning doubts put me at a disadvantage. No surprise
there, but...oh, well. -- Darlina
Talon Warsmith -- You damned dwarves have no respect. -- Khora the Small
Smolder Darksun -- My people have always believed that the Ratani are not to be
trusted. Obviously, they are correct! -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Ah, I see what the Captured Pirate King's problem is. He's too short. Successful
pirate kings have to be TALL. -- Damoreth Stenn
Dumb rats. -- Tirya
Zalgor -- Right, what Larkin said. I have lost the Top Basher's honors before by
losing to impertinent, non-bashing ruffians when the other basher won against some
random wimp. -- Khora the Small but Determined

St. Valentine's Day Massacre Update
We are pleased to announce that the kLk sponsored St. Valentine's Day Massacre
kill contest in DM 36 is off to a great start. We are also pleased to announce that
in addition to the 10 team rollups we are also able to offer the renaming of a dark
arena warrior as a prize to the manager with the most kills. The contest is only 2
turns old and is still wide open. There are currently 5 managers tied with one kill
each. Anything can still happen so hurry up and get into the arena.
On a personal note, no other alliances have entered the arena in force to
challenge the kLk dominance. We were expecting The Firm to put up a fight for their
supposed home arena. But, they were a no show. Guess they proved what they are
really made of. *evil grin*
Perhaps another alliance would like to step in to give us a challenge. We are
throwing down the gauntlet. Perhaps the Chaos Inc. boys I keep hearing about would
like to step in and challenge the kLk for arena dominance. If you don't show up,
Chaos, don't feel bad. FAR better managers than you have been invited into Jhans but
have chosen to pass on the offer.
So if you consider yourself worthy to compete, like fierce competition, and
enjoy arenas where the personals are as fierce as the fighting, come visit JHANS DM
36. We're already planning our next contest, "Capture the Flag," and have a
storyline being actively worked on in the arena. Whatever you like about DM you can
find it in JHANS.

Has anyone seen it in print that the "Goat" is leaving the "Cartel"? There were
some diplos to the effect of a special branch of the Cartel being formed, like secret
societies, governmental agencies and alliances certain agendas are developed. To
obtain the desired effect of any agenda only key personnel can be used. The "Goat"
is "Cartel" so until you see it with me announcing that I am not Cartel, remember,
"The Agenda of the Core is for you to fight for." I hope this stops the confusion.
