WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
The seasons touched only lightly on the Isle. No blizzards, no heat waves. But
some things got through, more now than used to. So "they" said. More fog now, and
more storms.
Khora turned away from the rain-blinded windows, shrugging. "People always say
things like that. The past was always golden, the present is always decadent." She
sighed. "They don't begin to understand what decadent really is...."
Her companion, Thomas of Krondur, hid a smile by looking down into his goblet of
mulled wine. He was sure that Khora, who had been a famous courtesan before becoming
a gladiator--something about a dead man, and a choice between the arena and the
headsman's block, he had heard--had her own highly entertaining ideas of what
"decadent" meant. He wouldn't be averse to finding out. Peeled grapes? Fountains
of wine? No, something more... exciting. Orgies, at least. He had never
experienced an orgy. It was a gap in his education that he was willing to mend.
"There are only two things to talk about here," he said. "The fights and the
weather. Neither seems to have much variety, but I'll take the weather and the Good
Old Days over another rehashing of the same old fights with the same old opponents.
And so would you."
"Oh... we could talk about the hot new 'don't mention it' topic," she said.
"The Greywand and her latest... eccentricities."
Thomas shivered. "Let's not."
Khora raised an eyebrow. "I thought golems were created without fear."
"But not without caution."
"Caution." Her tone was scornful, not quite a sneer. "I have never been a fan
of caution." Her hands moved through a complex pattern.
Thomas winced. It was amazing what a trained dancer could say with just her
hands. If she put her opinion of Sheila Greywand's sanity into words, she could get
both of them into trouble. Or worse. People did sometimes vanish on the Isle, even
Lord Protectors. No one asked questions, not after the first questioners also
disappeared. It wasn't safe.
Khora took a chair facing him across the hearth and they sat quietly for some
time, listening to the storm. Then she sighed. "The storm is worse than any I've
experienced here," she said. "And I've been on the Isle for several years."
Thomas nodded. He had not been designed to perform acts of magic, but he had
the sensors to detect them. This storm was not magical. Not exactly. Not in its
origin. But magic was involved with it now, driving it to wilder displays of
lightning, fiercer gusts of wind. And who would be able to throw out such powerful
magic here on the Isle except Sheila Greywand?
"There isn't anything we can actually do about... the weather," Thomas said.
Khora shrugged. "Maybe not.... There is a man, a Dwarf, who's been around
lately. Scarbold. He's made some suggestions. Odd ones. I suppose you could say
he's been... campaigning. About... the weather."
Thomas shook his head. "No, don't do it. If he's trying to change... the
weather, better to leave him to do it on his own. That isn't something ordinary
people should mix in. Safer to saddle a tiger."
Before Khora could answer, a particularly loud boom cut across the noises of the
storm. Not thunder. The kind of sound you got from the cruder sort of teleportal
spells. The kind that weren't supposed to be used these days. Too dangerous, too
likely to go wrong in gruesome ways. All the candles in the room flickered once and
went out, and the fire sank to dull red coals. Both gladiators hurried to the
window.
The storm darkness was lit by a pillar of fire. Too big and too sharply defined
to be the result of a lightning strike; it must be something to do with the boom
they'd heard. Thomas estimated that it was near the arena, perhaps rising from one
of the adjacent dormitories. They were disused now, there were plenty of apartments
for the few gladiators active in Lirin Kiv. But if the dormitories were empty, the
pillar of fire was not. Bodies were woven into the flames, none of them clearly
seen. Here a leg, there an arm, a torso, a head. Some were human, near enough.
Others were not. Trolls. Great cats, like an transformed Aruaki. Wolves. Eagles.
Dragons.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Anybody want to listen to Alarond the Scribe? No? Somehow I guessed that'd be
your reaction. Well, extracting the meat of his blatherings, we find:
Darlina did really well out of a victory over Uhlek.
The "Top Team" is sending its warriors up to Talahya to do dishes at the
Dripping Blade there (we don't have a branch of that franchise here, too low class)
when they lose fights. That'd be Slytherin House. Is this some special foible of
the Champion of the Horn? Some of 'em get a little squirrelly when they hit the top
rank.
No avoids were used this time.
Tairikia got the most challenges, and it could simply have been a double
challenge by one warrior that gave her that "most." It isn't like we were hip-deep
in challenges this time. Or even in active warriors!
Nineteen fights, three standbys. Thirty-five active warriors, I think. And
some of them weren't VERY active.
But nobody died.
King Love challenged Deadbolt (that's "dead from the neck up") and won. I gotta
feel sorry for Deadbolt and his teammates, sometimes. Is their manager paying any
attention? IS Kyrlania still running empty-handed and unarmored from the aimed blow
contest?
With which we leave Alarond to take a sharp blade and shave his life close, with
the comfort of knowing that even if the blade slips and he gets blood on his purple
robe (awful-looking color on him, too!), it will still BE a purple robe.
The fights:
THOMAS (82-14150) (8-11-0,96) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II fought GREGORY GOYLE (74-
3497) (23-23-1,50) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. THOMAS devastated GREGORY GOYLE in a popular
1 minute one-sided contest. This is what happens when your name gets mentioned in
print. Bet you didn't know that. Of course, there is a down side to this. Try
getting seriously mangled in the arena and see what happens to your role.
ESSINA TYL VERN (75-2694) (19-49-1,108) of SAND DANCERS fought CHEATING MANAGER
(107-6) (0-0-0,130) of Miscellaneous Dolts. ESSINA TYL VERN was overpowered by
CHEATING MANAGER in a 1 minute one-sided bout. I thought we'd gotten rid of that
Cheating Manager. Unless this is yet ANOTHER one? Hmm. I wish they'd identify him
more exactly. I know lots of people that would like to meet him in an alley. It'd
be a convention. Or would it be a deep con cave?
UHLEK (38-4234) (17-8-2,133) of DARK TOADS fought DARLINA (74-2995) (36-25-2,93)
of SAND DANCERS. UHLEK was overpowered by DARLINA in a 1 minute one-sided bout.
Some people were surprised, some were not. Fingers were pointed at rankings, and at
number of visible fights. All of which just goes to show that there is more to
predicting wins than the numbers. Such as the fact that when it comes to a red-
headed woman with dimples, Uhlek is just an old soft Shew.
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (62-64-4,178) of SAND DANCERS fought THE QUICKLING
(70-1669) (51-121-2,113) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TORYN TYL DAGEDA overpowered THE
QUICKLING in a 2 minute bloody mismatched brawl. Toryn said later that she WOULD
have done it faster, but she was bored and decided to play with him a little. Nice
girls don't do things like that, Toryn.
SHYLOCK (75-2602) (40-36-1,179) of DARK TOADS fought NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (65-88-
0,165) of DARKLINGS. SHYLOCK was overpowered by NIGHTCAP in an action packed 1
minute uneven struggle. And what, you may well wonder, will this defeat at the hands
of somebody dark have on Shylock's return to his home town, and possible events
there? Something sinister, no doubt. Most plot twists are sinister. You'd think we
had nothing but left-handed writers.
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (62-98-1,169) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought DAMORETH STENN (65-
6105) (41-40-0,149) of SAND DANCERS. KYRLANIA was overcome by DAMORETH STENN in a
popular 2 minute gruesome conflict. So Damoreth does not lose his winning record
after all. Amazing. You'd almost think it was fate or something, when in fact, it's
Kyrlania's handicap--you know, the "stepping out on the sands naked" thing.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (55-77-0,189) of THE DRAGON FIST fought KHORA THE SMALL
(78-519) (115-137-3,202) of SAND DANCERS. CORT NIGHTJEWEL was subdued by KHORA THE
SMALL in a popular 1 minute brawl. I HAVE heard that Khora likes men to be, er,
"subdued." "They" say she's half fox woman, you know, and the fox women have a...
reputation.
WINSTON (75-2600) (49-26-0,182) of DARK TOADS fought NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (95-95-
3,193) of DARKLINGS. WINSTON was demolished by NIGHTFALL in a 2 minute mismatched
competition. There's a note here, someone set a wet glass down on it, but I THINK it
says that Winston has a TV challenge. Why is he not using it? what's the POINT in
having a TV challenge if you don't use it?
DARKMOON BLACKFELL (75-862) (89-70-3,209) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought ARENAMASTER
SANDAVOL (107-28) (0-0-0,200) of Miscellaneous Dolts. DARKMOON BLACKFELL handily
defeated ARENAMASTER SANDAVOL in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Ah, you think I
shouldn't call an arenamaster a dolt? But he IS, you know. He isn't even OUR
arenamaster, he comes down from Crysalis sometimes to "lend a hand." I figure he
should stay home.
TREMERE (9-4915) (38-13-0,214) of DARK TOADS fought BAT (74-2742) (78-76-1,183)
of DARKLINGS. TREMERE vanquished BAT in an exciting 1 minute one-sided flight. That
isn't something you see very often. Not with a toad, you don't. I hear the circus
wants to know if Tremere can do other kinds of trick riding.
SMOLDER DARKSUN (78-513) (74-63-3,213) of THE DRAGON FIST fought ARENAMASTER
SANDAVOL (107-28) (0-0-0,200) of Miscellaneous Dolts. SMOLDER DARKSUN vanquished
ARENAMASTER SANDAVOL in a popular 1 minute uneven duel. See above, Sandavol had
already fought once when he came up against Darksun. Not that it would have made any
difference. Those Crysalese are slow, you know. Almost lazy.
TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (70-89-8,221) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought CYLADIA (51-
1122) (96-110-0,193) of SKAITHVARN. TALON WARSMITH devastated CYLADIA in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided competition. You would THINK that this would cause Cyladia
to pay more attention to her training and her fighting, but I bet you it won't. Her
heart just isn't in it.
And the challenge matches:
TAMRISSA (38-4153) (18-8-0,68) of BLENDING ENTHRONED challenged VINCENT CRABBE
(74-3498) (29-18-2,78) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. Up 10. TAMRISSA was defeated by VINCENT
CRABBE in a 2 minute brutal Challenge struggle. And you, or at least me, I look at
Tamrissa and wonder, "enthroned where, and on what, and why?" Do you suppose anyone
will deign to speak and explain this?
GISELLA (74-2704) (20-14-0,62) of CHEYSULI & LIR challenged WAIS (65-6447) (19-
28-0,73) of DARK TOADS. Up 11. GISELLA bested WAIS in a 2 minute Challenge duel.
The stewards stopped Gisella before she had a chance to pry the jewel out of Wais's
head, though. Just as well. Toads who have jewels in their heads don't do it just
for ornament.
KING LOVE (40-3748) (25-27-2,169) of SUNNYLAND challenged DEADBOLT (70-1664)
(78-101-2,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 24. KING LOVE was defeated by DEADBOLT in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge match. Let's hope, for King Love's sake, that
Deadbolt had something to teach. They tell me that some warriors are just teaching
fools, and some couldn't teach to save their lives. Same way with learning.
TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (30-16-2,180) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE challenged ZALMARDARIN
(78-312) (49-87-3,196) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 16. TOM RIDDLE vanquished ZALMARDARIN
in a popular 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. More riddles, and deep,
convoluted, very subtle ones, too. Do you suppose if he makes it to the top, he'll
write a riddling column? No, you're right, probably not. But we can dream.
VALLANT (38-4151) (37-18-2,157) of BLENDING ENTHRONED challenged JAMMIES (74-
2829) (62-64-1,164) of DARKLINGS. Up 7. VALLANT slimly won victory over JAMMIES in
a popular 2 minute Challenge match. Sneaky of Vallant to cut the cord on Jammies's
jammies, causing him to trip, but anything that works, right Vallant?
ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-6232) (29-30-1,206) of SPLIT INFINITY challenged TAIRIKIA
(51-4247) (73-76-0,207) of SAND DANCERS. Up 1. ROBERTO LEATHAM won victory over
TAIRIKIA in a 2 minute Challenge battle. This is "most challenged" Tairikia. Does
it increase the probability of losing, if you're most challenged? Or are you like to
be most challenged if you're likely to lose? Or is there no connection? Inquiring
minds want to know.
For the Horn, not that anyone gets it without writing a column: DRACO MALFOY
(74-3500) (27-10-1,219) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE TV challenged ZALGOR PRIGG (82-15204) (32-
19-0,226) of MUTANT LEAGUE II. Up 7. DRACO MALFOY devastated ZALGOR PRIGG in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. And congratulations to Draco, even if he is
too busy to write.

Draco Malfoy -- Very well done, for a child. No doubt you will be formidable when
you get your growth. -- Khora the Small
Kyrlania -- Did it ever occur to you that a little armor and maybe even a weapon
would improve your performance? Is this, STILL, a left-over from the aimed-blow
contest? -- Toryn tyl Dageda
Vallant -- My mama always told me to distrust elves, and surely half-elves must be
even less trustworthy? Neither fox nor hare, as the saying goes. -- Tairikia
Tom Riddle -- How many times do I have to say that I'm just no good at all when it
comes to riddles? Mental subtlety is not my strong point. -- Damoreth Stenn
P.S. I hope I win the next one, though, or my winning record--amazing thing to
have!--is down the tubes again.
The Evil Inputter defeated me with bare hands (and something called a "keyboard").
Does this mean I'm going to suffer input errors? Really, I don't need them. I can
lose just fine without. -- Essina tyl Vern
Gisella -- This is paying your dues, kid. -- Darlina

FACE-TO-FACE XXXIV
Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 14-16 January 2005, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd--this is the same hotel as last year). Room rates are $139.00 per night,
1-4 occupancy, which includes breakfast. The rooms are blocked. The reservations
number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with the "Reality Simulations Face to Face
Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a
bar and Mexican restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the
street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
