                            Another Dark and Stormy Night

Draco Malfoy peered out the window and grimaced. "There've been a lot of storms
lately."
Behind him, Khora the Small frowned. She was not accustomed to men--of whatever
age--turning away from her. She expected to dominate a room. Usually she did,
especially if there were men in it. But her voice was smooth as cream when she
answered. "The weather of the Isle echoes the mood of the mistress of the Isle, and
she has been in a dark and stormy mood lately."
Draco shrugged, irritated. "That's just superstition. Sympathetic magic.
Primitive stuff, only fit for old wives. Not the REAL stuff."
"Given the state of the Arcanum," Khora said, "the primitive magics are the only
ones that can be relied on." She poured a little wine into a crystal goblet, pausing
to admire the way it glowed as red as rubies in the firelight. She liked rubies. "I
hear that wizards are gathering down in Willow Beach--"
     Draco turned toward her. "Where?"
"Darkholm. The arena is in the town of Willow Beach. Wizards are gathering
there in the hope of violence, blood to fuel their blood-magic spells."
"There's more blood spilled in Talahya."
Khora shrugged. "I didn't say it was LOGICAL. They're WIZARDS, after all.
Logical is probably a dirty word to wizards."
"I don't know what wizards you're thinking of," Draco said stiffly, "but you're
type-casting the rest. Wizardry requires long, difficult study, and logic is part of
it."
Khora crossed the room to put a hand on his shoulder. "It was not a personal
comment, Draco," she murmured. "It's just... that I have met too many chaos wizards
lately." She took his hand, stepped toward the shadowed doorway at the back of the
sitting room, and tugged gently. "Come with me. There are more entertaining things
to do than quarrel."

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

The Unknown Spymaster was here, and I blame him. He screws around messing
things up in the office, and then he goes off and nobody knows who he is or where he
is to make him straighten up his own messes.
Oh, well. The Split has splat, after a few difficulties. I won't mention any
names, but there were a few gladiators here and there who were seen kicking and
screaming, holding on to the doors of their guildhouses, and declaring that they
didn't want to go. Who can blame 'em? But they went anyway.

So, what are we looking at here, now that the Split has moved through like a
reaper? No deaths, so it wasn't that kind of reaper. Only seventeen fights, but
just one standby, so are numbers aren't VERY much lower than they've been.
No avoids were used this time. At all. Somebody's falling down on the job!
Only two challenges were made, and as far as I can tell, there were no hidden
challenges to make anyone "most challenged."
And since this is very late, we're going with the absolute nearly-minimum of a
spy report here. But I will take just a minute to acknowledge the managers who took
the time to write personals. Got tired of listening to me whine? Sorry about that
(but nor real sorry), and I thank you. It helps.

columns? Well, we'll hope for the best and congratulate Deadbolt on his unsurprising

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Deadbolt -- Wow, that was a good fight! Except the last part where I lost. Still,
it was very exciting. Thanks. -- Cyladia

Larkin -- Olaf Modeen, calling me an old fossil? Well, all right, I'm seasoned, but
not a fossil by any means. I was Miss Darkholm just ten or twelve years ago! Maybe
fifteen. Not that long. And I can still do the splits! Can Olaf Modeen do the
splits? I'd be happy to come up to that office and help him find out. -- Cyladia

Ten or twelve years, maybe fifteen? Ooo-kay.

Kyrlania -- You're quite good at this. Your record doesn't do you justice at all. --
Nightcap

Larkin -- The action that was packed in the fight wasn't the thing getting pounded
down firmly into the sand. That was me. And I still have some in my ears. --
Nightcap
P.S. Sand I mean, not action.

That's good. Action in the ears leads to ringing. And unless your day job is
head ringer in a carillon, ringing is not good.

Oh, ptui! I fought a stand-in. At least I beat him...but he learned two skills and
I learned nothing. Double ptui!! -- Bat
P.S. AND he ate the last of the salsa. Triple ptui!!!

Standbys have nothing to teach. It's a prerequisite for the job.

Vallant -- The momentum sure shifted to my foe, all right. And stayed there. Well
fought. Ouch! -- Nightfall

Larkin -- Then he should have given Khora that comeuppance, not me. I didn't have
any comeuppance comeupping. -- Nightfall

The Quickling -- You're very strong for such a little guy. At least I learned
something from the fight, though. -- Jammies

Larkin -- I don't really know how it happened (the Quickling beating me I mean).
Maybe he won't next time, with the train I got. But I agree, we do need some new
opponents here. And not mimes! -- Jammies

You have something against mimes, do you?

Damoreth Stenn -- I don't think so. No matter how upset you may get at the healers,
I just think it's a bad idea to beat them up. At least for me, since I wake up in
the infirmary a lot. Don't want to wake up and find my big toes sewn together. --
Jammies

That would make it hard to wear socks.

Zalgor Prigg -- Well don't give up on your managing; who knows, maybe one day you
might actually be good at it. -- Draco Malfoy

     Zzzzing!

Draco -- No insulting our allies! Ten point demerit for that. -- Rillion

Khora -- You are even smaller when you are on the ground. You should avoid that in
the future. -- Draco

She's lazy. We all knew that.

Zalmardarin -- Grrr...that fight should have been mine, you lucky punk. -- Tom Riddle

Darlina -- Good to know I can always rely on you for a win and a skill. Thanks for
the train that was the last of my defense skills I had been waiting for. -- Vincent
Crabbe

Vincent -- Now you just need a bunch of grammar skills. -- Rillion

Essina -- Wow, I've actually got a winning record here now! -- Gregory Goyle

Gregory -- I see you still need some math skills...you are still just 5-7 here,
although you are back to a winning record overall. -- Rillion

Draco Malfoy -- What's a fine young man like you doing in a place like this, hmm?
Just you come over to MY place and... we'll see! -- Khora the Small, willing to
undertake the social education of a young man of parts, for a modest fee and the good
of womankind everywhere

I'd avoid that, if I were you, Draco. I know Khora's a fox, but that's just it.
     She really IS a fox.

Vincent Crabbe -- That was amazing. It was even impressive. -- Darlina
P.S. But where did that wheel come from? Who'd put a wheel in the arena? I tripped
over the darned thing!

It's the latest exterior decorating trend. The Old West look, you know.

Gregory Goyle -- (heavy sigh) You bring home the truth of what I have long
suspected, which is a mixed metaphor, I think, but we both know what I mean: I'm not
cut out for the gladiatorial life. Maybe I'll retire. -- Essina tyl Vern

Larkin -- I'm charismatic and attractive, and people in Jade Mountain were NICE to
me. Not like here! -- Essina

     Or sorry for you.

Tremere -- You're kind of cute, actually. I like it that you keep your beard short.
The long ones can look so untidy, but a neat, trimmed beard... rather attractive,
actually. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
P.S. Even sexy.

Ooooh, she's coming on to you! Watch out, kid, she's got those kills....

Thomas -- I tell you most sincerely, it was a pleasure to fight you. I look forward
to other encounters. -- Tairikia
P.S. So you're a golem, so what? If everything is present and correct, everything
fully functional, so, as they say, what? I'll bet being a golem gives you remarkable
stamina!

Larkin -- You know nothing about it! After the fight, I was very tender with Thomas.
And he APPRECIATED it. -- Tairikia

Uhlek -- That surprised me, but I'm not going to turn down the win. It keeps me on
the positive side. Of course, having a positive win/loss means I keep on fighting,
but I can live with that, I guess. For now. -- Damoreth Stenn

Larkin -- You know I'm mediocre, I know it, probably every warrior and manager here
knows it. But do you have to SAY it? -- Damoreth Stenn

Yeah. You try coming up with NEW things to say every two weeks, year after
year. Any old comment begins to look new and commentable after a while.

What a reptilian, or possibly amphibian, turn that was for us! We seem to have
fought nothing but Slytherin House and Dark Toads. Not that we're complaining,
although I wouldn't MIND if my warriors had won more. But considering they're Sand
Dancers, that's probably the best we can hope for. -- Li Dan
P.S. I note with surprise that Khora is not being Inducted. Eligible, yes, but not
yet Inducted.

Vallant -- Another twelve or thirteen turns, yes, since I was not Inducted. But I
probably won't make it through the next Split. -- Khora

Battle Royal 4
The Battle Royal arena contests are one of the purest tests of manager skill
available. The rules are simple. The scoring is simple. The updates are live. If
you would like to participate, simply get a team ready in Talcama in the next month
and announce in the personals that you're in. The prize is bragging rights and
having your name along side previous winners (Doc Steele, Manray Frothingslosh, and
Manager). It is a brutal contest, but it is a lot of fun!
Basic rules: No avoiding other contest teams. Score = Wins + Kills - Losses.
Only fights against other BR teams count. First team to 25 wins!
BR4 begins in Talcama (DM 18) on turn 502, due on Jan 29, 2005.
