                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Just a hotbed of activity, Lirin Kiv. Renovators here, painters there,
carpenters somewhere else. And Debby Tonte everywhere. Never at a loss for an
opinion, Debby. But she's a good kid even so. Friendly. Maybe a little flaky, but
who'll notice?
The latest news regarding the proposed merging of Lirin Kiv with Free Blades:
Here in Lirin Kiv, the Sand Dancers have expressed themselves in favor of it, more or
less. The Nightlings have a hankering for a little bit of circus life. The
associates of these gladiators in Free Blades haven't spoken on the topic yet, but
probably will. Other than that, the ONLY response to the proposal to date is from a
manager who is active in neither arena.
It's the old typical story: Back when some of the basic arenas were being
closed, there was an outcry, in a small way, about, for example, closing Khalhums.
But could fifteen managers be found to run teams in Khalhums and thus keep it open?
As if! And I confidently expect that it will be the same here--how many years has it
been since we had fifteen active managers in this arena? Which isn't all that
surprising, when you come to think of it, because the whole gladiatorial thing is
foreign to the Adantri culture. You should hear some of the Emperor's advisers on
the subject!

Anyway, on to today's fights, such as they were.
Scarlet Knights were avoided by Slytherin House. Theirs were the only avoids
issued.
There was ONE challenge that went through. Just ONE. Does anybody wonder why
this arena is slated for closing/merging?
Fifteen fights total, involving twenty-eight active warriors (two standbys
fought today--and won).
     One death.

Even in the interests of getting this to the printer in a timely manner, it
won't cause much delay to talk about every fight. So....
GREGORY GOYLE (74-3497) (28-35-1,61) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought R.O.U.S. (107-4)
(0-0-0,50) of the Vicious Rat Crew. GREGORY GOYLE was viciously subdued by R.O.U.S.
in an action packed 3 minute duel. It would appear that there was a lot of hostility
stored up in that Rat.
TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777) (66-77-4,116) of SAND DANCERS fought IMPRISONED SPY
(107-9) (0-0-0,170) of the Secret Union of Spies and Assassins. TORYN TYL DAGEDA was
defeated by IMPRISONED SPY in a 2 minute gory duel. There's a rumor that someone
told the spy that if he won the fight, he would be released. That'd be a first.
DAMORETH STENN (65-6105) (46-52-0,137) of SAND DANCERS fought WAIS (65-6447)
(26-38-0,136) of DARK TOADS. DAMORETH STENN was beaten by WAIS in a crowd pleasing 1
minute conflict. What is it with these two? They fight each other, they go to
dinner together, they vanish for days at a time--the same days at the same time--and
return with the same suntan and fisherman's tales....
UHLEK (38-4234) (19-17-3,173) of DARK TOADS fought KING LOVE (40-3748) (35-34-
2,150) of SUNNYLAND. UHLEK demolished KING LOVE in a 1 minute mismatched match. Can
a toad love? Specifically, can a toad love someone who is not a toad? Not that I
figure King Love is a prospect, but his name raised the question in my mind. And
there is the case of Damoreth and Wais.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (59-90-0,169) of THE DRAGON FIST fought WITCH (75-3088)
(23-6-1,176) of THAT'S US. CORT NIGHTJEWEL demolished WITCH in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched competition. Is this going to usher in a season of witch-hunts?
We could do without that sort of thing.

THOMAS (82-14150) (16-20-2,161) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II fought VALLANT (38-4151)
(45-27-2,166) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. THOMAS was overpowered by VALLANT in a 1 minute
one-sided fight. I suppose you could say that Thomas has been blended, though not
enthroned.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (60-129-2,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought JAMMIES (74-
2829) (69-74-1,161) of DARKLINGS. THE QUICKLING was defeated by JAMMIES in an action
packed 1 minute match. It was Jammies who was quick here. And in that costume, he
certainly should be! The potential for sunburn is enormous!
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (74-103-1,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought ROBERTO LEATHAM (65-
6232) (36-40-1,181) of SPLIT INFINITY. KYRLANIA vanquished ROBERTO LEATHAM in an
action packed 1 minute gory uneven fight. Neither of them will mention it, so who
cares?
VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498) (38-26-2,191) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought BRAND (82-
13289) (21-20-1,185) of TOADS OF AMBER III. VINCENT CRABBE was viciously subdued by
BRAND in an action packed 2 minute melee. I'm not sure where the "vicious" comes
into this, as there was so much action packed into those two minutes that it was hard
to tell what was going on. Blurs and flashes and a lot of flying blood.
DARLINA (74-2995) (45-33-2,184) of SAND DANCERS fought TOM RIDDLE (74-3501) (35-
28-2,154) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. DARLINA butchered TOM RIDDLE in a 1 minute one-sided
competition. One-sided? That phrasing is a masterpiece of understatement.

     NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (78-92-0,264) of DARKLINGS fought TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (83-83-
0,189) of SAND DANCERS. NIGHTCAP was overpowered by TAIRIKIA in a 1 minute one-sided
struggle. Honestly, now, do you see Tai's name as being any harder to spell than the
old spelling of arena 33? What is it with these Darklings, anyway?
DEADBOLT (70-1664) (92-104-2,232) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought BAT (74-2742) (84-
87-1,209) of DARKLINGS. DEADBOLT bested BAT in an action packed 2 minute brawl.
This is no way to get up to a winning record, Bat. You have to try harder.
TALON WARSMITH (99-101) (85-91-8,219) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought KHORA THE SMALL
(78-519) (128-141-3,196) of SAND DANCERS. TALON WARSMITH devastated KHORA THE SMALL
in a popular 1 minute one-sided contest. No doubt Khora, at least, will have
something to say about this one.

Our lone challenge: DRACO MALFOY (74-3500) (37-17-1,204) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE
challenged CYLADIA (51-1122) (105-118-1,227) of SKAITHVARN. Up 23. DRACO MALFOY was
devastated by CYLADIA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. It's those cold
hands. Somebody should give this woman a pair of magic gloves.

And for the title: ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (57-96-3,226) of THE DRAGON FIST fought
NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (107-100-4,279) of DARKLINGS. ZALMARDARIN was demolished by
NIGHTFALL in a popular 1 minute one-sided Title melee. Way to GO, Nightfall. Write
us a column.

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Tom Riddle -- Nice sparring at the beginning there. You're pretty fast. -- Bat

Darlina -- I wasn't trying to slay you. That defensive move I showed you, practice
that. It could have helped you both times I hit you in that fight. -- Nightfall

Brand -- It's embarrassing to beat a warrior as inexperienced as you (though of
course it would be way more embarrassing to lose to you). Sorry I couldn't show you
any moves you could use. You just aren't ready for the ones I can teach. -- Nightcap

Thomas -- What Nightcap said, exactly! And hang in there, you'll get the hang of
Isle style. -- Cyladia

Wais -- That was a nice, aggressive start. Good strategy, going for my weak side.
You would have done fine if you were fighting someone closer to your own level of
experience. (smiling) Did you notice how all the Lord Protectors in the stands

cried out when I hit you in the thigh? Those are some nice legs you've got there. I
suggest you cover them with metal, at least until you've got a bit more experience in
relation to your opponents. -- Jammies

Larkin -- Personally I like the circus idea, but my guildmates prefer that Lirin Kiv
be joined with Free Blades. That's okay too, I guess. Could we at least have
sequined ladies ride around the arena standing on white horses between the fights
sometimes? I'd do it. I have my own white horse. Colredes could design my
costumes. -- Cyladia

We'll see. There are probably strings attached.

Larkin -- Lirin Kiv is to close/merge with Free Blades? What a shame. LK is an
arena that I hold fond memories of. I hope the GC is proactive if this happens and
lets all managers know well in advance what options they have. This would hold true
if any arena closes/merges. Salute! -- The Icelord

Your personal puzzles me. You "hold fond memories" of this arena, and yet
aren't active here? If more people fought here--more MANAGERS, not just more
warriors from the same handful--there wouldn't be any closing or merging of the
arena. This same question was covered when the basic arenas were closed some
     years ago.
And you're concerned that the Commission might not let managers know in
advance? Not to worry, Debby Tonte and I plan to talk about it exhaustively for
     the next several months.
The options will be as usual: 100, 101 for the young or pudly, the
appropriate regional (in this case 103), 102 for the old and skilled, and 106.

Brand -- You didn't seem toad-like to me. I thought you were rather handsome...
well, until I hit you in the forehead, but I know that was healed later. -- Nightfall

They tell me many toads are handsome if kissed by a member of the opposite sex.
Perhaps the blow to the forehead was confused by the toad-spell for a love-tap?

Dear Mantor, I see myself and two teammates in the Grand Challenger Champions! One
of us is all too likely to become Champion of the Horn next turn. All I can say is,
I hope we get merged with Free Blades as soon as possible so the competition gets
tougher and we all drop down in rank. -- Nightfall

     You must be psychic.

Darlina -- I may be a fossil, but I'm also the only one on my team with a winning
record. (smiling) I don't think I want to retire yet. Though I will consider it if
I end up as Champion of the Horn. -- Nightfall

The Blacksmith learned three skills from me, and didn't teach me anything! Not fair.
-- Nightcap

     He's always been stingy.

Kyrlania -- That wasn't one of your best days, I think. I would have thought your
style would work better against mine. -- Bat

Tiairikiai -- You've really got that strategy worked out. I think you're right on
your favorites, considering those flashy attacks. -- Jammies

Her name isn't THAT hard to spell.

Uhlek -- Didn't mean to kill you. I don't go out there with bloodlust. Well,
bloodlust maybe but not deathlust. Eww, definitely not deathlust. Anyway I sent you
a card, did you get it? -- Cyladia

Zalmardarin -- I suppose there isn't any more hope for a column from you than from
your teammate, the dwarf. Oh, well. With luck, we'll all get sucked off to Primus
at the next Split, and it won't ever be a question for us again. Or else somebody
tough from Free Blades will kick you out of the title, which is also acceptable.
Those people have to be good for something. -- Khora the Small

     They do?

Talon Warsmith -- I never did care for dwarves much. -- Darlina

Jammies -- I've seen some wild costumes on you since Larkin started making the
"pajama golem" jokes, but this is one of the wildest. -- Tairikia

Thomas -- Ah, you poor golem of a toad, I'll bet fighting is all you've got in your
"life." -- Damoreth Stenn, who also has fishing, and sitting by the fireplace
drinking hot toddies, and walking in the woods on a winter night, and several other
things as well

King Love -- I hate you. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
