THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Champion of the Horn
Hi Everyone!
Well, here I am, the biggest fish in our little pond. (smiling) It may not be
as difficult to get to the top as it would be if the arena were bigger, but still it
is an honor. Champion of the Horn! I've been practicing, and it was me that played
a short fanfare before the fights started this time around. Did you notice?
No, it isn't my first time up here. First time in quite a while, though. I've
been feeling very blue, and my fighting has reflected that. I'm sure Primus is not
far away now, which means retirement if Mantor smiles upon me, or eternal humiliation
and loss if my manager forgets to retire me.
Should Lirin Kiv be joined with Free Blades? I think so. We need the
competition. I do enjoy the fact that Lirin Kiv has been a little cultural enclave,
a bit of our homeland in this strange place... but it's time to emerge from that
safety.
My fight with Talon Warsmith was VERY close. The announcer rated him ahead into
the third minute, and with good cause. He hit me repeatedly, disarmed me, knocked me
down twice, and I failed to do him any damage at all. But he was getting tired.
Then with my backup weapon I swung mightily, hit him on the leg and knocked him down,
then hit him on the jaw (and believe me, you don't want to take a devastating blow to
the jaw with a scimitar), and that did it. He surrendered. I guess he doesn't have
that much stamina. I am not a scummy Striker. He was voted this turn's favorite; I
guess the audience has a lot of sympathy for anyone who gets tired during a fight.
That's silly. Talon should run laps to improve his endurance; he doesn't deserve any
pity for being in terrible shape.
It looks like I'll be fighting Deadbolt, unless he avoids me. He's a Total
Parry. Maybe I'll get tired and be next turn's favorite, eh? But believe me, I'm
running laps to get ready.
Larkin didn't even mention my outfit that I wore in honor of the title fight.
It was midnight blue, spattered with rhinestones. Kind of picked up on the Darklings
theme, you know. This time I'm wearing black, with a silver "rising moon" emblem on
my kichai.
That's all I have to say. I hope you all fight as bravely as befits your
homeland.
Nightfall
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
The Unknown Spymaster? Bah! He's hiding his identity because he's ashamed of
the quality of his output. That's one who is NOT a golem, but nobody can tell.
Only fourteen fights, again, well, okay, we knew we had that problem. No point
beating a dead horse. We'll probably be merged with Free Blades by the end of the
year, and while that will be sad in one sense, really, what have we got to lose? The
chance of fighting the same warriors every time out. Gee, can you stand it? There
will be TOTALLY NEW faces here! If you go out to get up a volley ball match, there
will be enough gladiators to make up two whole teams! If you want to hold a square
dance, you'll be able to make up more than one square. Okay, sure, this has a
downside, there might actually be two or three people ahead of you in a LINE in some
store, but at least the stores will have enough business to stay open. And, hey,
this cultural cross-fertilization thing might actually be good. You never know till
you try it.
Uh, where was I? Oh, right. Fourteen fights, two challenges, no avoids, one
standby. That's the way it's been running lately.
GREGORY GOYLE (74-3497) (34-38-1,95) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE fought ARIA (75-3012)
(25-30-1,76) of DARK TOADS. GREGORY GOYLE overpowered ARIA in a 1 minute uneven
struggle. This despite the fact that Aria looked much better in royal blue than Greg
did in pumpkin. I know it's the season for pumpkins, Greg, but don't let some fast-
talking tailor sell you a pie!
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (61-137-2,153) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought MOCKINGBIRD
(75-3073) (24-16-0,114) of DARK TOADS. THE QUICKLING viciously subdued MOCKINGBIRD
in a popular 4 minute gruesome conflict. This is so horrid! To even TRY to kill a
mockingbird! Horrors! Not to mention that grue is hard to get out of the sand.
WAIS (65-6447) (29-44-0,173) of DARK TOADS fought DARLINA (74-2995) (48-39-
3,177) of SAND DANCERS. WAIS subdued DARLINA in a popular 1 minute brawl. I swear,
there IS some mystical power in that jewel in Wais's forehead. Not that I think the
win was unreasonable, but I know for a fact that Darlina is an abstemious woman, and
yet she was reeling around out there like a champion drunkard.
KYRLANIA (70-2327) (80-106-1,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought DAMORETH STENN (65-
6105) (48-59-0,157) of SAND DANCERS. KYRLANIA devastated DAMORETH STENN in an
exciting 1 minute mismatched conflict. Ah, this is what happens when a veteran
doesn't keep his mind on the job. Oh, yeah, count on it, Damoreth's distracted with
planning the big harvest-festival party he plans to throw on his Lord Protector lands
north of Dal Shang. He's promised great fishing to all who attend (you have to catch
your dinner).
BRAND (82-13289) (26-24-1,203) of TOADS OF AMBER III fought TOM RIDDLE (74-3501)
(39-33-2,178) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. BRAND overpowered TOM RIDDLE in an exciting 1
minute one-sided fight. I reckon this must be some special power in the amber. You
thought maybe Brand has a yellow complexion, or paints his forehead yellow, or
something like that? Nope. Amber insets. Or something like that, maybe not insets
actually into his head. I can't be sure, not having examined the forehead under
discussion close up and personal. Maybe the Infirmarian can enlighten us? Yes,
okay, Brand won this fight, but he's lost some in the past, so the Infirmarian must
have seen him at some point. And those guys notice everything.
ZALMARDARIN (78-312) (63-99-3,191) of THE DRAGON FIST fought THOMAS (82-14150)
(18-27-2,161) of TOADS OF KRONDUR II. ZALMARDARIN defeated THOMAS in an action
packed 1 minute match. Life is tough, isn't it, Thomas? A word of advice: never
trust anyone whose name starts with a zee. They generally have beady eyes and nasty
laughs and sticky fingers.
BAT (74-2742) (89-91-1,192) of DARKLINGS fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (64-94-
0,178) of THE DRAGON FIST. BAT vanquished CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a 1 minute one-sided
duel. Cort was NOT wearing his jewel in his forehead, and you see what comes of
that! But it takes a toad to wear a jewel properly.
TAIRIKIA (51-4247) (90-85-0,206) of SAND DANCERS fought VINCENT CRABBE (74-3498)
(40-33-2,171) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. TAIRIKIA viciously subdued VINCENT CRABBE in an
action packed 2 minute gory duel. Oooh, bad match for you, Vince! Especially with
Tai feeling nasty. They tell me she always gets nasty when the moon is dark. Some
kind of "dark goddess" deal here. I'd ask her about it, but, well, *I* am not a
gladiator, *I* am not reckless with my life.
JAMMIES (74-2829) (73-79-1,182) of DARKLINGS fought VILLAINOUS INFORMER (107-23)
(0-0-0,181) of the College of Mimes. JAMMIES handily defeated VILLAINOUS INFORMER in
an action packed 1 minute uneven fight. Strangled him with his socks. Disgusting
image.
CYLADIA (51-1122) (111-121-1,206) of SKAITHVARN fought DRACO MALFOY (74-3500)
(43-20-1,206) of SLYTHERIN HOUSE. CYLADIA overpowered DRACO MALFOY in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided struggle. She calls this "teaching the kids about the
darker side of life."
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (83-96-0,219) of DARKLINGS fought TALON WARSMITH (99-101)
(92-93-8,201) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTCAP was overpowered by TALON WARSMITH in a 1
minute mismatched match. Hmm, maybe this time, you SHOULD have given him a rum-
spiked milky drink. Not that dwarves get drunk easily. Hard heads, dwarves. Comes
of being ready to have a cave fall in on them at any moment.
DESPERADO (77-2459) (24-10-2,144) of POSSE challenged TORYN TYL DAGEDA (74-2777)
(70-82-4,127) of SAND DANCERS. Down 17, but way up in the matter of experience.
Unless Des has been doing tourneys, and even then, I bet his FE doesn't match
Toryn's. DESPERADO was handily defeated by TORYN TYL DAGEDA in a 1 minute Challenge
match. Especially now that she's all annoyed because her manager didn't change her
training in time for this match.
MAD DOC WILLIAMS (77-2432) (28-9-0,182) of POSSE challenged KHORA THE SMALL (78-
519) (135-143-3,209) of SAND DANCERS. Up 27. MAD DOC WILLIAMS was devastated by
KHORA THE SMALL in a 2 minute Challenge fight. No surprise. We all know that Khora
is a devastating woman.
And for the title: NIGHTFALL (74-2421) (114-102-4,230) of DARKLINGS fought
DEADBOLT (70-1664) (98-107-2,225) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. NIGHTFALL vanquished DEADBOLT
in a 2 minute gory mismatched Title brawl. Good to see that, Nightfall. Do it
again!

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I'm going to be on vacation this turn, so no challenges this turn. But I
figured I'd at least get some personal ads submitted before I left town. -- Rillion
And we thank you for it! Have an enjoyable vacation.
Jammies -- Yeah, that knockdown decided the fight. Hopefully one day when we fight
again I'll be able to keep my feet. -- Vincent Crabbe
Didn't the Infirmarian return them after the fight was over?
Larkin -- How can it be an upset when a warrior with a winning record beats a warrior
that has lost over two-thirds of his fights? But hey, who am I to complain with the
bookies bad judgement, more money for me! -- Vincent Crabbe
Exactly so. It was an upset because the bookies were upset. Watch out for
them, that Carlos especially. He invented "nasty."
Aria -- Sick of fighting me yet? -- Gregory Goyle
Mad Doc Williams -- That was a really brave challenge. And I taught you nothing.
Sorry. The truth is, I don't know very much TO teach. -- Nightcap
Larkin -- Are you implying that that spiced milk I offered Mad Doc before our fight
was spiked? I would never. I often get an upset tummy before a fight and I find
that the spiced milk soothes it. -- Nightcap
Sorry, kid, but if Mad Doc wanted to think and fight at the same time, he didn't
have any processing capacity left for digestion. And sloshing spiked, er,
spiced milk (was that rum you put in it?) can be a major distraction.
Talon Warsmith -- Messed up your record, sorry. Well, not that sorry. That's what
you get for not writing a column. -- Nightfall
P.S. Larkin, you're right. Bat thought I said I had never had a title fight before,
but what I really told him was I never thought I'd have a title fight again.
Well, keep on doing whatever it is you're doing now. It's working.
Wais -- You're very elusive. You really made me work for that victory. -- Cyladia
Damoreth Stenn -- One shot? I never thought of myself as the type to one-shot
anybody, especially not a strapping case like yourself. Guess you weren't ready when
the fight started. -- Bat
Thomas -- I don't think there's much to say about our fight. Have you seen the new
comedy at the Talahya Grand Theatre? Laughed my socks off! -- Jammies
You wore SOCKS to the theater? How uncouth!
Tom Riddle -- You're a cheeky kid, aren't you? -- Tairikia
P.S. I've wondered about that figure of speech sometimes. When you get right down
and stare it in the eye, it's an odd image. Do you resemble, for instance, a
chipmonk with its mouth full? I wouldn't have said so.
Desperado -- I thought you were the kind of person that got CHASED by a posse, not
the kind that BELONGED to one. -- Toryn tyl Dageda
P.S. Cool, I've maxed.
Deadbolt -- Oh. It's you. -- Darlina
Gojiro -- Hmm, I always heard you Ratani were not to be trusted. I see now that it's
true. -- Khora the Small
Bat -- I didn't know you could come into the arena with a fancy black cape and
flutter around. How odd! -- Damoreth Stenn
P.S. They say that bats tend to carry rabies. Any truth in that?

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.
19 September 2005
I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101
5 October 2005
To those once of Willaf -- It's time to come back to the sands. I'm back,
exclusively at Willaf.... -- Kurd the Vivisectionist, Your Better
