REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Greetings Warriors!
It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to share the glory (and the very likely chance
of total extermination) of this newfound world with you. Yes, they dragged me AWAY
from nearly a decade of retirement (those fellows using my name in the arenas, you
ask? Well, you see, I incorporated. They are simply Zontani clones... so that the
arenas will always have my splendid spy reporting. I did that when I retired); took
me from the very arms of a woman whom I care not to name (the fear of prosecution can
motivate even an old braggart like me to still his tongue!) and then they put me
through one of those darned gates that Sheila seems to spend so much time worrying
about. So here I am, enjoying these purple skies with the rest of you bunch of
unshaven, bad smelling proto-humans.
Speaking of the Gate... Wow, what a trip! I didn't know a person's insides could
feel that way. They say there's no going back to the land of the bright stars without
Sheila's magic...and if it means I don't have to carry a bottle of Tums with me
everywhere for a week after, well then I guess I'm glad. Still, I will miss a few
favorite wenches and taverns that will never again know the gracefull sunshine of my
presense... sniff... Hey! Have any of you lugs thought about what we are going to do
about getting a good drink around here? I mean, killing isn't everything, you know.
When the killing's done (or at least the humiliating thrashing) there has got to be a
good tavern, a fine homebrew ale and a pleasant maid or three to spend some time with.
Why do you think they chose me for this assignment anyway? I mean I realize that you
walking lumps of scar tissue are supposed to be the finest warriors of Alastari, here
to defend our homeworld from dire threats, etc, etc. But what about me? Was it
something I did? Is it my choice of deodorant? Could it be that Sheila finally
started wondering about those berry picking excursions I want on with her niece... Who
knows? Maybe my number just came up at the Spymaster's Guild Annual Charrity Ball
And Exile Lottery.
But hey, I suppose you apes would like to hear something about this week's games
rather than listen to me prattle on like an old woman? Too bad. It's been years
since I had such an APPRECIATIVE audience to listen to me ramble. Of course if this
place was anything more than a Keep filled with muscle bound leatherheads, then you
guys would have something to do besides gather round my knees like school children.
If you ask me, I would say your first task beyond continuing your training would be to
breathe some life into this place. We do need a proper tavern. A few shops wouldn't
hurt. And the more sneaky ones among you...see what you can do about smuggling in
some WOMEN and ALE! Have I gotten this point through yet!?!
All right, all right, a few highlights from this week's games. It looks like we
know who our first Gate Commander (can you say "Head Honcho"? I knew you could) will
be. Let's hear a warm round of sheild clattering for Jimmy the Hand of the Riftwar
Masters. He's the man on top at this point. Of course with the likes of the Gate
Captains he has below him able to challenge, I think he will be sharpening his avoids
as well as his swords. On the flip side of the arena sands, First Founder of M.U.L.E.
Team has been voted MOST LIKELY TO BE THE FIRST ONE EATEN BY A CHAOS MONSTER. Don't
feel too bad First -- I can imagine the scene now..."No please, please, Mr. Manager,
sir, I'm not ready to be that kind of hero! Please, not the gate..NOOOOOOO!" I love
the sound of screaming in the morning. It reminds me of my youth on the wrong side of
Mordant city. What do you mean there is no "right" side of Mordant? Didn't you know
that in the North Quarter they won't pick your pocket unless at least two guys can
agree that you really deserve it?
On a final note, it made my old heart feel good to see that five warriors had the
guts to sample the Gateway itself on the very first round of fights. Bravo! Hey, a
couple of guys even lived through the experience. Kudos to you Char$ and Jeremy!
Fun, travel, and slaughter. These are the good things in life are they not? Well, I
hear the sound of dinner plates clanking in the main hall, which means that I will now
take my leave of you before the roast lizard gets cold. (I cannnot say alot of good
things about the local cuisine). Until next time, keep your wits sharp, your eyes
peeled, any your hands away from my wallet!
-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Oh, boy, first turn! (I hope.) How many bad boys (and girls) we got here? -- Techno-
Geek
Well, here we are in Gateway, and my guess is that we'll find Vengeance at the top of
the rankings again. However, I think he will find it much tougher to hold on to than
in Primus. (That is, provided we are using the same challenge system. Who knows?!)
-- Neon Necromancer
Does anyone else find it incredibly annoying that we had to send our warriors here
with absolutely no word from the Lady Greywand on how this place is going to work?
What are we supposed to do here, besides the normal dueling with each other? And is
that going to be any different? Are the rankings the same? How do you reach the
gates? What are our limits? I hope we find out soon. -- Neon Necromancer, Warden of
the Dark Circle

GATEWAY OPENS
The Gateway Arena, AD 108, will be opening on November 29th. Any Primus-inducted
warrior is eligible to go to Gateway. If you haven't already let us know which of
your warriors will be travelling through the Gate to defend Alastari, send us their
strategy sheets before the 29th! Good duelling!

AVERAGE
I was trying to design a warrior that would have no weaknesses, when my mind
wandered (It does this a lot!) to what would be the average stat for this game called
Duelmasters.
Almost at once I came upon the number nine. Why, you may ask?
Okay, I'll tell you, after all that's the point of this article. There are
nineteen levels for each stat, half this is 9.5, since RSI randomly assigns attributes
between 3-21.
In this manner, even if they assign an attribute below average, the player can
bring it up to at least average by adding 6 points when he modifies the rollup. I
checked this assumption with some rolls I have recieved, and it appears to run true
with some interesting results.
A 9 SZ seems to allow use of any weapon without being too small.
9 ST seems to allow you to use most weapons without the comment "does not have ST
to use weapon well."
9 SP with a 9 DF will give the normal speed/coordinance to offensive warriors and
to PS, PL and PR. (Does anyone thing WS, TP, AB are normal?)
9 WT with a 9 WL will give no negative wit/will statement (no positive one
either).
A 9 in all attributes leaves 21 points to modify the key stats for a warrior's
style.
I have been trying for a while to design warriors with a minimum of 9 in all
attributes, or to at least be able to train to a 9 in a couple of raises. I am still
trying with mixed results to date.
I lost track to the point or purpose of this article, but maybe it will provoke
some thought, yes, no, maybe? Suggestion and comments will come.

Update
"How the Alliances Did"
Hi, all. Remember in the Halloween Mail-In Spy Report I said I wasn't sure who
all belonged in what alliance, so I might need to have someone correct me? Well, you
can bet those alliances did, and in droves. So here's a more accurate chart. If I'm
still wrong... well, we all know I'm never wrong. Just temporarily inaccurate. Let
me know and I'll do another update, if necessary. ;)

FACE-TO-FACE XVI
Guess what? The Superbowl is going to be in Tempe next year! And no, we're not
holding the Face-to-Face on the same weekend! As a matter of fact, we can't even hold
our F-t-F anywhere in town during the months of January through March without room
rates rising above $125 per night. (And I figured you didn't want that.) So next
year we're going to switch our Winter F-t-F with the Mail-in, making it a Winter Mail-
in and a Spring F-t-F. (Confused yet?)
In addition, we're going to be holding the F-t-F in conjunction with Riallicon,
which is a local gaming convention. Rumor has it that there will be speakers and a
Magic the Gathering (tm) tournament, in addition to other stuff. And all of you Face-
to-Face attendees will get a Riallicon badge, so you can attend the other events and
gaming going on for free!
The dates will be April 12th-14th, Friday through Sunday. It'll be at the Safari
Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona (4611 N Scottsdale Rd). Room rates are $85.00 per
night, single/double occupancy, $10 for each additional guest, $120 for a suite (has
stove and mini refrigerator). (They're very strict about all guests being registered,
and will kick everyone out of the room if they catch unregistered people sleeping in
the rooms. Please don't get us in trouble!) The rooms are blocked, so you can call
to reserve your room (tell them you're with the Reality Simulations convention).
Their phone number is 602-945-0721; Fax 602-946-4703. Rooms may not be available
after March 12th, 1996, so reserve it now! Don't procrastinate! (Seriously, the
Safari is a prime Scottsdale resort, located across the street from the huge Fashion
Square mall and very close to Fifth Avenue/Old Town Scottsdale. This hotel fills up
very fast, so you don't want to wait any longer than you have to.)
You'll want to fly into the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. See you there!

Kill Desire: "Patience."
Many times I have lost warriors, and the manager claimed the KD was only five.
As if KD had anything to do with the death of my fighter. It was really the battle
axe to the head that killed him.
I was quite disturbed at the widespread belief that kill desire has something to
do with killing an opponent. But they have good reason to believe this: the
Duelmaster's Handbook definition of kill desire has a tendency to cast a "confusion
spell" on the reader to make them think that way. The wording is very misleading.
The name "kill desire" is also misleading. A more correct word would be "patience."
Yes, kill desire is actually how much patience your fighter had before taking a
shot. KD doesn't add damage or tell your fighter where to aim at.
Damage is calculated by weapon and strength. (Of course, favorite weapon also
affects damage.)
You let your warrior know where you want him to aim at by filling out the attack
locatioen boxes on the fight sheets.
Hit location and damage are the main two things that will kill warriors. HIt
locations to vital areas such as head, chest, and the abdomen repeated times increases
your chance to kill. The amount of damage inflicted to these vital areas also
increases your chance to kill an opponent.
As you see, none of this has anything to do with kill desire.
Now, I will tell you what kill desire, or patience, as I call it, actualy is.
If you run your wariror with an 8-10 KD, you're telling him to swing like a
drunken wildman. You'll see statements in his fights that say "swings wildly" or
other things to that effect. He is not waiting for a good opening. He is swinging at
everything! This is bad for several reasons.
With his KD that high, he is very easily dodged and parried. Also, he can be
feinted into bad dueling decisions as well.
I think that KD between 5-7 for offensive styles and 3-6 for defensive styles is
perfect.
You get a lot more hits with a 5-7 KD, and feint a lot less. But you also get
more kills in this range. Reason being, you're waiting for a good shot that is hard
to dodge or parry. The example I used earlier about the manager with the 5 KD and
battleaxe is the point I amk trying to make. If his warrior's KD was 10, my warrior
could have dodged or parried the attack and still be alive today. But since it was a
5 KD, he waited for a good shot that my warrior had trouble defending against, and
cleaved his head off! (Well, not literally.)
Defensive styles run about 3-6 KD. Defensive styles swing wildly a lot in the
beginning, but that is natural. They will get better. 3-4 KD, they still have a
tendency to let attacks go by. Of course, if you're scumming, go with a 1 KD.
In short, having an 8-10 KD means your warrior is doing all that swinging and
hitting less. Not to mention all the endurance he is burning up to no avail.
Any comments, you can diplo me.

Sir Jessie Jest

"Strikers R Us"
Greetings, everyone. It is I, Talon, again. I am very glad to see everyone
participating in the arena and sharing their thoughts on styles and strategies. This
turn I will take on the striking attack style, which is certainly one of my favorites.
I believe the striker is one of the easiest styles to run, and one in which no
team should be without. A high-powered striker can diversify and empower your team.
A well run striker can beat any other style, poeriod, at any level in regular
Duelmasters. In arenas where scum TPs are rampant, strikers are just the answer as
they can attack for up to 12 minutes or more. Strikers are versatile. They can do
exceptional with a dagger as a weapon or with a halbard. They can do well with no
armor or with plate armor.
Stats:
Biff Primal Solid Perfect
ST 5-21 9-17 13 15
CN 3+ 3+ 6 3
SZ 9-21 3-17 9 5
WT 3-17 17 + 17 21
WL 9-17 13 + 17 15
SP 5+ 5-13 9 8
DF 9+ 9-17 13 17
With the way I design strikers, there are essentially two strikers that evolve.
The BIFF and the PRIMAL. The Biff striker is typically one that is not looking long-
term, but one which I want to run and have fun with. With this striker, I try to have
one stat (wit, will, or deftness) which is extraordinary, one which is average, and
the other ends up being at some non-normal level. Some examples of the Biff are: 10-
10-11-4-17-17-15, 7-11-17-17-11-6-15, 9-5-14-17-11-13-15, 4-8-17-15-13-10-17, and 21-
3-15-21-5-8-11. With these warriors, the emphasis is on having fun and learning more
about the style.
The Primal is essentially a Primus-quality warrior. In this category, the
striker will be designed with stats that most other managers will gasp, "OH MY, WHY
DID YOU MAKE HIM A STRIKER?" It is also the warrior that will be Duelmaster for 8
straight turns and will go to ADM with a 16-4-2 record, with 4 Masters and an Ad Ex.
The key here is to create a warrior with AT LEAST a 17 wit and 15 deftness, along with
a 13+ will and who will do normal damage or better. The goal with the Primal is a 21
wit and 17 deftness, because this will ensure a great warrior.
Weapons and Armor: As for weapons, the best striking weapons that I have found
and used as the dagger, epee, scimitar, broadword, quarterstaff, greatsword,
longsword, war hammer, and sometimes the short spear. I don't run my strikers with
shields or off-hand weapons, as it takes awawy from their attack. The heaviest armor
I will use is padded leather. Always wear a steel cap or a helm.
Strategy (general):
Min. 1 2 3 4 5 6+ Desp
OE 10 8 6 6 6 5 5
AL 10 5 4 2 2 1 8
KD 6 8 6 6 6 5 5
attack arms/legs/head -- take your pick
protect arms/legs/head -- take your pick
off tactic decise, slash, bash, depending on weapon
def tactic response is best; try dodge though.
With this strategy, a striker with a normal endurance should fight for eight
minutes as a scum TP and come out on top, outrageously victorious. Just match your
weapon with your tactic and only use the tactics in minute one or desperation.
If you have any further questions on this or any other style, feel free to diplo
me.
Talon, mgr. Eagle's Claw
