WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
Fellow Defenders of the Gate, hear me! I am off to assault the enemy with my
wits and my blade for the next six months. I plan on gathering together a band of
warriors to go with me. We shall be called "The Companions," and our task shall be to
blunt the waves of demons at their source. Any who dare may join. This turn (turn 2)
I shall scout ahead. Thereafter, we plunge into the unknown. Who will heed my call?

Hello managers. Hope everyone was looking forward to Gateway as much as I am.
Frankly my expectations are high. I want to see the Cockroach as developed as Gypsy
Moth is now. In honesty I cannot claim the Cockroach is better than second tier, but
with seven more strength, ten more speed and two more defense to train he might be as
tough as the Gypsy Moth is now. Most of all I am hoping the Cockroach can raise his
damage above "good."
With my high expectations I was expecting the Gateway monsters to be very tough,
with the top eleven going 50% versus the gate. Now most of us in Gateway know each
other, and I doubt that Jimmy the Hand or Char$(3008) are on anyone's top ten warrior
list. If these journeymen can score on kills versus the Gate, it will be a walkover
for Gypsy Moth and the rest of the round ten crew.
So here is Doc LeGrand's vote for raising the Gateway Monster abilities. If I
were going to design monsters, I would average the skill levels for the last
tournament TVs, and give the monsters huge physical characteristics. Triple
hitpoints, unlimited endurance and big, big, damage. This way the top end warriors
would have to wear down the Gateway monsters, avoiding those huge counterattacks.
Eventually, when we have learned our extra 30 skills we will gain a skill edge on the
monsters, but forever behind on physical attributes. Something long the lines of
Gypsy Moth knocks down Mondo Gatebeast, delivers a dozen critical attacks, gets
exhausted and loses in minute six.
And those are my expectations.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Hail and Greetings!
Although they told me that this place would allow you lunkheads to actually learn
something new...I don't think I actually believed it could be true until I saw it with
my own eyes! Wow! I havn't seen so much sword swishing and shield smackin' on the
practice field since the days of my youth when the Osksi lords used to roll into
Mordant to get their clocks punched by a few of the local boys. Man, those Osksi
lords sure could put on airs (and any of you from Osksi that want to be offended, too
bad, take out your frustrations in the arena). One of my informants even told me that
Donny has gotten a local trainer (a weird lizard looking guy) and is trying to figure
out how to incorporate a feinted tail lash into his repetoire. I guess it isn't
working out too well yet -- but I'm sure that the girls back home would have loved to
watch him practice (shake that tush Donny!). Actually, if you want to know the true
story, I hear that Donatello's new trainer was secretly supplied from Doc LeGrand's
labs (those failed experiments have to go somewhere, you know). I guess the Doc
figures that the longer he can keep Donny working on impossible moves the better the
chance that his warriors will catch up.
I just got back from the hospital where Char$ is recovering from being ahhhhmmm,
killed, at the Gate. Look Char$, just because I congratulated you last week on your
Gate victory doesn't mean that you had to be a tough guy and go try it again. Not all
the chaos creatures are wimps, you know. Reading over some mail that I intercepted,
it seems that some managers feel that their warriors are so tough that they could
NEVER be defeated at the Gate. I'm sure Sheila will be glad to learn that her fears
are unjustified. Tell you what. Any of you tough enough to go three straight rounds
at the Gate without being defeated, I'll buy you a beer. Of course they don't have
any beer around this place (hint, hint) so you'll have to wait to collect from me the
next time Sheila crosses us back to Alastari for a tournament. Of course, I'm not too
worried about having to pay up -- from what I see, you guys are treating this like
some kind of vacation (with a few notable exceptions like Vengeance).
All hail to Hangover of Abounding Agony for his rise to the top job here. Let's
raise our cups of banana juice to this, our new Gate Commander. Enjoy it while you
can, Hangover, there are a lot of tough fruit pickers below you who would like to take
your job. I hate banana juice, ya know. Could someone please figure out a way to at
least ferment this stuff?
Dark Guardian, et al, have taken an early lead in the rankings with Doc LeGrand not
far behind. Personally, my money is still on teams like Lunatic Fringe, Anime
Legends, and the Addams Family. Hey, just give 'em a chance to work into it!
Well, it looks like my time is up. I've got an appointment with a certain
"associate" who tells me that there may be a way for certain "persons" (female) and
"goods" (beer) to be deliverd to my apartments if the price is right. If his story
turns out to be true... you can bet that I'm gonna be in business as his partner
before the week is out! What if he doesn't want a partner? Well, they say that the
jungle outside the Keep can be a very lonely place to find oneself bound, gagged, and
left to oneself in -- especially when the local flaura and fauna decides to take an
interest in you.

I am trying to locate a copy of a computer game called CELTIC TALES: BALOR OF THE EVIL
EYE, IBM version. (I do't know the neame of the company behind the game.) If anyone
has a copy of this game and would care to sell it, is tired of the game and would like
to give it to me (yeah, right), or knows where I might be able to get a copy of the

LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS
Within the Gateway:
CHAR$(3008) (1-3008) (74-59-1,2) of TEAM$(150) entered into the Gateway and sought
out a creature of Chaos to battle. The second day in he came upon a FIRE LIZARD.
CHAR$(3008) fought bravely, battling the fearsome FIRE LIZARD for a full 4 minutes,
but finally the FIRE LIZARD gained an advantage, and CHAR$(3008) was slain upon the
heated jungle floor. He was rescued and returned to the Keep by other Protectors.
VENGEANCE (9-2052) (110-29-3,23) of ANGELS OF PAIN entered into the Gateway in search
of a vile monster of Chaos and there he faced TKOZIQUE, a fiercesome creature shrouded
in shadow with venomous talons. There in the darkness VENGEANCE battled the creature
TKOZIQUE and in one minute destroyed this creature of Chaos, who was dragged back to
the Temple of Tino-Tiklan.
LOUIS (30-1370) (75-74-2,59) of THE DAMNED ventured forth into the Gateway seeking to
defend the keep, and there faced a FIRE LIZARD. For two minutes did the Protector
battle the FIRE LIZARD in the steamy jungle before LOUIS emerged victorious. The
LIZARD's body was devoured by other beasts of the jungle.
SHAWN THORNTON (29-1359) (75-80-4,58) of PUT UP YOUR DUKES walked stoically into
the Gateway and there found himself face to face with ZEXI, JAGUAR PRIEST. The JAGUAR
PRIEST bared his fangs and attacked the ill-prepared Protector who hastily threw up
his weapons to defend himself. For two minutes did SHAWN THORNTON battle ZEXI before
the Lord Protector was slain. Fellow Protectors returned his body to the Keep.
BARIUM (53-378) (72-60-1,68) of CHEMICALS went into the Gateway and there for two days
sought a creature of Chaos, until he had very nearly reached the Temple of Xuquilatl
itself, and there on the stones he battled KAKAKIZ. For two minutes did he fiercely
fight, until the Temple Guard, KAKAKIZ, was slain. Its body was returned to the
Temple by several slithering creatures.

Guess what? The Superbowl is going to be in Tempe next year! And no, we're not
holding the Face-to-Face on the same weekend! As a matter of fact, we can't even hold
our F-t-F anywhere in town during the months of January through March without room
rates rising above $125 per night. (And I figured you didn't want that.) So next
year we're going to switch our Winter F-t-F with the Mail-in, making it a Winter Mail-
in and a Spring F-t-F. (Confused yet?)
In addition, we're going to be holding the F-t-F in conjunction with Riallicon,
which is a local gaming convention. Rumor has it that there will be speakers and a
Magic the Gathering (tm) tournament, in addition to other stuff. And all of you Face-
to-Face attendees will get a Riallicon badge, so you can attend the other events and
gaming going on for free!
The dates will be April 12th-14th, Friday through Sunday. It'll be at the Safari
Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona (4611 N Scottsdale Rd). Room rates are $85.00 per
night, single/double occupancy, $10 for each additional guest, $120 for a suite (has
stove and mini refrigerator). (They're very strict about all guests being registered,
and will kick everyone out of the room if they catch unregistered people sleeping in
the rooms. Please don't get us in trouble!) The rooms are blocked, so you can call
to reserve your room (tell them you're with the Reality Simulations convention).

after March 12th, 1996, so reserve it now! Don't procrastinate! (Seriously, the
Safari is a prime Scottsdale resort, located across the street from the huge Fashion
Square mall and very close to Fifth Avenue/Old Town Scottsdale. This hotel fills up
very fast, so you don't want to wait any longer than you have to.)

THE ULTIMATE ROLL-UP
Well, after a year and a half of gaming, I've had a chance to see a lot of
opinions on the best rollup for different styles. While there are a few differences,
there are more agreements. From all this data, I've tried to put together what I
would call the ultimate rollup. Now, a lot of you are scratching your heads and
asking what good it is to even theorize about something there is no control over.
Well, this is true, but my hope is that this may give some of the newcomers some
pointer regarding the different attributes and how they work in regards to the
different styles, and the game in general.
To begin with, the one stat you have no control over is size, so this is going to
define what route you take with your character. A size of 9 lets you use any of the
weaponry. However, a factor to consider is defensive ability. Larger characters are
at a deficit to their defense, smaller ones avoid blows better. Again, 6-12 is
probably a good range, depending on strength, for purposes of damage. Make your large
characters hard hitting offensives, your smaller ones speedy defensives.
Constitution is your one attribute that you can train without burning up skills.
For this reason, if your size isn't your even numbered stat, make this one even. As
seasoned managers will tell us newbies, the skill break points are based on the odd
numbers (except 19), and this is especially important with wit, deftness and speed. A
good level for con in 8, so that you haven't lost a lot of points in the rollup, but
are within range for any of the "high-burn" styles. Most managers will tell you not
to add here, and from my limited experience, con is not nearly as important as will
when it comes to lasting in a fight.
A stat most managers will also agree is of less importance, and you want to be
reasonably low on the rollup is speed. If you get something around 5, you're doing
good. Granted, this will be a little low for some of your real speed demons, like
par-rips or what some have recommended for strikers, but again, with a 5, you've got
the option of using the points elsewhere, but are still within range of the average
suggested levels for most styles.
Strength is another one you don't want to have a lot of points invested in
initially. Something around 9 is good. This puts you in range for any weapon except
the halbard, which needs a 17. This, like size, is going to define where you go with
the character. Low strength and size, you're probably going to want to go defensive,
big and strong, powerful offensives. Strength and size that equal around 21 will
probably give you good damage with a blow, and you can probably go as low as around 17
before you start getting hosed on damage.
Your three most important stats are wit, will and deftness. From what I can see,
you really don't want to go any lower than 11 with any of these stats, though some
"special teamers" can get away with less. Optimal would be 13, though like with the
suggested speed, this is going to limit you to 17 as a functional point break. Some
styles can really benefit from higher wit, some from higher will, but since the thrust
of this article is the ultimate, all purpose rollup, 13 for these three works well.
So, putting this all together we get; 9-8-9-13-13-5-13. With this rollup, you
can make a functional... not great, maybe not even particularly good... character of
any style. To make it a lunger; 13-10-9-15-15-7-15. This may be a little slow and
lack some of the con some managers like. To make a slasher; 9-12-9-15-13-11-15,
though some have suggested less speed and more will. For a basher; 15-14-9-13-17-5-
11, and this can work as a scum or as a truly functional basher, again, able to use
anything except a halbard. A striker; 13-10-9-15-15-11-11, though some may have
sought more speed for this style, and a little more deftness wouldn't hurt. As a Wall
of Steele; 11-10-9-15-19-5-15, and though 19 in will won't give you anymore skills
than 17, this is one case where every little point can help, and some argue that this
much deftness isn't needed, and the points might be better used in wit.
Now, just as this rollup may be a little on the small side for some of your
offensives, it is also a little large for most of your defensives. But, continuing
on, to make an aimed blow artist out of this, you might try; 9-12-9-17-17-5-15. As a
total parry; 11-16-9-13-19-5-11 and if he's smaller, give him a few more points of
deft for a higher parry. Though big, slow and dull for a truly marvelous parry
riposte, a workable one might be; 9-8-9-17-13-11-17. As a parry striker; 11-10-9-15-
15-9-15, though again, smaller with more wit might be nice, or more con, since they
tend to take a few hits. Finally, as a parry lunge; 13-10-9-15-15-7-15. Here you
might want to add some more wit and will, but if you want to use the long spear, you
really shouldn't go any smaller or weaker.
I hope this helps some of the new players get a start on understanding the stats
and how they operate. I really can't take too much credit for this, since it is
pretty much just taking an averaging of all the numerous articles I've read from other
managers on specific styles. Since I have too much time on my hands, I came up with
