RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Hail and well met!
I've noticed that ever since I broke out the last case of my private reserve of
Mordant Dragonbreath ale, the number of friends I have amongst the likes of you sword
swishers has increased dramatically. I felt I had to break open the case for the
occassion of Barium's funeral (and the follow-up resurrection party). It seems that
Barium was anxious to take me up on my beer challenge and try for a second victory
over the beasts within the chaos gate. Unfortunately for him, the Jaguar Warrior he
met there had different ideas. Sorry Barium! Back to square one, as they say. I
hope the Dragonbreath at least made up for some of your agonies (I'm told that dying
is actually a quite painful process). As for the rest of you warriors who heeded
Sheila's call to arms and made a stands at the Gate, I offer honour to your names (and
tincture of iodine for your bruises).
What's this I hear about all the whining and moaning about the lack of proper
management and letters from home? Listen. While most of you Happy-go-lucky
tambourine men may have rocks in your head instead of brains, at this stage of your
careers I think you can manage yourselves. I mean, you don't really expect that any
of the managers would be stupid enough to travel through the gate with us? No, if
they were that stupid, then they would have become gladiators themselves instead of
managers (in which case they probably would have died years ago, right)? So let's
have no more talk about the people we left behind in Alastari, unless its to talk
about wenches, a subject I am always interested in discussing, and perhaps a few
occassional words about the favorite pets we may never see again, etc. Heck, before
we left I managed to grab a final pint with Scrag and the Neon Necromancer and from
what they were saying... well I hate to break this to you, they were pretty much glad
to see their guys go through the gate. I mean, think about it. It must be pretty
intimidating for them to be constantly hanging around with guys that could chop them
into little tiny pieces using only their index finger. Have you ever though what an
inferiority complex this could lay on a manager? No, I didn't think so.
Hangover, I lift my tankard to you for your successful defense of the Gate
Commander's title. You are the top banana there is no doubt. Let's see if you can
"hang" on for yet another week. There was no lack for challengers in last week's
round of fights and I have this funny feeling that there will be plenty of Captains
lining up to try and take you on in the next round. Of course if you keep fighting in
the Gate then I guess your "suitors" will just have to remain unsatisfied...and so
long as you can keep winning...
This week was also notable for the contest between Swamp Rat and Golden. Ouch!
Talk about a loss of recognition for poor old Golden!
Uh-oh, it looks like one of my "associates" is headed this way and he doesn't
look to happy. Could it be that he has discovered the "loan" I took out of his pocket
this morning on my way down to the impromptu flea market that was running all weekend?
Whatever it is, I think I had best be on my way. Till next time remember, it is
unsportsmanlike to kick a man while he is down. And besides, a mace to the head is
usually much more effective.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
LeGrand -- I came here to fight beasts only. Frankly, it would make more sense for
you to complain about the fiends had you actually fought one. I'm sick of your
ceaseless lobbying for change. Shut your trap and wait a while before you continue to
complain. -- Vengeance
Those who dare -- I await you at the gaping chasm of sulpherous vapours which belch
forth from the enemy stronghold. Come prepared and we will move against the foul
foes. -- Vengeance
The Lunatic -- I am here, my friend. Come, allow one of your skilled veterans to join
me in the gate. Victory and courage! Death to the spawn of Darkness. -- Vengeance
Zontani Sharp-Eyes -- Welcome back to the spy reporting business. I'm pleased you
decided to come through the Gate with the rest of us idiots. -- Thing
All -- Here is a note Doc Steele gave me to post in the ads when I stepped through
<shiver> the Gate. -- Thing
"All -- Good luck to all Defenders of the Gate. I thought I saw Zontani Sharp-Eyes
step through with you, and if so, you are in for a treat at least in regard to the spy
report. Who knows, maybe you'll even have some fun without some of those annoying
Commission people around. Not naming any names, of course... Anyway, I'll see all you
brave souls in a few weeks for the tourney. -- Doc Steele, Warden of the Dark Circle."
Zontani -- Is there any way for our managers to communicate with us out here? I mean,
will there never be another personal ad from a manager in this arena or what? Come to
think of it, maybe that's not such a bad deal. -- Thing
Furious Impaler -- Doc tells me you are the one to beat in the long run. I was
curious to see what would happen between us right now for a point of reference. --
Thing, Paladin of the Dark Circle
Vengeance -- It'd be an honor for us to join your team. The Champion of Alastari
should captain us through the Gate to the enemy. We're yours to command. We hope we
don't do you poorly. -- Billy the Kid, Captain of the guilds Excellent 'Venture, The
Damned, Yellow Submarine, and Put Up Your Dukes
Noriel -- You comin' with us, or staying in the Keep? Uhm... no reason. Well, okay,
Jimi asked me to keep an eye on you, if you must know. Don't hold it against him,
tho', ya hear? -- Billy
Neon's equivalent in the Gate -- Yes, I thnk it stinks, too. From a roleplaying,
story perspective, I'm okay with not knowing, but from a game perspective, I surely
want to know what I have and will be committing warriors to for all eternity. Not
that I expect it to happen, but it would be nice. At the Face it might be interesting
to get together and see what everyone has learned about Gateway, but it looks like
Primus with monsters. As a mechanism to clean out the top of Primus, it seems to have
served its purpose. As the continuation and extention of the game to ease the boredom
of the upper echelon, I have a feeling it failed miserably. -- The Sentinel's
equivalent in the Gate
Dark One -- Hey, P-A-R-T-Y! Gateway rocks, eh? -- The Sentinel
Goldilocks -- It is painfully apparent that some things never change. :( -- Ragamoffyn
Peregrine Falcon -- It's been a long time since last we met upon the sands, and I, for
one, am glad you didn't have to hit me 15 times for extra damage to determine the
winner of the match. -- Doll
Lunatic -- The brain is fine, it's the, uhh, extremities that I'm worried about. :) --
Mannequin
P.S. You suck!!! Oh, yeah, Happy Holidays, as well!
Doc LeGrand -- I agree with your vision of the abilities of the Gateway monsters;
however, I would urge a little restraint in raising their abilities at this time. It
may be that the monsters are ranked similarly to the arena standins, according to
ability levels. Yes, Char$ and Jimmy each scored kills turn 1, yet neither would have
been ranked higher than Guardians of the Wall had they not succeeded. Who is to say
they will fare as well while in the ranks of the Captains of the Gate? Give it some
time to let the warrior rankings fall into place according to ability, rather than
number of wins, before requesting changes. That way, you'll have an easier time
determining exactly what changes to make. -- Mannequin
P.S. Personally, I would like to see the top eleven going 10% - 15% versus the gate.
That would make kills special and would act as a determent to the Louis', Shawn
Thorntons, Char$(3008)s, and Vengeances of Gateway.
Dealer -- I am enjoying Gateway so far, I would just think with a 25 wit and several
skill burns Barium would learn more than 2 in 2 fights. -- Moriarty
Zontani -- Is the position of Gate Commander lost if that warrior loses to a Chaos
Beast? -- Moriarty
The Dark One -- It was never said that you would be able to train stats beyond 25 in
Gateway. The only modification was learning 5 more skills in each area, and regaining
lost skills. -- Moriarty
Doc LeGrand -- I agree Chaos Beast should be tough, beating the Primus top 11 at least
50% of the time. However the beasts should be at different strengths at the different
warrior rank levels. The bottom 11 guys should be able to beat the bottom Chaos beast
about 50% of the time also. -- Moriarty
Zontani -- If you expect Lunatic Fringe to be in the top of the team rankings then you
have been drinking too much banana juice. -- Moriarty Warden of the Dark Circle
Zontani -- I killed a Chaos Beast and got no mention in your report, you obviously
need glasses to see quality. I am going for kill #2 this turn. -- Barium, Paladin of
the Dark Circle
DOC LEGRAND -- OH MY GODS, YOU ARE KICKIN'! Good show! -- Scrag
Doc LeG -- I think I get it. It's not going to be all that easy to kill the monsters.
I'll bet they get tougher as you beat them, somehow. -- Scrag
Doc LeG -- Are you possibly going to answer personal ads here for a change... *THIS IS
A TEST* -- Scrag
And Guardian -- HOW THE HELL ARE YOU DOING SO GOOD??? -- Scrag
Vengeance -- Hey, no thanks. I kinda gotta hang back and have a brewskie. -- Furious
Impaler, who after all these years has finally come to Gateway where he has
mysteriously learned to talk (and drink beer)
Could I be experiencing something here? What if Biff Frothingslosh to were return?
Perhaps a new glorious age will arise... -- Scrag
Eve -- Trained skills, learned 7 in 2 fights. I had learned about 98 before. --
Furious, 45 skills to go
Jake the Snake, Et Al -- Why don't I ever remember your manager name? Damn, I know
your ACTUAL name (kinda tough to forget that). But seriously, things not going too
well so far, eh? Stick with it, I'll bet Chaos Knight will once again be good (but
he'll never beat Furious, heh heh heh). -- Scrag
P.S. I just think I remembered "Grand Wizard of Dueling," right? How about GWOD. Has
kinda has an almighty sound to it.
All -- I just wanted you all to know, guys. If I know anything at all about this
game, I think Furious Impaler will eventually kick major tail. He can't wait to eat
turtle soup. -- Scrag

LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS
HANGOVER (29-638) (132-61-3,1) of ABOUNDING AGONY II fearlessly entered the Gate and
there found DAK, JAGUAR WARRIOR. For three minutes did this great Champion of the
Gate fight, and there in the jungle did slay the JAGUAR WARRIOR.
BILLY THE KID (13-1386) (94-64-3,43) of EXCELLENT 'VENTURE met the challenge of the
Gateway and there did battle JEZEX, JAGUAR PRIEST. The shapeshifter proved to be too
much for the Lord Protector, who was killed by the Jaguar Priest in a two-minute
battle.
VENGEANCE (9-2052) (111-29-4,24) of ANGELS OF PAIN saw his comrade-in-arms fall and
challenged JEZEX, JAGUAR PRIEST to deadly battle. VENGEANCE emerged the victor after
two minutes, aiding in bringing the fallen back to the Keep. JEZEX's body was
returned to the Temple of Xuquilatl.
SHAWN THORNTON (29-1359) (75-81-4,60) of PUT UP YOUR DUKES came swiftly up behind his
chosen Captains as he saw a JAGUAR WARRIOR coming through the tree-tops towards
the unwary Protectors. He drew the beast into battle, but alas, was slain in two
minutes under the teeth and claws of the JAGUAR WARRIOR.
SELLEQUE (5-456) (96-66-2,34) of BLACK BULLDOGS spread out from the phalanx of Lord
Protectors and found himself facing a PHASE DRAGON. The creature went into phase and
lured the unsuspecting champion to his doom, slaughtering him in less than a minute.
SELLEQUE's body was barely rescued in time.
FIRE DONBELOW (41-101) (94-86-2,40) of FIRE FIGHTERS found his team name all too
prophetic as he found himself face to face with a FIRE DRAGON within the Gate's
steaming jungles. Tho' FIRE DONBELOW fought bravely for five minutes, in the end
the creature slew him. He was rescued by fellow Lord Protectors.
JEREMY (17-1642) (80-63-3,56) of YELLOW SUBMARINE found himself seperated from his
fellows and there ZEI, JAGUAR WARRIOR found him and challenged him to deadly battle.
It was hardly a contest, as JEREMY was quickly put to death by the fearsome warrior,
his body hastily recovered by other Lord Protectors.
FERNDOK (60-607) (66-42-2,87) of UNDERDOGS saw one of his comrades fall to a JAGUAR
WARRIOR and hastened to enter into the fray in the defense of Keep and Ghea. Alas,
his bravery availed him not, and after two minutes the JAGUAR WARRIOR was licking
its teeth in anticipation of its meal. FERNDOK was rescued by other Lord Protectors.
TEETOTALER (38-326) (147-60-1,7) of MISCELLANEOUS II took up the challenge of the Gate
and entered the jungles of Chaos; there he found and faced a JAGUAR WARRIOR, with the
blood of a killed Lord Protector on its muzzle. The Lord Protector battled the JAGUAR
WARRIOR for four minutes and slew him in a frenzy of bloodlust.
GAMMENON (23-1670) (74-63-2,65) of CELESTIALS also entered into the battle with the
JAGUAR WARRIOR, hoping to avenge the death of his companions; unfortunately, the
JAGUAR WARRIOR, like its companions, thirsted for the blood of Lord Protectors,
and hastily slew GAMMENON in one minute. The Lord Protector was found and rescued by
Skek.
THUNDERBIRD (23-2317) (60-42-3,98) of BIRDS OF PREY entered the Gate behind several
of his comrades and was quickly seperated in the confusion of the battles. He found
himself face to face with JOJ, JAGUAR PRIEST. Without waiting for a challenge,
THUNDERBIRD dove into battle, and killed JOJ in three minutes. He did not wait to
see if the body was claimed.
LOUIS (30-1370) (76-74-3,62) of THE DAMNED saw an AIR DRAGON coming towards their
party and went to meet the challenge. For four minutes did LOUIS battle the AIR
DRAGON, and emerged the victor as he slew the beast in combat. The Lord Protectors
sheered off the head of the beast to bring back to the Keep.
SOLOMON (35-911) (73-54-1,67) of SHATTERED REALITY found himself facing a JAGUAR
WARRIOR as he entered the jungles in search of the Temples themselves. Though the
Lord Protector fought bravely, the JAGUAR's fangs proved too deadly to overpower,
and SOLOMON was killed in two minutes. His body was found and returned to the Keep
by other Lord Protectors.
THING (36-97) (61-55-0,99) of ADDAMS FAMILY, after several days of searching,
surprised a JAGUAR WARRIOR at its dinner. THING paused only a moment before diving
into battle, and fought bravely for four minutes before he was slaughtered by the
JAGUAR WARRIOR. Fortunately, the hungry beast was thwarted by the timely arrival
of Skek, out searching for missing Lord Protectors.
BARIUM (53-378) (73-60-2,71) of CHEMICALS seperated himself from the main group
of Lord Protectors as he delved deep into the hot, humid jungles; there he found
and challenged a JAGUAR WARRIOR. For two minutes he battled, but the beast was too
much for him. His body was found and rescued by other Lord Protectors.
FNORD (29-2244) (44-34-2,115) of THE DISCORDIANS set out through the Gate to find
a challenge and there fell upon a JAGUAR WARRIOR, who gave the Lord Protector a deadly
fight. Two minutes later, FNORD had been killed by the JAGUAR WARRIOR, and his body
was barely saved by fellow Lord Protectors.

Stimpy's Thoughts on Total Parries
part II
Well, when we last spoke I gave you a rundown on I feel TPs should be designed.
Now I will give you my ideas on how to run them.
First, you need to consider what type of warrior you now have. A total parry is
what its name suggests. Total defense. The idea around a TP is to concentrate on
defense first and utmost. Only when the situation arises will the TP decide to
attack. With this in mind NEVER run a TP with an offensive effort (OE) above 5. In
doing so you have just told your TP to do what it is that they weren't designed to do.
Go offensive. If you want to run your TP above 5, you should have made an offensive
styled warrior, NOT a TP. By using a high OE, you cause your TPO to ignore defense
and go offense. This results in numerous "flailing" and "wild" attacks. So don't do
it.
While running your TP, you may find that he tends to really turn on the offense
often. That is typical, typical of a warrior who favors initiative skills. This does
not mean that you should boost your OE. What is happening is thatone of your
warrior's favorite learns is initiative. So he/she will be naturally adept in
initiative. And remember that initiative is the skill that allows you to continuously
make attacks on your opponent. Since you TP decided to attack, you opponent should be
relatively worn down. So it will be hard for your opponent to steal that initiative
back from you. Hence the reason that your TP looks like an offensive killer. But
that's good. It means that you have a very dangerous warrior on your hands. High
endurance burning styles, look out!
I know, I know!!! There are managers out there still that believe in the
offensive TP and suggest using higher OE. That's all fine and dnady. Let those
managers do just that. I personally guarantee that if you run your TP with a low OE
like the style was designed to do, you'll win fights. Experiement with unorthodox
strategies when you get a better hang of the game.
Activity level (AL) is the variable in TP strategies. I would definitely begin
running a TP with a moderate/low AL. Try a 3 at frist. After a few fights you'll see
if your TP likes to dodge more or parry more. It should be quite obvious; your TP
will learn more skills in his "favorite" area. Chances are, though, if you TP has
received the statement: "avoiding rather than trading blows," or "relying on his speed
to stay out of danger," your TP would rather dodge than parry. And that's just fine.
Boost your AL to about a 4 or 5. If you choose to use the dodge tactic in defense,
use AL up to 7. Beyond that tends to hurt your warrior more than it helps.
So why not go with an AL of 7 all the time if your TP likes to dodge more than
parry, you might ask? That's simple; your TP may like to dodge more, BUT HE STILL
PARRIES. So you'll need to be less active to allow your TP that choice. With an AL
of 4-5, your warrior will dodge when it is more advantageous, then parry when it
isn't.
Kill desire varies greatly from warrior to warrior. To be on the safe side, I
always go low KD with my TPs, until they gain Expert in attack. After that point, I
may begin to experiment, seeing how my warrior reacts to various KDs. Generally, if
your warrior learns attack skills relatively well, then a higher KD won't inhibit them
at all. If this is the case, I believe that your warrior is not looking for landing
several blows to win the match (favoring initiative skills), but is instead looking to
land a few good blows (favoring attack skills). In the latter case, a moderate to
high KD may help. Keep in mind though that your TP is still defensively oriented. An
extremely high KD will cause any warrior to behave like a berserker, and may cause
your TP to make lots of bad attacks. With this in mind, stay below 7.
Now to place it all together...
Minute 1 2 3 4 5 6on Desp
OE 2 ------------------------ > varies
AL 2 ------------------------ > "
KD 2 ------------------------ > "
or
Minute 1 2 3 4 5 6on Desp
OE 2 ------------------------ > varies
AL 4 ------------------------ > "
KD 2 ------------------------ > "
These show my general strategies for parry and dodging oriented warriors,
respectively. Seldom do I use any tactics, unless I am making a challenge and wish my
warrior to behave differently to that challenge (i.e., using the dodge tactic against
a lunger). At that point I would refer to the paragraphs in the beginning to
customize that particular minute to fit the tactic.
Attack and protect locations are totally up to you. I like to protect the head
and body, while attacking the head, arms, and legs. This protects my vitals, yet can
allow my wariror to land blows on parts of the body that can cause a warrior to lose a
fight with the minimum number of hits.
Desperation is my opposite area. If I was relying on a low AL in the regular
minutes, I will boost it in desperation. While going vice versa if I had a high AL in
regular minutes.
Now the one tactic I haven't touched on is the riposte tactic. Occasionally your
TP will favor this tactic. When he does, I like to raise my OE to 3, sometimes 4, and
the AL to 4. If I use the riposte tactic, I will use 4-5 OE and a 3-5 AL. When these
numbers are any lower, your TP may husband from attacking in a riposte situation, in
favor of more defense.
I have found that these strategies work well whether your warrior fights as a
SCUM or skilled TP. If you remember from my last article, the difference between the
schools of thought are the amount of damage the warrior is willing/able to take.
Well, I hope that this has been informative for the newer players, and the older
ones, too. Good luck and see you on the sands.
