WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
To the Bold: It was a difficult challenge coming back from the dead a second
time. The first was hard enough, but this time I almost felt as if I belonged in the
Realm of Lost Souls. A more perilous and wearying journey I have never faced. Yet I
succeeded, though not, in fact, in time to detail my adventures in last cycle's
newsletter. Be glad of that, for it is not a cheerful tale.
More suited to the talk of taverns and the whispers of the wise was this latest
adventure there, in the darkest wilderness. YHet I am not wholly willing to list much
of our recent adventure, for the unholy rites of the vile Chaos Spawn as well as the
subtle powers of their dark leader are not for the squeamish. This, then, is what
came to pass in teh dark pits beneath the Dark Temple:
Creeping silently, we drew near to behold the ceremony the vile ones were
performing. Believing it at first to be one of their desecration rites, we were
unprepared for the horror which met our gaze. It was too much to resist--we burst
from cover and attacked. I must admit to not paying full attention to the exploits of
my fellow Companions, as my sole focus rested upon the High Priest of Chaos! In I
rushed, but he was ready, swinging his machete, he dealt me a mighty blow. Back I
staggered, certain for an instant that I was about to fall again. Regaining my wits,
I lunged into the attack, slicing and stabbing with wanton glee. Several times my
blows struck home, staggering the priest. Before he could call his minions to him, I
endxed his miserable existance, then wiped his blood on his tattered cloak.
Looking around, I saw that several of my fellows had fallen. Before
reinforcements could arrive, Teetotaler and I gathered up their remains and fled into
the jungle.

Greetings, all -- 'Tis I, Voo-Doo. For those of you who know Lord Xiang (Steve
Allain) and his wife Lady Xiang (Ursula) and even those managers who don't, on June
19th the birth of their first child occurred. This is a tremendous event that I would
like to share with you all as Lord & Lady Xiang are great friends of mine. After
sixteen grueling hours of labor (must be like waiting for your Duelmasters turns in
the mail eh?), a beautiful 8 lb 9 ounce baby girl was born to the name of Kyra. I
would just like to send my sincere congratulations to Lord & Lady Xiang and my best

LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS
1) TEETOTALER (38-326) (155-64-9,3) of MISCELLANEOUS II set forth into the Gate only
to be confronted by KILORRI, who challenged him immediately to battle. TEETOTALER
fought bravely for two minutes, but in the end was butchered by KILORRI. His body
was recovered by Skek.
2) REGGIE JACKSON (17-1339) (108-74-5,4) of JACKSON FIVE entered the Gateway and
after several hours searching came upon ZIZ, JAGUAR PRIEST. REGGIE JACKSON set to
battle with the chaos spawn, and there fought for two minutes before he was barely
slain by ZIZ, JAGUAR PRIEST. His body has not been found.
3) DANGEROUS (43-842) (86-77-2,30) of ENGINES OF DOOM bravely set forth into the
Gate and away from the safety of the Keep. He was nearing the Temple Xotichan, deep
in the heart of the jungle, when the horrible form of THE YTHRR came down on him.
DANGEROUS gave forth a cry of terror as the creature that was already getting songs
and stories of dread told of it fell on him, and in less than a minute, THE YTHRR
killed the valiant Lord Protector. His body was recovered by other Lord Protectors
some time later.
4) JEREMY (17-1642) (80-76-3,97) of YELLOW SUBMARINE took up the Gateway challenge
and, making his way into the jungle, came face-to-face with XIOZOROX, who set on him
with a fierce bloodthirst. In two minutes, JEREMY had been brutally slain by XIOZOROX.
5) SHAWN THORNTON (29-1359) (75-94-4,104) of PUT UP YOUR DUKES followed his teammate
into the jungle and was preparing to assist him when from the sky came the dreaded
QUETZIQUATL, who set on the hapless Lord Protector and slew him with fangs and
beak in less then one minute. Both bodies were barely recovered by Skek.
6) HAWK (46-554) (90-84-0,61) of DEADLY SHADOWS TV challenged
3066 (14-1351) (78-52-1,20) of NOMADS.
HAWK was bested by 3066 in a crowd pleasing 2 minute bloody match.
7) FURIOUS IMPALER (37-762) (70-32-1,33) of KILL HUMANOIDS TV challenged
SGT SLAUGHTER (7-541) (152-59-0,41) of DEATH MASTERS.
FURIOUS IMPALER overpowered SGT SLAUGHTER in a 1 minute uneven melee.

The Real Offensive Total Parry
How many of you run total parry warriors? Raise your hands. Whoa, that's a lot!
Now how many of you have run long term potential ofensive total parries? Uh huh,
that's what I thought, a lot less of you actually have. My name is Blackstorm and
I'll show you an example or two for the O.T.P. The main differnce between "scum" TP's
and "offensive" TP's are these: Scum have massive amounts of CN, WL and ST. They
tend to stand around getting pounded until their opponents drop. In theory, the scum
wins a lot at first, but sucks later in his career (but not always!). The offensive
version is quick, strong, and you can parry very well. Combine that with a medium
based attack rating and you've got it all. The main thing to remember when making
"offensives" is to stay away from extremely high attributes (21). The reason being is
that the distribution of points in several domains is more important than having that
beautiful 21 in WL and WT. Here's a list of some other manager's offensive total
parries and my best.

There are several major differences between the three: 1) My guy does good
damage. 2) He's coordinated without train. 3) More hit points. 4) He can use every
single weapon suited to him. I'll explain a bit below.
ST 13: Coupled with a 9 size almost guarentees good damage and it helps endurance.
CN 12: This allows him to handle a couple of hits and it balances well with the 13
strength and will for endurance.
SZ 9: He's hard to hit, can use weapons which need 9 and his damage rating is also
better.
WT 15: Great learns and it'll keep him competitive both in attack and defense.
WL 13: Keeps him aggressive without lopsiding it for 17 or 21. We want to be
exciting and unscummy. He rarely needs to go 10 minutes and if he does he'll still go
the distance.
SP 7: This isn't an important stat for TPs but it helps coordination and it'll give
him a few decise and init skills to boot.
DF 15: For his parry. It also gives him a bit of precision while attacking. You
could reverse SP and DF by 2 points (SP-5, DF-17) without messing him up. Remember
SP+DF=21.
Strategy: They are a special breed and require a little experimenting like ABs. I
could recommend 2-3-2 or 2-4-2, responsiveness vs. steroid types like ST, SL, BA, and
PS. Then open up in minutes 3 or 4 at 10-8-10-L, 6-4-6-L, or even 10-10-10
decisiveness in desperation. However he will respond best to the lunge, parry,
response and dodge the best. And like I said, experiment and try new strategies.
Weapons and armor; use ARM or ASM with it or FH. The LO, SC, and EP are good vs.
light and medium. The QS is also a good weapon for the heavier armor (TP's don't
really use heavier weapons well.) Tell me what you think.

The Arcane Slasher
I love the Slashing Style! Slashers are finesse artists, but they're much more
aggressive than your aimed-blow. Well-designed slashers are formidable opponents;
they are as ready to defend as to attack, though they prefer the latter. Fate has
been to kind to this style, perhaps too kind. Even a badly-designed slasher may do
well in basic, prompting many well-intentioned managers to promote questionable set-
ups as "the slasher ideal." After reading another `Eureka!' article, I am compelled
to add my 2 cents. I've learned how to design great slashers, and I'd like to pass on
my ideas to the rest of Alastari. I can't tell you how to keep them alive (in four
years I've only gotten one to ADM) but I can outline guidelines for creating a spooky
character that will win for you--until they die or get to ADM. Just remember that
decent opportunities to make a slasher aren't very common!
WT, WL, & DF--15 pts each at least. Period. If you don't have it, you don't
have a great slasher. Believe me, you can't afford to skimp anything here!
ST--Anything from 7-11 is fine. The smaller the character the higher the number,
but anything with a +9 size can get by with a 7ST. For light armor use an epee, for
anything heavier use a pair of hatchets, a scimitar, or a broadsword, depending on ST.
CN & SP--Ideally, both are single-digit; if your con is high you're probably
looking at a WASTE. Whatever else you do, don't add them.
SZ--Since this is something we can't change anyway, don't worry about it. The
bigger they are the less points to spread around to other areas, though.
My slashers come up with the best overviews when I follow these guidelines. Most
earn at least four wit statements;l about 50% either start out with an Expert or two,
or they pick them up within a couple of skills. One of my very best died in a
tourney: 6-3-11-15-51-11-17. He stareted out doing good damage; picked up Experts in
att, init, def, and rip. in two skills or less. This is an extreme example, but it
sems to me that the well-designed slasher gets more than their fair share of luck on
their overview. I've run one a lot worse that did fairly well--a winning record,
until he was killed by a veteran lunger: 11-7-14-15-15-7-15, good bases in attack and
init, four wit statements, great damage.
Running then?
Start out with an offensive effort of 10, and never let the OE drop below 7. How
quick you taper down depends on the endurance rating. Slashers burn endurance very
quickly; if you don't have good endurance drop right away from 10 to 7 and leave it
there unless desperate, then go back to 10. Otherwise try 10, then 9, then 7.
Remember, these are aggressive beasts; keep'em on the offensive!
Keep the activity level fairly low except in the very beginning, whn you should
be running 10. Then drop to 5 or 6, then 3 or 4m then 1. Go back up to 7 or 10 in
desperation.
Match your kill desire to your offensive effort, always.
Summary: 10-10-10, 9-5-9*, 7-3-7, 7-1-7 across. Desperation: 10-10-10 or 10-7-
10.
Avoid armor unless you MUST, but no higher than ARM and H.
Don't use tactics--they seem to inhibit the slasher's ability to riposte and
respond well to their opponent. Exception: to take out scum pick the heaviest weapon
your character can lift and use the slash tactic--go for the legs or the arms: 7-1-7.
Slash all the way!
These `rules' have worked for me. The biggest problem I've had is that my
slashers rise too high too quickly. Within five or six fights they're fighting
warriors with 15 fights' experience. So be forewarned; give them sometime off every
few turns so that they won't get clobbered by some old-timer looking for an easy win!

The Perfect Warrior - Part 4

"Conclusion - Recognizing a Lucky Warrior"
In part 3 of this article, we decided that the "perfect" design for the "perfect"
parry-lunge is 9-8-13-17-21-3-13. That's the best I can come up with. And that's all
well and good, but unfortunately we're not done yet. You could send in the exact set
up of stats and you STILL may never be able to beat Donatello or Vengeance. Remember
what I said before, Fred also has to get LUCKY. And I'm not talking about his damage
roll, or endurance, or anything silly like that. All of that nonsense will be taken
care of with time. What is really important now gets right back to basics... starting
ratings. More specifically, his ratings in attack, defense, and parry.
As for attack, I really want to start with EXPERT here (16 skills). This will
give Fred an ultimate attack of 62 skills (probably about the same as Donatello).
This is very important. Now I'm not saying that I would send Fred off to the DA if he
should happen to start with 14 attack skills. What I am saying is that I would just
never to expect him to beat Donatello. On the other hand, defense and parry are less
important, but the numbers here probably won't vary as much anyway. I'd like to see
the two defensive ratings add up to at least 20 skills total, suck as 10 defense (6
from expert), 10 parry... 9 defense... 11 parry... whatever.
Of course, Fred doesn't actually need to have those exact set of stats. Fred's
starting luck is what's ultimately important. I just feel that that specific set of
stats is the best way to accomplish this goal (I wonder how close those stats are to
Donatello???). Here are some other design skeletons that I feel should work well...

Remember, however, however, that you will need to adjust what to expect for
starting skills if your warrior starts with different stats than I have suggested.
Say, for example, that your warrior starts with the 17 wit, 21 will, but he only has a
7 deftness. This guy probably does not have as good as chance to be "lucky," but you
never know. If he starts 4 skills lower in all three areas (attack, parry, and
defense), he will ultimately still be as good; it just may take him a little longer to
get there.
If you learn one thing from this article, remember this... stats are incredinly
overrated, and luck is incredibly underrated. Most managers believe they can tell how
good a warrior is by looking at his stats. I now realize that there is absolutely no
way to really figure out how good a warrior is unless you run it (and find out its
initial skills).
I am currently running two wall-of-steel warriors in Darkholm. One is
classically considered a "good" warrior, the other is not. The so called "good"
warrior started 12-10-6-17-5-17, the other 13-13-12-17-3-9. Almost all managers would
salivate over the first warrior, and discount the second as being mediocre and may
even send him to the Dark Arena. But this would have been a grievous error that I am
very happy I did not make. The warrior started with 10 defense while the second
started with only 3, but this 7 skill difference will only be a difference of one or
to skills ultimately. As for parry, the first started with 11 skills while the second
started with 8. This means after training all the way up for the small difference in
defense. The big difference is in attack. The first started at 14 while the second
started at 12. In the long run, the second will be three skils higher! As a side
note as of this writing is 31-15-1. Not bad, but the other guy is 30-7-0! Now who
did you say is better? Class dismissed.
