Reflections by the The Gate Commander
I'd like to thank Carapace for finally letting Christine take a win over Tagan.
Last time, three shots and a knockdown weren't enough to draw the win, this time going
desperate, three shots and two knockdowns were enough to take the title, Christine's
first since way back in March 1988.
But having reached the top of the rankings in the top arena in the land, there
really is nothing left to accomplish on the sands, so Christine will be retiring from
arena play. The slow down in training in ADM combined with 28 blown skills originally
brought me to the conclusion that I would retire her at 100 wins, the Primus Throne,
or a Primus TC. The opening of Gateway changed that, and despite having learned some
30-35 skills since the advent of Gateway, I will now only be running Christine in
tournaments, unless of course, something else is created in this game a few years down
the road. Fighting to the death against NPCs just doesn't cut it. Hopefully, with
another 20 skills and 10 skill yielding stat raises, Christine will return to the
upper ranks of the Gateway tournament, but until then, hopefully the training will not
slow down too much.

Looking at that, there's little wonder why I've long been against the whole
concept of a manager's warriors continuing on under a new player after the old player
drops out of the game. Let's see... 3-11 (2-7) against hand me downs, 5-4 (5-9)
against Original owner warriors. The most amusing thing is retiring with a perfect
arena record against Donatello, I think I'll just consider all those tourney fights as
exhibition matches so they don't really count.

RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Salutations to the victorious! (And lumps to those not-so.) Yes, it is I, Zontani
Sharp Eyes, the most celebrated (or at least the most inebriated) Spymaster in all of
Gateway!
Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a "Style" Master? I mean its one thing to
be tough and to win fights and all--but how to do so with that certain pizazz, that
ineffable panache that will catapult you to the heights of style as well as to the top
of the arena rankings? To answer this question I recently held a fashion show and
invited all of the arena's top wariors to participate as runway models. I then sat
back and carefully observed their technique in this unique new setting. Some warriors
bounced while others flounced, but from each I was able to drawn up certain
conclusions about their philosophy of style which I have tried to sum up in a simple
phrase. If the warriors in question wish to expound at greater length about their
chosen style in the personal ads, all the better, but here are my summations:
Falstaff (Parry Lunge) -- "It's okay to Let the other guy have his say, but
then make YOUR point".
Vengeance (Lunging) -- "Whatever you do, stick with it!"
Delbaeth (Wall of Steel) -- "Dazzle them with Flash, then turn them into
Hash!"
Opus (Striking) -- "Keep it simple, but never waste time in making your
impression."
Tawny (Aimed Blow) -- "It's not what you wear. It's where and how you wear
it."
Leonardo (Parry-Strike) -- "Relax. Just wear it."
Nameless Took (Total Parry) -- "Keep your garters high and your neckline
low."
Ta'ra (Parry-Riposte) -- "Accept the fashion statements of others
graciously, but be prepared to turn their offerings to your own advantage.
Is everyone wearing green? Perhaps you should wear puce."
Marionette (Slashing) -- "If what you're wearing doesn't cut them into
ribbons and have them dancing to your tune, perhaps a new cologne?"
Louis (Bashing) -- "The early critic gets the burn. Trash their look before
they trash yours."
Glean from this what you will. Just keep in mind what sort of people would go around
wanting and expecting everyone to call them "Master". And no, I don't plan to do a
follow up study of the style masters' sex lives.

CONSTITUTION
One the major assets to a warriors survival is his constitution. Sometimes CON
is overlooked in order to maxiumize other attributes that give extra starting skills.
This is okay depending what style is selected for the warrior in question. I usually
make a warrior with 9 or less CON an offensive style and higher than that a defensive
style as a rule of thumb. But, it really depends on the rest of the stats as for the
final verdict on which style he will actually become.
CON effects three things: Hit points, endurance, and how much weight you can
carry. Endurance and weight allowance are also effected by strength as well as CON.
The endurance formula is E = (ST+CN)WL and also has a chart of breakpoints that is
covered in another one of my articles. Weight allowance is also a large chart that is
beyond the scope of this article, but can be found in many places.
CON's main effect is HIT POINTS or the amount of damage a warrior can take before
he gives up or is killed. Defensive styles need more than offensive styles do in the
beginning to survive Basic. Low con for offensive styles is OK for basic but really
hinders a warrior's performance in Advanced Duelmasters.
Hit points are determine by this formula: CON x 2 modifed by the following
charts.
