WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
TO THE BOLD:
The air within the cavern was cool and clammy. The torches on the walls
flickered from the drafts, casting eerie shadows. Once again we had plunged deep into
the Chaos Labyrinth, anxious to meet the enemy. Our advance was reckless and now I
was alone. Lost in the deep subterranean world. A dark and scarcely lit hell of
caverns and twisting passages, inhabited by the Gate's most foul horrors. We had met
the enemy in a massive cavern, its ceiling masked by the smoke of burning cauldrons.
The beasts were feeding on flesh, the stench was unbearble. We caught them unaware
and charged. They upturned the giant pots, dousing us with burning oil. We slew many
before a squad of Jaguar Warriors came racing into the cavern. That was when I had
been cut off from the Companions and been forced to flee down a winding side passage.
There were no torches there, I had to feel my way, hoping that my next step would not
cast me into a pitfall or chasm. When I had traveled for more than an hour, I finally
reached light. It was not the light from the three suns of Gateway. It was yet
another cavern, smaller than the previous, yet better lit.
That is where I came upon Jok. A creature so terrible, I still shudder at the
thought of her. She stood, a tower of sinewy muscle, her glossy yellow pupils glaring
down upon me with a lean and hungry stare. Her greenish scales were moist and her
thick leather tunic stank of offal. A pair of notched and battered machetes sprouted
from her three-fingers claws, dull and rusted, yet still deadly. My grip tightened
around the hilt of my scimitar and I lunged at her with my full force behind the
attack. Her forked tongue withdrew behind rotted fangs as she fended off the blow.
With startling agility for such a giant, she quickly struck back. But I was ready and
easily parried the speeding machete blade, inches from my larynx. The force of the
attack was so great that my steel broke asunder, leaving me weaponless before the
beast. To my terror, she burst into a shrill laughter which echoed through the deep.
She leapt headlong at me, hoping to finish me before I could unsheath the weapon
strapped across my back. My hand grasped the hilt and I drew the blade forth. Jok
sliced at me with her machete as I drew the scimitar, narrowly missing my left leg.
She was overextended and I fired back a deadly attack, my battle cry howling from my
lips. She smiled and easily eluded the blow, riposting almost immediately with a
breathtaking attack. The blade sliced open my stomach and I recoiled, my hand over
the wound. I could feel blood and innards sliding from my body. Her follow up attack
I managed to fend off, but barely in time. I knew that I stood before a truly evil
power, far superior in combat than the average Jaguar Warrior or Air Lizard. For
several minutes we did battle, with neither side gaining a clear advantage. I felt
myself being worn down by the sheer strength of her onslaught. I wondered if I
perished, Skek would find and recover me, so deep within the Chaos Labyrinth. I never
saw the blade as it ripped through my stomach for a second time. Her screech was
hideous. Froth dripped from her thin lips and her eyes danced with glee. To my
utmost horror, she spoke in a raspy voice, "The Grey Witch cannot save you here." I
realized my plight and attempted to withdraw. But she was hard on my heels, moving
with astounding swiftness. I raced back toward the passage from which I had entered
this hell. But she caught me with ease, hewing me down as I retreated. The blade
sank deep into my chest, easily crushing and penetrating my breastplate. I fell to
one knee, parrying an attack as I dropped. I was well aware that the end was
imminent. She sliced off my ear on her next attack, as if to make my death slow. She
clashed her weapons together in trumph, her piercing laughter ripping through the
cavern. She buried the hilt through my mangled stomach. I choked, grasped the
machete protruding from my body and crumpled.
I awoke within the Keep, miraculously spirited forth by the phantom Skek. The
Lady had brought me back from the dark void once again. There would be more missions,
more expeditions into the Chaos Labyrinth. The Gate would remain forever closed. We
could not allow the enemy to pour its hordes into Alastari. Yet I wondered how long
we could hold the portal closed. Their numbers seemed endless, their powers great.
The Lady looked fatigued, perhaps worried at the growing might of the Chaos minions,
perhaps just strained from bringing me back once again. I lay there, wondering how
many lives I had left...
Lieutenant Teetotaler
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Greetings Warriors,
It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, your direct source for the latest news and gossip here at
the Gateway arena. Once again we must raise our cups to Falstaff, who reigns supreme
at the top of our arena rankings and presumably amongst more than a few of the now
merry wives in and about our fair community. In the words of the immortal bard, I
would have to say that all the talk that Falstaff is really a tibetan monk in disguise
is simply "Much Ado About Nothing." Or at least I should say, if monks behave like
him, where can I sign up?!?
This week in an effort to rub elbows with those that breathe a less rareified air than
the top ranked warriors, I went out amongst the "rank and file" to try and get some
perspective on the "View From Somewhere Below the Pinnacle". Here are a few
observations:
Take a guy like Jimmy the Hand of the Riftwar Masters, I hear he comes from a large
family that includes such siblings as Johny the Other Hand, Patsy the Eye, and Lefty
the Foot. Now how many fights would you win if you had only one arm and no legs? Not
many. Despite his 'hand-icap" Jimmy has a positive record and a winning attitude. Or
how about Billy the Kid? Here we have an arena filled with mindlessly brutal adults
and yet we expect children to compete on an equal basis. There ought to be some kind
of an age law prohibiting the exploitation of minors in the games. Don't you think?
Last but not least we must mention Goldilocks. Now here we have a fairy tale
character, a girl who wants little more from life than a good bowl of porridge, a
chance to sit by the fire and a nice warm bed. What is a girl like that doing
striving with swords in a charnel house of blood far removed from the forest and bears
of her native world? And so you see that while such warriors may not sit upon the
Pinnacle, given their circumstances and backgrounds they can not but be lauded for
their accomplishments and ongoing struggle in the face of adversity.
But enough of social philosophy, its time for me to be away to drink a well deserved
swamp ale. Until next we meet please remember that for every person who struggles
against the odds there is always someone else who would like to get even.
-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Abandon your homes and families. Give it all up. Run from your homelands and forget
your responsibilities to king and country. Come to Daiyla Kiv, DM 74, where the
streets are paved with gold and opportunity lies around every corner. She's a fair
town. They don't call her the Imperial City for nothing. Hell, it's good enough for
the Emperor.

A heartfelt thank you to all those managers who diplo'd NAIMT to tell me of your names
and regional affiliations and all. I'd list you by name, but that would make for too
long a post. <grin> Your time and input are greatly appreciated... everyone who
responded. To those that haven't, there's still time. ;) The FTF is still 3 weeks
away. Again, thank you. Good luck in the Tournament ALL! -- NAIMT, database
collector extraordinaire ;)
I recently won a resurrection prize at the last mail-in, and have decided to see what
the market value is. Are you interested? If so, diplo the Lizard King of Yo Ho Ho!
in DM 26. First offers will receive priority. If you care to e-mail your offer, my
address is warndt3605@aol.com.

Top 10 Things to Do to Have a Better FTF!
10. Have at least one meal that doesn't involve either McDonalds or Domino's Pizza.
Bonus points if that meal includes the use of utensils. (Double bonus points if you
already knew how to use utensils)
9. Recycle all those cover sheets and unwanted roll-ups into ammunition for the next
great paper ball fight! (And don't assume that because you don't have any ammo,
you're not in the game. When these things break out, ANYONE is a potential target!
Don't assume that I'm going to throw AROUND you to get to my target, if you're sitting
there in the middle of things trying to read your fights as the paper balls fly in all
direction, you're not only likely to get hit by a misfired projectile, but I will be
aiming for you!)
8. Showering at least once a day is not an option. REPEAT: Showering at least once
a day, is NOT AN OPTION!!!
7. Much like a watched pot never boils, asking if your overviews or reprints are
there yet every three minutes will only make the person sitting behind the desk
irritable (or even more so than usual). They'll be there when they get there.
6. Yes, the printer will break down, the hard drive will crash, and RSI will undergo
some sort of catastophe. This is normal. Be prepared for long delays. Some people
like to play Magic while waiting, some of us prefer heavy drinking.
5. For you first timers, it is customary to do a triumphant little war dance each
and everytime you win a fight, complete with whoop-whoops. That's what the raised
platform is for, so the rest of us can see you. If you don't do the dance, RSI will
take away your TVs and you will forever get 3 WT roll-ups. Would I lie to you?
4. Converse with your fellow managers. Take the time to chat, and introduce
yourself to at least one complete stranger. "Have you seen this warrior?" is not a
good way to introduce yourself. "Hi, my name is _______ and I run _______; nice to
meet you!" is a much better way to introduce yourself.
3. When the run off fights are being read, I want to hear a lot of noise! Cheer
every time a brilliant parry is made, shudder at the impact of a horrific blow, laugh
derisevely when a warrior falls down. Cheer those who read a good fight, and heckle
those who can't. Get crazy. MAKE SOME NOISE GOLDURNIT!!!
2. Conversely, if you insist on reading your fights out loud and you don't have an
audience, go back to your room until the urge passes.
1. Buy your good ol' buddy Forge a beer!
As always, your own tips and comments are appreciated. *LOL!* Hope to see you all
there!
