RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Greetings sword swingers and mace mashers all!
Here from the shadows it is none other than Zontani, known to most as "Sharp
Eyes" (although my friends call me the "Ale Eliminator") with fresh report on all the
doings here at Gateway.
All right, Falstaff, you have successfully impressed me by once again clinging to
the throne of honor and maintaining your titular honors as Gate Commander. This time
it was Executioner that fell under the weight of our hearty leader after a one minute
drubbing. Better luck next time Executioner! (whom I hear has sworn a vow of chastity
until such time as he can return and be victorious, although others I know say that's
no big deal considering the pre-vow normal extent of his commerce with members of the
opposite sex, or shall we say "lack thereof"!?) (whew, that was a long aside!).
Hats off to Zig Zag and companion teams for their continuing reign as the top
major team coalition (over 300 wins, impressive in any one's book). Only Teetotaler
and Vengeance were able to survive the perils at the Gate this turn, with all other
contenders having to be carted out in a handbasket. All that gore! The crowds loved
it. One of this weeks most impressive performances came from Mash who defeated
Ellegon who had a substantial edge in recognition going into the fight. Donatello
seems to be the most sight after gladiator in town, with many a bright eyed gladiator
seeking to challenge him to a little one-on-one time in the arena. This week it was
Quicksilver who got his wish to fight, but alas not his wish for the outcome. Maybe
next time.
Well I think I hear the corks popping out of my latest batch of home brew, I must
away. But until next we meet please remember that while the blood of youth runs hot
for a fight, the blood of experience runs cold for revenge.
-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
To my friends at the winter Face to Face: My sincerest thanks to all of you that
signed that most welcome get-well card. Reading your comments and seeing the
signatures of the best managers in the game (as well as the RSI staff) was the most
heart-warming event that I have experienced in a long time. The sentiment really
helped, because I started getting better immediately. I'm back to work now and am
hoping to see you all at the summer FtF. Thanks again for your kind thoughts. -- Best
regards, Papa Bear
Wonderful to hear! :) -- Skek (for all the RSI folk)

On February 4, 1997, Arena 12 will run its 300th turn. If you have a team in Riztab,
please play them. It would be great to see a big turnout for this milestone. Thank
you! -- Sleepy, mgr. Dreamers

ROLE-PLAYING IN DUELMASTERS
(Updated 1997)
Watching your warriors slice and dice their opponents or pound them into the
sands is lots of fun, but another very enjoyable part of the game is role-playing.
Naturally, you don't have to do it, but if you like it (as I certainly do!) here is
some background information that might help:
MANAGERS AND GLADIATORS
Many managers take on fictional names and identities, playing either natives of
Alastari, or travelers from other times, places, or dimensions. A lot of the
gladiators' managers in Alastari seem to be from somewhere very different, and thus
they have names and natures that are strange to the natives of this land.
It is somewhat difficult to do serious role-playing or storytelling in an arena
full of cartoon characters, superheroes, cyborgs, newspaper headlines, and sword-
swinging sports cars. So, we at the Gladiatorial Commission prefer to imagine that
most gladiators (unless they have some other semi-plausible reason for being where and
what they are) are actually natives of Alastari and are more or less human in
appearance. Although the arena fights are deadly serious, they are surrounded by a
lot of hype and "show biz" to help promote the games and bring more paying spectators
to the arenas. After all, this is where your gladiators' wages come from. Managers
usually give their new recruits special names to use in the arenas, to help catch the
attention of the crowds. Mothers in Alastari do not name their babies "'57 Chevy,"
"Less Filling," or "DA #4." As far as the rest of Alastari is concerned, fighters'
managers are an exotic species unto themselves, and there is no accounting for the
names they think up.
(By the way -- if any of you can think of a clever explanation for why the most
unusual people on the planet seem to gravitate towards the profession of gladiatorial
management, please let us know! We'll run an article listing the best suggestions!)
GENERAL INFORMATION
Alastari is a small region in a technologically primitive, magically rich world,
somewhat like the ancient Greece of mythology. The Alastari region is only about the
size of England, but it seems large to the inhabitants because they travel on foot or
horseback, over extremely bad roads. There is a stagecoach, simply called the
Shuttle, that carries managers very uncomfortably from one city to another.
The most common intelligent races in the world of Alastari are Men, Elves,
Dwarves, Goblins, Orcs, and Trolls. There are also various Giant races, Goblins,
Desert Folk, Swamp Folk, Gargoyles, and the little people. The little version of
Mankind is sometimes called Leprecons; the little race of Elves is sometimes called
Pixies or Fairies; the little version of Goblins is called Sprites. There are also
Sea Folk, Centaurs, and Elithan (winged humans). The primary non-humanoid races are
the Dragons, the Klass (spider-like mammals), True Bears, Owlmen, and the Pride (cat
folk). The Alastari region has been a racial melting pot for many centuries, so that
many human-appearing people have mixed blood. This is why shorter warriors are
somewhat favored (they may have latent magic from their Elven or "little folk" blood),
and why very large warriors may be at a disadvantage (many of them have inherited the
slower wits and sluggish reflexes of their Giantish ancestors--although modern Giants
dislike this stereotype and do quite a bit to dissuade it).
POLITICAL FACTIONS
1) The Andorian League is an association of northern kingdoms and city-states
bound together under King Mickael III. The Andorian nobility uphold strict ideals of
chivalry and honor. The Andorian League is on its way to becoming the first truly
strong, unified nation of Alastari. It is represented on the Isle of the Eye by the
arena known as Andorak.
2) The Delarquan Federation, in the south, is composed of kingdoms and city-
states with a more aggressive outlook ("might makes right"), and is loosely ruled by
the Crown Council, a congress of kings. The Delarquan cities tend to fight among
themselves, but they still present a united and dangerous front to outsiders. The
Federation is represented on the Isle of the Eye by the Darkholm arena.
3) The Free Cities are a group of independent city-states to the east, which have
tentatively banded together in order to resist the expansion of the Andorian League
and the Delarquan Federation. They are mostly younger cities with a freewheeling
frontier atmosphere, although there are independent empires, such as the Karnhorn and
Malcorn, who are "lumped in" with the Free Cities. Their arena on the Isle of the Eye
is known as Free Blades.
4) The Empire of Lirith Kai is a vast Empire to the west of Alastari across the
Trier Sea. Also called the Swordsman Empire. The people of Lirith Kai are,
generally, called the Adantri--they are human, as are the other "races" of peoples
that live in the Empire. The Emperor of Lirith Kai is Dian sen Lahka Twelve Graces.
Lirith Kai is a very proud and ancient empire, honorable to the extreme, powerful and
impressive, very self-contained. Lirith Kai maintains friendly relationships with all
the nations of Alastari, particularly those on the west coast of the Trier Sea. Their
arena on the Isle of the Eye is called Lirin Kiv. Chaos and the gates do not trouble
them unduly, but as they were the ones who introduced the fighting styles (their "Teva
Clans") to Alastari, they have an artist's interest in the arena circuit, and only
relatively recently allowed the opening of arenas in their Empire.
5) Sheila Greywand is a sorceress of tremendous power, who organized and led
Alastari's defense against the last great invasion of armies from the outer Chaos. In
preparation for the next invasion, she has raised an island out of the water in the
Lake of Mists. There she has founded a school of wizardry. To this island she also
invites gladiators who have won renown in their native arenas. She makes them
ageless, resurrects them whenever they happen to die, and oversees their continued
training. They will be the core of Alastari's defense the next time the forces of
Chaos invade. Many Alastarians sign up as gladiators and risk death in the arena, in
the hope of winning an invitation to Sheila Greywand's Isle of the Eye, and
immortality.

about the Alastarian/Lirith Kai roleplaying guidelines, you can write to the
Gladiatorial Commission.
Have fun!

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE TOURNEY...
'Twas the night before Tourney, And all through the place
Many managers were drinking, Getting smashed at the Face;
The staff were all busy, The computers were humming,
Rollups were bought, for the deadline was coming;
Soon managers were nestled, all smug at their tables,
With visions of TC's coming from their stables;
And NAIMT doing massages, while A-Sop caused trouble,
An hour before deadline, the workload just doubled,
When by the computers, there arose such a clatter,
All eyes turned to them, to see what was the matter.
Sue glaring at the screen, Lee's fingers just flew,
Oh, the computer was down, so what else was new?
The lights in the room were too bright, someone said,
Nah, it's just the reflection from off Hoffa's head,
Then, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But Soultaker and Sentinel, once again here this year,
Yes, we heard "No more Faces!", We hear this each time,
But we know it's a farce, like this parody's rhyme.
More rollups are bought, more warriors are made,
Names are thought up, and carefully weighed;
"How 'bout FREE WILLY? Or RODMAN? Or PUSSY? Or KNOCKERS?
Or SHEIK T'WEEZEL? Or BALLSY? Or TAKE OFF THEM DOCKERS!?
Not a chance say the censors! Nice try, bub, but no!
Now it's HAPPY, and BARNEY, and WE LOVE YOU SO!
The managers groan, but undaunted keep trying,
The censors all laugh, and just are not buying,
The RUGS altars are burning, offerings are gifted,
With hopes that the rollup curses soon will be lifted.
And then, in a twinkling, we hear down the hall,
A Lunat!k roar and Fusion chased with a maul.
You see, he'd heard about Fusion's campaign for the Prez,
Now it's "Off with his Head!", so Lunat!k says.
At the Dark Circle table, 6'7" down in height,
With their arrogant statures, their great show of might.
Yet amidst all the notebooks, are nerf toys and giraffe,
Such silliness there, NAIMT can't help but laugh.
At Aradi's table -- how they giggle, at the cartoons and stories
Of the FONZ done by Nuln, in his infinite glories!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a ring,
And Barb drew his beard as straggly as string;
The new guys at Duelmasters, some call them a rookie,
Making names for themselves like Jessie and Bookie;
The regulars are here, The Boss, PUG, and TUM
Carapace, Sensei, and lots more to come
Doc Steele and his legends, even now in the making,
If there weren't many witnesses, I'd think he was faking.
The paperball fight, and the chaos ensues,
Clean it up, says Lee, or your heads you will lose!
The independents and alliances, speaking more than a word,
NAIMT's resounding giggles can also be heard;
But the hour before deadline is soon at a close,
And giving a nod, on a chair Sandy rose;
Okay guys, she says, no more inputs to be made,
And away goes some managers for a Bourbon Street raid.
But ere I end this bad poem, I just want to say,
"GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD DAY!"
****Hey, what do you expect for a quickie?... <grin>
