WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
The light was odd in the Keep. It was an ethereal light, possibly a strange,
magical combination of their own sun, back on Ghea, and the intense, too-yellow light
of the double suns of the "lands of Chaos." Susanna Dickinson stood at the wall, an
odd feeling churning through her insides. Santa Maria... why had she come? What was
she doing here?
Along the wall, an evil-looking creature with six eyes and thick, leathern wings
glared at her from where it was chained down in a cage, grasping at the metal bars
with talons six inches long. The scraping sound it made was eerie, and made the hairs
on her arms stand up on end. "Move it or lose it, toots," came from behind her, and
Lestat strong-armed her through. Susanna stumbled, took a step past the wall, and
left Ghea, and the arenas of Alastari, behind... forever.
Lestat passed her, giving her a sour look. She didn't know what he was thinking.
He was hauling a heavy backpack, duffle, and a crate that clanked slightly--she didn't
know what it all was. Every one of them had all their earthly possessions in one or
two bags--at least, everything they wanted to bring with them or could carry--Lestat
had more than anyone. She didn't know why, she hadn't asked. She fell into step
behind him, as he seemed to know where he was going, although truth to tell, he
probably knew no more than she did. This was new territory for all of them.
"I thought as much," he said, pausing in the middle of the Keep and looking
around. "That's my goal. I don't know about you, toots."
"Please call me by my name."
"Well, you failed to introduce yourself," he replied, with a wolfish grin; she
realized that it was true--the only reason she knew who HE was was because she'd seen
him fight.
"I'm Susanna."
"Susie," he bowed, slightly, and a little awkwardly, with his heavy burden, "I'm
Lest."
"Lestat," she repeated.
"Arena name. My name's Lest. Come on... that looks like MY destination." He
aimed towards a small building at the end of the row, which had a crudely-made sign
hanging above the door proclaiming it the "Keep Inn."
"Stupid pun," she muttered.
"Typical tavern humor," replied Lest.
"Why the tavern?" she asked, as they reached the low front stoop.
"One, it's a lucky guess that our teammates already here will be there," he said,
shifting his load on from one shoulder to the other, "two, I have a crate full of
Iayean Blessed whiskey to sell and a should bag full of still parts and I want to set
up business. From the reports I've read, the warriors here could USE some good
liquor."
Susanna chuckled. "Ah, I see." Then she felt her heart drop into her stomach
and she almost froze again, in the doorway of the tavern, but managed to power her way
in and let Lest head for the barkeep with his wares. What had frozen her in place was
her first sight of Billy the Kid in over a year.
This place had not been kind to him. His skin was a deep coppery bronze color,
one eye covered by a black patch that also partially hid a long scar that ripped from
his hairline to his chin. He'd grown his hair long again, which she'd always liked,
but it was lank, the warm sandy-brown bleached almost white. But the blue in his one
eye hadn't changed, as he looked up and saw her; the vicious ice of the gunfighter
turned a bright cerulean, and he smiled--the same, boyish, buck-toothed smile--and he
waved her over. "I heard you were coming," he said, his voice raspy. "The soda pop
here stinks, but it's better than that banana-mango beer," he slid his mug across to
her.
"Billy," she said, sitting down hastily. "You look..."
"Monstruoso, yo conocer," he replied, the smile not leaving his face, his one eye
devouring her hungrily. The Spanish sounded lovely to her--no one else in Alastari
spoke it. "You... on the other hand... es su angelita."
"Is this place really that horrible?"
"No, not really. I just go out every so often and get my butt handed to me by
the enemy," he replied, taking back his mug and taking a long drink. "I lost the eye
to some feathered thing with claws liked blued steel sabres... I didn't even feel it,
I was dead by the time I hit the ground. Skek brought me back but couldn't save my
face. So it goes." He shrugged. "I've died so often here it's beginning to lose
it's sting completely. So what made you come?" he asked, looking up at her again.
There was sparkle in his one blue eye, a fire that no amount of horror and chaos could
quench. Susanna's lips quirked up at the corner.
"Eres todo mi vida... mi corazon," she whispered simply.
"Ah," he let out a long breath. "Why didn't you say that before I left?"
"I did... but you were being stubborn," she replied.
Billy reached into his shirt and drew out a locket and opened it. Her miniature
was inside. "Well, there must be some reason I've carried this next to my heart all
this time," he said, and the smile slowly returned to his face. "This isn't a place
for happy-ever-after, Susie," he said then, closing the locket and returning it to his
shirt.
"I know that. In fact, as I recall, I prefer it. But... the last year, without
you, has been... hell. So why not come to hell to be with you?" she said, spreading
out her hands. Billy reached across the table and gripped them with his own, coppery
bronze skin thick with new calluses.
"I'm glad you're here," was all he said.
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Those of you about to die (or at least get blood spattered), I salute you. It is
none other than I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, sovereign spy, regular rogue, and all around
good guy, here to tell all that I know and more concerning this week's doings at the
arena games.
How about those Wolverines and Mad Scientists? Not only are they sporting a
pretty excellent record in the team rankings, but if you think about it, their names
make one heck of a nasty combination. I mean, who would want to meet a wolverine-mad-
scientist in a back alley? It's sort of reminds me of those teenage-enema-nurses-in-
bondage we were so fond of in my days at the Spymasters accademy. Which gets me to
thinking... what if all the multi-teams combined their names? IF so we would wind up
with such ferocious combinations as the "Rat Pack Rat Pack." Sort of like a man's-man
don't ya know? Or how about the "Miscellaneous Roman Heroes" or "THEM the Hurt Bears"
or even "Those Who Rule Killer Aborigines?" Okay, so maybe only I think its funny.
But I heard that at least one manager was raising up a crop of teams with names
specifically designed to work well when read together in the Gateway newsletter. If
the rumor can be believed then watch out for teams named "I RULE," "GATEWAY," "BUT I
AM," "STILL A WOOSIE."
How about that Falstaff? Verily, he is an unstoppable force (although I hear
that if you ask him what sort of underwear he has on that he will turn red and lose a
lot of his overbearing vigor). This week he bested Hangover, won the Gateway swamp-
ale drinking contest, and the rat-pie eating contest all in the same day. What a man!
In other arena action Sly defeated Thanatos in an unusually long (8 minutes) duel
while Sgt. Slaughter overcame Furious Impaler in three pretty gruesome minutes.
Well that wraps it up for this week. Until next time please remember that while
you're out on the arena sands you can lose your sense of humor but you'd better hang
on to your liver.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Scrag -- Thanks again for the info. I don't think training here is what we hoped for
but it does seem better then Primus. We'll see. Tarad should be a great test case for
training. It will be a while though I want to grab some skills before I start to
train again. It's been long enough with one will train a year. :) -- Doc Steele
P.S. He got his 10th will train to 20 his last Darkholm turn. Nice send off.
Sly -- I hope Neon treats you well. Let me know if he gets out of line? Good luck.
-- Doc Steele
Psycho -- You are on fire. Looks like Tagan is just your little play thing these
days. Now take that Throne frm Falstaff! -- Doc Steele
Neon -- Enjoy my wins. :) -- Doc Steele
Vengeance -- I applaud you for a very civil answer that addressed the issue. However
vehemently I oppose your actions, I must respect that you stick to the issue.
However, since I don't seem to understand why your manager chose to have you fight in
the Gate eternally, perhaps you can explain the reasoning to me. -- Neon Necromancer
Caesar, Caesar, Caesar...why must it always be so? Doc LeGrand is not around to
defend himself, and yet you persist in insulting him. There is no need to apologize
to me for anything you've said, but you do owe him one. I expect to see it next turn.
-- Neon Necromancer, Defender of the Doc
Vengeance -- You mentioned my "joining the companions" to fight in the gate. Does
that mean for one turn, or every turn? How far do I have to go to earn a grudge match
against one of the benchmark warriors? -- Psycho Scientist, Pounder of Gateway
Tournament Victors
Caesar -- Who the hell cares how many Gate monsters have been slain? There is no
threat of them invading Alastari, and there never was. We're just here for show. And
no matter how many are killed, they keep coming back, usually more of the same. So,
what does it matter? -- Psycho Scientist
P.S. Do you seriously think they'll ever fix that kill bug in your record?
Scrag -- Thanks for revealing Furious Impaler's development. It's nice to know how my
own warriors stack up to some of the best and how much work I have left to accomplish.
-- Cheez
Caesar -- Wow. You actually DO write personals. I've seen more verbiage out of you
over the last couple of turns than I saw the entire time Cassius was in Malcorn. --
Cheez
Shawn and Louis -- Lemme guess. Teetotaler and Vengeance use you two as bait when
they go hunting chaos beasts. -- Cheez
The Dark One -- Hey. I'm here. Now what? -- Cheez

Let it be known that in the first part of July, Chimlevtal (DM 31) will celebrate its

ARE YOU AT YOUR WIT'S END??
Have you been unsuccessful in your attempts to make warriors that win
consistently? Are you unable to find fighting rhythms for your warriors that make
them look like "studs" rather than "duds"? If you answered "yes" to either of these
questions, then read on! This is another article in the endless stream of articles
which focuses on how to be more competitive at Duelmasters. One of my first warriors
when I started playing in 1985 looked like this: 13-15-10-9-11-16-10. He was a wall
of steel that went 0-5 before I DA'd him. Obviously, if this warrior went 0-5 back
then, he wouldn't stand a chance of winning today. Why? Simply because the amount of
information available about Duelmasters has skyrocketed. This article will discuss:
1. Understanding some of the basics.
2. Ways to get more DM info.
This article will attempt to help you "close the gap" between you and the
managers you compete against. Typically, the only difference between teams at the top
and bottom of an arena is the amount of knowledge their manager has about the game.
As you learn more about DM, you'll be on a more level playing field with your
competition.
Understanding some of the basics
The desire to succeed at Duelmasters has prompted many managers to do an
incredible amount of research about the game. In doing so, the scientific method has
taken over. Hypotheses have been formed and tested, leading to theories, which were
tested some more. Years later, many of these theories have become "laws" in most
manager's minds. Knowing some of these "laws" is absolutely essential to success in
Duelmasters.
Wit & Will: These stats are generally thought to be the two most important in
warrior design. You can do without one or the other in certain instances, but if both
are below 15 (i.e. Wit-13 Will-13) your warrior will usually be at a disadvantage.
Warrior overview statements: The warrior overview tells you much more about a
warrior's potential than meets the eye. "Wit Statements" (those little sayings under
the intelligence statement-i.e. "is VERY INTELLIGENT") can tell you your warrior's
starting skill levels in every area except decisiveness. If the overview starts out,
"is BRIGHT" and has no indented lower case statements below it, it's time to visit the
DA.
Skills "lost" by stat training: Some trained stats make your warrior "lose"
skills. For instance: training your strength from 14 to 15 makes you "lose" an attack
and a parry skill unless you already have 20 skills in those skill areas. It adds a
skill onto your total in that area, but now that warrior can only train 19 skills
instead of 20 so in essence, skills are lost (until they can be learned back in
Gateway, but that's a loooonnnggg time away for new warriors).
This is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of knowledge that is waiting out
there for you. The next obvious question is, "How do I attain this knowledge?"
Ways to get more DM info:
Now that I've given you some examples of things you need to know, I'll give you
information on how to access this pool of knowledge. The key here is to expose
yourself to information. You can:
1. Attend a Face to Face Tourney
2. Join an Alliance
3. Join the "aRt" (On-line Roundtable)
1. Attend a Face to Face Tourney: Far and away the most fun of the three options,
attending a FTF can be quite exciting. You have lots of time between turns to discuss
the game, and many managers who are willing to discuss it with you. In fact, some
managers are too willing (e.g. Man in Yellow). It's a fun experience, but can also be
quite expensive.
2. Join an Alliance: There are many alliances out there for you to join. I'm
personally not in one (though I'm still considering it) but many great managers are so
you can learn a lot from being in one. Unfortunately for newer players, some
alliances are probably closed off from them since they are relatively new to the game.
3. Joint the "aRt" (Roundtable): The roundtable is basically a mailing list (e-mail)
where managers talk about DM. More often than not when you ask a question, it gets
answered by many different people, giving you a wide variety of different views on the
subject. I believe you can join the list by e-mailing a "Please subscribe me" message
to "duel@primenet.com". If you start receiving a bunch of messages that say "[DUEL]"
in the title, you're in! There are also some homepages on the web that deal with DM
as well. Use any search engine (i.s. Yahoo, Webcrawler) and search for "Duelmasters."
Obviously, there is much more information out there than I touched on in this
article. Without actively seeking out some of this information, your future in DM
could be rather grim. Another way for newer players to learn more is the Duelmasters
Sponsor program which you can contact RSI about. If none of this sounds interesting
to you, but you still want to learn more, ask one of the other managers in your home
arena. I've found that people generally like to talk about Duelmasters so it should
be easy to get a response to any question you might have.
Thanks for your time in reading this article. I hope it helps some of you
achieve more success at Duelmasters. If any of you have responses, questions, or just
wanna BS, I can be diploed at Notorious (Arena #32) or e-mailed at MBender842@AOL.COM.
