WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
The huge avian hissed half-heartedly towards its tormentors, more out of habit
than any real malice. Patiently, Teetotaler prodded at the Gate-beast known as a
"Roc," and motioned for it to move its left wing up in a guard position. The avian
hissed again, but complied, making the well-practiced motion for its master.
Ever since the creature had hatched from its huge egg, the Companions had worked
with it every day, getting it used to obeying commands and teaching it to trust and
respect all who might someday mount it as a steed in the battle against Chaos.
When born, the Roc had weighed about 25 pounds and could be easily handled. In
response to endless feedings, it now tipped the scales at 500 pounds and was adding
his birth weight every day. Skek had estimated that the creature would tip out at two
to four THOUSAND pounds. Already the avian, affectionately called Rocky by his
trainers, could carry one rider for a short distance in a specially designed saddle.
At his full-grown weight, it was estimated that he should be able to carry someone
perhaps as far as a hundred miles. Teetotaler guessed that his primary value would be
in scouting. Unfortunately, he seemed to need to return to the keep often, as
carrying a scout put a huge demand on his appetite, and his upbringing had stifled
much of his hunting instincts.
While Tee continued to put the Roc through his paces, Vengeance discussed the
situation with Skek. Lady Greywand was irate about the lost Key and had berated the
diminutive champion over his "playing about in the jungle while the enemy waltzed off
with HER Key."
Vengeance related his plan to her, through Skek. It was quite simple, really.
The chaos spawn had three locations where they could safely bring the artifact: The
Dark Temple, the city of the Jaguar-folk or the Elemental Pit. These three
strongholds rested within the magical sphere determined by her enchanted javelin. The
exact location could not be determined until the javelin was brought much deeper
inside enemy territory. Vengeance pointed out that the Jaguar City was unlikely, as
the Jaguar folk, daunted by the might of the Lord Protectors, had not been seen in
some time. This left the Temple and the Elemental Pit. As the Temple was closer, and
more was known about it, Vengeance recommended that Keep forces unleash a series of
well-planned raids upon the Temple, each one of increasing magnitude, until the Chaos
Spawn were forced to move the Key to protect it. Or, if the Key was already at the
Elemental Pit, they would be compelled to send some of the forces guarding it to
reinforce the Temple, at which time, he and Teetotaler would drop in via Roc and make
a thorough search of the Pit.
Skek shrugged. "Just get the Key. Plans are meaningless if you fail."
With that, he wandered off to depart the Keep and leave the Lord Protectors to
their own devices.
Vengeance turned to Teetotaler. "He didn't exactly endorse the plan, but he
didn't offer any alternatives either. I'm going to fill the others in on the details
and get this thing set up."
Tee shrugged. "You are of course, assuming anyone will volunteer to attack the
Temple. These guys have become a little bit apathetic. What makes you so sure
they'll agree to even leave the Keep?"
"That's pretty simple. No Key, no opening of the Gate. No opening of the Gate,
no tournament. These guys live for that stuff. They'll fall into line, I hope."

RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
For those of you back here at the fort who are interested in what's been going on with
the patrol that Donatello led out, I have an interview with Complete Check and
Juanita, who have just come back with some news of the expedition:
Oscar: You two don't look in the best of shape. How was it out there?
Complete Check: Rough.
Juanita: Rough?! You didn't even make it back in a discrete number of pieces!
O: I heard Skek complaining. What happenned?
CC: I died.
J: Dead, part-eaten, and scattered to the four winds! Skek HATES regenerative
resurrections. Be glad I saved some of you. You know what he does to people
he's had to give complete regenerations to!
CC: True.
O: So, how did it happen?
J: You know. Skek gets all mystical and starts chanting...
O: No, no, no. I meant, how did you die?
CC: Oh.
J: Go on, tell him.
CC: Well, after we'd been out for a while, Lord Protector Donatello, he started
getting rather impatient with me-
J: That's 'cause you were carrying 7 of those long spears and-
CC: Enough of that! Anyway... So the bunch of them started getting farther and
farther ahead of me, and when I couldn't hear them any more...
O: Go on.
CC: Well, I got jumped. By one of the really nasties. I lasted about 10 seconds. I
don't remember anything after that 'til Skek's lab.
O: Juanita, how did you find him?
J: After I'd been traveling with the Ninja Turtles for a while (they're pretty fun
guys, actually), I realized I was supposed to be watching Check's back. I mean
we're teammates and all, right? So I told the gang I'd go back and see what she
was up to. Donny muttered some dire prediction or another, and I took off.
After about half an hour of backtracking (good thing Necron 99 leaves such an
easy to distinguish trail or I probably would have gotten really lost), I found,
well, pieces of Check all over the place. Something must have scared off the
feeding whatever-they-were, 'cause no one was around when I got there. I
collected as much of Check's remains as I could find and high-tailed it back to
the fort. Still took me a couple of days and I had to hide more than once, but
here I am!
O: So, was it really bad, all in all?
J: Nah. It was kinda interesting, really. Different. I've picked up a couple of
tracking tricks, and a little better feel of how to fight on uneven ground.
O: Oh? What do you mean by that?
J: Fighting over roots and in weeds and bushes is rather different than on the arena
sands!
CC: Yeah, I'm really going to have to change my usual fight strategy for out there.
J: Not me! I thought I still did pretty well.
O: Anything else of value to learn out there?
CC: I know who I'm going to be avoiding in the future!
O: OK, so when do you expect the rest of the expedition will be back?
J: No clue. Donny was still going like gangbusters when I turned back. He didn't
even look back.
-- Oscar
P.S. The stats listed in the last newsletter are, well, flawed. The ranking
categories are based on where they were after the fights! If you win in the Gate, you
move up. If you lose, you move down. Hey, what do you know? The people higher in
the rankings won more. Go figure! The bottom half (pre-fights) did still go
something like 7-16, but that's about twice as good as was reported. Just thought you
might want to know.

I'm really not one who participates in this sort of thing--you might talk to
Vengeance or the Gate Commander about it. But I'll relay the message on. -- O
Allright, Tagan. That will be quite enough of THAT! Next time... next time... --
Psycho Scientist
Oscar -- Perhaps we should post a watch, so we will have a warning next time the
fiends decide to overrun our stronghold. I'll take the first watch. I just want to
be sure we have warning next time we have to face the monsters. -- Psycho Scientist
As you may be aware, there *were* gate guards. We found them dead after
everything was over. But that's a good point. -- O
Oscar -- Sure, we could use more information about the gate monsters. How about their
attributes? -- Psycho
Big, ugly, often scaly. Many of them are shape changers. They *all* have really
bad breath. -- O
Caesar -- It was good seeing you at the FTF in Hartford. Your cheerful disposition
and outgoing friendliness was a beacon of delight for everyone in the room. I can
hardly wait to see what pleasantries you will surprise us with in Tempe. -- Neon

ALL SLOW ARENA MANAGERS -- If you are looking for an arena to start another team in,
might I suggest Krill (DM44). There are currently seven teams active there and all
feuds in the arena have been rectified (save a few of the blood sort). It is really a
great arena with a lot of character to it, but we are lacking in able bodied veterans
and hot blooded rookies to fill in the manager ranks. I have already spoken to
several experienced managers at the Face and was told by some that they would be
interesting in running there (including a certain Warden). I hope to see some new
faces in Krill and I hope that one of them might be yours. -- Ghab

A NOTE ABOUT THE NEW FIGHT FORMAT
Just a reminder that the new fight format is adjustable. You can have your account
flagged to show anything from no adjectives to all adjectives (i.e. if you like the
descriptive terms, but don't want to see so many of them, you could have your account
flagged for 50% and you would get half the number of adjectives you see currently.)
