                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the The Gate Commander

There is definitely some major weirdness going on around here. First off, how
could I get a random match-up with the Captain of the Gate when I wasn't even ranked
in the top ten? Not that I mind, but it seems strange that I didn't get several
previous title challenges, then I finally get my shot when I least expect it.
Second, what the hell is going on with Donatello and crew? They have left the
arena, yet they retain their rankings. Unprecedented. Are they off having fun? Are
they gaining valuable experience? Rumor has it that they are fighting several
monsters per turn. If so, I might just join them. That truly sounds like a
challenge. How 'bout it, Oscar? Can you verify what's going on with them?
Third, the gate monsters themselves. Did you notice how they suddenly became
fierce enough to kill both Vengeance and Teetotaler several turns in a row? A few
words from our gate defenders, and suddenly the monsters are back to being docile
victims. That's why it's going to get weirder.
You see, my plan is to monopolize this position as long as I can. If I can do as
well as Vengeance in the gate, Carapace's crew will not get a chance at the throne for
a long time. The point is to prove how flawed this system is. (Of course, now that
Oscar knows my plan, he can just feed the monsters a little extra beta-keratine and
ensure that I lose. If he feels he has to, then shame on him.)
I guess the main point is that, even though we all came knowing things were not
going to stay the same around here, we, the gladiators defending the gates, should be
consulted about the changes going on around us. After all, we are the ones being most
affected by them. We should have a say in them. How many agree? Let your voices be
heard!!

                            RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP

In the continuing series of interviews with our intrepid adventurers, I present
Raphael, our sometime bartender, sometime member of the Ninja Turtles guild, and now
sometime adventurer.

Oscar: So, how did it go out there?

Raphael: Well, hanging out with Donny wasn't that great, but the trip through the
woods was more fun than I expected, actually.

O: More fun?

R: Don't know if you knew, but I've spent a lot of time in the swamps. We were
skirting one of the local fens during part of the trek, and the inhabitants are
nothing like the ones back home! It was kinda interesting to see the similarities
    and differences.

O: I see you all got back in one piece. (Except, of course, for Complete Check, who
I interviewed last cycle.) How tough was it out there?

R: I really don't understand what everyone is crying so much about with fighting the
locals. Gladiators who can beat me in the arena claim that the Dragons are too
tough for them, but the group of us must have killed at least ten of them this
    last month.

O: How'd you do it?

R: Well, we Ninja Turtles have always worked on our group demos and teamwork
exercises. A couple of our cooperative tricks tended to deal with groups of up to
four of them--sometimes with a fair amount of trouble, admittedly.

O: Do tell.

R: Thanatos nearly lost an arm at one point. He wasn't of much use after that.
Well, except as bait. I REALLY don't understand him. No fear of death at all.
He actually volunteered to be bait for a couple of the fights.

O: *shudder* Any other problems?

R: Not enough weaponry. By the last couple days, Donny was down to just the dagger.
Of course, Donny with a dagger is still better than I am, but... you get the idea.

O: Yeah. Anything else?

R: I'd better get a warm welcome back from the babes!

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Neon Necromancer -- I barely made it to the FtF due to an extremely sore throat. I
went through, like, five bags of cough and throat drops. On Monday, my doctor
informed me I needed antibiotics. On Saturday I felt decent and shot some pool with
some of the other managers. But other than that bright moment, I was near death.
Again, keep your stupid comments to yourself. Next time you open your mouth, make
sure it's to put your pacifier back. -- Caesar

Oscar -- Sorry I'm late responding this time. Obviously you misinterpreted what I had
stated. There should be some way to program the Chaos Spawn to match up with warriors
of equal or similar skill level. The lower ranked warriors should match up against
lesser Chaos Spawn, the top ranked warriors should fight the tough monsters. -- Caesar

Program? Like for the theatre? I certainly agree that, if a group of
adventurers should come upon a group of creatures, one intelligent division of
duties might be to have the less experienced gladiators fight what is deemed to
be the less threatening monsters. I don't go fight them, though. So why are you
     asking me? -- Oscar
P.S. By the way, I'd prefer it that whoever is signing themselves as "Neon
Necromancer" and "Caesar" identify themselves, as I know that those two
individuals are not on this side of the gate.

Oscar -- Again I must advocate the replacement of the current ranking system with a
recognition point system. The current ranking system is very boring. I would like to
see points in the thousands. What do you think? -- Caesar

Since I would have to do those calculations (by hand, since I never did figure
out how to use an abacus correctly), I think that's a positively albendranius
     idea. -- Oscar

If I might interject, perhapsss you ssshould be ranked by how sssuccesssssful you
are at retrieving the key? Ssssay, perhapsss, a hundred thousand pointssss to
whomever sssucceedssss, and zero to all who fail? Even ssssomeone as indolent
assss Ossscar ssshould be able to keep ssssuch a ssssysssstem sssstraight? --
     Sssskek

Who let you in here? I didn't see you come in. I really don't like that magic
     stuff... -- Oscar

Oscar -- Let me clarify. As defenders of the gate, the gladiators should be given at
least one turn's notice when we will be fighting monsters. Our scouts should be at
least that good. -- Psycho Scientist

Mr. Scientist, I know of no scouts that can tell you the exact composition of a
group that will attack in two weeks time. There are some divination methods that
purport to be able to do that--back in Ghea--but no one here on Kaikwok has that
level of grasp of the magic of this world, and such divinations have... poor
     reputations, anyway.
Additionally, some responses to your Duelmaster's Column: If you want to
join Donatello on his extended journeys into the wilderness ASK HIM! Don't ask
me! I'm not going anywhere! It's dangerous out there!
What is beta-keratine, and why would I feed it to the monsters? (I didn't
even look at your column until after you'd left for the jungle, so don't blame
     me.)
If you want a say in the changes, tell it to the monsters. They're the ones
attacking the fort. And I wish you luck. -- Oscar

Psycho -- Mucho congrats on taking the throne!! I'll bet you never thought that you'd
got straight from Lieutenant to Captain of the Gate. -- Scrag

Oscar -- What's with the "#" next to the Ninja Turtles, and a few other warriors'
names? Does that mean they're not active in the arena, and we can't challenge them?
And please, spare me the roleplaying... I'd just like an answer I can decipher. And
please also take into consideration the feelings of those of us that are not at all
interested in the ongoing Gateway "soap-opera." I for one didn't really appreciate
having Furious fight "Invisible" a few turns back. If he had gotten killed and missed
a training opportunity I would have really been annoyed. It would be better to get
the manager's permission in the future. The only reason I brought Furious to Gateway
was to regain lost skills... not to fight monsters. -- Scrag

Individual signing as "Scrag" -- I'm afraid I can't feel much sympathy for
someone who volunteered to go through the gate to defend it from the local
denizens. Afraid of dying? Why? He accepted those duties, not only then, but
when he swore his oath to Sheila upon his receiving his Lord-Protectorship.
In answer to your question, the "#" that I put at the beginning of the
warrior rankings was to indicate people who were on patrol that turn. Indeed,
much like warriors who choose not to train in the arena that turn, they were
unavailable as valid challenges. You are welcome to challenge them in future
turns, just like inactive warriors, in the hopes that they will be
     available/choose to fight next turn.
Finally, managers have nothing to do with the warrior's choices once he has
stepped through the gate, and I am incapable of communicating through the gate to
warn them of anything I might feel they would want to know about. -- Oscar

ALL SLOW ARENA MANAGERS -- If you are looking for an arena to start another team in,
might I suggest Krill (DM44). There are currently seven teams active there and all
feuds in the arena have been rectified (save a few of the blood sort). It is really a
great arena with a lot of character to it, but we are lacking in able bodied veterans
and hot blooded rookies to fill in the manager ranks. I have already spoken to
several experienced managers at the Face and was told by some that they would be
interesting in running there (including a certain Warden). I hope to see some new
faces in Krill and I hope that one of them might be yours. -- Ghab
