Reflections by the The Gate Commander
It's good to be back. I always enjoy free fights. Anyway, congratulations to
all of you victorious in the Gate. The tournament should prove interesting.
Hopefully, I've won it. Yeah, I know Tee never wins. But there is nothing wrong with
dreaming...
I've dispatched another size 3 Chaos Spawn. These monsters are sure tiny. Where
were all those size 3 rollups when I was buying team set-ups???
Neon, my only suggestion to you at this point: Quit playing and find something
that you will actually enjoy doing.
Those Who Rule, let me guess... You are run by some Dark Circle/Legion8 flunkie?
I wonder which goofball it could be???
Gateway is really starting to shine. A sudden change of heart by many warriors
has livened up the Gate action. A new and interesting tournament format (hopefully, I
haven't received my results yet). And Teetotaler fighting for free. I can't
complain. But I bet Neon can find something to cry about.
That about does it. See ya later...
Caesar for Lieutenant Teetotaler,
Champion of the Gate
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
On looking back at this tourney, I think it was worth it. Going into it, I had
some misgivings--especially with all the indecision over whether you should be
fighting monsters or each other. But you all know my feelings on that issue...
We began with some wild versions of some of the creatures we've captured to use
as stand-ins in the arena, under the assumption we'd be dealing with a known quantity.
On day one, we headed out to the nearby volcano, Mt. Greywand, to do battle with some
Sulphurous Lizards. The short version is they weren't much trouble. Everyone won,
and mostly in 1 minute. Golden Bear even killed one before it could scamper away. We
did get some foreshadowing of some of the warriors who'd be having trouble in later
rounds; Juanita and Complete Check took 3 minutes to finish theirs, and Samona mostly
just watched for his 21 minute battle. I'd have to assume that Falstaff was just
playing with his for it to have taken him into the 2nd minute for the win.
In the afternoon's matchups everyone got to fight--the only time this would
happen. Some highlights: Gypsy Moth beat Donatello, and Bill the Cat somehow managed
to lose to the Sulphurous Lizard he got to fight when his was the last name still left
in the hat!
Day 2 began with a trek into the plains west of the fort where a Monoceros herd
had been spotted. The only gladiators graceless enough to lose to these lumbering
beasts were the two young Total Parries: Samona and Complete Check. That afternoon's
highlights included losses handed to Vengeance and Psycho Scientist by Opus and Fire
Donbelow, respectively.
Having had enough of beasts easy enough to capture, but still not interested in
reaching too far, we decided to try out an aerie of Air Lizards. Since we'd seen
their abilities in the assault on the fort, we thought they be a good next step up in
difficulty. Twice as many gladiators weren't up to the task this turn, and needed to
be rescued by friends; in addition to the previous, Juanita and Raven lost on Day 3.
That day's matchups generated these interesting results: Nameless Took slimly lost to
Delbaeth in a popular 3 minute gory contest; Vengeance savagely defeated Donatello in
a crowd pleasing 3 minute bloody competition; and Noelle devastated Fire Donbelow in
an exciting 2 minute bloody, uneven fight.
Day 4 brought us on our first foray into the swamps. Water Lizards don't seem to
be much better fighters than Air Lizards, but they are so much better suited to the
swamps than gladiators that we had noticeably more problems here. Twenty-one warriors
lost, most of whom would find this the beginning of a trend. The notable exception to
that being Sabre Tooth, who would hold on to win for 4 more days before being willing
to accept a second loss. Three of the four who'd tallied up a loss before this day
lost again, the exception being Raven. That afternoon saw a much reduced matchoff
round, with only 50 of our original 71 participants eligible to participate. Fights
of note included Reebok-Rat's loss to Nameless Took and Ta'ra's victory over Papa
Bear.
On day 5 we went back to another creature we'd gotten the measure of in the
assault: Ikkellia. These fast, fragile beasts won or lost their fights in 1 or 2
minutes in every case--almost all in 1. Gladiators killed seven of them, as a truly
powerful blow would kill them outright. Vengeance, Puppy Chow, Baron Cockroach, Gypsy
Moth, Tawny, Ta'ra, and Teetotaller got kills; and 3066 was overwhelmed and killed too
quickly for the rescue teams to get in and save him from the onslaught of the one he
faced. Though he was the only one to die, 24 warriors lost, 15 of whom had also lost
on day 4. This brought about the elimination of our first three contestants:
Complete Check, Samona, and Juanita. In the style notes, Lungers had a hard time,
going 15-10. In the 24 matchoff fights, Gypsy Moth devastated Psycho Scientist,
Vengeance lost to Executioner, Opus took seven minutes to beat Sly, and Papa Bear was
handily defeated by an Ikkellia.
On the sixth day, we ventured into the southern fringes of the forest, looking
for those strange teleporting creatures, Phase Lizards. These proved a tough match,
defeating 35 gladiators, generating more losses than any other day. All 13 gladiators
on the bubble were eliminated and 11 more were brought to that status. These fights
ranged over a broad spectrum of times, ranging from Falstaff's one minute victory and
Pontiff Pelican's one minute loss to 3066's 9 minute victory and Lazar Wolf's 4 minute
loss. From the style notes, Slashers went 0-3 this round. Part of what was really
tough about fighting the Phase Lizards was that you'd finally get a good shot in on
them and they'd Phase right out and your Good Shot would pass right through them!
On the seventh day, God may have rested, but we didn't have time. Some people
hadn't even broken a real sweat in any of their fights yet, so we knew we had a ways
to go before this would be over. From the reports Teetotaller and Vengeance brought
back, we knew there were some groups of Invisibles in the cavern system they'd been
exploring on and off. Wanting some "vengeance" for their surprise assault that had
opened the Fort gate for them, we decided to try our luck against them. There seemed
to be a wide variety in the fighting abilities amongst the Invisibles, as evidenced by
Hangover's loss and Darius's win. To this point, Aimed Blows are still undefeated;
Parry-Lungers went 10-0 this turn, and Parry-Rips went 0-2. That afternoon saw Psycho
Scientist beat Nameless Took, and Opus beating Rage.
Day 8 was an assault on the Temple of the Jaguar People. A variety of different
Jaguar Warrior and Jaguar Priests sallied forth to defend their temple. We won more
than we lost, but eventually had to retreat as reinforcements began to arrive. Aimed
Blows took their first loss of the tourney, here, but our lone Parry Strike was still
undefeated. Our last Slasher took a loss here, but our last Total Parry won. Nine
more gladiators were eliminated, bringing us down to 41 remaining for day 9. Overall
we went 29-21. Sly, Goldilocks, Alicia, Dangerous, and Teetotaller took their first
losses that day, leaving 19 undefeated warriors. In the evening's fights, Hyper-Rat
beat Vengeance, Rage beat Delbaeth, and Papa Bear successfully fended off the one
Jaguar Warrior who had tracked us back to the field we held our matchoffs in.
On Day 9, we, perhaps, overreached ourselves some and took our worst defeat of
the tourney to date: 13-28. All 11 warriors on the bubble lost and 7 more advanced
to that status. These Firecats are TOUGH! From the style info we see that Wastes did
the best, going 5-5. Pikers, Rippers, Strikers, and TPs all went winless. In the
mere seven matchups that afternoon, Hyper-Rat proved his victory wasn't a fluke, and
it took Vengeance 5 minutes to finish off Tawny.
The tenth day involved much bigger opponents in harder terrain, but, nonetheless,
not as tough. Against Water Dragons, our gladiators scored 18 victories to the 13 of
the previous day, winning 60% of the fights overall. Four warriors were eliminated
and four others took their second loss, leaving the total on the bubble at 7. Only 7
undefeated warriors remain: Vengeance, Reggie Jackson, Psycho Scientist, Hyper-Rat,
Gypsy Moth, Donatello, and Falstaff. Only two of these will still be undefeated on
day 11. In the matchoffs, Nameless Took beat Donatello.
After the relative success against the Water Dragons, we decided to take a step
up the Dragon chain and take on Fire Dragons on Day 11. This proved to be a bad plan.
A swarm of them swooped down on us as we were climbing towards their lairs, and they
definitely took the better of the engagement. We only won six of those 26
engagements. Again Walls of Steel posted the best record, going 3-5. Aimed Blows,
Parry Strikes, Strikers, and Total Parries went winless. Of the six winners, I feel I
must congratulate Teetotaler, who had lost to a Fire Dragon in a previous outing, but
learned from his mistakes to post a win this day. The other five victors were
Falstaff, Rage, Whiplash, Gypsy Moth, and Executioner. Five more contestants were
eliminated, bringing us to 21 left.
After that stinging defeat, we thought we'd try a slightly less devastating
opponent, while staying on the Dragon theme: Earth Dragons. It proved to be a wiser
move, but we realized that we're still pushing our limits. This day we went 9-12, and
Opus was definitely unimpressed with the improvement, as he came to need Skek's
assistance. Nine of the twelve on the bubble were eliminated and three more took
their second loss. Falstaff and Gypsy Moth remained undefeated. From the style
notes, Lungers and Plungers did very well, going 4-1 and 4-2, respectively. Wastes
had much trouble, going 1-5. AB's, TP's, and ST's went winless, again. In the
matchoffs, Gypsy Moth beat Vengeance and Executioner was unable to repeat his victory
performance against the Earth Dragon.
Day 13 was supposed to be a foray against Phase Dragons, but the group was
assaulted by strange Beings of Lights on the way. These Beings are really tough!!!
NO ONE beat one! No one even lasted more than 3 minutes! We decided to call it a
day, and eliminated 6 more warriors.
On Day 14, we took a different route to the Phase Dragon lairs and arrived
successfully. Not so successful was the fighting. Only one gladiator posted a
victory. Congrats to Executioner, who kept himself from being eliminated with this
victory, unlike Vengeance, Donatello, and Hyper-Rat. Donatello battled for seven full
minutes, but lost in the end, victim of two many Good Blows passing through the
target. This left only three warriors in the tourney: Executioner, Falstaff, and
Gypsy Moth--all with two losses. As there was only one warrior for the matchoffs, we
found another Phase Dragon for Executioner to fight, but he was too exhausted to
repeat the performance, and lost in 1 minute.
Day 15 began with much wondering: Would today be the final day? If it ended,
would it be because everyone lost, or would one warrior shine through? Vengeance and
Teetotaller conferred about the many opponents they've seen in their travels and came
to an agreement about one that might just provide the right level of difficulty. The
Shadowed Demon in the caverns had beaten Vengeance before, but it had been a good
fight. One of these fine remaining contestants might just be able to pull off a
victory. It was known that the Demon had an amazing healing rate, and that within an
hour or two, it would be back to full strength for another opponent.
Lots were drawn. Gypsy Moth got first honors. She drew first blood, but three
quick talon rakes dropped her and she had to be rescued.
Falstaff was tapped for the next try. Again, first blood for the Good Guys, and
second as well, driving the Demon to desperation. A third shot went through its
defenses! But a weak parry and a riposte and Falstaff was knocked to the ground. He
got back up, but right into the next swing of those deadly talons and he had to flee.
Warily, Executioner entered The Shadowed Demon's cave. The fight certainly
didn't begin well, with Executioner losing his Longsword to the first blow. Swiftly
pulling out his backup, he managed to keep himself from harm for a while longer, and
also drew first blood, and second blood, but not enough to send it desperate. The
third blow does, however, and drove the Demon into a furious attack, shattering the
backup Longsword. With the much vaunted Riposte-With-The-Backup technique,
Executioner managed to knock the Demon down!!! With swift efficiency, and four quick
thrusts, the battle was over, and Executioner was declared the Victor of the Tourney.
After much congratulations all around, all of the weary warriors then returned to
the Keep and to some much needed rest.
Tournament Victor challenges will be available to everyone who was still in to
fight on Day 11:
Opus Nameless Took Delbaeth Tagan
Vengeance Reggie Jackson Psycho Scientist Hyper Rat
Whiplash Baron Cockroach Gypsy Moth Donatello
Don Juan Tawny Sabre Tooth Hangover
Furious Impaler Falstaff Teetotaller Inflatable Doll
Reebok-Rat Dangerous Executioner Hawk
Papa Bear Rage
The weary warriors needed a bit of recuperation after their travels, as well as
some time to recount their adventures to those who didn't accompany them. Round 51
was unanimously postponed for three days, after which time even Executioner--the
Winner of the Tourney, was ready to resume training.
One final note on turn 51: I'd like to thank everyone who fought the gate this
turn. After having seen what you did during the past two weeks, I salute your
bravery. Delbaeth, Thunderbird, and Gypsy Moth proved that their victories weren't
flukes over their given opponents. Tawny embarrassed herself by being unable to
duplicate her efforts. And 3066 showed that he really wasn't suited for going much
further than he did in the tourney.
Let me know what you thought. -- Oscar

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I'm re-activating Eve...for how long, maybe you guys can help. Are
skills/stats easier to pick up in Gateway? The reason I retired Eve in the first
place is because of her lousy learns. 90 or so skills and 40 or so stat raises after
a TON of fights...She's got the 25 wit/will combo, but if I can expect only 2
skill/turn or maybe 1 stat every 12 turns, she's gonna retire again...permanently.
Whatcha all say? Keep her going or retire her? -- M.A.
P.S. For a parry strike, I personally think she has tons of potential...I just don't
want to have to wait until the year 2005 before she catches up to Akira in number of
skills and stats raised...

There is a Tavern in the Town...
Finally, after a great deal of research, study, gathering of information, wasting
time, not to mention hundreds of delicious meals later, I have finally complied enough
for the first article on Alastari's fine taverns, inns, and other such establishments.
For the sake of convenience, I started in the northlands, and the Island of the
Whistling Dragon, where sits the fine city of Aradi. Aradi simply has too many night
spots to do them all justice, but certainly the two greatest are Drake's Lodge and the
Blind Cyclops Inn. Both have an excellent setting, offer entertainment, lodging, and
a fine menu. Drake's menu has a wide selection not only from the northern Andorian
traditions, but also many more exotic dishes culled from the eastern seaboard,
Malcorn, and the Karnhorn Empire. The Blind Cyclops leans more heavily towards the
west coast cuisine, and some of the spicy dishes from the Aruaki Clanhold can be found
here. The seafood at both locations, and generally across town, is excellent.
Running down the coast into the Aruaki Clanhold itself, the first stop would
normally be Amen-Tei; however, I jumped over it into the heart of Andoria, first.
Along the populous Catseye River you'll find the cities of Seam, Aruak and Solven. In
Seam, one of the finest places to eat is the Stoned Golem. The prices are reasonable
and the cooking excellent. I recommend the dragon steak highly; fiery seasoning and
the richest Kati-Tei wine to wash it down with. Also in Seam you'll find the Frozen
Arms Inn--a perfect location to go if you particularly enjoy indoor ice skating (on
the floor). The temperature is kept at a constant 25 degrees Fahrenheit, but if you
have a heavy parka, I recommend at least stopping by for a drink of tira--I don't know
what's in it, and I hate to ask, but it's worth it.
Seam is also home to the Firedragon Inn and the Final Rest. Both cater more to
the hard drinkers rather than the picky eaters. The Firedragon is more likely to host
a bar brawl--if you like quiet conversation, I recommend the Final Rest.
On into Aruak, you'll find the Bulldog Inn, a place for food, drink, gambling, or
sleeping--whatever you're looking for, you're likely to find it. The food is tasty
and the companionship unequaled.
In Point, you'll discover the Ogre's Crypt. Run by the same people as the Blind
Cyclops Inn of Aradi, it offers a similar style of cuisine. It's been rumored that
offworld "soft drinks" are also available here, although that is strictly heresay.
Enjoyable, always.
Across the channel in Iaye there rests one of the finest inns in Alastari, the
Dragon's Blood Inn. Notable not only for its fine food and excellent selection of
imported wines and liquors, the Dragon's Blood has one of the most welcoming interiors
of any inn I've seen. The large downstairs rooms are divided into a gigantic "common"
room with a fireplace large enough for five men to stand in--frequently to be found
there entire sides of beef, slow cooking for the evening's meals. A "party" room can
either be closed off from the main room for private gatherings or added to the
spacious quality. Smaller rooms are also available. Also, the Dragon's Blood offers
the best whiskey I've ever tasted. Also in Iaye is the Rat's Nest. Found on the
northern waterfront, it is mostly a tavern and well known mostly for its taxidermy.
The walls are a veritable museum of native Alastarian wildlife. Gambling, drinking,
and women are the main staples here.
Back on the mainland, I stopped in Khalhums long enough to listen to the music in
the Blues Hall--not much on food, but the drinks are generous and well priced, and the
music unbeatable. Also in Khalhums is the Black Sheep Inn; it's a large barn-shaped
building not far from the arena that serves good food (mostly mutton, but it's lean
and well-cooked) and excellent spirits.
Going down into the Federation, I found an exciting place in Sunset called
Wildlife Unlimited--anything you want, you're likely to find it here. All forms of
entertainment, any drink imaginable, food from lands all over Alastari and beyond.
Part of the profits of Wildlife Unlimited goes to the training, research, and
development of warriors. Also in Sunset I found the Baba Yaga's Bar and Grill, with
great beer served in gigantic mugs with large tin plates heaped with filling, tasty
food. It's a comfortable, friendly place that I recommend highly to anyone traveling
down that way. Across the street is a large casino called Cagliostro's Castle--very
classy place that caters to the "better class" of gambler. A very enjoyable evening
can be had there if you win--the drinks are a bit on the expensive side, but the
liquor is the best.
Crossing over to nearby Transel, stop by the Sultan's Tent. The menu is
extensive, serving dishes from most of this corner of the world; I highly recommend
the Nianian Firefish. The drinks are good, with a big selection to choose from, and
the entertainment excellent. The ambiance can't be beat, with a massive firepit sunk
into the center of the common room; when the fire is out, a stage can be pulled over
it for more of the entertainment. I suggest stopping by on the weekends, when the
fire is lit and the overhead skylight drawn back--quite a sight! It's made mostly of
mahogany and marble, and is kept up well.
In Tricorus, there were several places that caught my eye, but most notable is
the Blue Dolphin Inn. The Blue Dolphin is a large establishment reminiscent of the
Dragon's Blood; comfortable and roomy, with gigantic bay windows looking out at the
massive Tricoran monument, Three-Horn Mountain. The food is good, if plain fare, with
healthy portions at a reasonable price. Excellent drinks. Highly recommended. They
naturally specilize in Tricorus' delicious gold brandy.
In Delarq Tor, if you can find it and get in, there is Ho's Pleasure Club.
"Pleasure" is the opperative term. Fortunately, I had a face the doorman liked AND
the hundred bashari cover charge and was allowed in without being beaten to a pulp (as
I saw happen to some other hapless fellow). The music is loud and tasteless, as are
the women--apparently there is a house rule that the only women allowed are sluts or
royalty. There is gambling, regulated by the house and the house takes profits from
all winners. The drinks are watery. The house rules are strict. I got out before I
was thrown out.
In Talcama, if you're in the mood to be silly, stop by at the House of Jello and
watch the wrestling matches. Apparently, better food and drink is served upstairs,
but the entire purpose of the House of Jello is to go down to the pit and watch the
action. It's just for fun, and that it is. If you're there, go.
I found the Choking Ogre in Cliffhome, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It is an
extensive building with a high ceiling, a combination tavern and gamehouse. The food
is excellent--daring, spicy, and dramatic, presented well and cooked to perfection.
The portions are healthy, as are the drinks--sometimes necessary when having the Hot
Spiced Minature Potatoes! Everything is reasonably priced.
In Rocanis, there were too many taverns to choose from. The Wanton Troll,
Mylar's, the Grub & Rub Bar & Bistro, and on--I finally settled on the Wanton Troll,
for its popularity. The outside isn't promising, and being greeted by the six foot
tall (and wide) proprietress, the wanton troll herself, Beulah, is a trifle
frightening. However, once you get past her (if you don't know the password, flirt a
little with her and she'll let you in), you'll find it's all worth it. It's a
boisterous, crowded place, generally full of loud talk and laughter. Hot and spicy
food is plentiful, and the drinks are served in large, often iced, mugs. On a good
night both are excellent, although it sometimes depends on the cook. It's always
enjoyable, though, and it's a place I've been back to.
Further north on the eastern side of Alastari, I found Salty's Chowder House in
Morya--a seaport tavern inland; and worth it for the food, the house special Chowder.
It's thick and filling and VERY tasty. I was disappointed to find none of the more
impressive drinks; southern wine for the most part, although Arkers pale ale in that
neck of the woods is worth the price.
In Lapur there were a number of taverns, with the Burned Tree (formerly the
Gnarled Tree, before a fire gutted the old building; it has been re-built) being the
first on my list--a pleasant place with excellent drinks but the food was only so-so
without much of a selection. The Blue Rose Tavern served up better food but only
three varieties of beer and again, only southern wines. The Drowned Rat offered an
good whiskey but only had pretzels and nuts.
I found a small tavern in Monuntial called Pontiff's Potent Potables; the food
was plain fare of the meat & potatoes variety--unremarkable but plentiful and tasty,
reasonably priced--HOWEVER, the excellent and exotic array of drinkables makes this a
definite find. Each of the drinks seems to have a quality all its own; you definitely
leave feeling good. Fighting is discouraged and weapons are checked at the door.
Reservations are recommended.
I cut back up to the Isle here, and found several excellent places. Just outside
Willow Beach, near the Darkholm arena, is the fabulous Eve's Palace Casino--upper
crust, upper class, and definitely worth the price. An excellent place to spend an
evening.
In Talahya, I stopped by E-Snee's Bar & Grill; ordinary food for ordinary prices.
Generally good. Nearby is the "food market," which is a block of restaurants of all
kinds. You can find everything from southern desert cuisine to the exotic stuff of
the Northwights. If you're on the Isle, you could try a new restaurant every day.
Talahya's Market District is home to restaurants of every shape and size, serving food
from all over Alastari and Lirith Kai. Not far from the Primus Arena and the Grey
Tower, this street of little restaurants, taverns, and theatres is a must if you are
just passing through. Check it out and you'll find what you're looking for,
guarenteed.
Over in Andorak, the Crimson Eagle caters to all whims; food, drink, lodging,
gambling--a very classy-looking place, serves to all types and has a good selection.
Also in Andorak you'll find the Sightless Dragon, a smaller but no less welcoming
environment with excellent live music nightly.
Close by, near the Home Guard arena, is the ever-popular Bash & Glug--food and
drink, plenty of both, for a good price. Fun, fights, & frolic is the rule here, no
weapons allowed. Their early morning breakfast bar is a MUST. Also here is an Ice
Cream Parlor under the name Arthur's Last Stand (I'll explain that shortly). Exotic
flavors, good on a hot day or any day.
Arthur's Last Stand is a "chain" of taverns operated in the cities of Talcama,
Caer, Morya, Dullens, and Willow Beach (Darkholm). They are the same wherever you
find them; friendly, with decent drinks and decent food. Recommended if you are
someplace that they are--familiar, comfortable surroundings.
If you know of a tavern or eating establishment in your city that you would like
to recommend, let us know about it!
