Reflections by the The Gate Commander
It sure would be nice if Carapace has decided to retire from the game. I was a
little surprised (not to mention elated) to see him inactive last turn. If he goes,
it will be the happiest day of my Duelmaster career. Well...except for the day the
Boss Rat finally ceased his fabbering way back when. That is certainly a memorable
occasion...
And speaking of jabbering, are you actually going to allow my column to be
printed Mr. Spyreporter??? It's amazing that my two sentences worth of personal ads
were censored two turns ago. And then you have the nerve to complain that nobody
writes anything. Here's an idea: LET IT BE PRINTED KNUCKLEHEAD!!!
How are we doing on fixing this kill problem? Maybe if you gave us a free fight
every turn that it's broken, that would encourage you to correct the problem. This
usually hastens the solution of problems at most companies...
If you are not going to publish my column in its entirety, then don't print it at
all. However, censorship in the information age is just a little ludicrous. Perhaps
you should try responding to my column. I don't even get those little "we didn't
print your stuff because..." notes with my turns anymore. The Commission seems to be
getting a tad a ALOOF as the years pass by.
Print it or shred it. But don't edit it...
Caesar for Teetotaler, Captain of the Gate
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Caesar, you wanted your Captain of the Gate column to be printed or shredded, but
not edited. Honestly, guy, I'd'a rather fixed your spelling and grammar mistakes, but
you asked for it, you got it. This time. Next time, why don't you try saying
somethin' everyone cares about, for that matter something anyone cares about, insteada
ramblin' on about your own personal grudges? I mean, you know how many kills Tee and
Vengeance have, what does it really matter whether they are all shown in the
newsletter each turn? Geez. I'm workin' on it. Like I said before (and you guys
should've figured out by now), paperwork is not my specialty.
Enuff said. On to the fights.
This round, the round before our little tourney, Tee challenged a Shadowed Demon.
And lost. Big time. Psycho Scientist revenged J and Alicia and killed that Xozke
thing, whatever that is, and has retaken the title of Captain of the Gate. I wonder
how long this will last?
(Psycho, will you please tell us all what a Xozke is? I don't think nobody's
ever killed one before.)
Vengeance and Reggie Jackson both bravely sought monsters of the gate, and both
succumbed to them. Those Phase Dragons sure are nasty, aren't they? Better you than
me! Really, though, thanks guys, good try. We'll get 'em yet.
For some reason, Roman Heroes are afraid of Briteron By, 'cuz they've been
avoiding them turn after turn after turn. Why is that, Caesar? The most challenged
warrior was Deathtongue's Bill The Cat. Interesting. More people wanted to fight him
than Tee. Maybe it's the way he says "Ack."
By the way, I'm really jazzed about you all taking the time to let me know that
you like tourneys. I know you all wanted one last time, but I didn't get a clue that
it was a general sort of thing. Silly me. I'll keep that on the top of my little
head and make sure we have them from now on. Do me a favor and keep in your heads
that the Grey lady calls them non-sanctioned tournaments. And if the old lady turns
me into a frog, I expect you all to stand up for me. All rightee?
And I hear ya, Guardian--not that it's gonna do much good for me to hear ya, but
I do. I don't really know what to suggest you do. The whole learning thing seems
kinda magical to me. I know I sometimes feel like my brain's full, maybe that's the
problem? I mean, when you're a schoolkid and just learning to fight with little
wooden swords, you learn new tricks much faster than you do later on. Sometimes it
feels like you try and try to beat the other guy, and it takes forever before you can.
If ever. 'Cuz he's gradually learning your tricks, too. I don't have any magical
wand-like thing that will make a guy learn faster. But I'll keep my eyes open.
Well, I'd better get a move on so I can get ready for our little tourney. By the
time next turn runs, it'll all be done. So far, there are 52 warriors who've entered.
Almost half of you guys. Gotta go figure out the matchups for the first round, now.
As soon as our little tournament is over, we need to all sit down and talk about
the whole Sheila and the key thing. We've gotta figure out a solution, preferably one
that ends up with us on the other side of this hell-hole. 'kay? And preferably one
that leaves me without a tail...
See ya around,
Oscar

Oscar -- Bring on the Gateway tournament. I sent Docile Mistress to Gateway to fight
the ancient legends of the game. Whether it is a monster bash or not, I'm up for the
tourney, even though I doubt I will win a round, let alone go past round five. -- JT
Okay, a tourney it is, then. It's hard for me to know what you guys want if you
don't say anything. -- Oscar
Oscar -- Yes I want a tournament. I don't talk to you because I don't really get into
"roleplaying." In the future please do not assume that we do not want a tournament
just because we don't say anything; our sending in strategy sheets should be well
proof enough that we want a tournament. Three losses drops you from the tournament,
not five. However, Gateway and Primus warriors are guaranteed five rounds, so after
the 5th round all 0-5, 1-4, and 2-3 warriors are dropped. I _absolutely_ agree that
the champion of the tournament should receive a prize... the same prize as every other
tournament offers (this time it's 10 skills). As a matter of fact, Vengeance and
Executioner should have received prizes for the tournaments they won also. I'd be
screaming bloody hell right now if I was in their shoes. Please don't assume that
Gateway managers would think of a prize as "useless" just because it does not work on
Gateway warriors. I doubt there's a single Gateway manager that doesn't also manage
warriors elsewhere. Even if there is, however, there are managers out there that will
pay top dollar for prizes... so regardless there's no way that any prize could be
considered "worthless." I feel that whether or not there should be a Gateway
tournament and whether or not there should be a prize for said tournament shouldn't
ever even have been an issue; I don't understand why dropping the Gateway tournament
was ever even considered in the first place. -- Scrag
Oh. Three losses, not five? All right, who was pulling my leg? Well, since I
said it was going to be five losses, five losses it'll have to be. I sure hope
we can get this whole thing done before next turn! -- Oscar
Well, 7 fights in Gateway last turn, 0 trains, 0 skills. What a difference this
improved training in Gateway makes. -- Guardian
P.S. In my last like 40 ADM fights I've had like 4 warriors actually get a skill or a
train.
What a bummer. -- Oscar
Wraith -- You'll never do that again, you pathetic scum! -- Maimed
Sleazee -- Don't get carried away... after all, not all your guys are like Kinsereth.
-- Papa Bear
Bhurak -- Are you getting better, or am I getting worse? -- Rage
Oscar -- I for one lumped you in with the "Commission" and their sympathizers with
that ridiculous mentality that the warriors here in Kaikwok should be punished for
losing the Key. That is why I have not taken time to speak with you in some time. I
have an extensive military background so I know a bit about leadership and war. I
tell you that Greywand earns no respect with her temper tantrums and punishments. A
good leader would be out among their troops rallying us to retake the key. Anyway,
your open disrespect of Greywand last turn has forced me to take another look at your
politics. Maybe we do have something to talk about after all. The tourney is
something "normal" in this world of Chaos. They go a long way toward our morale. It
is foolish that we are not allowed back to Ghea to have a normal one and see our
friends and family. Bad for morale, bad for public opinion of Gateway on Ghea, bad
for the defense of the Gate. One would think that an all powerful sorceress could
figure that without our help. -- Tarad
Well, I was under the impression that we couldn't go back to Ghea. How can we
get back there without the key? I thought that was the whole point. But if you
guys want a tournament, I can do that. Not being a magician, I can't transport
people through the gate or anything... -- Oscar
Oscar -- I didn't know our opinion was unknown to you. Of course we want a tourney.
I think sometimes certain people forget that we are not soldiers here. We are in fact
gladiators that volunteered for some hazardous experimental defense of a magical
portal. A defense of a portal to another world that exiles us from our homes forever
at the whim of a foolish girl with a powerful wand. We should not be treated like
children who lost their lunch money. -- Crystal Dove
All I know is every time I hear anything from that b****, she rants and raves
about you idiots losing "her" key. (shrug) She says that she sent you here to
guard the gate, and what do you do? Party all the time, and forget to stand
watch! She says. -- Oscar
Carapace -- What happened to the mass monster mash? Decided to fight real warriors?
-- Psycho Scientist
Furious -- You're welcome for the undeserved loss. Now you can continue to be the
best of the mediocre, a high honor indeed. -- Sly
Delbaeth -- Are you ever going to grace us with a few words of wisdom from the top
warrior in all the lands? -- Psycho One
Hangover -- What were you thinking? You haven't beaten me for two years now. What in
Kaikwok made you think this time would be any different? -- Psycho Scientist
****************************** these are from this turn ******************************
Oscar -- I sent Docile Mistress to Gateway so that I would have a chance to fight the
legends of the game before they died of old age. With the development speed of the
game, the only way I will fight Donatello and Vengeance is in a tournament. I thought
the monster tournament was neat and that pushed me over the edge. Docile Mistress
also is here as a scout--is it worth it to develop warriors with Gateway in mind? I'm
still undecided at the last. -- John Thompson ( JT )
*****Why wasn't this ad (the last one) printed last turn?? Oscar asked about
tournaments and why there wasn't any ads, so I simply stated _exactly_ why I don't
write any ads and what my stance is on tournaments. My ad doesn't get printed, and
then he complains again about not getting any responses!! Geez, if you don't want us
discussing this stuff in the newsletter then don't bring it up in the first place! I
expect this to be printed this time around, or I want an explanation as to why it
didn't get printed.
Uh, there was this big wind, see, and, uh, all of the little papers blew all over
the place and I couldn't find them. Yeah, that's it. It took me days and days
of searching high and low, just because I care about you guys, and I braved
invisibles and dragons in order to rescue them all from the tops of the highest
trees, and then I brought them back, miles and miles through the deep, deep snow,
and now they're here, really, they are. -- Oscar (sweating)
Oscar -- The following reply was written _last_ turn but not printed, so don't blame
me for not getting a response! Just because it might not be what you want to hear is
no reason not to print it. What, are you only going to do? Print only the opinions
of people that agree with you, or what? If you're not going to print my reply, why
ask the question in the first place?? -- Scrag
Okay, okay, maybe I just lost them. But they're here now.
-- Scrag
Message received. -- Oscar
Carapace -- Oh no! The only thing worse than you challenging the Gate with most of
your warriors, is you missing the turn altogether. God forbid you're dropping out!
Say it isn't so. I can't beat any one else but you.... then I'll have to drop out
too! That will leave Doc alternating between crushing Psycho and getting crushed by
Donny. A sad state. -- Papa Bear
Oscar -- You've obviously lost perspective! Too cold for you here? Lest you forget,
you were sent here to serve us, not the other way around! Also, we've been fighting
together for years! Gloating in the personal ads just isn't so exciting anymore.
Also, we are the elite warriors; warriors who have chosen to leave Alastari. It goes
without saying that we want our tournament. And it's YOUR job to give us one! If you
don't like it, or us, go have a chat with Lady Greywand. I'm sure she's cooled down
and is fine about the lost key, right? The better equipped we are, the sooner we'll
return the stupid thing! Some of us weren't ready for these monsters, in case you're
dim! -- Goldilocks
Cooled down? Maybe we're talking about two different people. Much to the
contrary, my dear Goldilocks, much to the contrary... -- Oscar

ROLLUPS--WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THEM?
Roll-ups.. what do you do with them? Where do you add your fourteen points?
I've got a couple of team roll-ups here in front of me, just average, random, teams.
I'm going give you the numbers off the set-up sheet, and what I would do with them,
and why. My way is far from the only way, but I've been playing a good longish while
now, and I've done fairly well.
The warriors described below won't be great, although some of them will be very
good. But they all should be runnable, they will probably live through their first
few fights (unless they get very unlucky), they will have a decent chance of winning
fights, they'll teach you about warrior design and management, and they'll be fun.

Warrior number one: started as 7 9 17 3 16 10 8 ended as 9 9 17 9 17 10 13
The first thing I did was add six to his wit. He's still dumb, but he will at
least know which end of his weapon to hold and which to poke with.
I could have added five to his will and brought it up to twenty-one, but I
didn't. Why? Well, in the first place, a twenty-one will isn't really necessary, if
it's going to be at the expense of something else; seventeen is fine. That's the
thing about twenty-ones, they are ALWAYS at the expense of other stats, and a warrior
can't make it on a single twenty-one, not if the rest of his stats are poor.
Seventeen will give him all the will he needs right now.
And why did I add five to his deftness, and only two to his strength? Because
all the strength in the world won't do any good if you don't land your blows on
target. A strength of nine will let you handle plenty of useful weapons, and a
deftness of thirteen will help you hit your foes.
This still isn't going to be a really good, long-term warrior, but he'll be
decent. I would probably make him a basher and give him a war hammer or a battle axe.
Warrior number two: started as 11 10 11 4 9 13 12 ended as 11 10 11 9 15 13 15
This one's not much better than the first; I hate low wit in a warrior. But.. I
only added five to his wit, and I could have added six! Why? Because odd numbers in
your starting stats give you an advantage. But like the guy above, this one is going
to be stupid and learn poorly.
Then I added six to his will, because a good will is important, as important as a
good wit. A warrior with low will gets discouraged and quits easily, and I don't like
that.
Which left me with three points, and all the other stats fairly even. I could
have put those last points just about anywhere, but when in doubt, once wit and will
are covered, your best bet is usually to add to deftness.
This warrior won't be great, his low wit prevents that, but he'll probably be
pretty good as one of the aggressive styles: a basher, a lunger, a slasher, or a
striker.
Warrior number three: started as 9 6 15 7 9 14 10 ended as 9 6 15 13 15 15 11
This one's going to be fairly decent, as warriors go. By adding six to his wit
(FIRST place I look to make additions), I have gotten him a decent thirteen. Fifteen
would be better, but it's out of reach. This warrior WILL learn skills, though
slowly.
Six to will gives him determination, and the down-the-line ability to raise his
other stats later on.
One each to speed and deftness, to get those desirable odd numbers. Sure, it
would be nicer if they were reversed, with a fifteen deftness and an eleven speed, but
you just can't have everything.
A strength of nine won't give him the heavier weapons, but who wants to use a
maul, anyway? And a constitution of six means he won't take much damage or have a
great endurance, so we want to give him a style that tends to short fights: a lunger,
maybe, with striker as second choice and slasher as third.
Warrior number four: started as 5 17 13 9 4 12 10 ended as 7 17 13 15 9 12 11
This is not one of your luckier specimens. I give him a six on wit and get a
respectable fifteen--I have a lot of successful warriors with fifteen wits. But
adding five to will only gives him nine, so despite the fact that his high
constitution will allow him to take quite a bit of damage, he will still be prone to
quiting.
Then, with those remaining three points, I have added two to his strength. Seven
strength won't get him a lot of weapons, but he could use epee, I think, dagger,
hatchet...
And one to deftness, for the odd number. If it's a question of bumping deftness
by one, or speed, I'll take deftness every time.
This one.. even with that monster seventeen constitution, he quits too easily to
be a total parry, so I'd probably make him a lunger, and give him the epee mentioned
above. The poor goop won't die easily, and he may turn out to be fun over the short
term, after all.
Fifth warrior: started as 4 3 9 9 16 16 13 ended as 7 4 9 15 17 17 15
This one is probably the best of the lot. Six to wit for fifteen, very good. I
can live with a fifteen-wit warrior just fine.
Then, as a bonus, a mere one to will brings will to a very desireable seventeen.
This one already has potential, and I've still got seven points to distribute!
So, why did I only add three to his strength? At a strength of seven, he'll be
handicapped in weapon choice. True, and a high speed will compensate for a moderate
deftness to some extent, so I could have gone one to speed for seventeen and then left
deftness at thirteen. That's a personal bias, I guess. Going for a strength of nine
and a deftness of thirteen with this roll-up would make a perfectly viable warrior.
This one, as all good warriors do, has a serious flaw--his constitution of four.
He won't be able to take much damage. He may die early in his career. This is the
risk that all warriors take, of course, and the best I can suggest is to put the guy
in heavy armor, ring mail and a helm (ARM/H) as a minimum. In heavy armor, he won't
win a lot of fights at first, because the weight will slow him down and tire him out,
but he'll survive, and he'll learn, and eventually he WILL be able to make it with
lighter armor. I'd probably make this warrior one of the finesse styles, a parry-
riposte, maybe, a parry-lunger, or a parry-striker. [Warning: Parry-ripostes do
poorly early in their careers and have a depressing tendency to die.]

First warrior: started 6 5 8 4 12 19 16 ended 9 5 8 9 17 19 17
Again, I added first to wit and will, getting the highest odd number I could.
Then only one point was needed to get deftness to seventeen, so I dumped the rest on
strength.
This warrior won't learn well, and he won't handle the heavier weapons with ease,
and it won't take much damage to put him down. But he'll be fast, and accurate, and
determined. He is definitely one of the aggressive styles, since he doesn't have the
brains for finesse. He could be a basher with a war hammer and have a decent chance,
but I'd probably make him a lunger and give him a longsword or a shortspear.
Second warrior: started 10 10 10 7 4 14 15 ended 13 10 10 13 9 14 15
Again, first I bumped wit and will, then, finding deftness okay (nothing about
this warrior is great), I increased his strength. This is another offensive warrior:
basher, lunger, slasher, striker. He'd be fairly good at any of them. To me, this
guy looks like a striker. He has the strength and deftness for a lot of weapons,
although his low will is going to be a handicap.
Third warrior: started 6 10 12 12 9 13 8 ended 6 10 12 17 15 13 11
This one is pretty good. As you can see, I added to wit, will, and deftness, the
old standby trinity of Important Stats. Well, they're all important, but you can't
HAVE them all at good high numbers.
Fourth warrior: started 14 13 15 5 3 17 3 ended 14 13 15 11 9 17 5
Again, the low will is going to make trouble for this one in the long run. He
isn't very bright, or very accurate, either, though he's strong... It may be type-
casting, but I would make this one a basher. You know, big, dumb barbarian..?
Fifth warrior: started 11 10 7 12 9 8 13 ended 11 10 7 17 15 9 15
The best of the lot (I wonder if anyone's done a survey to see how often the
fifth warrior on a team is the best?). The high wit and respectable will and deftness
make this a warrior to cherish, although he isn't GREAT. Well, I could count on the
fingers of one hand the number of great warriors that have come my way, and most of
them are dead. With a constitution of ten, he isn't going to be killed with one blow
(unless he draws a 21-strength monster for his first opponent), but I'll still give
him ring mail and a helm, just in case. This warrior would be good for most any
style.
You will have noticed that I haven't suggested wall of steel or aimed blow for
any of these warriors. These two styles, for me, are hard to run successfully, so
naturally I can't advise about them. I'm still studying this pair, but I can tell you
that aimed blows require both intelligence and accuracy (and they die a lot), and
walls of steel need endurance (will and constitution) (and they die a lot, at least
for me).
