WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
The Quest for the Key, Part 6
Vengeance and Teetotaler were exhausted. Their quest had brought them halfway
across the lands of the Chaos Spawn and they were no further along than they had been
when they started. It was clear that the children of the Gate had some purpose for
the key other than merely depriving its use from their enemies. Likewise, it was
clear that they knew the Protectors from Alastari were avidly seeking their lifeline
to their homeland and were cunningly seeking to befuddle all pursuit.
But knowing that meant nothing. The question was still: Where was the key and
why did they steal it?
"Let's go," Tee said, rising from the tall grass. "We received a report of
activity from the swamps south of the Chaos Temple. It seems a column of powerful
Spawn is moving eastward towards the standing stones and sacrificial altars. That
might be a lead."
Vengeance sighed. "Who reported it?"
"Donny and that group he's gathered. He usually has good information."
"We've been all over that area. I heard that Psycho Scientist, with a spell he
got from his master, teleported into the Temple and searched the treasuries before he
got beat up pretty good. The Temple is too obvious. This column is likely another
diversion, similar to the party we followed to that lost temple in the jungle.
They're leading us around like trained apes."
Tee groaned. "So what else do we do? Stop trying to analyze everything. I
don't think the bastards are that smart."
Vengeance scowled and began drawing a map in the mud. "Here's the Temple.
Here's our Keep. Here're the Elemental Pits. Here's the Great Swamp. Where have
there been engagements between our forces and theirs?"
Teetotaler began putting little sticks in the mud at the sites where Lord
Protectors did battle with the Chaos Spawn since the loss of the key. As he did so,
Vengeance began circling the crude map, picturing the terrain of the region. When Tee
put in his last stick, which represented the attack led just that morning by the
legendary Goldilocks, Vengeance suddenly plunged his longsword into the black earth.
"There," was all he said.
Tee looked at the spot doubtfully. "But there's nothing out there. I see why
you might think that, because of the lack of activity, but it's the middle of nowhere.
Our flybys have spotted nothing but swamp and quicksand. You remember, we were out
that way the mission before we found the Roc egg. We never even saw a patrol."
"I'd agree except for two things. First, notice the line of engagements within
the Great Swamp which sweep east to west. Almost as if they drew a line on a map and
stationed forces there to stop anyone moving along the path towards this dead area.
Second, and more importantly, if you recall, that's near to the area we recovered that
evil artifact we found which we gave to Skek, right after we got here. He told us
that the artifact was obviously a religious icon of some sort. At the time, we
thought they were bearing the artifact from another outpost of evil, but what if they
were coming from a secret fortress within this swamp?" Vengeance paced back and
forth, his eyes gleaming with the possibility of finally achieving their goal.
Teetotaler shrugged. "It won't hurt to look."

Executioner drew his sword from the heart of the demon he had trailed for miles
through the swamp. They had come all the way from the bluff overlooking the Keep, the
beast thinking that its natural camouflage protected it from hostile eyes, all the
while not noticing the huge, misshapen footprints it left behind in the mud. Curious,
Executioner had followed the creature for the better part of a week, wondering what
brought it out here into the middle of nowhere. He knew he could be off killing a
dozen of its kindred, but for some reason he had a feeling that this one was
important.
It was this same feeling that allowed him victory over the Shadowed Being in the
last great tournament which led to his being declared champion.
As he pondered the source of this perception, a loud cry from overhead stirred
him from his musings.
* * * * * *
Teetotaler wheeled the Roc and landed in a clearing. From above, this was the
only spot for miles that offered a fair landing area. Moreover, it was close to a
small region of blackened foliage which stood out after close scrutiny. He leaped
from the beast's back, signaling it to circle the area until called while Vengeance
unpacked the gear.
Several hours later, they took up position just south of what appeared to be a
small stone shrine. It appeared to be deserted, but it was situated at the center of
the scorched area. Furthermore, it exuded an aura of death and foreboding even more
powerful than the Chaos Temple itself. This, Vengeance had noted, was either a
promising sign or a very bad omen.
Tee motioned for Vengeance to cover him, then slid on his belly though the mud
and leaves until he had reached the mouth of the black, stone building. He rose
cautiously and slipped inside. A moment later, he reappeared and motioned for
Vengeance to join him.
"It's empty, except for a very weird statue," he called when the Captain of the
Companions reached him.
Against the back wall of the shrine stood a huge statue of a powerful demon.
Vengeance crunched though the chamber, which was heaped with bones of past sacrifices,
to examine the statue. It was a very impressive rendering. As he examined it, Tee
searched carefully for secret passages or tunnels.
Just as Vengeance was about to say that they were obviously in the wrong place,
the statue shuddered and slid to one side. From the narrow opening beneath it, the
midnight black form of a Shadowed Being leaped into the room, attacking with ferocity.
"You shall never enter the Chamber of Worlds!" it hissed, its words barely
recognizable.
Vengeance dove out of the shrine, barely escaping the menacing talons of the
beast. He shouted for Teetotaler to get it out into the open where they could both
work to defeat it, but he heard the clash of talon on blade from within, and knew that
the Spawn had trapped the valiant warrior. Before he could rush to his friend's aid,
the mangled body of the Champion of the Gate was thrown from the shrine to crash
limply to the sodden earth. The demon followed, its laugh a hideous chitter.
Vengeance shuddered. If they died here, there would be no one to find them. And
he had never defeated a Shadowed Being. And even though the creature was weaker in
daylight than it was in the pitch blackness, it seemed unlikely that would be enough
to turn the tide of this battle.
Then, miraculously, Vengeance watched as a mailed form leaped into the fray,
attacking relentlessly, and, amazingly, scoring blows upon the body of the beast.
Though startled, Vengeance moved as quickly as thought and together he and Executioner
finished off the astonished Child of Night.
"I don't know where you came from, but thanks for the help," Vengeance said
sincerely. He and Executioner had never really gotten along, but as two of the top
warriors of their style, they had always had a mutual respect for each other.
Then Vengeance's eyes fell upon Tee and he shook his head. Without his partner,
the descent into the passage under the shrine was unwise. Eyebrow raised, he glanced
toward Executioner.
The sturdy warrior gazed back, then nodded. "I'll go with you. Why not?"
An hour later they had descended what felt like a mile into the earth, following
the twisting, dank, stone-clad tunnel. It was pitch black, except for the dim flow
from the lightstone Vengeance always kept with him, which barely allowed them to see
where they were headed. The ominous scuffling of their footfalls thundered in their
ears, shattering the grave-like silence of the subterranean tomb. Once, early on,
Vengeance tried to speak, but the booming echoes proved to him the wisdom of keeping
quiet. Now, they moved as quietly as possible, eyes straining to see any sign of
light below them.
At last, the passage abruptly spilled out onto a stone balcony which overlooked a
scene of wonder and terror.
A vast chamber lay before them, filled with perhaps a thousand of the most
powerful Chaos Spawn. All were turned towards the far wall of the cavern, where three
glowing portals yawned open. They were clearly Gates, such as the one though which
the Defenders had come to this place called Kaikwok. At the mouth of each Gate stood
a monstrous creature which was shouting in an alien tongue to the massed Spawn.
Obviously what the creatures said pleased their audiences, for every so often, a
roar would rise from the assembly and there would be much chest thumping and shouting.
Executioner whispered into Vengeance's ear. "Just what we need, more beasts to
fight. But why aren't they coming through?"
It was a good question, but Vengeance remembered when they first came through the
Gate, Sheila Greywand has spoken of the Gates needing to stabilize before they could
be traversed. Time for the pathways to become complete. Clearly the Chaos Spawn were
awaiting this process to conclude before new, powerful allies could be brought into
this world.
Then, at the same instant, the both saw it. The key! It was atop a golden
pedestal and faint rays of light reached from it to each of the three portals. The
enemy was using their own key to turn the tide of the battle against them!
"How do we get it?" Vengeance asked himself. The massed horde was intent upon
the Gates, but the pedestal was surrounded by three Jaguar Priests of the highest
rank.
The idea came to him at once. He pulled off his tunic, revealing the encircling
mesh of blue scales which had been spreading over him for the past year. It was a
reaction of normal, human flesh to the twisting forces of this gated world. Skek,
who, before now, was the only one other than Teetotaler who knew of the mutation, had
said that with continued exposure, the scales would spread until they covered his
entire body. Only the routine visits to Alastari for the tournaments tended to retard
the spread.
"Give me your full helm,' Vengeance said to the amazed Executioner.
Placing the fearsome steel helmet upon his head, and with his shimmering, scaly
torso revealed, he fit in quite well into the menagerie of horrors below.
Before he descended into the chamber, he whispered to Executioner, "I'll be
moving at full speed if I get it. Be ready to stop the fastest of them, then follow
me up. Take my stone. I'll grab a torch as I run by. I'll get the Roc ready to go,
so get topside as soon as you can. This lot will not be well pleased."
Executioner nodded. The plan was rash, but it might work, and he liked fighting
better than running any day.
He watched as Vengeance moved stealthily though the cavern, half of his mind
wondering where the scales which covered his companion came from and the other half
praying that the Chaos creatures remained interested in the opening Gates. Then,
amazingly, Vengeance was moving through the Jaguar Priest to the pedestal. One of
them grunted as Vengeance brushed past him, but paid him no mind.
When Vengeance reached the pedestal, he paused for a moment, examining the key,
then grabbed it and ran in one motion. The three yawning Gates winked out and a cry
of dismay rose from the audience. Then a wail of disappointment.
Then a roar of anger.
As one, the entire assembly turned and shrieked in hatred at the tiny figure
fleeing up the stairs to the balcony. As one, they set forth in pursuit.
Vengeance passed Executioner at full sprint, running as he never had before. The
shivering sensation at the back of his neck abated as the anticipation of a groping
arm grasping him from behind faded, and he bolted up the stairs. Behind him, he heard
the clash of weapons and a cry of pain. Executioner had claimed one of the pursuers.
If only he could hold them for a few moments, then escape, they would actually achieve
this amazing rescue. Vengeance resolved as he ran that if they all survived, he'd get
to know the grim faced fighter better.
Another death-shriek echoed up from below.
And another.
Running was part of the standard exercise regimen all gladiators took part in,
but Vengeance wagered to himself that none had ever run as hard as he did at that
moment. He felt as if he carried the weight of Alastari on his shoulders as he
labored up the steep steps, gasping for air, muscles burning, cheered on by the chorus
of cries of rage and agony which echoed about him.
Then, amazingly, he shot out into the shrine and out into the swamp.
Fortunately, the clearing was not far. A handful of minutes of all-out sprinting
covered the same ground as an hour of creeping through the brush.
Before they descended, they had returned Tee's body to the Roc, and instructed
the beast to be ready for a swift departure. To Vengeance's relief, a swift blast on
the Roc's whistle brought the bird at once, and he leaped into the saddle. He
maneuvered the Roc closer to the shrine, ready to flee as soon as Executioner emerged.
Ten minutes passed.
Vengeance pictured the mail-clad warrior overrun and a horde of screaming death
erupting from the swamp to reclaim the key. He was never one for waiting. The key
was glory and hope for the small force from Alastari, but he was not one to let a
companion die unavenged. Steeling his will, Vengeance prepared to leap down and send
the Roc back to the Keep alone, when Executioner, bloody and teeth clenched, burst
into the clearing and leaped in one bound onto the Roc's back.
"Fly" he cried. "Fly if you would live!"
But Vengeance had already given the command and the huge bird took to the air,
rising swiftly upwards as the cries of a sea of Chaos rose up from below.
* * * * * *
Sheila Greywand stood over the just resurrected body of Teetotaler, a rare smile
upon her beautiful face. "Well, it took you long enough. And don't let it happen
again."
Executioner and Vengeance shared a look, then bowed, while Tee looked up
quizzically. "Took us long enough for what? And, by the way, what day is it?"
The key restored, the first step taken by the Lady of the Wand had been to
enspell the artifact so subtly and powerfully that it would never be taken again. She
then sought out the heroes of the day to present them with the rewards they had gained
for their recent tournament victories. She also bestowed golden medallions upon
Executioner, Teetotaler and Vengeance for their valiant conduct and service to
Alastari.
A great feast was held in the Keep, during which the tale of deeds was told and
contests of strength and prowess were held. All but Skek partook in the festivities.
He stood apart, brooding.
Near the end of the evening, Sheila approached the wizard and asked him what was
keeping him from enjoying the feast.
"My Lady, the battle is won, but the war is far from over. The enemy will not
stop now until we are wiped from the face of this world. United in their hatred, they
will be coming."
Sheila frowned. "Perhaps. But that is another day."
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Gypsy Moth came, and Gypsy Moth fell. To whom? Donny!
Yes, Donatello is back as Captain of the Gate. All hail the mighty Donatello!
Vengeance and Teetotaler both ventured into the wilds and slew chaos monsters--
Vengeance decimating the Spirit of the Jaguar, and Teetotaler slaying another Air
Dragon. Thank you two for helping keep Alastari safe!
Amazingly enough, Roman Heroes was the most avoided team here. I wonder why that
is. Maybe it's because you challenge warriors like Juanita with Trebonius (a 15-point
downchallenge). Seems that Briteron By wants to fight Roman Heroes the least.
Ah, well. As I suspected, I'm in trouble with Sheila. Turns out that she did
hear what I said about her. The first thing She asked me was what the first letter of
that word was. Uh, I can't remember? I don't think she's pleased.
But it's good to be back in touch with Alastari.
I'd like to welcome the nineteen new warriors that She sent through the Gate:

Well, gotta go.
Until next week, I remain,

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Oscar -- I'm pleased that we received the tournament. I also liked the five-fight
rule. I didn't expect Docile Mistress to see round six for at least two years of
constant play.
However, there did seem to be some garbling of reports sent through the Gate;
Docile Mistress isn't a Slasher, and never uses the Battle Axe. Docile Mistress beat
Samona, and lost to Stormbringer, Opus, Priestess Python, Jesse Jackson, and Rage,
learning a skill in every fight. Only 16 left! -- JT
I see. It looks like the fight reports were garbled going through the gate.
Now, thanks to Vengeance, Executioner and Teetotaler, the flow of information
shouldn't be impeded. I'm sending the fights out again, so you all can have
clear copies of them. Sorry about that.
I'm glad you liked the five fights. -- Oscar
